Sewing is frequently seen as an enjoyable and artistic activity. However, have you ever taken a moment to consider that for countless individuals worldwide, a sewing machine goes beyond its role as merely a tool, instead frequently serving as their crucial source of income?
When Margaret Jankowski discovered this, she chose to establish The Sewing Machine Project, an organization dedicated to collecting donated sewing machines and distributing them in remote areas such as Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Guam, and Kosovo. Additionally, the organization seeks to assist communities in Detroit and New Orleans.
After a tsunami struck Sri Lanka, Margaret was profoundly affected by the tale of a specific woman. The disaster ruined the woman’s village, resulting in her losing everything, including her sewing machine, which had been her primary means of earning a living. Moved by this story, Margaret made the decision to gather used sewing machines and ship them to Sri Lanka. After she announced her idea on a local news program, donations of sewing machines began pouring in from the community.
The Sewing Machine Project covers a basic yet necessary need of many impoverished people around the world. For them, sewing can be a tool for survival. Whether in a factory or at home, a sewing machine can be the door to brighter financial opportunities. A sewing machine can also enable many to preserve their cultural identity. After Hurricane Katrina occurred in 2005, a community of New Orleans that wears skillfully-made suits for their own traditional festival lost many of their sewing machines. Since then, the non-profit organization has distributed hundreds of machines among the creators of the costumes, helping them maintain their tradition as well as their income.
4. What is the purpose of including a question in the first paragraph?
A. To question the importance of sewing.
B. To emphasize the role of sewing.
C To introduce the sewing project.
D. To provide background information about sewing.
5. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Inspiration for the project. B. The experience of Margaret in 2004.
C. The story of a woman in Sri Lanka. D. Destruction of the 2004 tsunami.
6. What does the underlined word “impoverished” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. uneducated. B. badly-off. C. exhausted. D. pessimistic.
7. Why is the community in New Orleans mentioned in the end?
A. To highlight its cultural identity.
B. To prove the importance of keeping traditions.
C. To explain how organizations can provide immediate disaster relief.
D. To show another function of sewing machines.
C 5. A 6. B 7. D
根据第一段“Sewing is frequently seen as an enjoyable and artistic activity. However, have you ever taken a moment to consider that for countless individuals worldwide, a sewing machine goes beyond its role as merely a tool, instead frequently serving as their crucial source of income? (缝纫经常被视为一种令人愉快的艺术活动。然而,你有没有想过,对于世界上无数的人来说,缝纫机不仅仅是一种工具,而是他们重要的收入来源?)”和第二段中“When Margaret Jankowski discovered this, she chose to establish The Sewing Machine Project, an organization dedicated to collecting donated sewing machines and distributing them in remote areas such as Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Guam, and Kosovo. Additionally, the organization seeks to assist communities in Detroit and New Orleans. (当玛格丽特·扬科夫斯基发现这一点时,她决定建立“缝纫机项目”,一个致力于收集捐赠缝纫机并将其分发到斯里兰卡、危地马拉、关岛和科索沃等偏远地区的组织。此外,该组织还寻求帮助底特律和新奥尔良的社区。)”可知,设问是为了引出缝纫机项目的内容,解释其重要性。故选C。
【5题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“After a tsunami struck Sri Lanka, Margaret was profoundly affected by the tale of a specific woman. 故选A。
根据第四段中“The Sewing Machine Project covers a basic yet necessary need of many impoverished people around the world. (缝纫机项目满足了世界各地许多impoverished人的基本需求。)”和“For them, sewing can be a tool for survival. Whether in a factory or at home, a sewing machine can be the door to brighter financial opportunities. (对他们来说,缝纫是一种生存的工具。无论是在工厂还是在家里,一台缝纫机都可以是通往更光明的财务机会的大门。)”可知,缝纫机是他们的生存工具,是通往更光明的财务机会的大门,由此可知句中的“them”是穷人,them指代impoverrished people。因此,impoverished意为“贫困的”。A. uneducated没受过教育的;B. badly-off穷的,生活拮据的;C. exhausted精疲力尽的;D. pessimistic悲观的。
根据最后一段的“A sewing machine can also enable many to preserve their cultural identity.
C

