By March 18, it had made around 3.5 billion yuan at the box office, reported Paper. Directed by 41-year-old Jia Ling, the movie tells the story of a woman tired of the world, finding herself and learning to love life through boxing (拳击). The name of YOLO is short for the movie’s main idea—you only live once. Jia Ling has tried many different roles in her life, including crosstalk (相声) and sketch (小品) performer, variety show (综艺节目) guest and actress. The movie Hi, Mom (《你好,李焕英》) in 2019 is the first one Jia directed in her life. Jia didn’t study directing at university. It makes her feel freer in film making because she doesn’t need to follow a fixed style. To everyone’s surprise, Hi, Mom made her the world’s highest-grossing (票房最高的) woman director before 2023. Before making YOLO, Jia was often seen as an overweight comedian (喜剧演员). She often made jokes about herself to make people laugh. For this movie, Jia lost more than 50kg which made it hard to imagine that this is the same Jia we once knew. Some people online said even her voice became softer, and they called this a “rebirth” for Jia. She has proved through her actions, that if you want to be successful, you need to try your best. In Jia’s eyes, her change in identity (身份) and look is her way of saying true to herself. “It’s hard to predict one’s life. I’m just following my heart but not looking for changes in purpose. Movies are now the best way to show myself, so I put all my energy into them.” Jia told Xinhua. “In fact, Jia didn’t change. She’s just being more herself. She shows us through her actions,” said talk show host Chen Luyu. 33.How old is Jia Ling? A.Forty. B.Forty-one. C.Fifty. D.Fifty-one. 34.When did Jia Ling become a director for the first time? Most of them are about her experience with food from around the world, especially in China. She says she cooks in a very relaxed way, going to the farmers’ market at the weekend to buy seasonal products for everyday cooking—a mixture of Jiangnan, Hunan, Guangdong, and Sichuan dishes. “For me, there are so many wonderful things about Chinese food. The thing that I find greatest about it is that you can eat food that is both really delicious and incredibly healthy,” Dunlop says. “The Chinese are experts at cooking vegetables, so it’s very easy for me to eat Chinese food almost every day.” Growing up in Oxford, Dunlop dreamed of becoming a cook when she was little. However, her dream did not come true until she came to Chengdu as a university student in 1994. Always keeping a notebook on hand wherever she went, she wrote down the recipes of the dishes she tasted. Based on her knowledge of Sichuan cuisine (菜肴), Dunlop published her first book, Sichuan Cookery, in 2001. Since then she has published four books about Sichuan cuisine, and one in 2016 about recipes (配方) from Jiangnan called Land of Fish and Rice. Now, a Chinese version (版本) of Land of Fish and Rice translated by He Yujia, is available. In the book, Dunlop displays her profound understanding of the food culture that runs deep in the blood of Chinese people. Having studied Chinese food culture for nearly two decades, she regards the Jiangnan area as the heartland of the nation’s gastronomy. “Although you have really interesting and delicious food all over China, in this area, particularly, people wrote about it and discussed it. Many of the old classic food books came from this area, for example. So, if you talk about gastronomy and not just about good food, then Jiangnan is a really important area,” she says. Dunlop spent 10 years researching the book. The decisive moment was in 2008 when she went to Longiing Caotang, a restaurant in Hangzhou, where the whole approach to ingredients, seasoning, cooking and tradition was so moving and impressive that, at that moment, she decided to write a book about the area, she says. By then, she had published three books about Sichuan and Hunan cuisine, both of which are famous for being spicy. But in Hangzhou and Yangzhou, she encountered food that was calm, peaceful, soothing and delicate. “Jiangnan food is connected with Chinese literature. Lots of dishes have quite literary names or stories behind them,” she says. As a result, when introducing food in the book, besides tracing the history of the dishes, she also tells stories like how Su Dongpo invented Dongpo Pork in the 11th century. After collecting all the recipes, Dunlop tested them at her home in London to make sure they worked for people in the West. 37.What greatest thing does Fuchsia Dunlop find about Chinese food? Personality is the pattern of feelings, thoughts and behavior shown through people’s lives. It makes them different from others. Each person’s personality is made up of different personality characters such as kindness or shyness. These characters decide how people behave in different situations. For example, if someone shy is served the wrong meal in a restaurant, he probably won’t say anything. On the other hand, someone outgoing will probably complain and get the meal he ordered. Where does your personality come from? The human brain is like a computer because it controls the human body just as a computer controls a robot. However, humans aren’t robots! We have personalities. The human brain has a special part giving us personality and allowing us to think for ourselves, unlike a computer. This part of the brain is called the mind. Personality types Clearly scientists cannot study the mind by looking inside someone’s brain! All they would see is blood and grey matter. To study the mind, scientists have to study human behavior. This includes watching people carefully and organizing personality tests like this one: 1. Do you think you’re pretty or good-looking? 2. Would you rather read a book or go to a party? 3. Do you have a large group of friends or just one or two close friends? 4. Do you mind talking in public or does it scare you? 5. Are you messy or neat? 6. Do you plan your work well or do you do things at the last minute? Scientists believe that answers to these types of questions tell us something about a person’s personality characters. After asking thousands of people thousands of questions, they’ve found that some personality characters seem to go together. This has led scientists to believe that there’re certain personality types. For example, shy people are often quiet. They have an introverted (内向的) personality type. The opposite is an extroverted (外向的) personality type — people who are outgoing, talkative and like being around other people. 66.What is personality? 67.Why is the human brain like a computer? 68.How do scientists study human behavior? 69.How many personality types are mentioned in this passage? 70.What decides your personality?(请自拟一句话作答) 【答案】66.Personality/It is the pattern of feelings, thoughts and behavior shown through people’s lives. 67.Because it controls the human body just as a computer controls a robot. 68.It includes watching people carefully and organizing personality tests. 69.Two./2. 70.The mind decides one’s personality.(言之成理即可) 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了人的性格。 66.根据原文“Personality is the pattern of feelings, thoughts and behavior shown through people’s lives.”可知,性格是通过人们的生活表现出来的感情、思想和行为的模式。故填Personality/It is the pattern of feelings, thoughts and behavior shown through people’s lives. 67.根据原文“The human brain is like a computer because it controls the human body just as a computer controls a robot”可知,人脑就像一台电脑,因为它控制着人体,就像电脑控制着机器人一样。故填Because it controls the human body just as a computer controls a robot. 68.根据原文“To study the mind, scientists have to study human behavior. Directed by 41-year-old Jia Ling, the movie tells the story of a woman tired of the world, finding herself and learning to love life through boxing (拳击). The name of YOLO is short for the movie’s main idea—you only live once. D British gourmet (美食家) Fuchsia Dunlop’s posts on WeChat are fun to read. A.People can cook Chinese food in different ways. B.She can eat food that is both delicious and healthy C.She can learn how to cook delicious food for the English. D.In China, there are many different cuisines in different places. 38.The underlined words “the book” in Paragraph 8 refer to ________. 70.What decides your personality?(请自拟一句话作答) 八、作文(满分20分) 71.根据要求完成英语短文写作,请将英语短文写在答题卡指定的位置上。 榜样的力量是巨大的。作为中学生,相信我们都有自己的榜样。下周学校英语俱乐部将举行“主题征文”活动,请你根据表格信息提示用英文写一篇短文投稿。 我的好榜样 谁是我的好榜样? 为什么是我的好榜样? 这个好榜样给我带来什么影响?
