(23-24九年级上·江苏扬州·期末)Scrooge was trying very hard not to be scared. The Ghost’s voice scared him and its cold eyes frightened him. Then the Ghost took off the bandage from its head. And its lower jaws dropped down onto its chest! Scrooge was horrified.
Scrooge fell to his knees. “Mercy!” he said. “Why have you come?” “Do you believe in me or not?” asked the Ghost. “I do,” said Scrooge. “I must.” The Ghost cried out. It shook its chain.
“Why are you carrying that chain?” asked Scrooge, shaking. “I wear the chain that I made in life,” replied the Ghost. “I made it link by link, and metre by metre. I wound (缠绕) it around myself. Does it look strange to you?” Scrooge trembled more and more.
“Would you like to feel the weight of the chain you are carrying?” continued the Ghost. “It was as heavy and as long as this seven Christmas Eves ago. You have worked very hard on it, since. It is a huge chain now!”
Scrooge looked at the floor around him. But there was no chain. “Jacob,” he cried. “Old Jacob Marley, explain everything to me!” “I can’t,” the Ghost replied. “I can’t stay long. I have to travel all the time! I can’t rest. I can’t stay anywhere.”
“You have been dead for seven years,” said Scrooge, “Have you been travelling the whole time?” “Yes, the whole time,” said the Ghost. “No rest, no peace!” The Ghost of Marley cried again. And it clanked its chain. “I had the opportunity to be kind and do good in life. But I did nothing. And now I’m dead, I regret that,” cried the Ghost.
“But you were always a good businessman, Jacob,” said Scrooge. “Business!” cried the Ghost, wringing its hands again. “The welfare of mankind was my business. Charity, kindness, and generosity were all my business. My job was only a drop of water in the huge ocean of my business!”

The two smaller Cratchits, a boy and a girl, came running in. “We smelt our goose at the baker’s,” they shouted and they danced around the table.
“Where’s your father?” said Mrs Cratchit. “And your brother, Tiny Tim! And Martha wasn’t as late as this last Christmas Day!”
“Here I am, mother!” said a girl in the doorway. “You are very late,” said Mrs Cratchit, kissing her a couple of times.
“We had a lot of work to finish last night,” replied the girl, “and I had to clear up this morning, Mother!”
“Well, never mind! You are here now,” said Mrs Cratchit.
“Father’s coming,” cried the two young Cratchits.
In came Bob Cratchit in his threadbare clothes which he had worn for many years. Tiny Tim sat on his shoulder. Poor Tiny Tim! He couldn’t walk normally (正常地) without a walking stick.

(23-24九年级上·江苏泰州·期末)Time to let go!
When I asked my mum and dad if I could go to Kavos with some of my friends for a week, the last thing I thought they would say was “yes”. “There is nothing to discuss,” my dad barked, “Of course you can’t. My girl, you are too young to travel without the presence (在场) of an adult. It’s completely out of question.” My mum just went on and on about all of the possible dangers. So I tried to change their minds. I told them,“If you were worried about the possibility of me falling off a wall and dying in Kavos, then why weren’t you also worried about the possibility of the same thing happening to me here in London?”.
Finally, they agreed—unwillingly. My mum took me to the airport. I had to fly because my friends had flown out the day before. I arrived at the hotel and met my friends at 6 a. m., after a long night of flying.
After having left my luggage in my room, I explored the attractions with my friends. Everyone spoke English and everywhere looked like a cheap American film set. It was just what we all needed after a long year of busy study.
I promised my parents I wouldn’t go out every night. But once you’re there, it just can’t be helped. Every one of us wanted to make the most of our week of freedom. To be honest, I think we did get a bit too crazy.
I still wonder if my parents were happy with their decision. But I did have a wonderful holiday. I think the experience should make my parents realize that it is time for them to let go. I got home safely at last. So did my friends. Now I’m talking with my mum about a similar journey next year. She is speechless for a moment, then she cries, “My alarm bells (警钟) have already started ringing.”

