You mean I should put some fruits around to keep cats away? Are you kidding? W: It sounded ridiculous to me too. According to that article, cats really dislike the smell of oranges and lemons. You know how strong their peels smell, right? So, they can be used to frighten off cats. Why don’t you try it? Oranges and lemons are non-poisonous, so they won’t be harmful to animals or your garden. Maybe that actually works. M: Wow, Mia. Chinese use chopsticks to help themselves to almost everything except soup, but westerners use a knife and fork. When treating guests, Chinese tend to prepare more than the people can manage, while the westerners would just offer the amount they can manage. Furthermore, Chinese hosts and hostesses tend to show their hospitality by persuading the guests to have more and more; in contrast, the western hosts and hostesses will express their friendliness by saying “Help yourself.” Moreover, Chinese will insist on offering the guests food or drinks, even though the guests have had enough. The westerners will not go on giving offers if the guests say they have had enough. There are quite a number of differences between Chinese and Western ways of eating and I have just mentioned a few of them. A Explore the City: Well-Loved Parks in Springfield, MA Springfield’s change from a farming community to an industrial centre was hastened by the building of a factory in 1777, which supplied arms during the American Revolution. 根据后文“building of a factory in 1777, which supplied arms during the American Revolution.(斯普林菲尔德建成了一家工厂,为美国独立战争提供武器。)” Seuss Garden中的“The garden is a perfect destination for families and art lovers.(花园是家庭和艺术爱好者的理想目的地。)”和Robinson State Park中的“It also features several fantastic recreational facilities, including picnic areas, a playground, and a beach on the lake, which make it a popular destination for families.(它还具有几个梦幻般的娱乐设施,包括野餐区,一个游乐场和湖边的海滩,这使它成为一个受欢迎的家庭目的地。)” B Environmental management work between Rogart and Lairg has successfully been finished recently by Network Rail, on top of protecting nearby nesting hen harriers (筑巢的白尾鹞), a kind of bird of great European importance. The location of the work runs through the Strath Carnaig and Strath Fleet Moors SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and SPA (Special Protection Area). Both are special areas for supporting a population of breeding (繁殖的) hen harriers. Work necessary for the safe operation of the railway needed to be done at the same time as the breeding season so the work could have disturbed breeding harriers. But Network Rail’s ecology team worked with the Highland Raptor Study Group to conduct surveys of the hen harriers along the line. “It was a pleasure to work with Network Rail this spring and summer carrying out surveys along the line between Rogart and Lairg,” said Brian Etheridge, from the Highland Raptor Study Group. “The priority was to look for breeding hen harriers, a threatened bird of prey (猛禽).” Once breeding harriers had been identified, Network Rail put in place unique working procedures to reduce the influence on the birds. Measures were put in place to minimise (使减至最小) noise disturbance, through the use of battery-operated chainsaws (链锯), and time-limited working in any one area to keep noise to a minimum. Before any form of work could start, an additional survey was carried out to check on any nesting hen harriers in order to confirm whether the work was safe to continue. A camera was also installed to monitor nesting locations during the work to check that there were no signs of disturbance. Thanks to the efforts of Network Rail, three hen harrier chicks grew healthily in their nests near the worksite. A real success story for these protected birds. Jonathan Callis, Senior Asset Engineer for Network Rail, said, “We are delighted the care, professionalism and cooperation demonstrated by everyone who contributed to this project has resulted in such a successful outcome for the birds.” 24. What can we learn from paragraph 1? A. Rogart and Lairg are home to most hen harriers in the wild. B. The railway plays an important role in Europe. C. Hen harriers are protected species in Europe. D. The railway work has started recently. 25. What did the Highland Raptor Study Group do for Network Rail’s project? A. They designed a new kind of chainsaw for Network Rail. B. They surveyed the hen harriers nesting near the worksite. C. They often monitored the working procedures of Network Rail. D. They developed a practical way to change the breeding habits of hen harriers. 26. How did Network Rail’s effort turn out? A. It was a real success. B. It was limited and dangerous. C. It caused serious noise pollution. D. It guaranteed the safety of workers. 27. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To stress the importance of bird species in ecosystems. B. To show the influence of human activities on wildlife. C. To raise public awareness of wildlife protection. D. To report a wildlife protection event. C 25. B 26. A 27. 