Insectarium
Insects play a vital role in our New York City community by decomposing the city’s organic matter and pollinating (授粉) the vast majority of our food-bearing plants. In this course, students will explore insect biodiversity, human health, and the Museum scientists that have contributed research and specimens (标本) to the Insectarium. They will practice various insect collection methods in the field and preparation techniques back in the lab. Using the Museum’s insect collections and new technologies, students will explore a variety of digital tools that allow them to study these tiny creatures in new, more visible ways.

Lexie Alford, 21, said she recently became the youngest person to visit every country. Though her achievement is yet to be confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records, Alford said she had been to 196 countries. While her adventures may have looked attractive and exciting on her social media account, Alford faced various difficulties such as visa rejections, financial struggles, and health issues like malaria and food poisoning.
For most people, the barrier to seeing the world is lack of money, but Alford managed to fund her travels largely on her own. She started working multiple jobs and saving everything she had earned since she was 12 years old. Additionally, her mother owns a travel agency and it has helped her find the best deals and book ahead of time, contributing to significant savings on flights and hotels.
As a solo female traveler, Alford prioritized safety when deciding how long to stay in a country, in addition to budget and personal interest. She spent over a month in countries like Egypt and Switzerland, where there was so much she could do and there were ways to make those trips financially reasonable. Then there are some countries like Mali, South Sudan, and Somalia which she would have loved to spend more than a few days exploring, but unfortunately she didn't have the budget to take the proper security precautions necessary to travel throughout those countries safely. Despite experiencing intense loneliness at times, Alford thinks that solo travel is a rewarding experience that everyone should have at least once in their lives.
After her travels, Alford now believes that every problem has a solution if you work hard enough. There are also a lot of sacrifices you have to make if you want to travel the world, but if it's something you' re truly passionate about, it only takes courage to pursue it.
24. What word best characterizes Alford's journey to 196 countries?
A. Eventful. B. Pleasant. C. Costly. D. Romantic.
25. How did Alford finance travel expenses?
A. By securing free flights and hotel stays. B. By getting support from her parents.
C. By managing her mother's travel agency. D. By taking jobs and setting aside earnings.
26. What accounts for Alford's short stay in countries like Mali?
A. Limited funds for safety measures. B. Lack of interest in their attractions.
C. Intense loneliness during solo travel. D. Difficulty in communicating with locals.
27. What does Alford highlight about his world travel in the last paragraph?
A. Sacrifices are often necessary. B. Every problem has a solution.
C. Genuine enthusiasm counts most. D. Spirit of adventure is appreciated.
C
The oak tree has been in southern England continuously for 12,000 years. But does it have a future?
By 2050, London’s weather could resemble that of Barcelona, with long stretches of summer drought. These ancient trees were not designed to thrive in such conditions. Around the world, millions of creatures facing unprecedented temperatures and habitat loss are on the move.
We do not tend to think of trees as migratory: they are slow-growing and rooted to the ground. Faced with this problem, the ecologist Charlie Gardner is one of a growing number proposing a radical, controversial solution: we help the trees on their march. Some scientists advocate moving individual species hundreds of kilo-metres north, within the country and from abroad. Others say entire ecosystems should be trans-located, moving multiple species at once.
The “assisted migration” is divisive. Conservationists have long argued against introducing non-native species. They have concerns about unintended consequences of assisted migration. “Large-scale moving of ecosystems can’t be undone (撤销), so should be very much a last choice,” said Andrew Allen from the Woodland Trust. Allen believes we should prioritise helping native trees adapt to changes by encouraging natural regeneration, expanding and connecting existing woodlands.
But others say those arguments fail to deal with speed or size of change caused by the climate crisis. “Earlier in my career the narrative was all about restoring past baselines, and then, as I got more independent in my research, I realised that’s impossible. We are changing the climate so much, so we have to be a little more inventive. When we have examples of assisted migration, it’s often with species which are absolutely on the edge of extinction and have run out of other options,” said Sarah Dalrymple, a conservation ecologist from Liverpool University, who is part of the task force. She wants to see assisted migration explored earlier, working with species before their populations become so small. “You can never get rid of all the risks, but there is also risk in inaction,” she said. “The risk of inaction is increasing every day.”
28. What is the problem facing ancient trees in London?
A. Long summer. B. Habitat destruction.