(23-24九年级上·江苏连云港·期末)As soon as I could walk, I climbed up a hill that was nearby to see where I was. Was I on a continent or an island? Were there people? Were there wild animals? From the top of the hill, I could see that I was on an island. The sea was all around me, and I could see no other land. I saw no sign of people on the island, nor any wild animals. There were a lot of birds, but I did not know what type of birds they were. I shot a large bird, but its meat was terrible. I could not eat it.
I returned to the raft (木筏) and made a small hut with the wood I got from the ship. It was not very strong, but I was afraid of wild animals attacking me during the night. It was almost low tide again, so I swam back to the ship and brought back another raft of valuable things. I got some nails and axes and a grindstone to keep the axes sharp. I also got some iron bars, a lot of clothes, and some more guns. I found a sail and a hammock. I made a new raft and brought everything to shore. When I returned, I saw an animal like a cat sitting on one of the boxes. It was not afraid of me. I gave it some food. It ate the food and walked into the forest. I made a tent with the sail and brought everything valuable into it. Then, I made a circle around it with boxes and pieces of wood to stop animals or people from attacking me during the night.
Every day, at low tide, I went back to the ship and got more things. I had a lot of rope, and I took all the sails. I was surprised to find more food and gladly brought that back to shore as well. Once, the raft tipped (倾斜) near the shore, and everything fell into the water. However, the water was not deep there, and I managed to save most of my things. It was very hard work. On the twelfth day, I found some scissors and knives as well as some money. While I was on the ship, the wind began to blow, and I was afraid that I would not be able to get back to the shore. I did not make a raft that day but swam back with the scissors, knives, and money. I knew the money was useless, but I took it anyway.
That night, there was a storm, and when I woke in the morning the ship was gone. The storm had broken it up. I was very pleased that I had worked so hard to get what I could from it.

(23-24九年级上·江苏南京·期末)I was nine when my parents wanted to move from a normal-sized flat in the city to a small place in the countryside, and I was eleven by the time we did it. And when I say “small”, I mean really, really small. Our new home was about the size of a garage (车库). Compared (比较) to the flat where we used to live, it was tiny.
We built our tiny house ourselves on a piece of land about two hours’ drive from the city. We used to go there every weekend and during holidays to work on it, but, even so, it took nearly two years to finish. My mum designed the house to include all the basic things. My “bedroom” was built in a space under the roof that I could reach by ladder.
They enjoyed growing our own fruit and vegetables and keeping chickens. They were very pleased about not having to pay for power because we could produce our own electricity from the sun. We also collected wood around us to burn for heat.
I remember that it took me a few months to get used to living in such a small space. Before we moved from the city, we had to give away most of our things because there wasn’t enough room for them anymore, but now I don’t mind having fewer things. And one thing I love about our tiny home is being able to spend so much more time outside—something I didn’t do in the city very often. And I do a lot more things with my parents, which is great.
I don't think I’ll choose “tiny living” for myself in the future, but I’m glad that I’ve had the experience of it.

(23-24九年级上·江苏徐州·期末)Going to Mount Huangshan reminds me of the popular song The Long and Winding Road. What is so breathtaking about the experience is the out-of-this-world scenes. The rolling sea of clouds at the top of the mountain will remind you how tiny we humans are.
The hot spring (温泉) at the foot of the mountain is something you must try after the climb. It will surely help you get refreshed! The amazing thing about the spring is that the colder the temperature gets, the hotter the spring is! Strange, isn’t it? But that’s how nature is —always leaving us amazed.
What comes next is the endless series of steps. You can’t help wondering how hard it was for the people then to put all those rocks into place. Though it is the only unnatural thing on your way up the mountain, still it offers a place where you can sit down to rest your aching legs.
As the song goes, this long and winding road “will never disappear”. It will always stick in the visitor’s memory. It sure does in mine. While you are in China, Mount Huangshan is a must to visit!
1.What is the passage mainly about?
A.A weather record. B.A hot spring bath. C.A composer story. D.A travel experience.

Heidi carefully looking at the goats (山羊) with her hands behind her back. “Peter,” she said to the boy lying on the ground, “the prettiest goats of all are Little Swan and Little Bear.”
“Yes.” Peter replied, “Alm Uncle washes them and gives them salt. He has the nicest shed (棚) for them.”

