It is still used today in some places to move water from low places to high places. This invention influenced Leonardo da Vinci as he worked on developing the functioning flying machine.

C.joined in; has been in D.joined; has been in
【答案】D
【详解】句意:Nick的兄弟在2011年加入了海军部队,自从那时他就已经在海军部队了。
考查一般过去时和现在完成时。join加入,加入某一组织并成为其中一员;join in加入,加入活动,根据第一个空后面的the navy可知,应该是join,排除B和C,由since then可知,应该用现在完成时,且动词要用延续性动词,join是瞬间动词,延续性动词是be in,所以应该用has been in,排除A,故选D。
14.Spacecraft _________ made ________ possible for humans to research ________ the universe.
A.have; it; to B.has; that; of C.have; it; into D.has; that; for
【答案】C
【详解】句意:宇宙飞船已经使得人类对于宇宙的研究成为可能。
考查主谓一致和固定句型。spacecraft意为“宇宙飞船”,单复数同形,此处根据语境应为复数,所以第一空用have;根据“make it+形容词+for sb to do sth”结构中it为形式宾语可知,第二空用it;根据“research into”意为“进行……的研究”。故选C。
15.—Did you buy her the cell phone as a birthday present?
—_________. She said she would return it to me when she could afford on her own.
A.Not exactly B.No doubt C.My pleasure D.With pleasure
【答案】A
【详解】句意:——你给她买了手机作为生日礼物吗?——不完全是这样。她说她能自己支付得起时会还给我的。
考查情景交际。Not exactly不完全是这样;No doubt毫无疑问;My pleasure不客气,我的荣幸;With pleasure愿意效劳。根据“she would return it to me when she could afford on her own”可知,说这部手机是礼物不完全正确,因为她有钱自己买后还会归还,用Not exactly表示对方的说法不准确。故选A。

Do you know who was described as “superhuman” by the great inventor and astronomer Galileo? It was Archimedes who solved the king’s problem of the golden crown while taking a bath. He was perhaps one of the most outstanding scientists in the world. He was born on the island of Sicily in the city of Syracuse around the year 287 BC and died in 212 BC.
Archimedes showed great love for mathematics. He made many discoveries. For example, he determined the exact value of pi (π) . He invented and developed methods similar to calculus and used them to find the area of a circle and an accurate estimation of the value of pi.

Today Archimedes is considered one of the greatest mathematicians in history. He used his mathematical skills and talents to create useful inventions to solve practical problems. One of his most famous inventions is called the Archimedes’ Screw. It was a device that could lift water to higher levels. One of its first uses was to pump water out from a leaking ship. It is still used today in some places to move water from low places to high places. This invention influenced Leonardo da Vinci as he worked on developing the functioning flying machine.
Can you imagine counting the sand in the universe? Archimedes once tried to calculate the number of sand grains in the universe. Obviously, it was impossible, but he was too smart. Li Qingzhao (1084-1155) was one of the best-known women writers in Chinese history. She showed great love for writing and was known as a special woman then. But her life was a bittersweet (苦乐参半的) story.
Li was born into a literary family. Her father collected a lot of books, and she was able to receive a good education in her childhood. Her early poems showed her innocence (单纯), good mind and love of nature. Li was someone who always wanted to destroy old customs (摧毁旧习俗) from the start. Women in the Song Dynasty stayed indoors. They didn’t discuss politics (政治), and only spoke when spoken to. But just at the age of 17, Li Qingzhao made a name for herself.

They were not rich, but they lived happily together. They shared a love of poetry and often wrote poems for each other. They collected many books. They even sold clothes and went hungry to build up a big library.
This happy life ended because of war. Fighting between the Song Dynasty and the Jurchens (女真族) took place in Shandong and their house was burned. The couple took many of their books and ran away to Nanjing, where they lived for a year. Zhao Mingcheng died in 1129, leaving her alone. Li never recovered ( 恢 复) from sadness. Continuing alone, she arrived at Hangzhou in 1132, where she died in 1155.
