He’d been conducting his own science experiments with keen interest for about three years by that point, mixing up whatever he could get his hands on at home and waiting eagerly to see the results. Last October, the 3M company and Discovery Education selected Heman, a rising 10th-grader, as the winner of its Young Scientist Challenge. His prize: $25,000. His accomplishment: inventing a soap that could one day treat and even prevent multiple forms of skin cancer. Born in Addis Ababa before moving to the U. S., Heman recalls that some of his earliest memories were of seeing laborers working in the burning sun, usually with no protection for their skin. It didn’t take too long for him to start thinking about how he might help. A few years ago, he read about imiquimod, a drug that is approved to fight one form of skin cancer. Typically, imiquimod is prescribed as a front-line drug, but Heman wondered if it could be made available more easily to people in the earliest stages of the disease. A bar of soap, he thought, might be just the delivery system for such a lifesaving drug, not just because it was simple, but because it would be a lot more affordable. There was a long way to go between inspiration and application, however. Carrying out his idea was more complicated than simply mixing the drug into an ordinary bar of soap, since any healing power the imiquimod might possess would just be washed down the drain. The answer was to combine the soap with a lipid-based (脂质基) nanoparticle (纳米颗粒) that would stay on the skin when the soap was washed away. Heman remains humble about what he’s accomplished. “Anybody could do what I did,” he says. “I just came up with an idea and worked towards it.” 4. What can we infer about Heman’s personality as a young boy according to paragraph 1? A. Ambitious and tolerant. B. Curious and passionate. C. Hardworking and athletic. D. Generous and determined. 5. What inspired Heman to invent the new type of soap? A. His desire to help those in need. B. His passion for science research. C. His dream of winning the prize. D. His pursuit of public recognition. 6. Why does Heman consider soap the best option for delivering the drug? A. It contains imiquimod. B. It provides shelter from sun exposure. C. It reduces side effects. D. It is inexpensive and accessible. 7. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about? A. The application of Heman’s soap in daily life B. The development of soap-making technology. C. Difficulty and resolution in delivering imiquimod. D. Process and requirements of using the special soap. B 5. A 6. D 7. 根据第一段“He’d been conducting his own science experiments with keen interest for about three years by that point, mixing up whatever he could get his hands on at home and waiting eagerly to see the results.(到那时,他已经怀着浓厚的兴趣进行了大约三年的科学实验,把他在家里能弄到的东西混在一起,热切地等待着看到结果)”可知,赫曼作为一个小男孩好奇,并且充满热情。 根据第三段“Born in Addis Ababa before moving to the U. S., Heman recalls that some of his earliest memories were of seeing laborers working in the burning sun, usually with no protection for their skin.(赫曼在搬到美国之前出生在亚的斯亚贝巴,他回忆说,他最早的记忆是看到工人在烈日下工作,通常没有保护他们的皮肤)”以及第四段“It didn’t take too long for him to start thinking about how he might help.(没过多久,他就开始考虑自己能帮上什么忙)”可知,想帮助那些需要帮助的人激发了赫曼发明这种新型肥皂。故选A。 根据倒数第三段“A bar of soap, he thought, might be just the delivery system for such a lifesaving drug, not just because it was simple, but because it would be a lot more affordable.(他想,一块肥皂可能就是这种救命药物的输送系统,不仅因为它简单,而且因为它更便宜)”可知,赫曼认为肥皂是输送药物的最佳选择因为它既便宜又容易获得。 根据第五段“There was a long way to go between inspiration and application, however. Carrying out his idea was more complicated than simply mixing the drug into an ordinary bar of soap, since any healing power the imiquimod might possess would just be washed down the drain. The answer was to combine the soap with a lipid-based (脂质基) nanoparticle (纳米颗粒) that would stay on the skin when the soap was washed away.(然而,从灵感到应用还有很长的路要走。实现他的想法比简单地将药物混合到一块普通肥皂中要复杂得多,因为咪喹莫特可能具有的任何治疗能力都将被冲入下水道。答案是将肥皂与一种脂质纳米颗粒结合起来,当肥皂被洗掉时,纳米颗粒会留在皮肤上)”可知,第5段主要讲了传递咪喹莫特的困难及解决办法。故选C。 