Peter rushed through the middle of the flock (羊群) towards the mountain where any careless goat, if it went too near, might fall off. (23-24九年级上·江苏南通·期末)I looked down at my shoes as people filled the train, and then I saw her. She looked a little tired and pale. As I watched the woman, I thought about the letters my mother wrote and how she must have known an ordinary piece of paper turns into a love letter when a person puts herself into it. Then I remembered the notebook in my bag. I would write the woman a note and give it to her as I exited the train, I decided. I pulled the notebook out of my bag and began writing a letter.
When I looked up, the woman was gone. I left the letter in my notebook, unsure of what to do with it now that she would never know that it was meant for her.
After I wrote that letter, more letters to other people I observed came marching out of me, one by one, until soon I had filled up the notebook.
Back on the train, just a few days later, the plan became clear. I was going to leave the letter I wrote to the woman on the subway for someone else to find. Then I would spread other love letters all over New York City. And once I had set each one in its place, I would write even more.
I tried to form a picture in my mind of what would make me pick up a letter if I found it on a random (任意的) subway train or in a coffee shop thinking it might have been for me all along. I settled on something simple: If you find this letter then it’s for you. I wrote those words on my first letter. I folded the letter and placed it behind me. When I got to my stop, I planned to let the letter slip down onto the seat as I walked away.
At Grand Cantral Terminal, I waited for the subway doors to open and then stood up as quickly as possible. Rushing through the doors, I kept running faster and faster once my feet hit the platform. I was more nervous when I got farther away from the train, disappearing into the city.
During the fall of 2010, I kept leaving letters. In the months that followed, I started my own site, MoreLoveLetters.com, about my project, inspiring others to write and leave letters in their own communities. Now the website connects strangers in need of love letters and those who want to write them.
About a year later, a woman wrote to me about her friend Briana, a single mother struggling to pay the rent. I typed out Briana’s story and published it on the website. A week later, I walked away from the post office with a lot of mail and a big idea about human beings: mainly that if you give them something to do, a task, they will show up. At the end of that month, I mailed letters off to Briana.
Then, I got a thank-you e-mail from Briana’s friend. “They show you’re not alone and that you’re not struggling for nothing,” she wrote.
About all stories, I will always go back to Matt’s from Ohio. He e-mailed me about two years ago. Matt told me he was getting older. His family and he were disconnected. He didn’t have many friends. He was starting to believe he’d leave nothing behind and he’d be forgotten.
The message was sent with no return address. There was no way to write back to him, but I hope he reads these words:

(23-24九年级上·江苏扬州·期末)Everybody has their own comfort food. I have a long list, and Apple Fritter (油炸馅饼) is at the top. Nothing can deal with my stress quite like a fresh Apple Fritter.

Looking at the cashier, I said, “Could you check your inventory to see if maybe there’s one you missed? ”
She did, and there was none to be found.
What in the world am I going to do without an Apple Fritter? Especially at a time when I can have one behind the back of my wife.

(23-24九年级上·江苏泰州·期末)My mom’s life was a busy one. Raising four kids on her own was a full time job in itself, but she also worked outside. Surprisingly, she always seemed to find a little bit of extra time for us.
She would take us over to my aunt’s when she worked as a waitress. We would have to hurry, so my mom would be on time for work. I thought she would hurry off as soon as we arrived at the front gate, but that didn’t happen. Instead, we would sit on the porch (门廊), my mom in her waitress uniform, and talk about what happened that day.
“I learned how to write my name!” Larry, my younger brother, would shout.
My mom would get paper and a pencil out of her purse and hand it to my brother. “Show me how you do it,” she’d ask.
“Do you have enough time to hear what I did today?” I’d ask her.
Mom would smile at me, “I’m never too busy for something important like that!”
She gave us the gift of time throughout the years. After her retirement (退休), my mom gave the gift of time to my children too. They would ask their grandma if she would play with them, or read them a story. By then my mom had health problems, but she would always nod. Those moments were a wonderful gift that my children still talk about and treasure.
In the last few years of her life, I would sit with my mom on the porch. She would listen as I shared all of my hopes, my fears, and my dreams. I asked her if she minded me taking up so much of her free time.
“Nonsense,” she’d tell me. “I’m never too busy to spend time with you. It’s one of the greatest joys of my life.”

