Making education more focused on practical skills and the use of knowledge in problem solving could ensure a deeper understanding on the part of students. AI could be used for guidance, in much the same way we currently use calculators, to help enrich people’s knowledge. However, risks do exist. In May 2023, for example, a US lawyer admitted using ChatGPT for case research. The lawyer’s filing was found to reference legal cases that didn’t exist. The chatbot had made them up. It’s not the first time that these “AI hallucinations” have been reported. Then we have the very real risk that AI could be used for illegal purposes such as identity theft. For example, criminals could use AI to clone someone’s voice. They could then phone family members and try to convince them to give out sensitive information that could be helpful for accessing bank accounts. A variant of AI-driven identity theft is the use of deepfake videos. However, Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder, sounds less worried than some other executives in Silicon Valley about the risks of artificial intelligence.
