The expression, “everybody’s doing it,” is very much at the center of peer pressure (同伴压力). It is a social influence applied on an individual in order to get that person to act or believe in a 11 way as a larger group. This 12 can be negative or positive, and can exist in both large and small groups.
People are social creatures by nature, and so it is hardly 13 that some part of their self-respect comes from the approval (认可) of others. This explains why the approval of peers, and the fear of 14 , is such a powerful force in many people’s lives. This instinct (本能) drives people to dress one way at home and another way at work, or to answer a simple “fine” when a stranger asks “how are you?” 15 it is not necessarily true.
For certain individuals, 16 for social acceptance is so important that it becomes an addiction (上瘾): in order to satisfy the desire (渴望), they may go too far and 17 their sense of right and wrong. Some young people may feel forced to use drugs, or join gangs (帮派) that 18 criminal behavior. Some adults may sometimes end up in debt (负债) because they are unable to hold back the desire to buy a house or car that they can’t afford in order to 19 the peers.
20 , peer pressure is not always negative. A student whose friends do well in 21 may be motivated to work harder and get good grades. Players on a sports team may feel driven to play harder in order to help the team win. This type of influence can also get a friend off drugs, or to help an adult develop a good habit or drop a bad one.
Although peer pressure is sometimes quite 22 , some people may not even notice that it is affecting his or her behavior. For this reason, when making important decisions, such as choosing a career path or deciding on a major investment, simply going with an instinct is 23 . Instead, people should seriously consider 24 they feel attracted to taking a certain action. Is it because of their own values, long-term goals, or personal interests? They should also consider whether the real 25 behind their action is simply that everyone else is doing the same thing. Taking the time to think and make a wiser decision can lead to a proper and fulfilling life.

The Chinese language differs from Western languages in that, instead of an alphabet (字母表), it uses characters (汉字) which stand for ideas, objects or deeds. Chinese words are formed by putting together different characters. In many cases, a single character can also make up a word. As one kind of the most ancient characters, Chinese characters have played an important part in the development of Chinese culture. At first, ancient Sumerian and ancient Egyptian symbols existed (存在), but only Chinese characters are still in use today. The history of the Chinese language can be examined by looking at how these characters developed.
Chinese writing began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese writing. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of animals in the snow and noticed that the appearance of each one was different. Then he had the idea that he could use different shapes to represent different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified (简化) and others have been made more difficult over time.
However, as a whole, the characters have developed from drawings into standard forms. The character for a mountain was at first three mountaintops together. This became one mountaintop and three lines, and over time turned into the character used nowadays.
Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by putting two or more characters together. For example, “rest” was made up of the characters for a man and a tree. The character “prisoner” was formed with a “man” inside a square. Other characters were developed for directions and numbers. It is easy to distinguish (区别) their meanings by looking at them, for example, the characters for “up” and “down”, which are opposites of each other.
Though these kinds of characters show meanings, one of their shortcomings is that they do not show how they should be pronounced. Therefore, a way was developed to have one part of a character represent the meaning and the other suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese characters used today were made this way.
In the 1950s the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in the hope to make learning to read and write more understandable to a large number of people, which would increase literacy (读写能力) across the country. And now they have widespread use in China’s mainland.
29.How did the writer introduce the Chinese characters?
A.By giving examples. B.By providing causes.
C.By expressing opinions. D.By comparing (比较) facts.
30.The sentence “Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects.” would best be placed at the beginning of _________.
A.Paragraph 5 B.Paragraph 4 C.Paragraph 3 D.Paragraph 2
31.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Chinese characters have turned into standard forms, which are easier than before.
B.Chinese characters we use today have been accepted by large numbers of people.
C.Chinese words and English words are both formed by putting alphabets and characters together.
D.Chinese characters existed at the very beginning and are still in use today like other ancient symbols.
32.What might be the best title for the passage?
A.How to form Chinese characters.
B.The history of the Chinese language.
C.The development of Chinese characters.
D.The difference between Chinese and Western language.
【答案】29.A 30.B 31.B 32.C
【导语】本文主要介绍了汉字的发展历史。
29.细节理解题。根据“For example, ‘rest’ was made up of the characters for a man and a tree. The character ‘prisoner’ was formed with a ‘man’ inside a square.”可知作者通过举例来介绍汉字。故选A。
30.推理判断题。根据第二、三段可知,第二段讲述了汉字是从物体的图画演变而来的,第三段介绍了汉字已经从图画发展到标准形式。所以“Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects.并不是所有的汉字都是从物体的图画演变而来的”适合放在第四段,承接第二、三段。故选B。
31.细节理解题。 根据“In the 1950s the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in the hope to make learning to read and write more understandable to a large number of people, which would increase literacy (读写能力) across the country. And now they have widespread use in China’s mainland.”可知,我们今天使用的汉字已经被很多人所接受。故选B。
32.标题归纳题。本文主要介绍了汉字的发展历史以及重要性,所以“汉字的发展”为标题最合适。故选C。
C
When we say we’re “seeing red,” we feel angry. “Feeling blue” means we’re sad. Calling someone “yellow” means the person is afraid. People use these phrases every day. But do colours really influence our feelings?
Is there a psychology (心理学) of colour?
We think of colour as a result of activities in our eyes and minds, so it makes sense to believe that different colours influence our moods.
Artists clearly use colours to make viewers respond (回应) to their work. Pablo Picasso’s Blue Period paintings from 1901 to 1904 express sadness after his friend Casagemas died.
Other people try to manipulate us with colours. Companies use colours in ads to make us know their messages well. Product designers use colours to catch our attention to their goods.
“The connection between colours and moods is so widely believed,” says psychologist, Lynn Olzak at Miami University in Ohio. “But when you actually go out and try to find research to prove, it’s not always there. We just don’t know whether it’s true or not.”
What is it about colour?
With the difficulties, researchers have done some research on how people respond to colours. Studies found much stronger responses (反应) to a colour’s brightness and saturation. Brightness means lightness or darkness. Saturation is how pure (纯净) a colour is.
In one study, researchers from British Columbia tested responses to “Rainbow Paint” ads. Brightly coloured ads led to greater feelings of excitement and more positive (正面的) opinions of the ads. People also liked ads more when they had greater colour saturation.
Colour is a huge part of our lives, so it’s possible that it influences our moods. However, researchers are a long way from making conclusions about how different colours should make us feel. At the same time, you had better decorate your room in your own favourite colours. After all, your personal tastes say a lot about what makes you happy.
33.The writer mentioned different phrases about colours in paragraph 1 to ________.
A.teach readers the phrases B.show the writer’s feelings
C.prove the writer’s opinion D.introduce the subject to readers
34.What does the underlined word “manipulate” mean in the passage?
A.操纵 B.迷惑 C.治疗 D.安慰
35.What should companies do when making ads according to the study of British Columbia?
A.Use more colours in ads.
B.Avoid dark and pale colours in ads.
C.Mix different colours in ads.
D.Draw rainbows in ads.
36.Which of the following may the writer agree?
A.It’s true that colours decide our moods.
B.It’s wise to use colours to express ourselves clearly.
C.Companies should use ads to become successful.
D.We’d better choose our favourite colours in daily life.
【答案】33.D 34.A 35.B 36.D
【导语】本文主要讲述了颜色心理学研究颜色对人类行为和感觉的影响。
33.推理判断题。根据第一段“When we say we’re ‘seeing red,’ we feel angry. ‘Feeling blue’ means we’re sad. Calling someone ‘yellow’ means the person is afraid. People use these phrases every day. ”可知,作者提到这些短语是为了引入主题,即颜色是否真的影响我们的情感和心理。故选D。
34.词义猜测题。根据“Other people try to manipulate us with colours. Companies use colours in ads to make us know their messages well. Product designers use colours to catch our attention to their goods.”可知,公司在广告中使用颜色让我们更好地了解他们的信息。产品设计师使用颜色来吸引我们对他们的商品的注意力。故划线单词“manipulate”意为“操纵,利用颜色达到某种目的”。故选A。
35.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Brightly coloured ads led to greater feelings of excitement and more positive (正面的) opinions of the ads. People also liked ads more when they had greater colour saturation.”可知,明亮的颜色可以让人更兴奋,对广告有更积极的看法,故而推测出做广告时,会避免使用暗和浅的颜色。故选B。
36.细节理解题。根据“At the same time, you had better decorate your room in your own favourite colours.”可知,作者建议最好用自己喜欢的颜色装饰房间。故选D。

