B On a recent afternoon, Sarah Levy picked up an empty pickle jar from a shelf in her store, sniffed it, and then suggested a customer fill it with soap. There’s a take-a-jar, leave-a-jar policy at Cleenland, Levy’s new “low-waste, no-shame” store that lets shoppers stock up on cleaning supplies using their own bottles. And as an early adopter of a new shift in American consumption habits, she has become expert at getting the pickle smell out of glass. “This is not a trend; it’s a rebirth of interest in reusing instead of recycling,” said Levy. As consumers seek to limit the waste they create, more local entrepreneurs like Levy are stepping in to serve them and have begun opening stores — physical, mobile, and online. Boston General Store is selling a growing variety of zero-waste decorations. Make & Mend sells secondhand arts and crafts supplies in Somerville’s Bow Market. Julia Wilson, who tracks business sustainability efforts for the Nielsen research firm, says 73% of consumers are looking to shift their consumption habits to reduce their environmental impact, and she predicts that they’ll spend $150 billion on sustainable goods by 2023. “It opens the door for new entrepreneurs who are thinking about things differently and upstart products and brands,” she said. Some entrepreneurs are using a “circular economy” model in which goods are delivered in strong packages and they are sent back when they’re empty. Boston-based ThreeMain opened earlier this year selling cleaning products in reusable aluminum bottles. The most well-funded attempt, Loop, sells 100 major brands in reusable containers. Levy recognizes the difficulty involved in changing consumer habits, but she says the model works because she’s selling necessities. And she’s hopeful, as zero-waste shops have exploded abroad in Britain, Canada, and particularly in Australia, where the non-profit Plastic Free Foundation launched the Plastic Free July campaign, which has become a global phenomenon. 24. Boston General Store and Make & Mend are mentioned to show many local companies ______. A. have taken part in the low-waste campaign B. ignore their customers’ consumption habits C. find it important to offer diverse products D. have taken action to expand their business 25. According to Julia Wilson, what should entrepreneurs do in the future? A. Pay more attention to the quality of their goods. B. Promote new-branded goods on a regular basis. C. Make sure their goods are affordable and reusable. D. Provide sustainable goods for the market. 26. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. Necessities are always in great demand in the market. B. Non-profit organizations favor zero-waste lifestyles most. C. Levy believes zero-waste shops will be accepted worldwide. D. Countries should work together to change consumer habits. 27. How does the author support his opinion in the text? A. By giving examples. B. By analyzing causes. C. By making comparisons. D. By making predictions. C Since the AI chatbot ChatGPT was released in 2020 we’ve been hearing about the threat posed by artificial intelligence. A statement signed by academic experts and tech industry figures even branded AI an “extinction risk.” In education, there have been concerns that ChatGPT could negatively affect the learning process of students. For example, students could ask ChatGPT to write their coursework for them, skipping the research and writing effort that leads to a better understanding of the topic in question. Perhaps a better approach would be to change and enhance how we teach and assess the outcomes of learning. Making education more focused on practical skills and the use of knowledge in problem solving could ensure a deeper understanding on the part of students. AI could be used for guidance, in much the same way we currently use calculators, to help enrich people’s knowledge. However, risks do exist. In May 2023, for example, a US lawyer admitted using ChatGPT for case research. The lawyer’s filing was found to reference legal cases that didn’t exist. The chatbot had made them up. It’s not the first time that these “AI hallucinations” have been reported. Then we have the very real risk that AI could be used for illegal purposes such as identity theft. For example, criminals could use AI to clone someone’s voice. They could then phone family members and try to convince them to give out sensitive information that could be helpful for accessing bank accounts. A variant of AI-driven identity theft is the use of deepfake videos. However, Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder, sounds less worried than some other executives in Silicon Valley about the risks of artificial intelligence. In a blog post on Tuesday, he wrote, “This is not the first time a major innovation has introduced new threats that had to be controlled. We’ve done it before.” 28. What is a consequence of students’ using ChatGPT? A. Reduced learning time. B. Improved academic performance. C A lack of learning process. D. Health issues. 29. What might be an example of AI hallucinations? A. Reproducing real events. B. Recommending irrelevant information. C. Providing incorrect recommendations. D. Generating non-existent legal cases. 30. What’s paragraph 5 mainly about? A. Identity theft through AI techniques. B Cloning someone’s voice using AI. C. The potential dangers of AI for illegal purposes. D. Deepfake videos as a form of AI-driven identity theft. 31. What attitude does Bill Gates have to the side effects of AI? A. He doesn’t care about them. B. He thinks them controllable. C. He takes them very seriously. D. He doubts their occurrence. D Is it true that our brain alone is responsible for human cognition(认知)? What about our body? Is it possible for thought and behaviour to originate from somewhere other than our brain? Psychologists who study Embodied Cognition(EC)ask similar questions. The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the mind in equal measure. If you think about it for a moment, it makes total sense. When you smell something good or hear amusing sounds, certain emotions are awakened. Think about how newborns use their senses to understand the world around them. They don’t have emotions so much as needs – they don’t feel sad, they’re just hungry and need food. Even unborn babies can feel their mothers’ heartbeats, and this has a calming effect. In the real world, they cry when they’re cold and then get hugged. That way, they start to associate being warm with being loved. Further studies have backed up the mind-body interaction. In one experiment, test subjects were asked to judge people after being handed a hot or a cold drink. They all made warm evaluations when their fingertips perceived warmth rather than coolness. And it works the other way too. In another study, subjects’ fingertip temperatures were measured after being “included” in or “rejected” from a group task. Those who were included felt physically warmer. For further proof, we can look at the metaphors(比喻)that we use without even thinking. A kind and sympathetic person is frequently referred to as one with a soft heart and someone who is very strong and calm in difficult situations is often described as solid as a rock. And this kind of metaphorical use is common across languages. Now that you have the knowledge of mind-body interaction, why not use it? If you’re having a bad day, a warm cup of tea will give you a flash of pleasure. If you know you’re physically cold, warm up before making any interpersonal decisions. 