In 1925, a deadly epidemic (流行病) struck the small town of Nome, Alaska. The total population of the town was only around 1,400 — seven of whom were dead and 19 of whom were sick. To make matters worse, the nearest source of a cure was hundreds of miles away, across the dangerous Alaskan wilderness.
Then, a Siberian husky (a kind of dog) named Balto saved the day. Balto was just one of 150 sled (雪橇) dogs used to deliver medicine to the town through whiteout snow and dangerous ice. And although Balto had never stood out from the rest of the pack (狗群) before, he proved to be surprisingly skillful and tough in the last leg of the journey.
Now known as the Nome Serum (血清) Run of 1925, the race began on January 27, 1925, when 300,000 doses of antitoxin (抗毒素) arrived in Nenana by train from Anchorage. The medicine was placed inside a metallic container, and then taken out into the Alaskan wilds by the first sled driver, “Wild Bill” Shannon, who arrived at the first handoff site with injuries caused by the extreme coldness and two of his dogs lost. Eventually, the medicine made its way to Leonhard Seppala, who set out confidently with his 12-year-old sled dog, Togo, leading the pack.
Togo led Seppala’ s pack until they reached the next sled driver, Charlie Olson, who then passed it down to Gunnar Kaasen. But Togo no longer led the pack. Instead, Kaasen completed the last leg of the journey with Balto as his frontrunner. Although Kaasen couldn’t even see in the whiteout conditions, and temperatures dropped to around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, Balto pressed on, successfully leading the pack to Nome, with the serum, on February 2.
Finally able to rest for the first time since the journey began , Kaasen looked to Balto and said, “What a fine dog!” And with that, Balto became a national hero who remains beloved nearly a century later.
4. What’s the function of paragraph 1?
A. To provide background information. B. To inspire the readers’ imagination.
C. To introduce a terrible disease. D. To support an argument.
5. What can be learned about the Nome Serum Run of 1925?
A. Its exact starting point was in Nome. B. It suffered the loss of a sled driver.
C. Its aim was to save the 19 sick people. D. It was completed through teamwork.
6. What did Togo do during the journey?
A. He saved the serum from being broken. B. He protected other dogs on the way.
C. He served as the guide of Kaasen. D. He led the group for some time.
7. What may be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Qualities of a Great Sled Dog
B. The Origins of the Alaskan Husky
C. Balto — The Hero of the Nome Serum Run
D. Nome — The Town That Survived an Epidemic
C
For more than 15 years, I’ve traveled to different parts of the world, where I take out rotten meat and wait for flies to appear. My research is related to understanding how an environment influences a fly’s ability to search for and find its food source, its single purpose of living. For example, flies rely on wind to carry scents across varying environments.
Warmer temperatures promote fly activity because they’re poikilothermic — meaning cold-blooded — and need heat to warm up their muscles for flight. Flies use visual cues (视觉信号) to fly through the air and to avoid barriers, so they’re more active during the daytime.
Blow flies can travel up to 28 miles for food. Most of the time when I set a piece of bad-smelling rotten meat, a large group of flies will come right away. But other times I’m surprised when no flies come to enjoy the big meal I’ve prepared.
When a female fly smells something that might be a good food source for her babies, she lands on it and assesses whether there’s enough to support her 400 or so eggs, which means life and death for her babies. A mom fly’s ability to smell out a good “home” for her babies is the key to the survival of the species and ultimately why this sense is so strong.
Male flies are less interested in these smells as a sign of food. But since they can signal where to find female flies for mating, males will still respond to the scent of a steaming trash can.
Flies have evolved (进化) to be superior trash-smellers because this superpower helps them survive. The reason why they manage to find trash cans wherever they exist is the same reason why they’ll show up to your picnic to check what’s on the menu — they’re looking for food that will help them create the next generation of flies.
8. What may be the reason why no flies come to the author’s “big meal”?
A. There’s no wind blowing. B. The flies are not hungry.
C. The “big meal” is not smelly enough. D. The distance is out of the flies’ reach.
9. When do flies tend to be most active?
A. On warm nights. B. In the daytime of cold days.
C. On rainy nights. D. In the daytime of warm days.
10. What is the decisive factor for the female flies to choose the egg-laying site?
A. The amount of food. B. The availability of shelter and protection.
C. The temperature of the environment. D. The presence of other female flies around.
11. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Male flies hardly respond to the trash can.