根据第一段中的“Environmental management work between Rogart and Lairg has successfully been finished recently by Network Rail, on top of protecting nearby nesting hen harriers (筑巢的白尾鹞), a kind of bird of great European importance. (英国国营铁路公司最近成功完成了Rogart和Lairg之间的环境管理工作,此外还保护了附近筑巢的 白尾鹞,这是一种在欧洲具有重要意义的鸟类。)”和“Both are special areas for supporting a population of breeding hen harriers (这两个地方都是援助繁殖期白尾鹞种群的特殊区域。)” 根据第二段中的“But Network Rail’s ecology team worked with the Highland Raptor Study Group to conduct surveys of the hen harriers along the line. (但是,Network Rail的生态团队与高地猛禽研究小组合作,沿着铁路线对白尾鹞进行了调查。)”和第三段中的“It was a pleasure to work with Network Rail this spring and summer carrying out surveys along the line between Rogart and Lairg(很高兴今年春天和夏天与Network Rail合作,在罗加特和莱尔格之间的线路上进行调查)”可知,Highland Raptor Study Group组织协助Network Rail公司调查施工路段附近的白尾鹞的情况。 根据最后一段中“Thanks to the efforts of Network Rail, three hen harrier chicks grew healthily in their nests near the worksite. A real success story for these protected birds和has resulted in such a successful outcome for the birds.(由于Network Rail的努力,三只白尾鹞幼鸟在工地附近的巢中健康成长。对于这些受保护的鸟类来说,这是一个真正的成功故事。这个结果对于鸟类来说是非常成功的。)”可知,Network Rail公司保护白尾鹞的努力取得了成功。故选A项。 C While for many a chef, serving up the fanciest (最优质的) and most delicious meals is the final aim, Rudolf Brand has an extra aim: fighting food waste. He believes that with his dishes, he can have a big influence on people’s way of thinking about food and food waste. With 22 years of experience, including Michelin-starred restaurants in London and Amsterdam, he has seen a lot of food wasted in his career. So what is the best way to stop this? For him, it really comes down to one important thing: “Rather than think about what you want to cook, look at the left things, what’s available (可利用的) , and then make a menu. This is what every chef should do.” He’s clear on his solution. “Lose that fanciness, and look at the quality of the product and the flavor (风味) ,” Rudolf explains. “There are too many chefs who are trying to make their dish too fancy. They want to have only the biggest sea fish. Or they make a dish with only the heart of the cabbage, only using the best leaves, and then they throw away the rest.” He shakes his head at the idea of such waste. He knows that one of his suppliers—a local farm—is left with a growing food mountain when top Michelin-starred chefs only buy the prized cuts of meat instead of ordering the whole leg. In just three or four weeks, the farm is left with 1,000 legs of lamb in the freezer. “And that’s just one supplier,” he says. While other chefs will only accept the best ingredients (原料) from their suppliers, if something is smaller or damaged or has a few black bits, Rudolf is still going to use it. “Just because I’ll accept produce of a slightly lower quality doesn’t mean I’m going to serve food of a less quality. It’s my job to turn that into good quality food on the plate,” he says. As a chef, he thinks he has a duty not only to cook delicious food, but also to reduce food waste. 28. What is Rudolf’s extra goal with his dishes? A. To create the fanciest meals ever. B. To educate the public on food waste. C. To encourage people to cook by themselves. D. To start a career in Michelin-starred restaurants. 29. What does Rudolf say about many chefs? A. They care too much about flavor. B. They are too choosy about ingredients. C. They satisfy customers’ needs to the full. D. They would like to try out new cooking methods. 30. What problem do food suppliers face according to Rudolf? A. They overproduce greatly. B. They struggle to win orders. C. They fail to store their products properly. D. They have many unwanted left ingredients. 31. Which of the following best describes Rudolf? A. Influential. B. Energetic. C. Poor. D. Responsible. B 29. B 30. D 31. 根据第一段“While for many a chef, serving up the fanciest (最优质的) and most delicious meals is the final aim, Rudolf Brand has an extra aim: fighting food waste. He believes that with his dishes, he can have a big influence on people’s way of thinking about food and food waste.(虽然对于许多厨师来说,提供最优质、最美味的饭菜是最终目标,但Rudolf Brand还有一个额外的目标:与食物浪费作斗争。他相信,通过他的菜肴,他可以对人们对食物和食物浪费的看法产生很大的影响。)”可知,Rudolf Brand做食物的额外目标是与食物浪费作斗争,他想通过自己做的食物来影响人们对食物和食物浪费的看法,由此可知,他想要教育公众关于食物浪费的问题。故选B。 【29题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“There are too many chefs who are trying to make their dish too fancy. They want to have only the biggest sea fish. Or they make a dish with only the heart of the cabbage, only using the best leaves, and then they throw away the rest.(有太多的厨师试图让他们的菜太花哨。他们只想吃最大的海鱼。或者他们只用卷心菜的心,只用最好的叶子做一道菜,然后把剩下的扔掉。)”可推测出,许多厨师对食材太过挑剔。故选B。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“He knows that one of his suppliers—a local farm—is left with a growing food mountain when top Michelin-starred chefs only buy the prized cuts of meat instead of ordering the whole leg. In just three or four weeks, the farm is left with 1,000 legs of lamb in the freezer.(他知道,当米其林星级厨师只购买珍贵的肉块而不是订购整条腿时,他的供应商之一——一家当地农场——留下了越来越多的食物山。在短短三到四周的时间里,农场的冰箱里就剩下了1000条羊腿。)”可知,由于米其林星级厨师只购买珍贵的肉块而不是整条羊腿,这导致供应商的农场里剩下了许多羊腿,由此可推测,食物供应商面临的问题是他们剩下了许多不被需要的食材。故选D。