Listening is one of the basic skills. Good communication always starts with good listening.
6
Ask Good Questions
When someone comes to you with a problem, it is natural for you to give them advice.
However, instead of giving advice, asking good questions is more important. This can show that you
are interested in what people are telling you. 7
Avoid too much Nodding
Nodding while listening to people shows that you are listening carefully. 8 If you
nod too much, it may make people feel uncomfortable as they may think you are just trying to agree
with everything.
9
You also need to be patient while people are speaking. It is rude to speak while others are still

When I was about 12, I went to a restaurant for dinner with my family at night one day.
11 When my mom and I walked to the restaurant from our car, a girl about the same age as me
and her mother came up to us. They asked if we had any spare change (多余的零钱 ). My mom
immediately asked where they kept their things. 12
After giving them a few dollars, we said goodbye. My mom said she had something to do.
Then, she sent me inside the restaurant with my dad. But she didn’t come. 13 She said she
had gone home and brought some food and clothes to the girl. I asked her why she helped those
people. She told me that we were lucky and that the girl’s family wasn’t. I remembered that girl.
14 I dressed in almost new clothes but her clothes were so old. And I had my bedroom but she
had to stay in an old car with 5 other people. “My mom really did the right thing,” I thought to
myself.
15 Until now, I still remember that night.

Passage 4
Yang Hongwei is a woman who lives in Weifang, a city famous for its long history of
kite-making. She was born in a family known for its kite-making. 16 Each kite is a piece of
art with its own story.
As a child, Yang often spent her free time in her grandfather’s workshop, watching him create
magical kites. “Every kite has a story to tell,” her grandfather said, and these words left a lasting
impression on her. 17 And she practiced her skills with love for many years.
Later, with her grandfather’s encouragement, Yang decided to open her own kite shop. “Our
kites are not just for fun,” Yang explained. “They carry the spirit and stories of our ancestors (祖先).”
Her kites are very special. They have popular designs like butterflies and birds. 18
One of her most famous kites is a large phoenix with 50 small pictures of famous women from
Chinese history on its wings. 19 This kite, which took her many months to create, is an
excellent work. It shows her skill and love for traditional Chinese culture. 20 For example,
she goes to Germany and New Zealand. Travel takes her a lot of time, but she likes to share the
stories behind her kites. “It’s important to share our culture with others,” Yang says.
A.In her spare time, Yang travels to many countries.
B.Each woman has different clothing, hairstyles and expressions.
C.At the age of16, she started learning the art of kite-making from him.

Passage 5
When the air is polluted, we can wear masks (口罩) to protect ourselves. What about bees and
butterflies? They can’t wear masks.
New Scientist magazine showed some findings from James Ryalls and his team at the
University of Reading, the UK. 21 These pollinators (传花粉者) can’t smell flowers
because of the pollution.
原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究!
5
Pollinators are important, as they spread pollen among plants with flowers. This helps the
flowers grow into fruit. 22 We all need pollinators.
To do their study, Ryalls’ team built eight farm areas. Then, they put ozone (臭氧) into six of
these areas. The other two areas had normal air.
“ 23 ” said Ryalls. The levels of pollution in the six areas were just like those of traffic
on the roads. In such case, 70 percent of the insects didn’t enter the six areas. 24 And
visits to flowers were reduced by 90 percent.
Scientists said that ozone can break down the smell of flowers. 25 On the other
hand, Shannon Olsson, a scientist in India, called the results “important” because they show that
“safe” levels of pollution keep pollinators away.
A.Without pollinators, farms cannot make food.
B.We need to take action to plant more trees.
C.If they were there, they didn’t stay for a long time.
D.This makes it hard for pollinators to find their food.
E.The results were much more serious than we thought,
F.Their study found that air pollution is harmful to bees and butterflies.
Passage 6
Becoming a critical thinker is difficult. But there are some habits that one can take to build
their characters in the right direction.
● Read a lot and read widely
26 Well read people understand that there are different ways to look at a problem
and different lenses with which to view the world.
● Don’t jump to conclusions
A good critical thinker has built up the habit of not jumping to conclusions especially when
there is no data. 27
● Create systems, not goals
For example, creating a system habit that promotes writing every day is more effective than
setting the goal of writing an essay a week. 28 A goal only focuses on the outputs.
● 29

