After my five-year-old daughter made a gift for me, she waved it in front of her 18-month-old sister. When her little sister reached out for it in her eagerness, she held it higher and said firmly, “You’re just a baby. You can’t touch it. Ever!” Her real passion for the gift was not for me, but for her sister, who would be teased by her. Sisterly love is like that. It’s mixed.
When I was five years old, my uncle came to visit. He gave me a funny duck. I asked him what he had brought to my sister. “The same as yours,” he said, “I always give you two girls exactly the same thing.” What terrible news! I had been looking forward to seeing a difference. When I expressed unhappiness to my mother, she said, “Well, he probably didn’t want you two to get in big fights.” Without sister fights, life was boring. My sister was strong and liked to beat me a lot. But underlying all our arguments over “stupid things” was our strong love.
The second realization that “sister” meant something special to me came when we visited the doctor because my sister had a frog in her throat. When it was her turn, a nurse asked me, “What are you shaking your hands for? Your sister is the one who’s getting injected (打针).” I went still, and suddenly noticed that my hands were hung in mid air. But what difference did it make whether the person was me or my sister?
The feeling is strange, but I now understand the confusing feeling of loving and hating the same person, and the necessity of living in a world with other people who are like us and with whom we have to compete and share.
4. Why did the author mention her two daughters in paragraph 1?
A. To describe her daily life. B. To lead to her past memory.
C. To compare their personalities. D. To express her deep motherly love.
5. What made the author’s hands shake when her sister was injected?
A. Care for her sister. B. Tiredness of waiting.
C. Worry to be the next. D. Pain after the treatment.
6. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A. Finding Love in My Family
B. The Important Person in My Life
C. Sisterhood: A Painful Joy and A Joyful Pain
D. Love and Share: Ways to Get on with Your Sister

根据文章第一段最后“Her real passion for the gift was not for me, but for her sister, who would be teased by her. Sisterly love is like that. It’s mixed. (她对这份礼物的真正热情不是为了我,而是为了她的妹妹,她的妹妹会被她取笑。姐妹之爱就是这样。它是混合的。)”以及后文作者开始回忆自己与姐妹之间的往事,可知作者提到她的两个女儿是为了引出自己过去与姐妹相处的回忆,故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“The second realization that “sister” meant something special to me ...I went still, and suddenly noticed that my hands were hung in mid air. But what difference did it make whether the person was me or my sister?
Sisterhood: A Painful Joy and A Joyful Pain

The story is set in a cold November in Washington. Two young women artists, Sue and Johnsy, share a room at the top of a rundown apartment building. Johnsy catches pneumonia (肺炎). The doctor says she is hard to recover unless she can find a reason to live.
“Seven, six,” said Johnsy, in a low voice. “What is it, dear?” asked Sue. “The leaves on the ivy vine (常春藤) are falling faster now. When the last leaf falls off the tree, I must go, too.” said Johnsy, closing her eyes. “Oh, I never heard of such nonsense. Try to sleep,” said Sue. That night, she told Behrman, their neighbor and also a failed artist, about Johnsy’s thoughts and her worry. Behrman alleviated her, “Don’t worry. She will be OK. Some day I will paint a masterpiece, and we shall all live better.”
The next morning, when Johnsy awoke, she found after the beating rain and strong wind, there yet stood out against the wall one green ivy leaf. After another day with heavy rain and wind, the ivy leaf was still there, in the same dark green. Johnsy lay for a long time looking at it through the window. Then she said to Sue, “Something has made that last leaf stay there to show me how wicked I was. It is stupid to want to die.” She raised her voice a little bit, “You may bring me a little soup and I am hungry now.”
The next day after a careful check, the doctor said, “Johnsy’s out of danger. And now I must see another patient downstairs. Behrman caught pneumonia while painting in the rain. The influence of pneumonia on him is serious. There is no hope for him.” All of a sudden, Sue and Johnsy understood everything.
7. What could help Johnsy to recover according to the doctor?
A. Strong inner intention. B. Pleasant natural scenery.
C. Advanced medical treatment. D. Thoughtful care from friends.
8. What does the underlined word “alleviated” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Reminded. B. Praised. C. Comforted. D. Ordered.
9. What can we infer from the last sentence in paragraph 3?
A. Soup has magical ingredients. B. Johnsy regained the hope of life.
C. Johns y had recovered from illness. D. Friendship is chicken soup for the soul.
10. How would Sue and Johnsy probably feel towards Behrman in the end?
A. Proud and anxious. B. Thankful and sad.
C. Satisfied and confused. D. Excited and regretful.
A 8. C 9. B 10. B

根据最后一段“The next day after a careful check, the doctor said, “Johnsy’s out of danger. And now I must see another patient downstairs. Behrman caught pneumonia while painting in the rain. The influence of pneumonia on him is serious. There is no hope for him.” All of a sudden, Sue and Johnsy understood everything.( 第二天,经过仔细检查,医生说:“琼西脱离了危险。

I have a strong passion for English and have done a good job in exams in the past years. So I was extremely excited when I got a chance to attend summer school in the US. I couldn’t wait to apply the textbook to the real life.
But the real life was not as easy as it seemed. Two weeks later there, a challenge appeared. I had to visit a dentist because of a sharp pain in my teeth. When waiting, my heart began to race with worry. “How do I describe my pain in English? Can I understand the dentist’s instructions?” Shortly afterwards, I was called in to see Dr. Smith, a kind-looking man.
After examining, Dr. Smith explained that there was a hole in a tooth that needed to be filled and the filling would be quick. Then he smiled with a question, “Do you have a sweet tooth?”
For a moment, I tried to turn on my brain but the engine just wouldn’t start. I remembered the candy I had enjoyed that very morning, its sweetness still fresh in my memory. I responded honestly, “I had a candy before coming here, but I brushed my teeth. So, there’s no sweet tooth.”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为100个左右;
Dr. Smith laughed, shaking his head as he started the filling.

After coming back home, I changed the way of learning English.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dr. Smith laughed, shaking his head as he started the filling. It went well. I was relieved yet puzzled. Dr. Smith explained, “My boy, ‘have a sweet tooth’ has nothing to do with brushing teeth. It means enjoying sugary foods very much. But remember to brush teeth after having sweets, dear.” I felt embarrassed but I was so grateful because Dr. Smith not only helped me with my pain but also English learning.
After coming back home, I changed the way of learning English. Instead of only focusing on tests, I began to feel the richness of the language. I communicated with native speakers using idioms and expressions that brought the language to life. Through this journey, I realized that having a sweet tooth—whether for candy or language —was about allowing it to enrich your life.

A To describe her daily life.
C
The next day after a careful check the doctor said, “Johnsy’s out of danger.
A. Reminded. B. Praised. C. Comforted. D. Ordered.