(23-24九年级上·江苏扬州·期末)Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Crachit, Tiny Tim—everyone knows these names. The same goes for the phrase “Bah! Humbug!” Probably one of the most beloved Christmas stories in history, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has it all: heroes, villains, ghosts, time travel, long-lost love, and a happy ending.
The story centers on Scrooge, a rich businessman. Scrooge used to be a cold, greedy, mean, old man! The cold within him froze his old face. It made his eyes red and his thin lips blue. And it spoke out in his unkind voice. His money was his life. He hated Christmas and expressed his dislike with “Bah, humbug”.
One Christmas Eve, Scrooge is led through different stages of his life by three ghosts. The Ghost of Christmas Past takes him back to his childhood and youth. As a young man, he loses Belle’s love to his greed. The Ghost of Christmas Present takes him to see how others are celebrating Christmas this year. Everyone is happy, even poor people. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come never speaks and silently takes Scrooge on a tour of the misery that will fall on him and Tiny Tim. Scrooge sees that he is dead, but nobody cares. He is so scared.
After their visits, Scrooge is changed into a kinder, gentler man. He spreads Christmas cheer to one and all. He never sees the Ghosts again. And people always say, “Mr. Scrooge knows how to celebrate Christmas, better than any other man on Earth.”
Scrooge has the power to change the future with his present actions, and Dickens tries to send the message to the reader: if Scrooge can change, then so can anyone.

In the late 1960s, when Li Zhenxia was 5, she liked oil-paper umbrellas and dreamed of buying a beautiful, red oil-paper umbrella in a store next to her grandmother’s house. It was too expensive for her family to afford one at the time.
When she was 10, she saw a young bridegroom (新郎) pass by her house on his way to pick up his bride. He and his friends were carrying six red oil-paper umbrellas, and the image touched her heart.
When she was in high school, her physics teacher would arrive with an oil-paper umbrella every time it rained. She and the teacher became good friends.
In 1996, Li’s dream of oil-paper umbrellas came true when she started learning how to make them by herself. Two years later, she produced her first one. Of course, it was red.
Today, Li is a boss and has her own stores. She enjoys talking to her customers and passing on her skills to her students.

Production involves over a hundred individual steps, from cutting the bamboo and threading (穿线) the pieces together, to pasting the paper shade, drying it in the sun and brushing it with oil. The whole process takes between 15 days and several months, depending on the umbrella’s design, and all the work is done by hand.

People never stop looking for an explanation on what they lose and gain in life. In 1977, Bridge to Terabithia (《仙境之桥》) was published, offering a new answer.
Like other boys in his class, Jesse Aarons’ dream is to become the fastest runner in fifth grade. He has been practicing all summer. But on the first day of school, a girl crosses over to the boys’ side of the playground and outruns everyone. That’s not a very good beginning for a friendship, but Jesse and Leslie Burke soon become best friends. With endless imagination and optimism, Leslie brings happiness to Jesse, who has been lonely and blue.
Together, they create Terabithia, a magical kingdom in the woods where they act as king and queen. Unfortunately, a terrible thing happens one morning. Jesse hurts his heart. However, this tragedy (悲剧) makes him understand the courage Leslie has given him.
Having had an unhappy childhood herself, Katherine Paterson, this book’s author, would usually give her characters a lonely life. Then she would give them rising hope and happiness. But in order to create “ups and downs” and show her own ideas, the US author would take away what those characters had gained, and end the book with a deep theme.

A.The basic things of the house. B.The reasons for building a house.
C.The difficulties of building a house. D.The building and design of the house.

A.My parents were very happy with our new life.
B.My parents got used to living in the tiny home.
C.My parents got on well with our new neighbours.
D.My parents were busy with farm work every day.
4.How does the writer feel about living in a tiny home in the end?

