①Sleep for humans almost always means there is a bed or a mat near here. Animals, however, have many different ways of sleeping.
②For warmth, some animals sleep in groups, such as lions, monkeys, penguins and so on. Elephants also sleep in a group, but they sleep in groups for protection. The larger elephants make a circle (圆圈) around the younger elephants. The larger elephants sleep standing up, while the younger ones lie down to sleep.
③Some animals sleep in trees. Birds will lock (锁) their feet onto a branch (树枝) to keep from falling out of the tree. Other animals, like squirrels, make nests (筑巢) in the trees to sleep in.
④Most animals look for dry places to sleep. However, ducks often sleep in water. So do sea otters. They hold hands when they sleep in groups to keep from floating away (漂走).
⑤Most animals lie down to sleep. However, some large animals, like horses, can sleep standing up. The flamingo sleeps standing on just one leg.

Question: What is the best way to travel from London to Amsterdam?
I am planning to travel from London to Amsterdam. How long does the journey take and what is the best way to travel? Could you please tell me about the trains or ships to get there? The more information, the better. Thanks!
Best answer: There are four ways to travel.
A journey by train is more relaxing than by coach, but a lot more expensive. When you go by train, buy your ticket a long time before you travel. It is usually cheaper.
You can go by car and by ship across the North Sea. This is the most comfortable way to travel but also the most expensive. Book your ticket before you book your hotel. Remember that parking in Amsterdam is very expensive, so stay outside the city centre and travel in by bus or by train.
The third choice is by coach! This is usually the cheapest, but in summer, the coaches sometimes get crowded! And it takes you about twelve hours to get there. However, it will not cost as much as going by train.
Finally, you can fly. It is the fastest and the second cheapest, but you may have to wait for hours at the airport because of bad weather.
Well, I hope this helps! Have a great trip!

①When our taxi went on the streets, I looked with interest at everything around me. What could I see during my short stay in Milan? One answer came into my mind as our taxi went past Duomo di Milano, the largest cathedral (教堂) in Italy.
②The next morning my family and I made our way to the cathedral. It was just a five-minute walk from our hotel. On the roof, there are many statues (雕像). Language students often think they have memory problems. They worry because they can’t remember words. In fact, the problem is not usually with their memory. The problem is with how they study.
To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it’s organized (有条理的). When you put away a book or memory, you can’t just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again.
How can you do this with vocabulary? The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences that include (包含) it. Even better, you can make a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is height (高度), you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.
1.In the writer’s opinion, students can’t remember words because ________.
A.they are too worried B.they don’t like to study
C.they have memory problems D.they don’t use a right way
2.What do you know about memory according to the passage?
A.Short-term memory is seldom used.
B.What we see goes into long-term memory first.
C.We will never forget a word if it goes into long-term memory.
D.We will forget a word soon if it goes into short-term memory.
3.Which is one example of “thinking about the word in new ways” in Paragraph 3?
A.Talking with people that you know. B.Listening to some funny stories.
C.Making sentences with the word. D.Drawing pictures of the word on paper.
4.This passage mainly tells us about ________.
A.how to improve ways to remember words B.how to make the meaning of words stronger
C.short-term and long-term memory D.language students’ problems in study