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Just because I’ll accept produce of a slightly lower quality doesn’t mean I’m going to serve food of a less quality. It’s my job to turn that into good quality food on the plate(仅仅因为我会接受质量稍低的农产品,并不意味着我会提供质量较低的食物。我的工作就是把它变成盘子里的优质食物)”和“As a chef, he thinks he has a duty not only to cook delicious food, but also to reduce food waste.(作为一名厨师,他认为自己不仅有责任做美味的食物,还有责任减少食物浪费。)” D。 D For many of us, online shopping has made the process of purchasing goods a far simpler and more convenient process. No longer do we have to head to shops to browse through various objects, wandering round endless shelves, before finally setting for the first thing we saw. These days, we find the item we want or need online, click on it, and check out its description and, most importantly, its user reviews. If it fits the bill, we send it to our basket and pay. There seems to be a wealth of options at our fingertips. But how do we know the options that pop up in front of us really are the best deals, and how might algorithms (算法) help or hold us back? Algorithms, simply put, are mathematical instructions which tell a computer how to solve problems. When shopping is involved, what is the problem they solve? Well, they instruct a computer which advertisements to show and which products a user is most likely to buy. By analyzing the things we bought or looked at previously algorithms can predict what goods we’re most likely to be attracted by. For some people, the idea of something guessing your preferences could sound a bit worrying. But first, let’s look at the positives. By telling a computer to show us what we are interested in, it can not only save us a lot of time, but also help us find the best deals. However, there are some people who have concerns about the impact of algorithms on our shopping experience. It is possible that algorithms may only select options from a limited number of brands, or may favour products from certain companies. There are also concerns that we aren’t always shown the cheapest or best deal, even though that’s what we’re searching for. So, the takeaway from this is that algorithms are here to stay, and it’s wise to know they exist. Whenever you are shopping, be it online or off, make sure you shop around for the best deals. The first thing you see might not always be the best for you. 32. What is the main factor that leads you to buy the product online immediately? A. The reasonable price. B. Salesgirls’ description. C. Customers’ comments. D. The convenient delivery. 33. How do algorithms help customers find their favourite goods? A. The previous consuming records. B. The most advertisements they see. C. The frequency of visiting the store. D. The amount of money they spend. 34. What does the author think of algorithms used for online shopping? A. Doubtful. B. Beneficial. C. Negative. D. Worrying. 35. Which message does the author want to convey in the last paragraph? A. Many hands make light work. B. Actions speak louder than words. C. Only the feet tell if the shoes fit. D. Only comparing can see the gap. C 33. A 34. B 35. 根据第一段“No longer do we have to head to shops to browse through various objects, wandering round endless shelves, before finally setting for the first thing we saw. These days, we find the item we want or need online, click on it, and check out its description and, most importantly, its user reviews. If it fits the bill, we send it to our basket and pay.”(我们再也不用去商店浏览各种各样的商品,在无尽的货架上徘徊,最后才去买我们看到的第一件东西。 根据第三段“By analyzing the things we bought or looked at previously algorithms can predict what goods we’re most likely to be attracted by.”(通过分析我们之前买过或看过的东西,算法可以预测我们最有可能被什么商品吸引。) 故选A项。 根据第四段“But first, let’s look at the positives. By telling a computer to show us what we are interested in, it can not only save us a lot of time, but also help us find the best deals.”(但首先,让我们看看积极的一面。 根据最后一段“So, the takeaway from this is that algorithms are here to stay, and it’s wise to know they exist. Whenever you are shopping, be it online or off, make sure you shop around for the best deals. The first thing you see might not always be the best for you.”(所以,从这里得到的结论是,算法是存在的,知道它们的存在是明智的。 In many people’s eyes, plants are quiet and passive. They can’t talk. They can’t walk. ____36____. Or can they? A new BBC documentary series, The Green Planet, gives us a new look at plants. Released on January 10 on Bilibili, it uncovers the wonderful and dramatic ways that plants behave. Plants compete against each other to live. Each species has its own ways of defense. In rainforests, different kinds of plants race for sunlight. The forest floor is described as a “battlefield” in the series as only two percent of the sunlight filters (透过) through it. ____37____. But they are caught up in a vine (藤蔓) that tries to take a ride. Finally, they are both overtaken by a fast-growing balsa tree. As the balsa’s leaves are smooth, the vine can’t get a hold. Amy, Michael, and Justin were playing when Nana said, “I’m going to start planting my garden. Who wants to help me?” “What are going to plant, Nana?” asked Amy. “I like big, yellow