Twice a year for the last 29 years, scientists have walked through the same sections of tallgrass prairie (大草原) in Kansas and recorded as many species as they could find. The goal was to determine the impact of American bison (野牛) on the ecosystem. Tallgrass prairies used to cover a huge part of Texas. Today this habitat is at risk of disappearing, present in just four percent of its former range.
Now, decades of efforts and data show a surprising result: When bison were allowed to seek food through prairie, they increased plant species richness by 86 percent. “The big effect bison had knocked us out, ”says Zak Ratajczak, an ecologist at Kansas State University. “I don’t think anyone would have prognosticated this ahead of time. ”252 earlier similar studies worldwide showed bison’s effects were relatively slight.
As for reasons, Ratajczak has some theories. Bison tend to choose one area, eating everything up there, while leaving another area of the prairie untouched. They also go around forming disturbances in the soil, forming holes. These are areas where they roll around and shake off their winter coats, and that creates little spots of unique types of soil features. The spots harden and collect water after rain, for example, creating wetlands, which allow more plants to grow. By promoting different types of plant growth, scientists believe bison could help their ecosystems become more adaptable to droughts.
Millions of bison lived in the US in the mid 1800s, before the government killed the population, reducing their numbers to a few hundred by 1889. The findings suggest ongoing efforts to reintroduce bison could have enormous and long-term benefits. “That is a relationship that was cut off,” says Jason Baldes, a member of the Eastern Shoshone Tribe. “As we restore this connection, it favors bison. And bison, by their presence, boost our land.”
12. What was the purpose of scientists walking through the same sections of tall grass prairie in Kansas?
A. To seek greater biodiversity.
B. To record many species as they could find.
C. To research the reason why this habitat is at risk.
D. To identify the influence of bison on the ecosystem.
13. What does the underlined word “prognosticated” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Considered. B. Accepted. C. Predicted. D. Ignored.
14 How do bison promote plant species richness?
A. By keeping away from prairies. B. By changing soil characteristics.
C. By providing food and habits. D. By helping plants survive droughts.
15. What does Baldes think of the reintroduction of bison?
A. It is a win-win situation. B. It should be done long ago.
C. It has a long-lasting benefit. D. It requires efforts from many sides.
D 13. C 14. B 15. A
根据第一段中“Twice a year for the last 29 years, scientists have walked through the same sections of tallgrass prairie (大草原) in Kansas and recorded as many species as they could find. The goal was to determine the impact of American bison (野牛) on the ecosystem.( 在过去29年里,科学家们每年两次走过堪萨斯州高草草原的相同区域,并记录下尽可能多的物种。目的是确定美洲野牛对生态系统的影响。)”可推知,科学家们在堪萨斯州的高草草原上行走的目的是确定野牛对生态系统的影响。故选D项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“The big effect bison had knocked us out.(野牛的巨大影响让我们震惊。)”
根据第三段中“They also go around forming disturbances in the soil, forming holes. These are areas where they roll around and shake off their winter coats, and that creates little spots of unique types of soil features. The spots harden and collect water after rain, for example, creating wetlands, which allow more plants to grow.( 它们还会四处走动,在土壤中扰动,形成孔洞。它们在这些地方打滚,甩掉它们的冬衣,这就形成了独特的土壤特征。例如,雨后这些地点变硬并收集水分,形成湿地,使更多的植物得以生长。)”可知,野牛通过改变土壤特征来促进植物物种丰富度。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“As we restore this connection, it favors bison. And bison, by their presence, boost our land.( 当我们恢复这种联系时,它有利于野牛。而野牛的存在,使我们的土地繁荣起来。)”可知,Baldes认为,当我们恢复与野牛的联系时,这对野牛有利,而野牛的存在也改善了我们的土地。由此可推知,重新引进野牛是一件双赢的事情。故选A项。