Natural Disasters
Earthquakes are natural disasters. They are the shaking of the earth’s surface(表面). The earth makes these natural earthquakes in order to release pressure(释放压力).
More than a million earthquakes happen in the world each year. Earthquakes usually last less than a minute but you can feel them. The scary thing about earthquakes is that they begin with no warning. But scientists are still working on the problem.
There are about 20 plates(板块)along the surface of the earth that move slowly all the time next to each other. When the plates touch each other, huge rocks are created(创造)and explode(爆炸)with great power(力量), causing an earthquake. As the plates move, they put pressure on themselves and each other. When the pressure is large enough, the crust(地壳)is forced(被迫)to break.
Shaking and ground breaking are the main effects(影响)created by earthquakes. After an earthquake is over, buildings are usually damaged(破坏)and people get hurt even killed.
Some people think animals can predict(预言)an earthquake. The earliest reference(参考) about unusual animal behavior is from Greece in 373 BC. Rats and snakes reportedly left their homes and headed for safety several days before an earthquake. Scientists can easily explain the cause of unusual animal behavior seconds before humans feel an earthquake. Very few humans notice the smaller P wave that travels the fastest from the earthquake source(源)and arrives before the larger S wave. But many animals are able to feel the P wave seconds before the S wave arrives. As for sensing an earthquake days or weeks before it happens, that’s a different story. Scientists have tried many different ways of predicting earthquakes, but none have been successful. They need to do much research on this subject.
So what should you do when an earthquake begins? If you are inside a building, you should take cover under a table. If you are outside, you should stay out in an open place.
1.An earthquake happens because ________.
A.the earth wants to release pressure
B.there are more creatures on the earth
C.there are about 30 plates along the surface of the earth
D.people damaged the surface of the earth
2.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The places of earthquakes. B.The reasons for earthquakes.
C.The ways of predicting earthquakes. D.The bad result of an earthquake.
3.Some animals ________ so they leave their homes to safe places before an earthquake.
A.are very clever B.can create an earthquake
C.like living in new places with their friends D.can feel the P wave seconds before the S wave arrives
4.The writer probably agrees(同意)that ________.
A.we should protect the animals before earthquakes
B.scientists can know earthquakes before they happen
C.people should learn to keep safe during earthquakes
D.earthquakes are the most dangerous natural disasters

Cookie Monster
“Cookie Monster Christopher, you’d better be careful. You eat too many cookies, and bad things happen to little boys who do that!” Christopher’s mother shouted. Christopher turned a deaf ear to these words. Then at dinner, he once again didn’t react when his mother shook her finger at him.
Christopher went to bed with his stomach full of cookies. Though he felt a little sick, he did not care—until morning. He woke for school and planned to take a shower as usual. But when Christopher saw himself in the mirror, he could not believe his eyes. Christopher turned into a big cookie! He still had arms and legs and a head, but his body was replaced with a cookie!
When Christopher’s mother saw him, she simply shook her head and said, “I told you so!” Then, she took a bite (咬) of him! At school, his science teacher, Ms Shortbread, broke off a piece of Christopher’s cookies body, too. Suddenly, Christopher’s whole class wanted a bite of Christopher’s cookie body.
Christopher couldn’t stop all the hungry people! His cookie body was getting smaller and smaller. If this went on, there would be nothing left of Cookie Monster Christopher. When school ended, Christopher ran all the way home, followed by cookie-hungry classmates the whole way. He ran straight to his room, locked the door, and hid under the covers (被子).
The next morning, Cookie Monster Christopher opened his eyes. He found his dog licking (舔) his feet. “No, Oreo!” he shouted. Christopher threw the covers off and was about to run away from Oreo when he realized that he came back to himself again! Christopher was no longer a cookie!
After that, Christopher would never eat more than one cookie a day.

Last year, my father was busy working, my mother looked after my grandma and my sister started university, so I went to visit my aunt and uncle in Jamaica alone. There I experienced a hurricane (飓风).
I went to Jamaica in December, because between October and mid-December the weather isn’t too hot. However, there are hurricanes during the time, so you have to watch out for that. The Schwebebahn didn’t come easy. In the 1880s, the traffic in Wuppertal was so busy that the government had to develop a new way of travelling. At that time, a man named Eugen Langen was trying a railway under the track to carry products for his company. It was successful so later Eugen put this idea into the Schwebebahn. In that way, the space above the River Wupper got fully used. It turned out to be a very good choice. The Schwebebahn gives special travel experiences to passengers. Its stations are as beautiful as art museums, so passengers won’t be bored while waiting in the stations. A classical train also offers all kinds of services, such as food and drinks. What’s more, people can book this train to have parties or even get married in the air! They will never forget this one-hour journey in the air.

They are all about characters from Bible (圣经). Although many look lovely, I felt kind of scared when I saw a scary one. We climbed to the roof.
【答案】1.D 2.D 3.C 4.A

【答案】1.A 2.B 3.D 4.C