One day, a father and his son went to a kite flying festival.
When they arrived, there were already many adults and their children playing in the park. When the son saw the sky filled with colorful kites in different shapes, he was excited and wanted to get one too. His father agreed to buy one for him. So they went to a kite shop and chose a beautiful one.
With the string (线) in hand, the son started to fly the kite. Soon, the kite was high up in the sky. After a while, the son said, “Father, it seems that the string is stopping the kite from flying higher. If we cut it, it will be free and fly even higher. Can we cut it?” The father didn’t reply, but just cut the string off the reel (绕轴). Suddenly, the kite began to go higher, which made the son much happier. However, to his surprise, the kite was coming down. They waited for quite some time. Slowly, it fell onto the grass. The son felt upset and asked, “I thought that after cutting the string, the kite would fly higher. Why did it fall down?” The father smiled and said, “The role of the string was not stopping the kite from flying higher, but helping it stay in the sky, because the kite itself can’t fly up.”
By using the string you help the kite go up in the right direction. When you cut the string, it could not support the kite. In our life, we may sometimes feel like there are certain things that are holding us back and stopping us from growing. But in fact, these might be the things that support us most. We can really grow up and become stronger by realizing the importance of these things.
37.Why did the father and son go to the park?
A.To make a kite. B.To watch others fly kites.
C.To attend a kite flying festival. D.To play with other children.
38.What did the son think the string was doing to the kite?
A.Helping it fly higher. B.Stopping it from flying higher.
C.Making it more beautiful. D.Keeping it from falling down.
39.Why did the kite fall down after the string was cut?
A.Because there was no wind. B.Because it was too heavy.
C.Because the string was needed to support it. D.Because the son didn’t fly it properly.
40.What might the writer of this story want to tell us?
A.Kites need strings to fly high in the sky. B.We should always listen to our parents.
C.Some things seem to hold us back but help us. D.Flying kites is not an easy activity.
【答案】37.C 38.B 39.C 40.C

38.细节理解题。根据“Father, it seems that the string is stopping the kite from flying higher. ”可知儿子认为绳子似乎阻止了风筝飞得更高。故选B。
39.细节理解题。根据“The role of the string was not stopping the kite from flying higher, but helping it stay in the sky, because the kite itself can’t fly up”可知绳子的作用不是阻止风筝飞得更高时,而是帮助它留在天空中,因为风筝本身不能飞起来,所以因为没有绳子的支撑,所以风筝掉了下来。故选C。
40.推理判断题。根据“In our life, we may sometimes feel like there are certain things that are holding us back and stopping us from growing. But in fact, these might be the things that support us most.”可知在我们的生活中,我们有时会觉得有些事情阻碍了我们的成长,但事实上,这些可能是最支持我们的东西。故选C。

However, to his surprise, the kite was coming down. They waited for quite some time. Slowly, it fell onto the grass. The son felt upset and asked, “I thought that after cutting the string, the kite would fly higher.