B. Picnic attracts female flies more than male ones.
C. Both male and female flies are sensitive to food smells.
D. Female flies are usually the first to show up at a picnic site.
D
Drone (无人机) light shows are becoming especially popular in the West. By now, if you live on the U. S. East or West Coasts, you’ve probably been troubled by wildfire smoke. The fires are increasing in frequency and intensity as climate change worsens. And fireworks, as you can guess from their name, cause fires — more than you might think.
That’s what caused a handful of California towns to quit fireworks and turn to drones last year. Sydney, Australia, known for its massive fireworks display, is considering doing the same due to the risk of wildfires. And fire danger is now top of mind for many U. S. cities as the Independence Day, or the American national day, nears.
In addition to reducing the risk of fires, drone light shows present a safer alternative for the folks behind the curtain. Fireworks injured more than 10,000 people last year because they can accidentally erupt while on the ground. Drones won’t. And since light shows are required to keep the ground below the show clear, there’s no risk of a drone falling from the sky into the crowd.
Drones are also less disturbing, creating only a light buzzing noise. Fireworks, on the other hand, can burst your eardrum if you’re standing close enough. That’s a nuisance for some families with animals, small children, or other people who are sensitive to noise.
But perhaps the biggest reason for the switch to drones is that they’re thought to be greener. Besides starting fires, firework smoke leaves behind a trail of harmful chemicals and is considered a pollutant. Drones are also a reusable option, capable of flying potentially hundreds of shows before they even require maintenance. That’s a huge benefit to the environment — and to the companies paying to put on these performances.
At the end of the day, though, some cities are likely switching to drones simply because they’re cooler. That’s not to say that fireworks aren’t cool. But drones allow for more creativity, with the ability to synchronize (同步) lights to music and recreate complex images in the sky.
Nevertheless, it’s still too early to rush to the conclusion that drones will completely take the place of fireworks in the near future.
12. Why are fireworks given up in some towns?
A. They are too expensive. B. They bring along fire risks.
C. They speed up climate change. D. They are not cool any more.
13. How does the author develop paragraph 3?
A. By making a comparison. B. By analyzing causes and effects.
C. By giving a definition. D. By referring to data from previous studies.
14. What does the underlined word “nuisance” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A Reward. B. Attraction. C. Instance. D. Annoyance.
15. What will the author probably continue to talk about?
A. The potential challenges drones will face.
B. The similarities shared by drones and fireworks.
C. The importance of drones in promoting economy.
D. The strong competition from companies in different industries.

School is one of the most memorable experiences of our life. It’s a moment when we meet new families called “classmates”. At first, they are strangers, then classmates, then friends, then best friends, and so on.
I study at Ovom Girls High School in Aba City. My years in Ovom Girls are priceless because it’s the place where I grew up and where my youthful life began. I found the Beautiful With Brain — my group of friends, and that’s the name we are known for. In this group, we experience a lot of things together; we study together and sit together. We have good connections with each other, even with our occasional lapses (失误).
The most memorable moment in school was in my last year, when an examination was to be conducted for all graduating students. This exam was not just another test; it was a chance to be recognized (认可) among the best, with the top three performers from each class earning special awards. Our class teacher then announced that only those who had performed well in previous exams would have the opportunity to participate.
As the days passed, anticipation (期待) built. When the list of examinees was finally announced, I, together with my group of friends, was extremely excited to find all our names on the list. To celebrate it, we decided to have a small gathering right after school. We rushed to the school cafeteria, bought our favorite snacks and drinks, found a corner and sat together, chatting about the upcoming examination. We shared our hopes and fears, and my friends offered me words of encouragement and support. They reminded me of all the times when we had studied together and how much I had improved over the years. We laughed and joked, trying to ease (缓解) the tension that was building up.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
The next day, we worked out a study schedule for the exam.

