Some people ski down mountains. Others climb huge rocks or photograph dangerous animals. Why do people enjoy risky activities like these?
Some people take risks simply because it makes them feel good. Psychologist (心理学家) Marvin says that this kind of explorer (探险者) is always looking for change and excitement. When people do something new or risky, a chemical (化学物质) in the brain creates a pleasant feeling. They love this feeling and want to experience it as often as possible.
Other people don’t take risks for the feeling of excitement but to achieve a goal. For example, Mike Fay went on a dangerous 2,000-mile special journey in central Africa. He worked to help save the wildlife there. Fay’s expeditions helped create 13 national parks.
For other people, such as extreme athletes (极限运动员), taking risks is part of their job. Sports psychologist Shane says extreme athletes see the world differently. In a dangerous activity, most people probably do not feel in control. Extreme athletes are different: they feel in control in dangerous situations. The danger can even help them. For example, skier Daron Rahlves says that being afraid makes him try harder to succeed.
Most of us are not extreme athletes or explorers. However, we still take risks in our lives. Some of us take social risks, such as speaking in front of a large group of people. Sometimes, we take financial risks, such as buying a house. And sometimes we take career risks, such as leaving a job or starting a business. Most people take risks in some areas of life, but not in others. What kind of risk-taker are you?
52. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The brain. B. Something new.
C. A chemical. D. A pleasant feeling.
53. What does the underlined word “expeditions” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Much money.
B. A journey with a special goal.
C. A great idea.
D. A plan for a dangerous journey.
54. How many kinds of extreme athletes or explorers are mentioned in the passage?
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
55. What can we infer (推断) according to the passage?
A. Mike Fay is a professional risk-taker.
B. Most people don’t take risks in their daily life.
C. Extreme athletes deal with danger better than others.
D. Daron Rahlves takes risks mainly for change and excitement.
D
Chen Lin is a doctor who is from Hengyang. After his graduation from Peking University, he works in an office for a large organization. And this job can sometimes be just as exciting and dangerous as being an explorer.
Chen Lin works for MSF, an organization also known as Doctors Without Borders (无国界医生). MSF sends trained doctors all over the world to help people after a war or a disaster (灾难). Chen Lin has travelled to many places to organize programs that help people in need.
At present, there are about 27,000 trained medical staff taking part in MSF projects and tasks. The organization received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. All kinds of doctors can volunteer for MSF. They need to be prepared to go almost anywhere in the world and, of course, they should expect difficult conditions. Doctors with experience in tropical (热带的) diseases are especially useful because most of MSF’s work is in Africa. When MSF accepts a doctor for a task, he has to go for at least six months. When doctors have completed a few tasks, they might be sent on an emergency task following a disaster, such as an earthquake.
But why would a doctor leave a comfortable life and a good salary to join MSF? According to Chen Lin, the experience you have is a great help in your career. Besides, just like the explorers of the past, you need to keep an open mind and learn to get along well with the people you meet. Most importantly, at the end of each task, you have made a real difference to people’s lives.
56. According to the first paragraph, which is NOT true about Chen Lin?
A. Sometimes, Chen Lin’s job may be dangerous.
B. Chen Lin comes from Guiyang.
C. He graduated from Peking University.
D. He works for a large organization.

58. Who are greatly needed in Africa according to the passage?
A. Doctors who have experience in tropical diseases.
B. Doctors who are kind and patient.
C. Doctors from all over the world.
D. Doctors who graduated from famous universities.
59. What does a doctor have to do if he is accepted for a task by MSF?
A. He has to complete a few tasks.
B. He has to go for at least six months.

Have you ever heard of e-waste (electronic waste, 电子垃圾), which can be produced every day? How do you deal with your computers, MP4 players and mobile phones when they’re broken or you want a new one? Most people just throw them away. With the development of electronic industry, e-waste pollution has become a serious problem. According to the United Nations, in 2014, people around the world produced 41.8 million tons of e-waste and only recycled 6.5 million tons. The U.S. was the biggest waster, producing 7.1 million tons. China came second, with 6 million tons.
Whether e-waste can be valuable or harmful depends on how we deal with it. People should pay much more attention to e-waste. E-waste is a valuable urban mine (城市矿藏). The value of the metals, like gold and silver in the waste around the world, is amazing. And the metals can be reused. But if people throw them away, the toxic (有毒的) chemicals can get into the earth or air, affecting the environment and people’s health.
What can we do if we don’t throw the e-waste away? We can recycle it. Now some companies have set up their recycling programs. First, they recycle the used products from those who buy new ones from their companies. Then they test and repair the used ones and sell them at lower prices. To help reduce e-waste, we can get computers and phones from those recycling programs.

First, you are going to have no-rubbish lunch. As an environment club member, you need to bring your lunches in bags that can be used again. Every week you will choose the classes that make the least rubbish and report them to the whole school.
Next, you will tell your classmates that every Monday is a no-car day. On the no-car day, nobody comes to school in a car — neither the students nor the teachers! Use your legs! There will be lots of fun.
Finally, save water! Broken toilets can waste a lot of water. We can start by doing something about our broken toilets.

【答案】52. D 53. B 54. A 55. C

四、任务型阅读(共5小题,计10分)
阅读下面短文,按要求完成66—70题。
