But what killed Facebook for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “likes” it had got. His question was a wake-up call. “Likes” are signs of acceptance and approval. I had forgotten that acceptance and approval need to come from within and had unknowingly set him a bad example. Before absorbed in Facebook, I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines. I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone calls. To set a healthier example to my son, I deactivated my Facebook account. I’d been in the habit of checking Facebook many times a day, so I had to come up with some new habits. I carried a novel and a crossword puzzle book around with me. I rediscovered knitting. I went to the gym to take yoga classes. I started to remember a few things. My body is fine just the way it is. I have friends who will help me out when I’m in trouble, and I will help them out. I do my best to be a good mother, and our son is happy and healthy. We are very lucky to be able to afford two vacations a year. I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone. I felt completely present in the moment. The break left me feeling better about myself, my family, my home and my life. After a few weeks, I returned to Facebook. Now I look at the photos of my friends’ kids growing up and treasure how social media allows me to keep in touch with family. I no longer have the desire to post updates often. It is not an addiction any more. 41. What made the author begin to realize she should do something to control her time on Facebook? A. Her poor health. B. Her son’s question. C. Her not receiving “likes”. D. Her mother’s phone call. 42. The underlined word “deactivate” in Paragraph 5 probably means ________. A. to close B. to update C. to keep D. to check 43. But lots of vegetables grow well without much sun. The Rodale Institute in Pennsylvania published a report about this subject some years ago in its magazine Organic Gardening. The report said many different kinds of foods, from blueberries to beans, can be grown in the shade. Some vegetables do need a lot of sun. A vegetable crop expert at the University of Maine advised putting these vegetables where they can get from eight to ten hours of sunlight a day. Tomatoes, melons, squash and peppers are among those that need the most sun. Plants that produce root crops, such as carrots and beets, need from six to eight hours of sunlight every day. But leafy vegetables, such as lettuce and spinach, need only six hours of sunlight a day. The Rodale Institute says a garden should be planned carefully especially if you grow different kinds of foods. For example, rows of vegetables should be planted in an east-west direction. That way, as the sun passes overhead, all the plants will receive an equal amount of light. This is especially important when the plants grow to different heights. Nut trees such as filbert, hazelnut and yellowhorn produce well with only sun in the morning. Some fruits also do well without a lot of sunlight. In the United States, blueberries, raspberries, and several kinds of pears need only a little sun each day. In Asia, the hard y kiwi grows well in the shade. Many herbs grow well without much sun. Mint plants, for example, grow well in the shade. So do sage, dill, oregano, borage, chamomile and several kinds of thyme. Mr Brown, the owner of a garden seed company warned against removing shade trees. He cut down all his shade trees to provide more sun for his crops. But then he had to protect his summer lettuce from the heat of the sun by hanging a piece of cloth to provide shade. Instead of cutting trees, he suggested putting plants that need a lot of sunlight, such as tomatoes, in containers. That way they can be moved as the sun moves. 46. Rows of vegetables should be planted in an east-west direction so that the plants can . A. grow to the same height B. share the same amount of light C. grow well in the shade D. get enough water 47. Which kind of plant should NOT be grown in the shade? A. Blueberries. B. Beans. C. Sage. D. Tomatoes. 48. According to Mr Brown what is a good way to provide more sun for crops in his garden? A. Cutting down all shade trees. B. Hanging a piece of cloth to provide shade. C. Removing the leafy vegetables. D. Putting plants which need a lot of sunlight in containers. 49. What’s the purpose of writing the passage? A. To advise farmers to plant crops in the sun. B. To explain why not all plants need much sunshine. C. To show that farmers should choose suitable places for different plants. D. To introduce the procedure of growing plants. 50. What is the text most likely taken from? A. A science magazine. B. A newspaper. C. A government report. D. A story book. 46. B 47. D 48. D 49. C 50. That way, as the sun passes overhead, all the plants will receive an equal amount of light. 根据第三段关键句“Tomatoes, melons, squash and peppers are among those that need the most sun. 根据最后一段内容“Instead of cutting trees, he suggested putting plants that need a lot of sunlight, such as tomatoes, in containers. That way they can be moved as the sun moves. 通读全文,结合第五段关键句“The Rodale Institute says a garden should be planned carefully especially if you grow different kinds of foods. 通读全文,结合第一段内容“Farmers often feel they need a lot of sunshine to produce a good crop. I don’t believe there is one universal definition (普遍定义) of happiness. Happiness is a very subjective (主观的) emotion, according to me. Put two people in identical situation: same amount of money, life experiences, etc. and you can be pretty sure that they both wouldn’t feel equally happy or equally sad. I believe this is so because there are two kinds of happiness. There is one kind of happiness, which is kind of universal and then there is the other kind, which is very individual to each one of us. It is this kind of happiness that I find more interesting. The second kind of happiness that I talk about comes from our expectations out of our lives, which vary from person to person. For example, a person who expects a lot out of his or her life may find that happiness is hard to find. They are constantly in search of these things in life, which always seem to elude them. Those things may be money or fame or power or any of the other pursuits (追求) that humans have, but it would be likely that such people are less likely to be happy, if their goals are not met. In most cases, even after their goals are met, they don’t find happiness, because they seek more — new goals, new wish lists, and it’s a seemingly never-ending process for them! On the other hand, a person who takes life as it comes along and makes the best of each day is more likely to be happy every day. They have no pressure or goals to occupy their minds and they can achieve happiness from the simple pleasures of everyday life, finding love, making time for the family and kids, seeing their kids grow, etc. Of course, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have any expectations at all. You should keep those expectations reasonable and manageable. 