On Saturday, August 24, 1918, it was raining cats and dogs and thundering over a city called Sunderland on the northeast coast of England. The storm lasted for only about ten minutes. People were surprised to see that it was not just rainwater falling from the sky. There were fish falling down, too! People came out to find out what was happening. They could not believe their own eyes. There were thousands of fish—sand eels (沙鳗)—lying on the ground. They were about seven centimeters long, and all were frozen dead.
Sand eels swim together in large groups, often in sandy water, and are often found in large numbers in the North Sea, which reaches out to the east of Sunderland. How was it possible for these sand eels to fall from the sky and land on Sunderland?
Scientists believed the heavy thunderstorm that afternoon may have caused a waterspout (水龙卷) Waterspout s can be formed when strong winds move quickly in a circle over water. They are so powerful that anything less than one meter in length can be taken into them and forced into the clouds. The clouds carry whatever has been taken into them for long distances —sometimes over 150 kilometers. It’s very cold up there and everything soon freezes.
For hundreds of years there have been reports of small animals being taken into the sky through waterspouts. In 2009, dead tadpoles rained down on the city of Nanao in Japan. In 2012, fifty kilos of prawns fell from the sky over Sri Lanka. In 2017, fish fell on the coastal city of Tampico in Mexico.
It must be a very strange experience to see fish raining down on you. It would probably hurt if one fell on your head! With climate change and many reports of terrible storms, will the time ever come when it may really begin to rain cats and dogs?
8. What do we know about the sand eels that landed on Sunderland?
A. They were few in number. B. They came in different sizes.
C. They were still alive when landing. D. They probably came from the North Sea.
9. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Clouds. B. Waterspouts. C. Sand eels. D. Thunderstorms.
10. Why does the author mention the fall of tadpoles in Japan?
A. To stress the environment is not pleasant in Japan.
B. To introduce waterspouts can reach as far as Japan.
C. To show that raining sea animals is not new in history.
D. To explain different animals can fall in different countries.
11. What is the author really worried about in the last paragraph?
A. Health. B. Environment. C. Wild animals. D. Travel safety.
D
Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps an older person company and helps them remember to take their medicine. That is the shared dream of the toy maker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The researchers received a $3-million-dollar award from the National Science Foundation for a special project. They want to find ways to add artificial intelligence or AI, to Hasbro’s “Joy for All” robotic cat.
The cat has already been for sale for two years. Though priced at over 1,000 dollars, it sold quite well. It was meant to act as a “companion” (陪伴) for older people. Now the project is aimed at developing additional abilities for the cat. Researchers are working to decide which activities older adults may need the most. They hope to make the cat perform a small number of activities very well. Such activities include finding lost objects and reminding the older people to take medicine or visit their doctor. They also want to keep the cost down to just a few hundred dollars.
It is an idea that is attractive to Jeanne Elliott. Her 93-year-old mother Mary Derr lives with her in South Kingstown. Derr has dementia (痴呆). The Joy for All cat that Elliot bought this year has become a true companion for Derr. The cat stays with Derr and keeps her relaxed while Elliett is at work. Elliot said a robotic cat that helps her mother to remember to take her medicine and be careful when she walks would be greater.
The researchers are dying to learn how the improved cats will complete helpful activities and how they will communicate. They say that they do not want a talking cat, however. Instead they are trying to design a cat that can move its head in a special way to successfully communicate its message. In the end, they hope to create an exchange between the human and the cat in which the human feels the cat needs them. By doing so, the researchers hope they can even help prevent feelings of loneliness and sadness among elderly people.
12. What’s the purpose of the project?
A. To reduce the pain of the elderly. B. To invent a robotic cat for the elderly.
C. To increase the sales of a medicine. D. To help make the robotic cat smarter.
13. What can we know about the cat?
A. It will be on sale in two years.
B. It may be cheaper in the future.
C. Its abilities will be made simpler for the elderly.
D. It can tell the activities older adults need the most.
14. What does the example in Paragraph 3 show?
A. The cat gives much help to the elderly. B. The cat can satisfy most patients’ need.
C. The cat works well to talk with the patient. D. The cat can make the dementia patient happy.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Updating AI: The Future of Robotics
B. Improving Companionship: The Joy for All Project
C. Affordable Technology: Bringing AI to Every Home
D. Silent Communication: The Language of Robotic Cats