C Are you happy? What does occur to me is that there is more to life than simply the pursuit of happiness. Imagine that scientists have invented a machine that can be hooked (钩) up to your brain so that it can give you every pleasurable experience you could ever want. These scientists have designed it so that you can’t distinguish between those pleasurable feelings you have yourself and those that come from the machine, making you blessedly unaware you are actually floating in a tank, with electrodes (电极) in your brain. So, offered the chance to be hooked up to the machine for the rest of your life, would you choose the machine or real life? The vast majority of people would choose real life, despite some discomfort, sorrow, and upset. This thought-experiment aimed to show that there is something other than pure pleasure that gives our lives meaning. As humans, we need contrast in our emotions - the dark to make the light much brighter for us. Was Michelangelo happy when he was painting the Sistine Chapel? No one really knows, but he was probably quite frustrated and angry at times as well as bored, lonely and tired. He might have neck pain for most of it from looking up to paint for hours. But he didn’t do it to feel happy. It gave him a strong sense of purpose, meaning and accomplishment. Surely this is what is at the heart of what drives us. What’s also interesting is that it’s hard to say whether we really are happy or not. A psychiatry professor said that happiness is often experienced in retrospect — we look back on a time of our lives, an event or a moment and recall it with happiness. When we say we were happy in a relationship, for example, what we often mean is that recalling that relationship gives us happiness now. 8. What is the function of the machine mentioned in paragraph 2? A. Creating desired pleasure. B. Boosting your brain power. C. Detecting the surroundings. D. Helping you identify feelings. 9. Why does the author mention Michelangelo and his creation? A. To prove the impact of creativity. B. To recognize his contribution to art. C. To inspire other artists to work harder. D. To show the importance of emotional contrast. 10. What does the underlined word “retrospect” in paragraph 5 mean? A. A review. B. A procedure. C. A condition. D. A scene. 11. What does the author intend to convey in the passage? A. Life highlights hope. B. Life goes beyond happiness. C. Life calls for rapid action. D. Life reflects your thoughts. A 9. D 10. A 11. 根据第二段中“Imagine that scientists have invented a machine that can be hooked (钩) up to your brain so that it can give you every pleasurable experience you could ever want. These scientists have designed it so that you can’t distinguish between those pleasurable feelings you have yourself and those that come from the machine, making you blessedly unaware you are actually floating in a tank, with electrodes (电极) in your brain. (想象一下,科学家发明了一种机器,可以连接到你的大脑,这样它就可以给你任何你想要的愉快体验。这些科学家已经设计好了,这样你就无法区分你自己的愉悦感觉和那些来自机器的愉悦感觉,让你没有意识到你实际上是漂浮在一个装有电极的水箱里。)”可知,本段提到的机器的功能是创造想要的快乐。故选A项。 根据第三段“This thought-experiment aimed to show that there is something other than pure pleasure that gives our lives meaning. As humans, we need contrast in our emotions - the dark to make the light much brighter for us. (这个思想实验旨在表明,除了纯粹的快乐之外,还有其他东西赋予我们生活的意义。作为人类,我们需要情感上的对比——黑暗让光明对我们更亮。)”和第四段中“Was Michelangelo happy when he was painting the Sistine Chapel? No one really knows, but he was probably quite frustrated and angry at times as well as bored, lonely and tired. He might have neck pain for most of it from looking up to paint for hours. But he didn’t do it to feel happy. It gave him a strong sense of purpose, meaning and accomplishment. Surely this is what is at the heart of what drives us. 根据划线词句前文“A psychiatry professor said that happiness is often experienced in (一位精神病学教授说,幸福往往是在……中体验到的)”和后句“we look back on a time of our lives, an event or a moment and recall it with happiness (我们回顾生活中的一段时间、一件事或一个时刻,并带着幸福回忆起来。)” 故选A项。 根据第一段中“Are you happy? What does occur to me is that there is more to life than simply the pursuit of happiness. (你幸福吗?我真正想到的是,生活不仅仅是追求幸福。)”可知,作者想在文章中表达的是生活不仅仅是幸福。故选B项。 