sunflowers.” “I’m going to plant vegetables. That way we can have them to eat when they are ready,” said Nana. “How long does that take?” asked Michael. He liked vegetables sometimes, especially carrots. “It will take a few months before anything is ready to eat,” answered Nana. The children were surprised. “Months? Why would you do all that work and then have to wait so long?” asked Amy. “You should just go to the store and buy them.” “Patience, my sweeties! Don’t you know food always tastes best when you grow it yourself?” replied Nana. “And if all of you come to help, it won’t be too much work.” “I’ll help you, Nana,” offered Justin. He put down the soccer ball and went to look at the gardening tools Nana had laid out. “What do we do first?” Michael and Amy came over to look, too. Nana taught Justin how to use a trowel (小铲子) to dig small rows of holes for the seeds. Next, Nana showed Amy how to pour the seeds into each hole. And it was Michael’s job to cover up the holes with soil. Finally, Amy wrote the vegetable names on sticks that Justin pushed into the ground. “This way we can remember which vegetable seeds we have planted,” said Nana. When they had planted everything, the children took turns filling up the watering can so that Nana could make the soil nice and wet for the seeds to start to grow. “Now we just water them a little every day, and with some time and sunshine, we’ll have some delicious things to eat in the summer,” said Nana. Whenever the grandchildren came to visit, they would dash into the garden. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally, Nana said it was time for the first harvest. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Possible version1 : Whenever the grandchildren came to visit, they would dash into the garden. Not surprisingly, they were going to see how the garden was growing. After watering the vegetables, they would remove the weeds that popped up around the plants and apply organic fertilizer under Nana's instruction if necessary. As time went by, the plants were growing taller and stronger. When they noticed the vegetables flowering and producing fruits, their eyes were sparkling like diamonds. Never had they looked forward to summer like this before. But they clearly knew that it's worthwhile to wait for the inviting results. Finally, Nana said it was time for the first harvest. Hearing that, the children all jumped into the air and cheers filled the whole garden. Nana gave them each baskets and, together they gathered some of the cucumbers, carrots and tomatoes, which were turned into delicacies. “Who wants to help eat this fresh salad?” Nana asked. “Me!” everyone responded loudly. Tasting the salad, they thought nothing could be more delicious, because it was they who grew these vegetables. They all learned that many hands make light work and patience really pays off. Possible version 2 : Whenever the grandchildren came to visit, they would dash into the garden. Eager to help grow the vegetables well, they first took turns to water the plants. Then Nana showed them which plants needed trimming or which needed tying up to grow tall and straight. Day after day, spring turned into summer and finally, the plants started revealing their colorful secrets. The children were thrilled to see the tomatoes turning red, the cucumbers hiding under the green leaves and the peppers growing bigger. Not until then did they realize that Nana was right-- all they needed was patience. Finally, Nana said it was time for the first harvest. With baskets ready, Nana and the children started out on their business. Nana took them around the garden and picked some tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and cabbages. Then for the following hour, they were busying making vegetable salad. The children helped wash the dirt off the food while Nana chopped up the vegetables. When Nana asked who wanted to try the fresh salad, everyone expressed their willingness excitedly. “OK. Amy, get the plates. Justin, get the water and cups, and Michael, get the forks. Let's celebrate the harvest!” 续写线索:冲进花园——看如何生长——照顾花园——开花结果——高兴 词汇激活 行为类 ①冲进:dash into /storm in ②除草:remove weeds/clean out weeds ③注意:notice/note/find 情绪类: ①骄傲地:loudly/with pride ②兴奋:jump into the air/ be up in the air 【点睛】[高分句型1]. B Environmental management work between Rogart and Lairg has successfully been finished recently by Network Rail, on top of protecting nearby nesting hen harriers (筑巢的白尾鹞), a kind of bird of great European importance. C While for many a chef, serving up the fanciest (最优质的) and most delicious meals is the final aim, Rudolf Brand has an extra aim: fighting food waste. D For many of us, online shopping has made the process of purchasing goods a far simpler and more convenient process. In many people’s eyes, plants are quiet and passive. They can’t talk. They can’t walk. ____36____. “Months? Why would you do all that work and then have to wait so long?” asked Amy “You should just go to the store and buy them.” “Patience, my sweeties! __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