I’m not going to say storms are good, because I know what they’ve stolen from people. But my story is of a storm that gave me more than I’d thought to ask for.
The tornado(龙卷风)blew through on a Sunday. We were visiting grandparents in Raleigh then, unaware that seventy miles away the big tree in our front yard was tearing through our roof and destroying the kitchen.
When we returned, we saw Rosica’s father and brothers in our yard, gathering debris(碎片)and using a chain saw to cut the thickest branches of the fallen tree, though we barely knew them then. They were covered in sweat and dirt.
My mom didn’t seem to notice how happy they were to help us because the first thing she said was “Oh, you don’t need to be doing all that work!” Mr. Flores laughed.“Claro! Of course, we don’t. But more importantly, you cannot sleep in that house tonight. Come and speak to my wife. She’ll help you figure out what to do.” My mom doesn’t usually let people tell her what to do, but she sighed(叹气)deeply as she took in the sight of our home in the failing light, reached for my hand, and followed our neighbor to their house.
The Flores family lived across the street. Their home was the same size as ours but housed three generations. Rosica was my age. I knew her name and face, but since she was new to our school, and had a different teacher than I did, we had never spoken. It was she who answered the door.“Mama is changing the sheets on the bed for you, and there’s some lemon cheesecake on the table.”
“Please don’t trouble yourself. I think I’d call a hotel and see about a room,” my mom said, more uneasy than usual. Mrs. Flores came down the stairs and smiled at us warmly, “Y our room is ready. I know it’s more encouraged to give than receive, but allow yourself to receive a place to stay, and allow us the chance to give you something you need!”
注意:
Paragraph 1:
Our two-week stay at Flores’s home started.

Paragraph 2:
Following our stay in their home, a beautiful tradition began.

Scientists believed the heavy thunderstorm that afternoon may have caused a waterspout (水龙卷). Waterspout s can be formed when strong winds move quickly in a circle over water.
D 9. B 10. C 11. B
根据第二段中“Sand eels swim together in large groups, often in sandy water, and are often found in large numbers in the North Sea, which reaches out to the east of Sunderland. (沙鳗成群结队地游动,经常在含沙的水中,在桑德兰东部的北海经常发现大量的沙鳗。)”可知,在桑德兰东部的北海经常发现大量的沙鳗,由此可知,那些出现在桑德兰市的沙鳗最可能来自与该市东部相连的北海。故选D项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Scientists believed the heavy thunderstorm that afternoon may have caused a waterspout (水龙卷). Waterspouts can be formed when strong winds move quickly in a circle over water. (科学家认为,当天下午的强雷暴可能导致了水龙卷。当强风在水面上快速旋转时,就会形成水龙卷。)”可知,此处讲述了水龙卷形成的原因,结合划线词所在句“They are so powerful that anything less than one meter in length can be taken into…and forced into the clouds. (它们是如此强大,以至于任何不到一米长的东西都可以被吸进……,并被强行进入云层。)”可知,此处的they应指的是上文中的提到的名词复数“Waterspouts”,结合语境可知,水龙卷的威力很大,沙鳗很可能被吸进水龙卷里,并被卷进云层,由此可知,划线词 them与其所在句中的They都指代waterspouts (水龙卷)。故选 B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“For hundreds of years there have been reports of small animals being taken into the sky through waterspouts. (数百年来,一直有关于小动物通过水龙卷被带向天空的报道。)”可知,数百年来有很多关于水龙卷把小动物带向天空的报道,此应为本段的主题句,结合下文中的“In 2009, dead tadpoles rained down on the city of Nanao in Japan. (2009年,死蝌蚪如雨点般落在日本南尾市。)”可知,此处列举了发生在2009年发生在日本南尾市死蝌蚪从天而降的事件,由此可知,此处讲述了历史上有很多类似于前文提到的下雨带来动物的报道,说明这在历史上并不新鲜。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据尾段中的“It would probably hurt if one fell on your head! With climate (气候) change and many reports of terrible storms, will the time ever come when it may really begin to rain cats and dogs?(如果有一颗落在你头上,可能会很疼!随着气候的变化和许多可怕风暴的报道,真的会有大雨倾盆的时候吗?)”可知,此处作者运用“terrible”来说明风暴是可怕的,而这样的报道逐渐增多,并且使用疑问的形式来表达自己对天气变化的担忧,由此可知,此处表达了作者对目前环境的担忧。故选B项。