D The elephantnose fish wouldn’t get very far on eyesight alone in the dark rivers of western and central Africa. Instead, it relies on a sense called electrolocation: an organ on its tail produces a weak electric field that pulses outward from its body. Receptors (接受器) on its skin detect distortions (歪曲) to the field caused by objects or creatures nearby, creating a two-dimensional “electric image” of the object being detected. But how does the foot-long fish use that 2-D map to perceive a 3-D world? New findings published in Animal Behaviour suggest this creature does a little aquatic (水中的) dance, allowing it to perceive objects from slightly different angles that, when piled together, help distinguish 3-D objects. Sarah Skeels, a researcher at the University of Oxford, says the fish is known for making odd movements, such as turning around its trunk-like nose, which is full of electroreceptors, or shaking its electrically charged tail, when it encounters unfamiliar objects. Skeels suspected these motions might help the elephantnose perceive its surroundings. To test the idea, she presented the fish with a choice of two objects behind net-like doors — one object shaped like a sausage associated with a reward of tasty food, the other like a cube or sphere. After training, the fish quickly picked the door with the sausage shape almost 94 percent of the time. Then Skeels began to shrink the space with barriers so the fish had less room to dance, shake and throw it back. The fish’s accuracy dropped to 71 percent. The experiment was “very cleverly designed,” says Stefan Mucha, who studies weakly electric fish at the Humboldt University of Berlin. He says it reveals a small but meaningful piece of how the fish integrate electrical information into a usable map, a complex process that has inspired underwater cameras and computer algorithms (算法). “What they do is so complex that we can’t really model it with our greatest computers,” Mucha says. “But it’s just a small fish!” 12. What can we learn about the elephantnose fish in paragraph 1? A. It detects remote barriers. B. It has a remarkable sensing ability. C. It causes distortions to the electric field. D. It creates a three-dimensional image. 13. How did Skeels test her idea? A. By quoting data from previous studies. B. By presenting reasons in a logical way. C By listing examples from diverse perspectives. D. By comparing results under different conditions. 14. What can be inferred from Mucha’s words? A. Fish are attracted by underwater cameras. B. Skeels’ experiment is rather complex. C. The experiment is of great significance. D. Computers help the fish make movements. 15. What is the best title for the passage? A. A Small Fish: Dancing to See B. An Experiment: Revealing a Secret C. A Small Fish: Swimming in the Dark D. An Experiment: Inspiring Computer Technology 【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. 根据第一段中“Instead, it relies on a sense called electrolocation: an organ on its tail produces a weak electric field that pulses outward from its body. Receptors (接受器) on its skin detect distortions (歪曲) to the field caused by objects or creatures nearby, creating a two-dimensional “electric image” of the object being detected.(相反,它依靠一种叫做电定位的感觉:它尾巴上的一个器官产生一个微弱的电场,从身体向外脉冲。它皮肤上的感受器可以检测到附近物体或生物引起的磁场扭曲,从而产生被检测物体的二维“电子图像”。)”可知,象鼻鱼有非凡的感知能力。故选B项。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中“To test the idea, she presented the fish with a choice of two objects behind net-like doors—one object shaped like a sausage associated with a reward of tasty food, the other like a cube or sphere. After training, the fish quickly picked the door with the sausage shape almost 94 percent of the time.(为了验证这个想法,她让鱼从网状门后面的两个物体中选择一个——一个形状像香肠,象征着美味的食物,另一个形状像立方体或球体。经过训练后,这些鱼几乎有94%的几率迅速选择了香肠形状的门。)”可推知,斯基尔斯通过比较不同条件下的结果来检验她的想法。故选D项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“The experiment was “very cleverly designed,” says Stefan Mucha, who studies weakly electric fish at the Humboldt University of Berlin. He says it reveals a small but meaningful piece of how the fish integrate electrical information into a usable map, a complex process that has inspired underwater cameras and computer algorithms (算法).( 在柏林洪堡大学研究弱电鱼的斯特凡·穆夏说,这个实验“设计得非常巧妙”。他说,它揭示了鱼类如何将电子信息整合到可用的地图中,这是一个复杂的过程,启发了水下相机和计算机算法。)”可知,从穆夏的话中可以推断出这个实验很有意义。故选C项。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第二段“But how does the foot-long fish use that 2-D map to perceive a 3-D world? New findings published in Animal Behaviour suggest this creature does a little aquatic (水中的) dance, allowing it to perceive objects from slightly different angles that, when piled together, help distinguish 3-D objects.