C. Extreme weather. D. Slow growth.
29. Which of the following statements may Andrew Allen agree with?
A. Large-scale moving of ecosystems is impossible.
B. Assisted migration may contribute to bad results.
C. Non-native species are beneficial to ecosystems.
D. Native species can survive changes by themselves.
30 What does Sarah Dalrymple urge people to do in the last paragraph?
A. Stop changing the climate.
B. Have more options to help species.
C. Help native trees to adapt to climate changes.
D. Take action earlier to prevent species’ extinction.
31. What might be the author’s attitude towards assisted migration?
A. Supportive. B. Cautious. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
D
Chances are that you’ve heard the phrase “like a moth (飞蛾) to a fire” — and probably seen it in action at a night time campfire or barbecue, too.
It turns out, however, this age-old saying may not be quite right. Rather than being attracted to light, moths’ tendency to fly toward brightness is a behavioral response to help them determine which way is up, suggests a new study published today in the journal Nature Communications.
Unlike humans, most insects don’t have vestibule (前庭的) systems to help them maintain direction in space. “But they do have a system that allows them to really quickly tell what’s bright and what’s dark, and give them feedback about the sky so that they can fly stably,” Sondhi, the leading researcher, says, “If they mess that up, they start crashing or they go too high and then they lose their speed.”
What if the light is spread over a wide area rather than coming from a singular point? The researchers stretched a large white sheet across theatre top and shot a UV light on it. “If the insects were truly attracted by the light, they should fly up toward it,” says Sam Fabian, a study co-author and insect researcher at Imperial College in London.” Instead the insects flew straight through this illuminated (照明的) passage, flying how they would do during the day.”
The team then placed the sheet on the ground and shined the light on it, which is when something truly strange happened: “All these moths flying over it turned upside down and crashed out of the sky,” Fabian says.
These behaviors suggest that artificial light can cause a mismatch between the insects’ sense of which way is up and the true direction. This behavioral natural ability could spell trouble for insects’ populations. Satellite data has revealed that the use of artificial light has skyrocketed over the past decade, with the world getting 2 percent brighter each year. Depending on how lights are used, their shine could catch insects in a tiring orbit, or send them falling to their death.
32. What is the function of the old saying mentioned at the beginning?
A. To lead in a new theory. B. To demonstrate a common sense.
C. To clarify a complex concept. D. To present a reasonable argument.
33. According to the research the insects confirm their direction when flying .
A. By sensing the UV light. B. By flying at a stable speed.
C. By approaching the position of light. D. By distinguishing brightness and darkness.
34. Which of the following can replace the word “spell” in the last paragraph?
A. Spark. B. Tackle. C. Cause. D. Prevent.
35. What might be the best title of the passage?
A. Moth and Illumination: The Distraction of Flight.
B. Moth and Confusion: Blind Pursuit of Brightness.
C. Moth and Fire: The Implication of the Old Saying.
D. Moth and Brightness: The Truth of Locating Direction.
It is an efficient way for you to make the most of mind mapping to create projects, plans and ideas. ____36____ Here are the four steps of mind mapping and how you can apply them in your life.
____37____ If we take the example of presenting something to an audience, ask yourself, “What exactly do I want to tell my audience?” and “What do I want them to leave knowing?” The clearer your question is, the better answers you will get. Once you know your question, write that down in the middle of the page.
Once you have your question written down, let yourself go. Don’t try and edit yourself. No matter how crazy, wild, or stupid something may seem at first, get it down onto your mind map. ____38____ Editing yourself at an early stage will not produce your best ideas.
After your initial brainstorm, giving yourself a few days will produce more ideas and expand others. A few days later, come back to your mind map and give yourself another hour or two with it. You will find you have a lot more ideas to add. Meanwhile, you may also see ideas that don’t work. ____39____ After this session, you will have a lot of ideas, answers, and steps.
The next stage is where you make small changes about these ideas and start to structure the next step. You now need to decide in what order you will move forward. Once you have all your ideas and points numbered, you can then move those to your to do list and place them in the right order. You may find that as you begin working on your project, you may change your order round.____40____
A. You can remove ideas later.
B. It doesn’t encourage you to go deeper with your ideas.
C. You can leave them just in case they bring more ideas later.
D. Your brain is likely to give you unrealistic or unclear answers.
E. Before you start, think about what kind of mind map you want.
F. But you will at least have a place to start by having an initial sequence.
G. It gives you a visual means to brainstorm your ideas and the foundations of a structure.

