Edna, who lives in Canada, has become famous for the fitness level she maintains at age 91. The mom of five, grandmother of twenty-one and great-grandmother of four still drives now. “I’ve always had a busy lifestyle because, let’s face it, with that many children, you have to be busy,” Edna said. “So, I never really thought about it. That’s just the way I live.” She said she only really began to focus on her fitness in her sixties, when she was forced to retire from her job at a local hospital. She had to face the fact that she was 60. To keep herself busy, Edna began gardening again that she had to give up due to her busy work. She said she also started going to the gym in her 60s, which she still does every other day. “I have to keep my feet to the fire because it’s cold in the morning in winter, and when it’s snowy or icy out there, I don’t really feel like going outside,” she said. “But I make myself do it and mark it on the calendar. So I cannot take any shortcuts.” Edna said she focused on walking at the gym for her heart health and also included lots of weight lifting in her schedule to keep her bone strength. “When in the gym, I don’t try to break any records or compete with anyone else,” Edna said. “I only push myself to do better all the time, and I only compete with myself.” When it came to her age, Edna said the people at the gym didn’t realize she’s 91. She prefers it that way, because when people do realize she’s in her 90s, they’ll surely demand to help her. “I know them well. But I don’t really want help,” said Edna. “It’s funny to say that, but I like to be independent.” 1. What made Edna leave her job in the hospital? A. Her turning sixty. B. Her looking after many kids. C. Her wish to live a busy life. D. Her suffering from a heart problem. 2. What do we know about Edna in her sixties? A. She lives in a cold place all year round. B. She manages to be a regular at the gym. C. She develops a new hobby for gardening. D. She likes to take shortcuts in her daily life. 3. Which of the following best describes the people at the gym? A. Competitive. B. Humorous. C. Cautious. D. Caring. 4. What can we learn from Edna’s story? A. The elderly like to follow fashions. B. Experience beats youth. C. A positive attitude prolongs life. D. Fitness is fit for everyone. C In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what“keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy ncighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours. It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back' to an apartment in New York City. Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it“Keeping up with the Joneses” because“Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand's series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years. People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are“Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must stop trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead. 5. According to the author, what does“keep up with the Joneses” mean? A. Some people want to be as rich as their neighbors. B. Some people want others to know or to think that they are rich. C. Some people don't want their neighbors to realize they are rich. D. Some people want to be as happy as the Joneses. 6. What can be inferred from the story about rich people? A. They ride horses to big parties. B. They like to be left alone in their apartments. C. They prefer to live outside New York City. D. They are good at writing short stories. 7. Why did Arthur Momand use the name“Jones” in his series of short stories? A. Mr. Jones is the richest. B. It's a popular name in the United States C. Mr. Jones is his neighbour. D. It's a name too common to be liked. 8. How does the author find“keeping up with the Joneses”? A. Advisable. B. Fun. C. Impossible. D. Challenging. D It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put my headphones on? I think better that way.” But is that really true? Does music help concentrate? Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration. In one small study, 133 students performed reading tasks while listening to either light music, hip hop, or no music at all. Students who performed the reading tasks in silence scored the highest. Music with a higher intensity (强度) like hip hop was more distracting and had a bad effect on task performance. Volume (音量) plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration. The type of music didn’t matter. Data from the study showed once again that silence was the best environment to improve concentration. However, music has a positive effect on work performance. Studies have showed that listening to music leads to positive changes in mood, as well as creativity. In fact, in music-listening cultures, which students are certainly part of, there’s actually a change in mood when the music is taken away. It’s hard to convince my students that music doesn’t help with their concentration. Taj, a senior told me, “I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply. I don’t have writer’s block. It’s easy for me to put my words on paper.” “Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me. “You could actually be singing along with what you’re listening to and doing well in math.” 9. What does the underlined word “distracting” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Making it difficult for someone to concentrate. B. Causing great excitement. C. Making someone want to do something. D. Making someone feel frightened. 10. What can we learn from the small study? A. Students do well in reading tasks while listening to music. B. Music can’t improve people’s mood and creativity. C. Different types of music lead to different performances. D. The volume of music affects concentration. 11. What do Taj and Danela have in common? A. They believe music doesn’t help concentrate. B. They use music to help with their paper-writing. C. They can’t focus on reading while listening to music. D. They don’t listen to music while doing math problems. 12. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Should Students Listen to Music? B. Does Music Help Concentration? C. Is Music Related to Reading? D. Can Music Change Mood? The Feynman Technique (费曼学习法) is a powerful method that you can use to learn anything faster because it forces you to actively think about the problem instead of passively reading or listening to someone else talk about it. She had to face the fact that she was 60. 故选A项。 根据第三段中“She said she also started going to the gym in her 60s, which she still does every other day. B 6. C 7. B 8. 根据文章第一段“In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about.(在美国,当一个人变得富有了,他想让人们知道这一点。而且即使他没有变得非常富有,他也想让人们认为他很富有。这就是“keeping up with the Joneses”的含义所在)”可知,上文提到了在美国,当一个人变得富有了,他想让人们知道这一点,由此可知,“keep up with the Joneses”的意思是有些人希望别人知道或者认为他们很富有。故选B项。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第二段 “He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City.(他结了婚,和妻子搬到了纽约市外一个非常富裕的街区)”可知Arthur Momand结了婚并和妻子搬到了纽约市外一个非常富裕的街区。再根据第三段“The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back' to an apartment in New York City.( 当莫曼德和他的妻子再也无法负担这种新的生活方式时,比赛结束了。他们搬回了纽约市的一个公寓)”可知Momand和他的妻子再也无法负担这种新的生活方式时,搬回了纽约市的一个公寓,可以推断出富人更喜欢住在纽约市外,故选C项。 【7题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第四段“He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States.(他把它叫做“Keeping up with the Joneses”,是因为“Jones”在美国是一个非常常见的名字)”可知,Arthur Momand 在他的系列短篇小说中使用“Jones”这个名字是因为它在美国是个很流行、常见的名字。 根据文章最后一段“But one must stop trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.(但是人们必须停止试图去追赶琼斯们,因为无论一个人做什么,琼斯先生似乎总是领先)” 可知,作者认为想要一直追赶别人保持一样的富有生活是不可能做到的,所以是 “impossible(不可能的)”。故选C项。 D It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. 根据第二段第一句“Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration.(研究几乎没有提供什么支持听音乐可以提高注意力的观点)”可知,本段主要讨论听音乐是否能提高注意力,结合画线单词上文和下文“Music with a higher intensity (强度) like hip hop was more distracting had a greater negative effect on task performance and concentration.(高强度的音乐,如嘻哈音乐更distracting,对任务表现和注意力有更大的负面影响)”可知,高强度的音乐,如嘻哈音乐是不能提高注意力的,是使人分心的,所以划线单词“distracting”的意思是“使人分心的”,和A选项“Making it difficult for someone to concentrate.(让人难以集中注意力)”意思相近,故选A。 根据第三段中的“The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration.(研究发现,音乐越响,注意力越差)”可知,音量会影响注意力,故选D。 根据倒数第二段中的“Taj, a senior told me “I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read.(Taj,一个高年级学生,他告诉我,“如果我听音乐并试图阅读,我会不能集中注意力”)”和最后一段中的““Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me.(Danela告诉我:“听音乐也许对阅读没有好处,但是当涉及到数学时,听音乐肯定有帮助。”)”可知,Taj和Danela的共同之处在于,他们在听音乐时,无法集中精力阅读,故选C。 【12题详解】 主旨大意题。 通读全文,尤其是第一段“It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put my headphones on? I think better that way.” But is that really true? The Feynman Technique (费曼学习法) is a powerful method that you can use to learn anything faster because it forces you to actively think about the problem instead of passively reading or listening to someone else talk about it. You can take the following five simple steps to study better. Find out the topic you want to learn. ____13____. Otherwise, you’ll end up jumping between topics without developing a deeper understanding of any of them. Explain the topic as if teaching a sixth-grader. This step is the heart of the Feynman Technique —— ____14____. This requires you to meet the child at their level of understanding by using the simplest way. Discover areas of improvement in your explanation. You’ll need to critically (批判性地) review the explanation you came up with in Step Two. ____15____. Try to find any knowledge gaps, together with any areas where you felt that you couldn’t explain the topic simply. ____16____. Think about all the knowledge gaps and other areas of improvement you found before. Consider how you can fill in those gaps and make your explanation better. Repeat the steps until you’ve achieved mastery of the topic. Keep going through each step until you’re fully satisfied with your explanation. ____17____, and that is why going through all the prior steps just once is usually not enough to achieve topic mastery. A. Improve your explanation. B. To do so, take a critical look at your explanation C. Make sure that your explanation is interest-based D. Your explanations need to be short and to the point E. The Feynman Technique works best with a repeat F. It’s important that you clearly know the topics you’re trying to learn G. Explaining the topic simply enough to be understood by a sixth-grade student 【答案】13. F 14. G 15. B 16. A 17. 【13题详解】 上文“Find out the topic you want to learn. (找出你想学习的主题。)”说明学习前要找出学习的主题。空处进一步明确学习主题的重要性,F项中的“you clearly know the topics”和前文中的“Find out the topic”相呼应,说明F项“清楚地知道你想学习的主题很重要”符合语境。故选F。 【14题详解】 上文“Explain the topic as if teaching a sixth-grader. This step is the heart of the Feynman Technique (像教六年级学生一样解释这个话题。这一步是费曼技巧的核心)”以及下文“This requires you to meet the child at their level of understanding by using the simplest way. (这就要求你用最简单的方式来满足孩子的理解水平。)”说明费曼技巧的核心就是以最简单的方式解释问题。空处承上启下,G项中的“be understood by a sixth-grade student”和上文“teaching a sixth-grader”相呼应,“Explaining the topic simply enough”和下文中的“by using the simplest way”相呼应,说明G“简单地解释这个话题,让六年级的学生能够理解”符合语境。 故选G。 【15题详解】 上文“Discover areas of improvement in your explanation. You’ll need to critically (批判性地) review the explanation you came up with in Step Two. (发现你的解释中需要改进的地方。你需要批判性地回顾你在第二步中提出的解释。)”说明需要批判性的回顾你的解释,并找出需要改进的地方,空处需要具体说明如何进行批判性的回顾。B项中的“take a critical look at your explanation”和上文中的“need to critically (批判性地) review the explanation”,相呼应,说明B项“为了做到这一点,你需要对你自己的解释进行批判性审查。” 【16题详解】 下文“Think about all the knowledge gaps and other areas of improvement you found before. Consider how you can fill in those gaps and make your explanation better. (想想你之前发现的所有知识差距和其他需要改进的领域。考虑如何填补这些空白,使你的解释更好。)”说明本段主要介绍了发现解释中的不足之处并想方法进行改进。A项“改进你的解释。”适合作本段的主旨句,统领全段。故选A。 【17题详解】 上文“Repeat the steps until you’ve achieved mastery of the topic. (重复这些步骤,直到你掌握了这个主题。)”以及下文“and that is why going through all the prior steps just once is usually not enough to achieve topic mastery. I live with my husband Jack in Iowa, which is over 1,000 miles away from Florida.