32. According to the author, what is the significance of EC? A. It brings us closer to the truth in human cognition. B. It offers a clearer picture of the shape of human brain. C. It reveals the major role of the mind in human cognition. D. It facilitates our understanding of the origin of psychology. 33. Where does the newborns’ understanding of their surroundings start from? A. Their personal looks. B. Their mental needs. C. Their inner emotions. D. Their physical feelings. 34. What does the author intend to prove by citing the metaphors in Paragraph 4? A. Human speech is alive with metaphors. B. Human senses have effects on thinking. C. Human language is shaped by visual images. D. Human emotions are often compared to natural materials. 35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph? A. To deepen the readers’ understanding of EC. B. To encourage the reader to put EC into practice. C. To guide the reader onto the path to career success. D. To share with the reader ways to release their emotions. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Ask a group of kids about their favorite part of the school day and many will talk about something that happened at recess (课间休息). It’s true not just according to kids, but also to adults who study recess for kids. Whether they’re inventing a new game or sitting under a tree, kids need a break — or several of them — during the school day. Why kids need recess ____37____. You need time away to process (处理) it. Besides, physical activity that involves arms and legs — running, climbing, crawling — builds new neural(神经的) connections, which helps kids regulate their emotions (情感). Studies show that after recess children are more attentive in class, perform better and have fewer emotional problems. How much recess kids should get “Ideally, children should get four 15-minute recesses every day”, says Debbie Rhea, a professor from Texas Christian University, who advocates (提倡) for outdoor play in schools. ____38____. It is noted that Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recently expanded (扩展) the idea to encourage recess for all students, including those in middle and high school. ____39____ In addition to simply providing enough time for recess, schools should teach skills that will make recess more successful. For instance, letting kids run fast will help them develop coordination (协调性). Maybe running up the slide (滑梯) is not as unsafe as it looks. ____40____. To allow children to take reasonable risks with their bodies is also a wise move. A. How to make recess better B. Who should help kids at recess C. This suggestion has been widely accepted D. Any one of these things is a marker of a good recess E. You can’t have your brains go hours at a time to store information F. We wouldn’t have kids sitting there for math or reading for long hours G. It was Friday again — a weekend of joy with unlimited sleeping hours and dinner courses specially made to my taste. I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers’ warm and comfortable cars. Curiously, this gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me. It was not exactly what they called jealousy, but something like depression. I knew all 1 could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain creaking against the wheel to announce her arrival. Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up, it was a moment full of great expectation and great unease. I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the cars and saw my friends’ faces sticking out of the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt. To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache occasionally. She looks like a homely middle-aged housewife. She knits most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles. Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I’d force a smile and reply in a half-joking manner: homemade. She simply doesn’t seem to understand what’s in fashion; Chanel or Gucci means nothing to her. I couldn’t remember when l started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp, or riding across town to buy me a book 1 badly needed. It had always been fun riding with her. I had enjoyed watching our shadows growing longer and shorter in an alternate fashion by the light of the streetlamps along the road. Just now there seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange to me and me to her. 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Today Mom showed up in a raincoat. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mom tried to cover me with the raincoat again as a storm set in. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 江苏省通州高级中学2024-2025学年度 第一学期高一第二次阶段性测试英语试卷 第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分) 做题时,先将答案标在试卷上。 6. Living a healthy life is important to each of us. However, many high-school students don’t have healthy living habits. For example, a lot of them often lose themselves in playing computer games and stay up very late at night. What’s worse, most of them go to school without breakfast. In my opinion, health is the most important thing. We need to live a healthy life. Here are some suggestions. First, having a good sleep is necessary. We should get up early and go to bed early. Moreover, it’s vital to keep a balanced diet. Students need to have breakfast every morning on time, and eat enough vegetables and fruits. That’s all. I was sick of these.Howl wished I could also have a rich parents like my classmates. Thinking about these things, I was quite dissatisfied with my mother. She also didn’t say a word with me. She just wanted to make sure that I didn’t get wet. She seemed to know What I felt.
