I came out of my room this morning and found Mom and Dad standing in front of the TV. On the screen, Tony Verrazo, the weatherman said, “Calvin has turned west and is headed for land.”
I didn’t understand what was happening, but suddenly Mom and Dad started rushing around.
“You pick up coconuts, Jason.” Dad said.
“Coconuts?” I was confused. We had coconut trees in the yard, but why pick up coconuts now?
I wanted to ask, but Dad had no time for me.
I had no idea what was going on but I wanted to see Calvin, and I went to the beach. It was empty except for two men. One had a camera and the other was talking into a microphone. I recognized him—Tony Verrazo!
“Hi, kid. What’s up?” said Tony, smiling
“Oh, I’m taking a break from picking up coconuts,” I lied.
“Coconuts,” he said thoughtfully. “I forgot all about them. Stand over here and tell the camera who you are and what you’re doing.”
“Hi,” I took the microphone. “I’m Jason and I’m picking up coconuts because Calvin is coming.”
“Thanks, kid.” Tony said, “You’d better head home and finish your job!”
I had to do the silly job because Tony made me tell everyone what I was doing.
After hours of working in the yard, I filled up all the bags I could find. When I got inside, history was repeating itself. Mom and Dad were standing in front of the TV, and Tony was talking.
“Hurricane-force (飓风级的) winds can make flying coconuts really dangerous! Don’t forget to pick them up! And we want to give credit to (表扬) the person who came up with the idea,” he said.
There on TV, I was holding the microphone, saying, “Hi, I’m Jason, and I’m picking up coconuts.”

What is SQ3R?
SQ3R was first developed by researchers at Ohio State University. SQ3R is a useful technique (技巧) for understanding written information.
SQ3R stands for the five techniques you should use to read a book: Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review.
Survey (S): Scan the material to get the overview (概述). Read the headings to see the major points. Read the introductory paragraphs and the summary at the end of the chapter (章,篇). Remember, you are scanning the material and not actually reading every sentence.
Question (Q): Make questions that can be answered during the reading of the material. This will give a purpose to your reading. Take a heading and turn it into a question. For example, if a heading in a chapter about cell division is in your biology text, make a question by turning the title around: “How does cell division occur (发生)?” or “How many steps are involved in cell division?”
Read (R): Now you read the material and try to find answers to your questions. This is a careful reading, line by line. You may want to take notes or make flashcards.
Recite (R): As you read, look away from your book and notes and try to answer your questions. This checks your learning and helps to put that information in your memory.
Review (R): To check your memory, scan portions (部分) of the material or your notes to verify (核实) your answers. Review the material and note the main points under each heading. This review step helps you retain (记住) the material.
The SQ3R method is just one technique that can be used to understand and retain information when you read. Students learn in different ways. Therefore you should be aware of your learning styles. Knowing whether you are an auditory (learn by hearing), visual (lean by seeing) or kinaesthetic (hands-on) learner helps you to understand your best leaning environment. The SQ3R technique of reading can help to improve your reading skills no matter what your style is.
27. If you want to know the overview of the material, you should ________.
A. read each sentence line by line carefully
B. avoid looking at the major points
C. focus on the meaning of the first paragraph
D. read the headings, the introductory and the summary parts
28. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Making questions about the material will lead us to read on purpose.
B. Careful reading can check what we have learned by reading.
C. The reciting step helps us to know our learning styles clearly.
D. The review step helps us to get the answers to the questions.
29. What is the writer’s main purpose of writing this passage?
A. To tell us different ways to memorize things.
B. To explain the research on biology.
C. To encourage us to read more materials.
D. To give us some help to improve our reading skills.
D
As your phone’s alarm blares (发出刺耳鸣响), you slowly open one eye. How can it be morning already? It seems like it was only a few hours ago that you finished your homework. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many teens struggle to get enough sleep.
According to the Sleep Foundation, nearly 60 percent of middle school students and more than 70 percent of high school students in the U.S. aren’t getting the recommended (被推荐的) 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep a night. In Cherry Hill, New Jersey, a group of students have formed an organization called Cherry Hill Students for Later School Start Times. It wants local middle and high schools to push back the start of the school day to 8:30 a.m.
In fact, schools in several states have changed to later start times in recent years. Research shows that inadequate (不足的) sleep can negatively affect students’ health and grades. Starting the school day too early can deprive teens of much-needed sleep. Studies show that well-rested teens are more likely to get good grades and less likely to suffer from (患有) depression.
As Aiden Rood, the co-founder of Cherry Hill Students for Later School Start Times, explains, “Kids are healthier in general when they start later, and they do better in school.”
However, not everyone thinks schools should push back the start of the school day.
Many school teachers say delaying (延迟) the start of the school day would create a number of challenges. First, school buses would have to be rescheduled, more money would be needed. There’s also concern (担心) that later school start times could leave some kids walking home in the dark. Changing school hours could also create child care problems for some parents.
In addition, opponents (反对者) say, later school start times would leave teens with fewer hours for after-school activities and homework. That’s what Erin Isherwood, a parent in Chico, California is worried about. The start time at her kids’ high school was pushed back 45 minutes this year. “My son has an exercise class that he absolutely (绝对地) loves at a gym, now he can’t go.” She explains.
30. The words “deprive teens of much-needed sleep” in Paragraph 3 are closest in meaning to ________.
A. provide teens with much-needed sleep B. increase teens’ much-needed sleep
C. take much-needed sleep away from teens D. talk about teens’ much-needed sleep
31. According to the passage, what is a possible benefit of later school start times?
A. Students can get up early to do more exercise.
B. Students can get more knowledge about their health.
C. Students can finish their homework more easily.
D. Students can get better grades.
32. Some people don’t agree with later school start times because ________.
A. students will have more time for after-school activities
B. some students will walk home in the dark
C. students will have to take school bus to school
D. students will get enough sleep
33. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A. Should Your School Day Start Later? B. When Is the Right Time to Sleep?
C. What Can Students Do After School? D. Is Enough Sleep Good or Bad for Students?
第二部分

