healthy they are. Although some snacks like chocolate and candies are found everywhere, others are
special to a country or a culture. Let’s have a look.

tea”. Traditional afternoon tea is biscuits and tea. People also have the scone (烤饼, 司康饼) with
jam and cream, which is probably the most classic English snack. Potato chips and French fries are
Popular in the UK, too.
Do you want to eat snacks in a healthy way? Here are some helpful tips. Have a look! A handful

Not so secret anymore, I thought. I ran to the tree and looked into the hole. It was full of pecans!
Golden pecans were right there for taking. This was my chance. Handful by handful, I put all pecans

I ran back quickly and couldn’t wait to show Grandpa the pecans. He looked into the basket and
said, “Well, well, how did you find so many?”
“I followed the squirrel and took the pecans from his hiding place.”
Grandpa was glad that I could find out something about the squirrel’s habits. Then he did
something that surprised me. He handed the basket back to me and said, “That squirrel worked very

The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms (节气). It starts from
the Beginning of Spring and ends with the Greater Cold, moving in cycles. It is still useful today to
guide people’s lives through special foods, cultural ceremonies and even healthy living tips.
Grain Buds (小满) is the 8th solar term of a year. It means that the seeds (种子) from the grain
are becoming full. During the Grain Buds, summer harvest is about to begin. A saying about rain
during this time mentions, “A heavy rainfall makes the river full.” Because of the great increase in
rainfall, rivers are full of water. This is a good time to enjoy fish. It is also the harvest season for
fishermen.
Frost’s Descent (霜降), the 18th solar term of the year, is the last solar term of autumn, during
which time the weather becomes much colder than before and frost begins to appear. The apple is
one kind of the recommended (推荐的) fruit during Frost’s Descent. There are many sayings about

Passage 14
China’s biggest solar-powered drone (太阳能无人机 ), Qimingxing-50 or Morning Star 50,
finished its first test flight in September, 2022. The drone was built by the Aviation Industry
Corporation of China (AVIC, 中国航空工业集团有限公司).
Drones have been used for quite a few years now. There are different ways of increasing the
flying time. However, all these methods become less useful compared with the unlimited (无限的)
power provided by the Sun. That’s why researchers have been working to make solar-powered
drones that can not only stay in the air for longer but also perform more tasks while in the sky.
In 2018, China tested the first version (版本) of Morning Star, which was 91 feet wide. Made
from a special kind of plastic, the drone was so light, weighing only 41 pounds. Compared with it,
the Morning Star 50 is much larger and has a wingspan (翼展) of 164 feet.

On September 3, Morning Star 50 took off from an airport in Yulin City in the Shaanxi province
in northwest China and landed back 26 minutes later after a smooth flight. Staff told some local
reporters that all flight systems worked normally. This is a good start for future flights of the
solar-powered drone that could last for many days or even months at a time.
In the US, Airbus has been testing the Zephyr solar-powered drones for the past few years. Its
latest version, the Zephyr S, came close to breaking the record for the longest flight. It stayed in the
air for 64 days. Unluckily, the drone fell onto the ground only a few hours before it would have set a
new record.
53.Which one is an advantage of solar-powered drones researchers want?
A.They’re cheaper than others. B.They can fly in bad weather.
C.They fly at a higher speed. D.They can stay in the air for longer.
54.What made the first version of Morning Star light?
A.Its look. B.Its material.
C.The power it uses. D.The tasks it performs.

