The fire caused serious damage to several of the large, ancient stone statues (雕像) that the island is famous for. Easter Island is home to about 900 large stone statues. The large statues were created over 500 years ago by the Rapa Nui people. There are still many questions about how they were able to create, move, and stand up such statues. Hundreds of stone statues are standing near the Rano Raraku volcano inside Rapa Nui National Park. The area has been named by the United Nations as an area that’s important to protect. Sadly, that’s also where the fire was the strongest. A fire spread quickly through the Rapa Nui National Park on October 4. Park workers and fire fighters worked for hours. But the fire spread easily through the grassland around the area. It wasn’t until late the next day that the fire was brought under control. The park says it didn’t have enough volunteers to fight the fire more quickly. Experts are still investigating (调查), but it’s clear that the fire has damaged some of these stone statues. The cause of the fire isn’t known yet.But Mr. Edmunds Paoa, the mayor (市长) of Easter Island, believes the fire didn’t start naturally. “All the fires on Rapa Nui are caused by humans,” he said. He believes the island needs more government support to be able to deal with situations like this one. In fact, we spend one third of our lives sleeping! For some people, as soon as their heads hit the pillows (枕头) they’re asleep. But for others, they can’t get a good night’s rest, leaving them tired in the morning. Why would these happen? Even sleep researchers don’t know the reason for sleep. After over fifty years of studying sleep, Dr. William Dement said, “As far as I know, the only reason we need to sleep is that we get sleepy.” The main reason for sleep is that the brain needs it. Whose head doesn’t feel clearer after a good night’s sleep? But we don’t yet know how sleeping helps the brain. Some studies have connected sleep with memory. The sleeping brain appears to be necessary for long-term memory. And it can make us forget unnecessary information. So sleep may help us remember what’s important and let us forget what’s not. Sleep can help our physical health as well. We should pay attention to the needs of our bodies, such as getting enough sleep. It’s important for us to have good sleep habits. 36. As a fact, we spend ________ our lives sleeping! 37. Sleep can make us forget ________ information. 38. Around the country, hairdressers are taking the hair they cut from their customers’ heads and putting it into bags. These bags of hair are then collected by the organization that runs a project called “Hair Recycle”. The hair collected by Hair Recycle is put through a machine and made into 60-centimeter-wide square mats (垫子). These mats can then be put into a drain to absorb oil and other kinds of pollution found in water before it gets into a river or stream. According to the Hair Recycle website, I kilogram of hair can absorb up to 8 liters of oil. To take part in the project, hair salons (沙龙) have to pay a small fee (小费). Isabelle is one of the hairdressers across the country who pays a small fee to the project to collect their hair cuttings. She says she wants to help the project because she knows how much can be done with the hair. However, Belgium’s Hair Recycle is not the only hair recycling project. The stone statues have made Easter Island a very popular tourist site.Easter Island has about 160000 visitors a year. It’s now been closed as experts try to learn more about the damage caused by the fire. 31. What is Easter Island famous for? A. The Rapa Nui people. B. The beautiful grassland. C. A. ①③ B. ②③ C. ①② D. ②④ 34. Why has Easter Island now been closed? A. Because people don’t like to go there. B. Because the stone statues were damaged by the fire. C. Because the government doesn’t allow this island be open. D. Because experts try to learn more about the damage caused by the fire. 35. What is the best title for the passage? A. The Fire on Easter Island B. The Way to Fight the Fire C. The Statues on Easter Island D. 36.