When Devon’s sister, Lil, went off to college, Devon’s stomach felt all twisty. Then Mom said that Kapil, a high-school student from India, would be staying in their house and living in Lil’s room, for they were the host family. The piece of news made Devon’s stomach feel worse, as he missed his sister so much. “What if I can’t understand him?” Devon asked. “He speaks English well,” Mom said.
On Kapil’s first day, he exchanged some small talk with Devon before disappearing into his new room. Lil’s room, Devon reminded himself. As days went on, Kapil started spending more time in the rest of the house. He was in the kitchen a lot, whose cooking always filled the air with steam and spice that made Devon’s eyes water. “Smells wonderful!” Mom exclaimed. When Lil called a few days later, Devon told her about Kapil’s cooking. “Lucky! I love Indian food!” Lil said. “But it seems too spicy forme,” replied Devon.
One day, Mom had to work late. “Kapil will stay with you until I get home,” she explained. Devon’s stomach twisted. Lil had always stayed with him when Mom had to work late.
When Devon got home from school, Kapil greeted him at the door. “Would you like a snack?” Kapil asked. Devon shrugged. Lil and he used to cook together after school, which they called “making messes.” Kapil opened the refrigerator. “How about a yogurt?” “I had one at breakfast,” responded Devon in a cold voice. Kapil opened a cupboard and smiled. “Wait here.” He returned with a package. “I’ll cook an Indian snack,” he announced. Kapil pulled out around, thin cracker the size of a small Frisbee, poured oil into a pan and fried the cracker. Then the kitchen was filled with spicy smells. After a while, Kapil handed Devon a plate with the sizzling pancake on it. “Papadum (印度薄饼),” he said. “Made from bean flour.”

M: What’s the point? We’ll be at the beach all day anyway.
W: Oh, come on! Don’t you want a bit of luxury for once?
M: But we definitely don’t need an entire house!

I’m really glad to see so many people signed up for this workshop. With graduation coming up soon, I know that many of you are preparing to enter the workforce for the first time. Job interviews can be an enormously stressful experience, but like most things, interviewing is a skill, not a talent, and a little practice goes a long way.
I know many of you feel nervous just at the thought of being interviewed, but you need to remember that you’ve been invited for an interview because your potential employers think you’d be suitable for the job. So, have a little confidence in yourself. The best thing you can do is be prepared and professional, which will help you make a strong first impression.
Before an interview, you should always review your résumé and application, which is why I asked you all to bring an outline of your achievements, academic or otherwise, up to now. You’ll be needing that later. Once your résumé is solid, then you can start preparing for possible interview questions. I’m going to hand out a list of those questions now. You need to think about how you’d answer each of them. Don’t bother making notes — you can’t bring notes to an interview. OK, that’s all, does anyone have any questions for me?

A 25. D 26. A 27.

30. What does Sarah Dalrymple urge people to do in the last paragraph?
A. Stop changing the climate.
B. Have more options to help species.
C. Help native trees to adapt to climate changes.
D. Take action earlier to prevent species’ extinction.
31. What might be the author’s attitude towards assisted migration?
A. Supportive. B. Cautious. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
C 29. B 30. D 31. C