51. Which of the following is the author’s opinion according to Paragraph 1? A. Happiness has only one universal definition. B. Every individual has his own happiness. C. There are no people who are really happy. D. Happiness means having money and power. 52. What does the underlined part “these things” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to? A. Daily demands. B. Life experiences. C. Ideas about happiness. D. Expectations out of life. 53. Even if their goals are met, some people still don’t feel happy because . A. they gave too much for their goals B. they don’t know what happiness is C. they have new goals that need achieving D. they think sadness is a never-ending process 54. What kind of person is likely to be happy in the author’s opinion? A. He who has a lot of expectations. B. He who has no goals at all. C. He who has a great ambition or dream. D. He who can find fun from his daily life. 55. The author writes this passage mainly to tell readers . A the reasons for being happiness B. the importance of happiness C. to enjoy every day to the fullest D. to give up their dreams and be practical 【答案】51. B 52. D 53. C 54. D 55. I did not care about helping others, but only about my look, clothes, money and grades. One day, I was suddenly influenced by my neighbor, who is now in college, and ended up wanting to volunteer for others. He had so much fun with volunteering and told me that he felt extremely good after helping others. I hoped to get the same results, for I felt worthless everywhere then. I viewed almost everything in a negative way, and I figured I had to experience something that would make me appreciate things that I had. I volunteered at the nursing home for a year where my neighbor volunteered. I brought snacks, coffee and games for the elderly patients, talked to them while sharing snacks, and played games like chess and checkers with them. Because they were Koreans, they often had trouble communicating with the helpers who were hired to help them. I sometimes translated things for them and offered to be their translator whenever they needed help. By volunteering at the nursing home,I changed a lot. I realized how lucky I am to speak both Korean and English and that I should help other people learn Korean as well. I had learned many life lessons through volunteering. By helping others, I felt needed in society. Not only did it boost my confidence, but it also allowed others to benefit from it. Volunteering is a great opportunity to improve oneself, others, and the whole society. So if you ever have the chance, volunteer! It's something you won't regret 56. What kind of person was the author before volunteering? ( no more than 5 words) ______________________________________________________________________________ 57. Why did the author want to volunteer one day?( no more than 10 words) ______________________________________________________________________________ 58. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 4 mean? ( no more than 3 words) ______________________________________________________________________________ 60. What do you think of volunteering after reading the text? ( no more than 20 words) ______________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】56. She was a selfish person./She was selfish. 57. Because she wanted to experience some positive changes. 58. She offered to be their translator whenever they needed help. 59. Improve/Increase/Enhance/Raise. 60. I think volunteering not only helps those who need help, but also benefits the givers and the society. 根据第一段“I used to be a selfish girl and I only thought of myself.(我曾经是一个自私的女孩,我只考虑自己)”和第二段中“I viewed almost everything in a negative way, and I figured I had to experience something that would make me appreciate things that I had.(我几乎以消极的方式看待一切,我想我必须经历一些事情,让我珍惜我所拥有的一切)”可知,在做志愿者之前,作者是一个自私且消极的人。 She was a selfish person./She was selfish. 根据第二段“One day, I was suddenly influenced by my neighbor, who is now in college, and ended up wanting to volunteer for others. He had so much fun with volunteering and told me that he felt extremely good after helping others. I hoped to get the same results, for I felt worthless everywhere then.(有一天,我突然受到了我的邻居的影响,他现在正在上大学,最后我想为别人做志愿者。他在志愿服务中得到了很多乐趣,他告诉我,在帮助别人之后,他感觉非常好。我希望得到同样的结果,因为那时我觉得自己在任何地方都毫无价值)”可知,作者受到作志愿者的邻居的影响,也想通过做志愿者得到乐趣,让自己感觉更好一些,所以想去当志愿者。故答案为Because she wanted to experience some positive changes. 根据第三段“Because they were Koreans, they often had trouble communicating with the helpers who were hired to help them. I sometimes translated things for them and offered to be their translator whenever they needed help.(由于他们是韩国人,他们经常与雇佣来帮助他们的助手沟通困难。我有时会为他们翻译一些东西,并在他们需要帮助的时候提供翻译)”可知,当老年患者与工作人员沟通有困难时,作者会为他们翻译东西,提供翻译服务。故答案为She offered to be their translator whenever they needed help. 划线词所在段介绍了志愿者工作给作者带来的积极影响,结合划线词所在句“Not only did it enhance my confidence, but it also allowed others to benefit from it.(这不仅enhance了我的信心,也让别人从中受益)”中“my confidence”可推知,志愿者工作“增强”了作者的自信心,enhance的意思是“增强,提高”,可用Improve/ Increase/Enhance/Raise来解释。故答案为Improve/ Increase/Enhance/Raise. I think volunteering not only helps those who need help, but also benefits the givers and the society. 参考词汇:展览exhibition;中国古代文化ancient Chinese culture;书法 calligraphy Dear Eric, ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Eric, Knowing that you have a strong passion for traditional Chinese culture, I’m writing to invite you to attend an exhibition themed “Ancient Chinese Culture”, which will be held in the museum. C. C Farmers often feel they need a lot of sunshine to produce a good crop. Tomatoes melons, squash and peppers are among those that need the most sun. Mint plants for example, grow well in the shade. A newspaper. C. A government report. D. A story book. D If you seek happiness, then you need to know what happiness is for you. C Ideas about happiness. A. the reasons for being happiness B. the importance of happiness C. to enjoy every day to the fullest D. to give up their dreams and be practical Ⅱ卷(共35分) 第四部分:(共2 小节; 满分35分) 第一节:阅读表达(满分10分) 阅读表达 I used to be a selfish girl and I only thought of myself.
