Chang’e 5 completed its task successfully in 23 days, not only did it return with valuable rock and soil sample from the moon, but also brought back a group of seeds that traveled the furthest in China. More than 30 kinds of seeds, including that of rice, oats etc. were placed inside the Chang’e 5 spacecraft and went around the moon for about 15 days.
Scientists wished to check what would happen to the seeds after the task. This task offered good opportunities to scientists, which helped them to deepen their studies on the effect of cosmic (宇宙的) rays on the growth and development of life on Earth.
Space-based mutation breeding (太空诱变育种) refers to the process of placing seeds in the environment such as microgravity (微重力), vacuums (真空) and cosmic radiation during a spaceflight and then sending them back to Earth for further study and planting. Scientists study and examine several generations of plants grown from seeds which went into the space and study their changes—some are desirable while others are bad and negative. Those with good changes will be kept for further research, and will be introduced to farmers after getting permission.
Space breeding can make the seeds change faster than the experiments on the earth and can bring about some wonderful results. Compared with the traditional methods, space-developed methods can make the seeds grow much better, such as having shorter growth periods and having more power to fight against diseases and insect.
China did its first space breeding experiment in 1987, using a satellite to carry seeds into space Since then, hundreds of kinds of seeds and seedlings have traveled with dozens of Chinese spaceships. Space breeding has helped to produce more than 200 new types of mutated plants in China that have been allowed to be planted across the country from grains to vegetables and fruits.
The Chang’e 5 brought back 1,731 grams of moon’s rock and soil to Earth, showing a historic achievement 44 years after the last moon’s rock and soil were taken back.
36.Why did scientists place seeds in Chang’e 5 spacecraft?
A.To pick out the best seeds. B.To understand the environment of space.
C.To study the cosmic rays. D.To do special experiments on them.
37.What is the advantage of space-based seed growth methods?
A.They make it possible for plants to survive on the moon.
B.They shorten the growth period of plants and make them unlikely to get sick.
C.They get rid of the need for traditional farming methods.
D.They help to produce more crops than traditional farming methods.
38.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.Chang’e 5 was the first spacecraft China had ever made.
B.China was the first to do a space breeding experiment.
C.It is some time since seeds were last taken into space.

Do you want to be an astronaut in the future? Every year on April 24, it’s Space Day of China. It’s a day to celebrate the country’s growth in space exploration. The successful manned space missions (任务) are a big part of it. Ever since Yang Liwei made it to space in 2003, as many as over 20 Chinese astronauts have gone to space. Being an astronaut is cool but sometimes dangerous.
What problems do astronauts face?
In space, astronauts face many problems. There is little gravity there, which influences their bodies. Also, being away from family and friends and stuck in a tiny spaceship for a long time can make them feel sad or stressed out. What’s more, if something goes wrong on their mission all of a sudden, they have to work out how to fix it under huge pressure. That’s why astronauts have to be smart, strong and ready for any challenge before they can go to space.
How are astronauts trained?
To make sure that Chinese astronauts complete their missions and return to Earth safely. “Eight types, covering more than 200 subjects of training, are set.” Huang Weifen, chief designer of the astronaut system for China’s manned space project, told CCTV News. Apart from physical training, it also includes basic science knowledge and mock (模拟) missions. Before astronauts can go to space, they train like this for at least three and a half years.
One of the hardest parts of the training for astronauts is the underwater training. This helps them get ready for the weightless environment in space. Huang explained that astronauts wear diving suits (潜水服) that weigh more than 100 kilograms and stay underwater for six hours at a time. Moving around in the water with such a heavy suit is really tiring.
Huang said that one astronaut, Nie Haisheng, even lost 2 kilograms after one underwater training exercise.
Train hard to work in space
China has achieved great success in space exploration. A number of Chinese astronauts have been to space 56 2003. Being an astronaut is cool but 57 , so training is necessary.

D.Space breeding has made a difference in farming in China.
39.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Space breeding is the best way to develop seeds.
B.China is the first country to do space breeding experiment.
C.China will spend more time and energy on space breeding.
D.Chang’e 5 spacecraft will fly to the moon again.
40.What is the best title of the passage?