Suddenly, Peter jumped up and ran after the goats hurriedly. Heidi followed him as fast as she could. Peter rushed through the middle of the flock (羊群) towards the mountain where any careless goat, if it went too near, might fall off. He saw the curious Greenfinch walking in that direction, and he was only just in time, for she had already jumped to the edge of an abyss (深渊的边缘). Peter threw himself down and caught one of her hind legs. Greenfinch began shouting angrily. She was angry at being held so fast and being stopped from continuing her journey. Greenfinch tried so hard to jump forward that Peter shouted to Heidi to come and help him.
Heidi had already run up and she saw the danger both Peter and the animal were in. She quickly collected some sweet-smelling leaves, held them under Greenfinch’s nose, and said, “Come, come, Greenfinch. You mustn’t be naughty (淘气的)! Look, you may fall down and that will give you terrible pain!”
Greenfinch turned quickly and began eating the leaves. At the same time, Peter quickly stood up and took hold of Greenfinch by the band (带子) round her neck. Heidi also took hold of the band on the other side. Together they led Greenfinch back to the flock. Peter had his goat in safety. He lifted his stick in order to give her a good beating as punishment. Greenfinch saw what was coming and moved back in fear. But Heidi cried out, “No, no, Peter, you must not hit her. Look! How scared she is!”
“She deserves it,” shouted Peter, and again lifted his stick, Then Heidi stood in front of him and cried angrily, “It will hurt her. Let her alone!”

Matt, I want you to know: You were wrong to think you’d be forgotten. And I was wrong to think people couldn’t walk into our lives and change our histories immediately. Because you did that for me.

In 1803 he moved to the United States, and found the animals in his new home were among the most beautiful in the world. He particularly enjoyed watching the birds.
John spent much of his early adulthood trying and failing at many businesses in the United States. Instead of taking care of business, John was usually off exploring in the wilderness.
At first, John spent his time hunting for food and sport, but he became more interested in the birds he found. He began studying them, trying to learn the differences between the types and noticing their behaviors. He often sketched (素描) and painted the birds he was watching.
He was so sad that he couldn’t earn enough money to support his family, so he spent time improving his painting skills and began to sell his pictures. He discovered that he could earn some money doing something he really enjoyed.
John wanted to have his collection of bird paintings published. He found no one in America who was willing to publish his works, so in 1826, John headed for London, England. He and his paintings were well-received because it helped people in London see what wildlife faraway America looked like.

“The oil-paper umbrella is like my lover; it has been with me my whole life and always makes me feel better,” the 58-year-old said.
Li’s store in Datong ancient town in Chishui City, Guizhou Province—a town where there is a lot of rain—welcomes many visitors who buy her umbrellas to model in photos, decorate their homes or add to collections, and sometimes even to use for catwalks at shows and performances.
Now Li has two more stores, one in Danzhai in Guizhou and another in Sichuan Province. Of her three children, only her eldest son, who is 36, helps with the business, running the store in Danzhai. Her daughter is married in Beijing, while her youngest son is a Grade-3 high school student. Li hopes he will learn art and help her make umbrellas in the future.

He put my saddle and bridle on and rode up to the front door of the house. Squire Gordon was standing there.
“John,” he said, “Mrs. Gordon is very ill. Ride to the doctor’s and give him this note.”
“Now, Beauty, do your best.” said John. I went as fast as possible. When we arrived at Dr. White’s house, John told him, “Mrs. Gordon is very ill. Squire Gordon thinks she is going to die. Please go to her immediately.” “Yes, but my son has my horse,” said the doctor, “Can I have yours?” he asked.
The doctor was heavier than John, and not such a good rider. But I did my very best and went as fast as possible. When we got to Berwick Park, Squire Gordon was at the door. The doctor went into the house with him, and Joe led me to the stable. I was glad to be home. My legs were shaking, and I was very wet. Joe was young and he forgot to put a warm blanket on me. Then he gave me cold water to drink. Soon all my body began to shake, and I felt very cold. A long time later, John came back. He covered me with two or three warm blankets, and ran to the house for some hot water. He gave me some warm food, and then I thought I went to sleep.
Over and over again, John said to himself, “Stupid boy! Stupid boy!”

Paterson is good at showing characters’ feelings. Readers can feel the sadness when characters lose something beautiful. Paterson writes novels for teenagers, so their language is not hard for Chinese students. Why not try to read the book?