由文章第二段中“By 2050, London’s weather could resemble that of Barcelona, with long stretches of summer drought. These ancient trees were not designed to thrive in such conditions. (到2050年,伦敦的天气可能会像巴塞罗那一样,夏季干旱会持续很长时间。这些古树本来就不适合在这样的条件下茁壮成长。)”可知,伦敦的古树面临的问题是极端天气。故选C。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第四段中“Conservationists have long argued against introducing non-native species. They have concerns about unintended consequences of assisted migration. “Large-scale moving of ecosystems can’t be undone (撤销), so should be very much a last choice,” said Andrew Allen from the Woodland Trust. (自然资源保护主义者长期以来一直反对引进非本地物种。他们担心辅助移民会带来意想不到的后果。林地信托基金会的安德鲁·艾伦说:“生态系统的大规模迁移无法逆转,因此应该是最后的选择。”)”可知,安德鲁·艾伦可能同意辅助迁移可能带来不良后果这一观点。故选B。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。由文章最后一段中“She wants to see assisted migration explored earlier, working with species before their populations become so small. “You can never get rid of all the risks, but there is also risk in inaction,” she said. “The risk of inaction is increasing every day.” (她希望能更早地探索辅助迁徙,在物种数量变得如此之小之前与它们一起工作。“你永远不可能消除所有的风险,但不作为也有风险,”她说。“不作为的风险每天都在增加。”)”可知,萨拉·达尔林普尔在最后一段中敦促人们尽早采取行动以防止物种灭绝。故选D。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“The oak tree has been in southern England continuously for 12,000 years. But does it have a future? (橡树在英格兰南部已经连续生长了12000年。但它有未来吗?)”和第四段中“The “assisted migration” is divisive. (“辅助移民”存在分歧。自然资源保护主义者长期以来一直反对引进非本地物种。他们担心辅助移民会带来意想不到后果。林地信托基金会的安德鲁·艾伦说:“生态系统的大规模迁移无法逆转,因此应该是最后的选择。”艾伦认为,我们应该通过鼓励自然再生、扩大和连接现有林地来优先帮助本地树木适应变化。)”、最后一段中“She wants to see assisted migration explored earlier, working with species before their populations become so small. “You can never get rid of all the risks, but there is also risk in inaction,” she said. “The risk of inaction is increasing every day.”
33. According to the research, the insects confirm their direction when flying .
A 33. D 34. C 35. D
根据第一段“Chances are that you’ve heard the phrase “like a moth (飞蛾) to a fire” — and probably seen it in action at a night time campfire or barbecue, too.(你可能听说过“飞蛾扑火”这个短语,也可能在晚上的篝火或烧烤中看到过它。)”和第二段“It turns out, however, this age-old saying may not be quite right. Rather than being attracted to light, moths’ tendency to fly toward brightness is a behavioral response to help them determine which way is up, suggests a new study published today in the journal Nature Communications.(然而,事实证明,这句古老的谚语可能并不完全正确。今天发表在Nature Communications杂志上的一项新研究表明,飞蛾倾向于飞向明亮的地方,而不是被光线吸引,这是一种行为反应,可以帮助它们确定哪条路是向上的。)”可知,新的研究表明,飞蛾并不是被光吸引,而是飞向亮处是一种行为反应,以帮助它们确定哪个方向是向上的。所以第一段的写作目的是为了引出该实验研究。故选A。
根据第三段“But they do have a system that allows them to really quickly tell what’s bright and what’s dark, and give them feedback about the sky so that they can fly stably(但它们确实有一个系统,可以让它们非常迅速地分辨出什么是亮的,什么是暗的,并给它们关于天空的反馈,这样它们就可以稳定地飞行。)”
根据划线词上文“This behavioral natural ability could(这种行为上的天生能力可能会)”以及后文“trouble for insects’ populations(为昆虫种群……麻烦)”可知,指这种天生的行为能力可能会给昆虫种群造成麻烦。故划线词意思是“造成”。故选C。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“It turns out, however, this age-old saying may not be quite right. Rather than being attracted to light, moths’ tendency to fly toward brightness is a behavioral response to help them determine which way is up, suggests a new study published today in the journal Nature Communications.(然而,事实证明,这句古老的谚语可能并不完全正确。

D Your brain is likely to give you unrealistic or unclear answers.

Before he knew it, he had finished the whole papadum.
Looking at the empty plate, Devon said to Kapil, “Let’s make messes!” Kapil’s face instantly lit up with a wide, beaming smile that reached his eyes. Their laughter filled the kitchen as they embarked on a culinary adventure together. They spent the remainder of the evening in a flurry of activity, sharing stories and tips, and creating a medley of new and exciting snacks. Devon realized that having Kapil around wasn’t so bad after all. In fact, it might just turn out to be a wonderful and enjoyable time with him while Lil was away.

I know that many of you are preparing to enter the workforce for the first time. Job interviews can be an enormously stressful experience, but like most things, interviewing is a skill, not a talent, and a little practice goes a long way. I know many of you feel nervous just at the thought of being interviewed, but you need to remember that you've been invited for an interview because your potential employers think you'd be suitable for the job, so have a little confidence in yourself. The best thing you can do is be prepared and professional, which will help you make a strong first impression. Before an interview, you should always review your resume and application, which is why I ask you all to bring an outline of your achievements, academic or otherwise. Up to now, you'll be needing that later. Once your resume is solid, then you can start preparing for possible interview questions. I'm going to hand out a list of those questions. Now you need to think about how you'd answer each of them. Don't bother making notes. You can't bring notes to an interview. Okay, that's all. Does anyone have any questions for me?