( 但这条一英尺长的鱼是如何利用二维地图来感知三维世界的呢? 故选A项。 Most people agree that college is the time when things change the most in their lives. Despite his professional commitments and job demands, Naidoo has always found time to lace his running shoes up and hit the pavement. As an amateur athlete who had not been engaging in strict training in recent weeks, he had set relatively low expectations for himself. He had planned to simply enjoy the race and maintain a leisurely pace throughout. It turned out that although he finished last in the race, it was undoubtedly the most meaningful and unforgettable one. Shane Naidoo was approaching the halfway mark of the New Jersey Half Marathon at Newport when Chrystal Rinehold, a female runner in her mid-thirties who was running just ahead of him, unexpectedly collapsed. The entire scene unfolded suddenly. One moment, she was maintaining her pace alongside the other runners; the next moment, she found herself on the ground, giving in to an unseen and mysterious force. Naidoo, who works at JFK University Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey, immediately rushed to her side along with four other runners who had witnessed this incident. His medical instincts kicked in as he swiftly began assessing the situation. Upon conducting a thorough examination of her, he discovered that she was struggling to breathe and barely able to speak. She whispered in a weak voice, “I think I’m dying.” Naidoo strongly suspected that she might be suffering from dehydration or low blood sugar levels. Such conditions could prove deadly for runners, especially during long-distance events like this one. Moreover, he also noticed that she was experiencing chest pain and in a disturbed mental condition. These symptoms were highly alarming and indicated a potential risk of cardiac arrest This situation demanded immediate and decisive action. Naidoo called for medical assistance while giving instructions to people around. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ When he left the hospital Naidoo noticed that the half marathon was still under way. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 Naidoo called for medical assistance while giving instructions to people around. Under his guidance a group of runners formed a circle around them, shielding Chrystal from the crowd and giving Naidoo the space he needed to work. He then quickly gave her first aid and ensuring that she was breathing properly. As he worked, he also kept talking to Chrystal, monitoring her responses to make sure that she remained conscious. The medical team arrived promptly, and she was rushed to a nearby hospital for further treatment, with Naidoo by her side. When he left the hospital, Naidoo noticed that the half marathon was still under way. While there were few runners in sight, he chose to continue. “Even though the race is nearing its end, I must go all out for it,” Naidoo said to himself. His pace was much slower than before, but his will to complete the race didn’t weaken at all. Upon crossing the finishing line, Naidoo was met with cheers from fellow runners who had heard about his heroic efforts. He finished last in the end. However, for Naidoo, this race was a victory in itself because sometimes the most important race is the one you run to help others. 词汇激活 行为类 ①继续:continue/go on ②完成:complete/finish/accomplish ③确保:make sure/ensure/guarantee 情绪类 ①英勇的:heroic/gallant ②意识清醒的:conscious/ aware 【点睛】[高分句型1] As he worked, he also kept talking to Chrystal, monitoring her responses to make sure that she remained conscious. B Heman Bekele whipped up the most dangerous of what he called his “potions” when he was just 7 years old. C Are you happy? C To inspire other artists to work harder. D The elephantnose fish wouldn’t get very far on eyesight alone in the dark rivers of western and central Africa. C. By listing examples from diverse perspectives. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ When he left the hospital, Naidoo noticed that the half marathon was still under way. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