A 5. D 6. D 7. C

根据第一段“In 1925, a deadly epidemic (流行病) struck the small town of Nome, Alaska. The total population of the town was only around 1,400 — seven of whom were dead and 19 of whom were sick. To make matters worse, the nearest source of a cure was hundreds of miles away, across the dangerous Alaskan wilderness.(1925年,一场致命的流行病袭击了阿拉斯加州的小镇诺姆。该镇的总人口只有1400人左右,其中7人死亡,19人患病。更糟糕的是,最近的药品来源在数百英里之外,穿过危险的阿拉斯加荒野)”和第二段中“Then, a Siberian husky (a kind of dog) named Balto saved the day. Balto was just one of 150 sled (雪橇) dogs used to deliver medicine to the town through whiteout snow and dangerous ice.(然后,一只名叫巴尔托的西伯利亚哈士奇(一种狗)挽救了局面。巴尔托只是150只雪橇犬中的一只,它们被用来穿过白雪皑皑的雪地和危险的冰面向小镇运送药品)”可推知,第一段主要介绍了1925年阿拉斯加州诺姆镇爆发流行病的背景情况,包括死亡和患病人数以及药品来源的遥远和危险,为第二段中介绍“名叫巴尔托的西伯利亚哈士奇的英勇事迹”提供了背景信息。故选A项。
根据第三段中“The medicine was placed inside a metallic container, and then taken out into the Alaskan wilds by the first sled driver, ‘Wild Bill’ Shannon, who arrived at the first handoff site with injuries caused by the extreme coldness and two of his dogs lost. Eventually, the medicine made its way to Leonhard Seppala, who set out confidently with his 12-year-old sled dog, Togo, leading the pack.(药品被放在一个金属容器里,然后由第一位雪橇司机‘Wild Bill’Shannon带出阿拉斯加荒野,他在第一个交接点因极度寒冷而受伤,并且失去了两只狗。最终,药品被送到了Leonhard Seppala手中,他满怀信心地带着他12岁的雪橇狗Togo,领着狗群出发了)”和第四段中“Togo led Seppala’ s pack until they reached the next sled driver, Charlie Olson, who then passed it down to Gunnar Kaasen.(Togo领着Seppala的狗群,直到他们到达下一个雪橇司机Charlie Olson那里,然后Charlie Olson把它交给了Gunnar Kaasen)”可知,在运送药品的过程中,多位雪橇司机和他们的狗接力完成了任务,体现了团队合作。
通读全文,特别是根据第二段中“Then, a Siberian husky (a kind of dog) named Balto saved the day.(然后,一只名叫巴尔托的西伯利亚雪橇犬(一种狗)挽救了局面)”和最后一段中“And with that, Balto became a national hero who remains beloved nearly a century later.(就这样,巴尔托成为了一个国家英雄,近一个世纪后仍然深受人们爱戴)”可知,文章主要讲述了一只名叫巴尔托的雪橇狗在1925年诺姆血清运送中发挥关键作用,最终成为国家英雄的故事。因此,C项“Balto — The Hero of the Nome Serum Run(巴尔托——诺姆血清运送的英雄)”最适合作为文章标题。故选C项。
A 9. D 10. A 11. C

根据第一段中“For example, flies rely on wind to carry scents across varying environments.(例如,苍蝇依靠风在不同环境中传播气味)”以及第三段中“Most of the time when I set a piece of bad-smelling rotten meat, a large group of flies will come right away. But other times I’m surprised when no flies come to enjoy the big meal I’ve prepared.(大多数时候,当我放上一块难闻的腐肉时,一大群苍蝇会马上飞来。但其他时候,当没有苍蝇来享用我准备的大餐时,我会感到惊讶)”可知,苍蝇是靠风传播气味来发现食物的,如果没有风,它们可能就闻不到腐肉的味道,也就不会来。所以没有苍蝇来吃作者准备的 “大餐” 的原因可能是没有风在吹。故选A项。
根据第二段中“Warmer temperatures promote fly activity because they’re poikilothermic — meaning cold-blooded — and need heat to warm up their muscles for flight. Flies use visual cues (视觉信号) to fly through the air and to avoid barriers, so they’re more active during the daytime.(较高的温度会促进苍蝇的活动,因为它们是变温动物——也就是冷血动物——需要热量来温暖它们的肌肉以便飞行。苍蝇利用视觉信号在空中飞行并避免障碍,所以它们在白天更活跃)”可推知,苍蝇在温暖且是白天的时候最活跃。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“When a female fly smells something that might be a good food source for her babies, she lands on it and assesses whether there’s enough to support her 400 or so eggs, which means life and death for her babies.(当一只雌性苍蝇闻到可能是她孩子的好食物来源时,她就会落在上面,并评估是否有足够的食物来支持她的400个左右的卵,这对她的孩子来说意味着生死)”可知,雌性苍蝇选择产卵地点的决定性因素是食物的数量。