The most wonderful thing about this trip is mountain climbing. ▲ So we put on a harness (保护带) before we start climbing the mountain. I’m afraid of falling down. Mum keeps staying with me and we finally get to the top! We shout (呼喊) and jump up and down.

Well, Marsh keeps lots of chickens, and the Maremma dog (马雷马牧羊犬) helps watch them and does a good job! “I think the Maremma dog can help save the penguins too,” Marsh says. And that really works. Our eating habits are very important for good health and a strong body. There are times when most of us like eating sweets and ice cream better than vegetables and rice. Sweets and ice cream are not bad for us if we eat them at the end of a meal. But if we eat them before a meal, they may take away our appetite (胃口). It’s important for us to have each meal at a regular time every day. When we feel worried or excited, we may not want to eat. A long time ago some judges in England often decided whether a man was telling the truth by giving him some dry bread to eat. If the man could not swallow the bread, it meant that he was not telling the truth. Though this seems strange, the judges thought it was a good way of finding out the truth. A man who is worrying about something has difficulty in swallowing anything dry, because he loses his appetite.

For many people, our closest encounter with wild animals is at a zoo. Zoos let us see amazing animals like lions, tigers, and even small lizards up close. It’s fun and educational, but is it really the best place for the animals?
In the past, people could only see wild animals as stuffed displays in museums. Later, explorers caught live animals and showed them in menageries, which were early zoos. Back then, people didn’t care much about the animals’ well-being. Today’s zoos are different. They now provide bigger spaces and try to make the animals’ homes look like their natural environments.
Some people think it’s cruel to keep animals in cages just for entertainment. However, zoos argue that they help educate people about wildlife conservation. In the UK, a law passed in 1981 requires zoos to teach visitors about conservation. Many zoos also help support and fund programs to protect wildlife.
Zoos often say they are important for saving endangered species that could become extinct because of climate change. Robert Young, a professor of conservation, said many species would not exist without zoos. For example, Chester Zoo in the UK helped save the golden skiffia fish from disappearing.
As the debate about zoos continues, new technologies like virtual reality may offer different ways to experience wildlife.

3.What does the word “endangered” in the passage mean?
A.safe and protected B.likely to become extinct
C.common and widespread D.healthy and thriving

A.Zoos have always provided large spaces for animals.
B.The main purpose of zoos has shifted to solely entertainment.
C.Zoos in the past focused on animal welfare and education.
D.Modern zoos are required to educate visitors about wildlife conservation.
5.What is Robert Young’s attitude toward zoos?
A.He believes zoos are cruel and should be shut down.

Musical Pets
Some children have music boxes. Others keep birds. In Japan, boys and girls often keep musical insects as pets.
There are more than a dozen different kinds of singing insects, but crickets are the most common. In Japan, cricket pets are kept in bamboo cages. It usually takes a few days for a cricket to become used to its new home. It will recognize its owner’s voice and sing without stopping when he or she is near. Having a cricket in the home is supposed to bring good luck. In return for its singing, the cricket is fed small pieces of fresh vegetables it can eat.
Japanese children may catch their crickets and some other singing insects in their own yards and gardens. Or if they have money to buy them, they may go to a store, just as you might buy a pet goldfish or a pet parakeet.
You would be amazed to hear the insects’ different range of musical notes. Kusahibari, known as the grass lark, sings with a clear, metallic ring. Matsumushi, called the pine insect, makes sharp sounds. An insect called the ka tan sings soft, trembling notes. Lucky is the boy or girl who owns a suzumushi, whose song sounds like the soft, clear sound of a bell.
Insect concerts are held on late summer evenings in parks, gardens and other open grounds. Beautiful sounds fill the air as adults and children gather with their musical pets.
The main event on these happy evenings is the activity of “Freeing the Insects.” Silence falls over the crowd as the cages are opened. As soon as the insects realize they are free, they fly away with a burst of song.
Since the musical insects live only from spring to fall, they are freed so they can breed and lay eggs before they die. The following spring, Japanese boys and girls are happily rewarded with a new crop of musical insects.

Charlie Condell, the round-the-world cyclist
“I am going to cycle around the world! I wish to become the youngest person to do so!”
Charlie Condell posted this message on his Facebook page at the beginning of last year.
Early last July, the 18-year-old left his home in Bristol, England, and started his bike trip around the world.
To set a round-the-world biking trip record, a person must travel in one direction (方向) and start and end in the same place. He or she must travel the distance around the world — 40,072 kilometers. The person is allowed to fly and take boats, but most of the trip must be completed on a bike.
Charlie didn’t have anyone travelling with him to help him. He carried his own gear and camped out most nights.
The cyclist recorded his trip on a website. The pictures and notes he posted show a young man having the time of his life.
However, the biking trip was hard. Charlie had to deal with rain, wind and flat tires. What’s more, his bike and all his gear were stolen in Australia. After Charlie wrote about this on the website, offers of help poured in. He soon had new clothes and a new bike and was on his way again.
Charlie says the trip taught him patience and gave him confidence. “There’s very little that truly frightens me anymore,” the cyclist adds.
On March 11, Charlie returned to Bristol, England. He completed the trip in just 248 days. The young cyclist made his wish a reality.