D 13. B 14. A 15. B

They hope to make the cat perform a small number of activities very well. Such activities include finding lost objects and reminding the older people to take medicine or visit their doctor.
根据第二段中“They also want to keep the cost down to just a few hundred dollars. (他们还想把成本降低到几百美元)”可知,研究人员在努力降低机器猫的成本。由此可知,它将来可能会更便宜。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Derr has dementia (痴呆). The Joy for All cat that Elliot bought this year has become a true companion for Derr. The cat stays with Derr and keeps her relaxed while Elliett is at work. (Derr患有痴呆症。Elliot今年买的Joy for All猫已经成为Derr的真正伴侣。这只猫和Derr呆在一起,在Elliot工作的时候让她保持放松)”可推知,这里的例子表明机器猫给了老人很多帮助。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps an older person company and helps them remember to take their medicine. (想象一下,一只猫在陪伴老人并帮助他们记住吃药后,不需要有人来打扫卫生)”和“They want to find ways to add artificial intelligence or AI, to Hasbro’s “Joy for All” robotic cat. (他们希望找到将人工智能或AI添加到Hasbro的Joy for All机器猫的方法)”可知,文章主要介绍了一个项目希望改进Joy for All机器猫,使其成为老年人更好的伴侣,帮助他们进行日常活动。因此,B项“改善陪伴:Joy for All项目”契合文章主旨,适合作为文章标题。故选B项。

How to Keep Building Your Vocabulary
No educative process is ever the end. It is always the beginning of more education and more learning. ___16___ The following are the ways that can help to keep your vocabulary growing and growing.
Read more. As an adult, you will find most of the sources of your supply of new words in books and magazines. If your aim is to have a superior vocabulary, you will have to make the time to read at least one book and several magazines every week. Not just this week and next week — but every week. ___17___
Guess the meaning of a new word in the context (语境). When you meet with an unfamiliar word, do not skip over it impatiently. ___18___ Then work out its possible meaning in the context of the sentence. Whether you come to the right conclusion or not will make a difference because you are, in this process, becoming more clearly aware of the word. As a result, you will, suddenly notice that this very word pops up unexpectedly again and again in all your reading. And of course after you’ve seen it a few times, you will know fairly well not only what it means but the many ways it can be used.
___19___ Think of the areas that may possibly be unknown to you — psychology, science, art, music or whatever. Then explore them by reading books in the fields. In every field, there are books written for average, untrained readers that will give you both a good knowledge and at the same time add dramatically to your vocabulary.
Set yourself a goal. If you do nothing about your vocabulary, you will learn, at most, twenty-five to fifty words in a year. ___20___ This may sound ambitious (雄心勃勃的) — but you will discover vocabulary snowball as soon as you start actively looking for new words.
A. Get prepared in advance.
B. Open you mind to new fields.
C. And so it is with vocabulary building.
D. You must be willing to learn new words.
E. I have never seen a single person with a rich vocabulary who is not a book addict.
F. Instead, stop for a moment and read it aloud to get used to its sound and appearance.
G. However, with a clear goal, you can learn several thousand in the same period of time.

故填was built。

One possible version:
Regular Exercise, Healthy Life
Nowadays, many students are lacking in regular exercise. They are so immersed in their academic studies that they have little time for exercise.
Regular exercise plays a vital role in our lives. Physically, it helps build up our strength, enhance our immunity, and improve our physical coordination and flexibility. Mentally, it is an excellent way to relieve stress and anxiety. After a tiring study session, a short jog or a game of badminton can make us feel relaxed and refreshed.
Therefore, I advocate that students should spare more time for exercise. We can choose the sport we like, such as running or playing basketball. Let’s embrace a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise.

注意:

Paragraph 2:
Following our stay in their home, a beautiful tradition began.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Our two-week stay at Flores’s home started. In the beginning, my mom was very uneasy and thought that living here could be a trouble for the family. She would help them with the housework as much as possible. The family were very friendly to us. They always said to us that, “Be at home!” They not only prepared everything we needed for us, but also cooked us delicious food, trying their best to make us feel at home. Gradually, we became familiar with each other just like a family. With Thanksgiving Day coming, our house was still under repair, which meant that we had to celebrate the festival with the family.
Following our stay in their home, a beautiful tradition began. On Thanksgiving Day, we together made a big dinner. My mom roasted the turkey which was popular with everyone. During the dinner, my mom extended her thanks to the family. “Thank you! I really don’t know what to say, but really thank you!” “Friends need no thanks!” said Mrs. Flores. We all laughed and enjoyed the dinner with joy and gratitude.