6
Great thinkers routinely and intelligently try to counter their own arguments. They go back and
forth until only the most rational and strongest argument exists based on the knowledge they have.
● Write
Writing is thinking. 30 Writing also helps us separate what we actually know from
what we think we know.
A.Have the willingness to change an opinion in the face of better data.
B.Reading is a good way to stay open-minded.
C.A system can be measured, refined, and optimized.
D.The better we get at writing, the better we get at thinking.
E.Argue with yourself.
F.They only make a conclusion once they have studied a topic in depth.
Passage 7
Many of us were told from an early age to learn from our mistakes. 31
The short answer is “yes” and failure (失败) can teach us something. But learning from our
mistakes is in fact very hard because we don’t like to fail. 32 For example, we may give
up a job easily, telling ourselves we don’t care whether we succeed, or finding mistakes with the job
itself.
This is self-protection (自我保护 ), according to a professor at the Norwegian School of
Economics. Most of us want to think of ourselves to be excellent, so failure may be bad for our
self-image (自我形象).
Luckily, there are studies to suggest that there are some methods of helping us deal with the
bad feelings around failure.
33 Instead of asking “Why did I fail?”, we could ask “Why did Sam fail?”, for
example. Many studies show that using a third-person perspective helps to reduce our bad feelings. It
allows us to look at failure more positively.
The second method is to offer advice to others who may be in the same situation. 34
Both adults and children were asked to give advice based on their own failures. Professors found that
helping others could help people understand their experience and what they had learned.
35 But it now seems that we should be saying, “Fail again. Fail more wisely.”

7
Failure can’t be avoided in life. However, we may find the road to success easily by learning.
A.But is this actually true?
B.A famous writer once said, “Fail again. Fail better.”
C.Why is it so important for us to learn from mistakes?
D.One of them is to use a third-person perspective (视角).
E.This method led to better levels of success in the test groups.
F.It doesn’t feel good, so we respond to failure in emotional (情绪化的) ways.
Passage 8
To dye (染色) clothes by machines is very common now. 36 This skill is called
tie-dye (扎染). It is said that tie-dyed clothes appeared in the Qin Dynasty. During the Tang Dynasty,
tie-dyed clothes became very popular. 37
Yang Cheng, a 52-year-old man, was well-known for his tie-dye skills. He started learning
tie-dye in the 1980s. Later, he went to other countries to learn different ways of tie-dye, such as
Japan, India and France. He has been studying tie-dye for 35 years and he wants more people to
know it. 38 More than 100, 000 people have learned from him.
Tie-dye is one of Chinese intangible cultural heritages (非物质文化遗产). It has become very
popular among people. 39 Liu Mei is a teacher at a kindergarten. She teaches kids to dye

pictures on it.
A.At present, he teaches tie-dye in schools, communities and companies.

43 As we are interested in equestrian sports, we had a lot of questions: How do you
keep a good relationship with a horse? 44 They patiently answered all of our questions.
They said if you treat the horse as a friend and trust it, it will do better in the competitions. 45

Many people may throw away the pits (果核) inside fruits after eating them. 46
Weifang nut carving (潍坊核雕 ) goes back to the Qing Dynasty. During that time, an old
imperial craftsman (皇家手艺人 ) Wang Dayan spread the skill to the local people in Shandong
Province. 47
Because of the high level of carving skills needed, the traditional culture and its rich artistic theme,
Weifang nut carving was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (国家非物质文化遗产) in
2008. “One nut, from 0. 8 to 6 centimeters long, can be made into fan pendants (坠饰), earrings,
buttons, seals and so on,” said Tan Wanhai, 48, an inheritor of Weifang nut carving. 48
However, the craftsman also said that bringing this kind of artwork to life is not easy. They
have to study each peach pit to carefully plan out their artwork.
49 According to Tan, they have to master skills in painting, seal carving (印章篆刻)
and calligraphy from many traditional cultures.
Thanks to their creative design and fresh ideas, Weifang nut carving artworks have been
