You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine the two singing opera in English instead of speaking poetic Chinese?
Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions (《红楼梦》), written by Cao Xueqin (1715—1763) in the Qing dynasty. Now the book has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, US, the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan.
Most opera’s creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures, including the director and playwrights. Their understanding of both cultures helped them change a Chinese class into a foreign-language opera.
The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters and hundreds characters.
But the opera with David Henry Hwang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Hwang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a heart broking tragedy (悲剧) that everyone would understand.
The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes and stage settings (布景). He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin showed up on stage, there was usually water around her on the stage.
The creators considered it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to Western audiences. Hwang told China Daily he was happy to “have made a contribution (贡献) to the land where my parents were born.”

Is rice your favorite staple food (主食)? Over 90 percent of the world’s rice is eaten in the Asia-Pacific region, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. However, eating rice can increase the risk of developing health problems such as diabetes (糖尿病). Now, scientists in the Philippines have created a new variety of rice that may help alleviate the growing burden (重担) of diabetes.
White rice has a high glycemic index (GI, 升糖指数), which can cause blood sugar levels to rise quickly. Research has found a connection between eating large amounts of rice, particularly white rice, and an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease.
Currently, around 537 million people around the world have diabetes, with over 60 percent of them living in Asia. This number is expected to reach 783 million by 2045, according to the International Diabetes Federation.
To fight this issue (问题), researchers at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines have teamed up with various global institutions (机构). Based on the IRRI’s large rice gene bank, they examined 380 seed samples over 10 years to identify genes with a lower GI and higher protein content. They then combined (组合) them to develop a new, healthier type of rice.
The new rice has a very low GI and contains twice the amount of protein typically found in regular rice. Rice varieties with higher protein content may contribute to (有助于) slower digestion and absorption rates (消化和吸收速度), meaning they may be able to help control blood sugar levels.
According to the IRRI’s Director General Yvonne Pinto, this new type of rice can help meet important goals for food security (安全). “This could have a big impact (影响) in Asia, as well as in Africa, among the rice-consuming countries (大米消费国),” Nese Sreenivasulu, a scientist at IRRI told The Guardian.
So far, the rice has only been grown in IRRI laboratories. There are plans to start growing in India and the Philippines to help the poor.

C.In England. D.In China.
20.What might be the best title of the passage?
A.A Chinese Classic-A Dream of Red Mansions
B.A Foreign Opera Based on A Dream of Red Mansions

21.What does the underlined word “alleviate” in the first paragraph mean?
A.Increase. B.Reduce. C.Cause. D.Maintain.
22.According to the passage, which region has the highest percentage of people with diabetes?
A.Asia. B.Europe.
C.Africa. D.North America.
23.What was the primary aim of the research conducted at the IRRI?
A.To increase the yield of rice crops.
B.To develop a rice variety with a higher glycemic index.
C.To create a healthier rice with lower GI and higher protein.
D.To identify the most common form of diabetes.
24.Based on the information provided, where has the new rice variety been grown so far?
A.In various countries across Asia.
B.In Africa and South America.
C.Only in IRRI laboratories.
D.In India, the Philippines, and the United States.
25.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The Asia-Pacific Region’s Rice Consumption. B.The Future of Rice Production
C.A New Variety of Rice to Combat Diabetes D.IRRI Helps Stop Diabetes in Asia

A.The Asia-Pacific Region’s Rice Consumption. B.The Future of Rice Production