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中“But since they can signal where to find female flies for mating, males will still respond to the scent of a steaming trash can.(但由于它们可以发出信号,指示在哪里可以找到雌性苍蝇进行交配,所以雄性苍蝇仍然会对热气腾腾的垃圾桶的气味做出反应)”和最后一段中“The reason why they manage to find trash cans wherever they exist is the same reason why they’ll show up to your picnic to check what’s on the menu — they’re looking for food that will help them create the next generation of flies.(它们无论在哪里都能找到垃圾桶的原因,与它们会出现在你的野餐中查看菜单上的内容的原因相同——它们在寻找能帮助它们繁衍下一代苍蝇的食物)”可知,无论是雌性苍蝇寻找产卵食物还是雄性苍蝇通过垃圾桶气味找雌性苍蝇交配,都表明雌雄苍蝇对食物气味是敏感的。故选C项。
A. Reward. B. Attraction. C. Instance. D. Annoyance.
15. What will the author probably continue to talk about?
A. The potential challenges drones will face.
B. The similarities shared by drones and fireworks.
C. The importance of drones in promoting economy.
D. The strong competition from companies in different industries.
B 13. A 14. D 15. A

根据第一段中“And fireworks, as you can guess from their name, cause fires — more than you might think.(烟花,正如你从它的名字可以猜到的那样,会引起火灾——比你想象的要多)”和第二段中“That’s what caused a handful of California towns to quit fireworks and turn to drones last year. Sydney, Australia, known for its massive fireworks display, is considering doing the same due to the risk of wildfires.(这就是去年加州一些城镇放弃烟花转向无人机的原因。澳大利亚的悉尼以其大规模的烟花表演而闻名,由于野火的风险,正在考虑也这样做)”可知,一些城镇放弃烟花是因为它们会带来火灾风险。故选B项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段内容,尤其是“In addition to reducing the risk of fires, drone light shows present a safer alternative for the folks behind the curtain. Fireworks injured more than 10,000 people last year because they can accidentally erupt while on the ground. Drones won’t.(除了降低火灾风险外,无人机灯光秀还为幕后人员提供了一个更安全的替代方案。去年,烟花造成10000多人受伤,因为它们可能会在地面上意外爆炸。无人机则不会)”可知,本段通过对比烟花和无人机灯光秀在安全性方面的差异,来说明无人机灯光秀的优势。由此推知,作者是通过对比的方式来展开第三段的。故选A项。
根据画线词上文“Fireworks, on the other hand, can burst your eardrum if you’re standing close enough.(另一方面,如果你站得足够近,烟花可能会震破你的耳膜)”以及后文“for some families with animals, small children, or other people who are sensitive to noise(对于一些有动物、小孩或对噪音敏感的人来说)”可知,烟花的噪音对于一些人来说是令人烦恼的。
根据最后一段“Nevertheless, it’s still too early to rush to the conclusion that drones will completely take the place of fireworks in the near future.(然而,现在就急于得出无人机将在不久的将来完全取代烟花的结论还为时过早)”可知,作者认为现在还不能得出无人机将完全取代烟花的结论,由此推知,接下来作者可能会继续谈论无人机面临的挑战。故选A项。

What is the origin of Family History Month?
Every human has a history of some sort or another. Usually, that history goes far back beyond ourselves. Every ancestor we have has left his mark on us. ___16___. Many people find that there is a certain comfort in knowing where they came from, and that’s why Family History Month was started.
How to celebrate Family History Month?
Celebrating the history of the family is obviously something that should happen all year round! Try out some of these ideas to get started:
* Compile (编纂) a family history
It all starts with collecting what people know about their families and compiling it together. ___17___. They include documents and records, old photographs, and verbal stories from the still- living members of the family.