Passage 16
Try thinking of a mother black bear sleeping in her home. You place a baby bear near her,
hoping she’ll raise it as one of her own babies. It is a little strange, right? But that’s what some
wildlife scientists are doing. Katie Martin is one of them. She studies mother bears with babies. Then,
she matches them with baby bears without mums.
To learn more about the baby bears, Martin puts collars (项圈 ) on them. The collars help her
track (追踪 ) the bears’ movements and gather some important information. Then she can know if
foster (代养的) mums look after the poor babies.
Martin usually waits for a rainy, cold day to do the thing. She places a baby bear near the foster
mum’s home quietly. The cold air makes the baby cry. When the mother bear hears it, she may pity
the baby and bring it home.
“It’s the best way for the baby bears to learn how to be a bear,” Martin said. “The foster mums
can teach them how to look for food and climb trees.” Sometimes, people find baby bears alone in
the forest and they take them home. Martin said, “That’s the worst thing to do. This is because the
mother bear always comes back.”
Martin has helped almost 20 bear babies find foster mums. She checked a baby bear she placed
last winter. “It looked good and healthy. That was a true success,” she said.

unhappy. “I think we should do the book report like a show,” Chip said. He was very excited to work
with Hank, because Hank always got good grades.
“But it is not a show,” Hank reminded him. “It is a book report. We have to write it down.”
“We will write it down,” Chip said. “But instead of reading it in front of the class, we will act it
out! We can present(展示)the book report like it’s a play. Or maybe we can sing it!”
Hank did not want to sing his book report. That evening he told his parents about Chip. “I do not
want to work with Chip,” Hank said. “I don’t think Chip understands what a book report is.”
“Your teacher told you to work with Chip, and that is what you must do,” Hank’s father said.
“This task is not just about reading a book and writing a report. It is about working with someone
else to get a job done, even if you have differences.”
The next day, as soon as Hank walked into the classroom, Chip came up to him. “I have an idea!”
Chip cried out. “Let’s draw our book report like a comic(连环画)!” Hank was not sure about this
idea. But he remembered what his father said. “We will read the book and talk about it together, and
decide what we want to say,” Chip said. “Then you will say some of it with words, and I will say
some of it with pictures!”

Passage 20
There are many aspects (方面) to language learning, such as how to say words, which words to
choose, and what form of words to use. All of these aspects together can make learning a foreign
language very difficult. But there are some points that might make it easier, and more fun.
First, don’t worry too much about pronouncing words the wrong way. Pronunciation is important,
of course. It helps the listener to understand what is said more clearly. However, the most important
step in learning a new language is to practice speaking it. Like learning any new skill (技能), practice
makes perfect. And when you practice speaking the new language, the native speaker (说本族语的
人) usually thinks highly of your hard work and is ready to help improve your pronunciation.
Second, don’t be afraid to guess the meaning of what someone says. There will be a lot of words
to learn while studying a foreign language. In fact, there are tens of thousands of different words in
English. And a word may have more than one meaning. The same goes with any other language. It is
impossible to know all the words and all the meanings. Use clues (提示) to guess the meaning of
what others say. When meeting a person that says “Hola” and waves his or her hand, one might guess
that the person is giving a greeting. It is not important at that moment to know the exact meaning.
With more practice of guessing the meaning of new words, your vocabulary will increase.

Third, don’t lose hope. Learning a new language always takes time. Many will give up learning
because learning all of the rules of another language is too hard or boring. Some may think that other
people will make fun of them for making mistakes. But it’s OK to make mistakes. Nobody is perfect,
after all. Don’t give up and keep trying.
In the end, learning a new language can be difficult, but remember that it can have great benefits
(益处). Learning a new language doesn’t just mean the ability to speak in that different language. It
can also include making new friends, experiencing new adventures in a different culture, and tasting
new foods!
76.What can we learn from the passage?
A.English has more words than any other language.
B.Native speakers think highly of perfect pronunciation.
C.Guessing the meaning of new words is an important skill.
D.Learning grammar rules is easier than learning pronunciation.
77.The writer suggests a foreign language learner should __________.
A.go to a foreign country to learn it
B.feel relaxed about making mistakes
C.remember as many words as possible
D.find interesting ways to learn the rules
78.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Advice for learning a foreign language.
B.Reasons for learning a foreign language.
C.Difficulties in learning a foreign language.
D.Advantages of learning a foreign language.