Walking on the street, the bitter cold of a December day in Washington, D. C. was ruining my mood. The temperature was below zero so I ducked into the subway station, hoping to get warm.
Warmth came to my body as I settled onto a bench with a cup of hot coffee. Now I was ready to relax and do some serious people-watching. I noticed a homeless man seated nearby. The pleasant smell of delicious food from the subway food court (餐饮区) was tempting me to consider an early dinner. From the longing look in my neighbor’s eyes it was obvious that he, too, noticed the good smell. I wondered how long it had been since he had eaten anything, expecting he would approach me for a handout (施舍). But he never did. My head and heart were battling it out: the former telling me to mind my own business, and the latter urging me to make an immediate trip to the food court for him.
While this inner debate was fierce, a well-dressed young couple suddenly approached. “Excuse me, sir,” began the husband. “We just finished eating and our appetite wasn’t as big as we thought. We hate to waste food. Can you help us out and put this to good use?” The kind stranger handed a large container with food. “Thank you.” came the grateful reply. Feeling good about what I had seen, but disappointed by my own lack of action, I observed my neighbor’s response to his sudden good fortune.
He lifted the soup, cupping his hands around the steaming bowl. It was obvious that he was going to enjoy this miracle meal. He opened his mouth and suddenly, he stopped.
The reason for this unexpected behavior soon became clear. Entering the hall was a new arrival, in his seventies, hatless and gloveless. His lightweight jacket was a poor protection against cold. His face and hands were red and damaged. People around focused on him with pity and whispered at this sad sight.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
My neighbor was the only one to take action.

Tears blurred my vision when I went to buy food at the food court.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
My neighbor was the only one to take action. He stood up, walked over to the newcomer, and gently offered him the steaming bowl of soup. The old man’s eyes lit up with surprise and gratitude as he accepted the unexpected kindness. My neighbor then returned to his seat, satisfied with his decision to share his meal. The atmosphere in the subway station seemed to warm up a little, as if the kindness had spread like a ripple in a pond. People around started to smile, and the tension in the air disappeared. I felt a sense of admiration for my neighbor, who had chosen compassion over indifference.
Tears blurred my vision when I went to buy food at the food court. I realized that true generosity often comes from those who have the least to give. My neighbor, despite his own hardships, had shown a level of kindness and selflessness. I decided to follow his example and bought a few extra meals, handing them out to the needy around me. As I walked away, I felt a sense of fulfillment and warmth. The experience reminded me that even in the coldest of days, a simple act of kindness can light up someone’s world and bring warmth to the coldest heart.

A. uneducated. B. badly-off. C. exhausted. D. pessimistic.

B. To prove the importance of keeping traditions.
C. To explain how organizations can provide immediate disaster relief.

More than 80 percent of China’s public transport buses are new energy vehicles, the Ministry of Transport said on Tuesday.
There were 682,500 public buses on the country’s roads by the end of last year, with554,400 of them — 81.2 percent — eschewing (避开) fossil- fuel engines. The country’s public bus network has expanded to 79,800 routes, with over 20,000 kilometers of dedicated bus lanes. Last year, China’s buses provided 41.6 billion passenger trips, according to Geng Jinjun, an official from the ministry. He said the ministry and related departments have accelerated improvements to regulations, policies and standards in recent years to further the development of urban public transportation.
“Urban public transport is experiencing a new stage of policy opportunities,” Geng said, adding that the ministry is drafting policies to promote its development, as well as detailed rules for the renewal of buses and their batteries.
He said it is important to improve transportation network plans, enhance the integration (整合) of various urban transportation modes, and innovate services tailored to local needs, such as public transport to work, schools and hospitals. The ministry also aims to improve barrier — free services for the elderly.
In Cangzhou, Hebei province, the quality of public transportation, especially public bus services, has improved in recent years, according to Wang Tianyong, deputy director of the transportation bureau. “The province has continuously updated the facilities and equipment, and improved the quality of travel,” he said.
Cangzhou launched a free“medical express bus” to help patients travel to hospital in June last year. The service runs every 30 minutes. Staff are available on board to help passengers complete medical registration through their mobile phones to save time at the hospital. To benefit patients living outside Cangzhou, a large parking lot has been set up at the entrance of a freeway in the city. Patients can park their cars there and ride the free bus to the hospital.
8. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. About 81% of the vehicles are powered by new energy.
B. Some bus lanes are in bad condition.
C. Urban public transport has more regulations.
D. China’s public transport has improved a lot.
9. What can we do to improve public transport according to Geng?
A. Put forward more strict rules. B. Provide service needed by the locals.
C. Build new roads to different places. D. Help the elderly to drive freely.
10. What can be inferred from Cangzhou’s practice?
A. Travel becomes faster than before. B. Citizens can take free public buses.
C. Patients’ registration is more flexible. D. New vehicles appear in the suburbs.
11. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. New energy vehicles in China. B. The turning point of public transport.
C. Good service provided by public transport. D. Developments in China’s public transport.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
My neighbor was the only one to take action.