四、 阅读表达(共10分, 第1-3题每小题2分, 第4小题4分)
Great Grandmother Still Studying
At the age of 95, Nola Ochs became one of the world’s oldest college graduates. Ochs received her bachelor’s degree (学士学位) in general studies and history at Fort Hays State University in May, 2007.
At her graduation ceremony, the crowd gave her a warm welcome. And they kept standing until the names of all 2176 graduates were read. Her granddaughter, Alexandra Ochs, also appeared on the list. Nola was interviewed by a famous magazine. She seemed a little embarrassed by all the attention. “I was just another student,” she said in the interview. However, none of the other graduates was entered into the Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest college graduate at that time. The former record holder was Mozelle Richardson, who got a degree from the University of Oklahoma in 2004 at the age of 90.
Nola has a family that includes 3 sons, 13 grandchildren and 15 even younger ones. After the death of her husband, she started taking classes sometimes but not often in 1972 at Dodge City Community College. When she moved to Fort Hays in 2006, she completed the final 30 hours which were required for her degree.
Kansas Board of Regents member Dan Lykins addressed the graduates and praised Ochs’ achievements at the graduation ceremony. “Follow the footsteps of people like Nola and never give up,” Lykins said.
However, this is not the end of her story. After taking time to help with the family wheat harvest, Ochs went back to university and started pursuing her master’s degree (硕士学位), 2010. Nola Qchs continued taking classes until she was 100 and died at the age of 105 in 2016. And at that time, she had achieved her goal of writing a book about her life experiences. When asked for her life advice, she said “Buy the plane ticket!”. She meant that people should take advantage of life’s opportunities and not wait until tomorrow.
34. When did Nola Ochs receive her bachelor’s degree?
35. What did she start doing after the death of her husband?
36. What did her words “Buy the plane ticket!” mean?
37. Would you like to be a person like Nola Ochs? Why or why not? (Please give two reasons.)

All day, I thought I had to pick up coconuts just because I was little and had to stay out of everybody’s way. Now I realized what Calvin really was and that what I had done actually mattered.

【答案】27. D 28. A 29.

【答案】30. C 31. D 32. B 33. A
根据“Research shows that inadequate (不足的) sleep can negatively affect students’ health and grades.”可知,如果推迟上学时间,学生将有足够的睡眠时间,那么他们将会取得更好的成绩。故选D。
32. 细节理解题。根据“There’s also concern (担心) that later school start times could leave some kids walking home in the dark.”可知,有人不赞成推迟上学的时间,因为这样学生要很晚才放学回家。故选B。
33. 最佳标题题。根据“Research shows that inadequate (不足的) sleep can negatively affect students’ health and grades.”,“However, not everyone thinks schools should push back the start of the school day.”,“In addition, opponents (反对者) say, later school start times would leave teens with fewer hours for after-school activities and homework.”及结合文章内容可知,本文主要就是否应该推迟上学的时间进行了议论。故选A。

【答案】34. In May, 2007. 35. She started taking classes sometimes. 36. It meant that people should take advantage of life’s opportunities and not wait until tomorrow. 37. Yes, I’d love to. Because it’s never too old to learn. I want to improve myself.(本题为开放性试题,言之成理即可)