Those people who are particularly lucky will have had a family member who has started the basics for them. ___18___. Today it’s a little easier than it used to be. Websites and organizations are easily found that can help people trace (追溯) their family lines.
* ___19___
Don’t let another day go by without hearing the stories that living family members have to tell about their childhoods and the family history. Whether you visit them in person or arrange for a phone call or video conversation, older family members can be vitally important to keep the family history alive. Ask them to share some stories. It will not only give information but will be good for the relationship and help them to feel needed and loved. Remember to take very good notes or record what they have to say for later generations.
* Engage with a genealogy (家谱) website
Let someone else do the hard work of finding out all of that family history and background! ___20___. Try out the genealogy websites and services, such as FamilySearch, Ancestry and MyHeritage for ideas of where to get started.
A. Connect with an older family member
B. Focus more on the telling of the elderly
C. If not, it’s probably time to take action
D. This can be done through the use of many materials
E. That has been the formation of tradition and culture within our lives
F. It carried the honors and dishonors of everyone who came before them
G. Getting connected to the past is much more practical with the help of professionals
E 17. D 18. C 19. A 20. G

根据空格前的句子“Every ancestor we have has left his mark on us.(我们的每个祖先都在我们身上留下了印记)”可知,E项“That has been the formation of tradition and culture within our lives(这就是我们生活中传统和文化的形成)”填入空格处,符合语境,因为E项中的that指的是“我们的每个祖先都在我们身上留下了印记”这件事。故选E项。
根据空格前的句子“It all starts with collecting what people know about their families and compiling it together.(这一切都始于收集人们对他们家庭的了解,并将其汇编在一起)”可知,空格处的句子应该与收集材料有关,所以,D项“This can be done through the use of many materials(这可以通过使用许多材料来实现)”填入空格处,符合语境。
根据空格前的句子“Those people who are particularly lucky will have had a family member who has started the basics for them.(那些特别幸运的人会有一个家庭成员为他们开始基本的工作)”可知,前文说足够幸运的人可能已经有家人开始做一些编家庭历史的基础工作。下文应该接着说如果没有的话,该怎样做,所以C项“If not, it’s probably time to take action(如果没有,也许是时候采取行动了)”填入空格处,符合语境。
根据下文内容“Whether you visit them in person or arrange for a phone call or video conversation, older family members can be vitally important to keep the family history alive. Ask them to share some stories. It will not only give information but will be good for the relationship and help them to feel needed and loved. Remember to take very good notes or record what they have to say for later generations.(无论你是亲自拜访他们,还是安排电话或视频交谈,年长的家庭成员对于保持家族历史的活力至关重要。请他们分享一些故事。这不仅能提供信息,而且对关系有好处,让他们感到被需要和被爱。记住要做好笔记或记录他们对后代说的话)”可知,该段主要是说要和年长的家庭成员联系,请他们分享故事,提供信息。所以,A项“Connect with an older family member(与年长的家庭成员联系)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选A项。
根据空格前的句子“Let someone else do the hard work of finding out all of that family history and background!(让别人去做找出所有家族历史和背景的艰苦工作吧!)”和空格后的“Try out the genealogy websites and services(试试家谱网站和服务)”可知,G项“Getting connected to the past is much more practical with the help of professionals(在专业人士的帮助下,与过去联系起来更加实际)”填入空格处,符合语境,G项中的“with the help of professionals”和上文的“Let someone else do the hard work”、下文的“Try out the genealogy websites and services”是对应的。故选G项。

The next day we worked out a study schedule for the exam. We divided our time wisely among different subjects. We also decided to meet in the library every evening to review together, helping each other with difficult questions and sharing our understanding of the topics. This way, we could clarify our doubts and reinforce our learning. With our combined efforts, we felt more confident and prepared for the exam. The days passed quickly, and soon it was the eve of the exam. We went to bed early, ensuring we were well-rested for the big day ahead.
On the morning of the exam, we gathered one last time. We exchanged words of encouragement and hugs. Entering the examination hall, we felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. We focused on each question, recalling the knowledge we had reviewed together. When the exam ended, we walked out with smiles, relieved and proud of our efforts. Later, we were delighted to learn that all of us had done exceptionally well. That evening, we celebrated our success, grateful for the friendships and memories we had created during our school days.
