Years ago, I could not stick to exercising until I bought a CD called I Enjoy Exercise. I
listened to it every day. I bought the CD because I wanted to run in a race and hopefully win!
I had promised my 10-year-old son Todd that I would run in a race with him. Unfortunately,
however, when that race came about, his left leg was hurt in a car accident. Without him running
with me, although I took part in that race, yet I didn’t do quite well in it.
While Todd couldn’t run together with me because of his injury (受伤), he never forgot the
promise I made for him. He was always asking me whether I would keep my promise when he
recovered in the future. So I decided I was going to train and go all out to win the next race. What
I needed was motivation (动力). It happened that one of my friends mentioned the CD which he
liked very much, saying that he got a lot from the music in it when feeling down. So I bought it
and listened to it while exercising every day.
It was amazing what happened to my thinking as I listened to it daily. I started to think about
the repeated words on the CD — “I enjoy exercise”. Instead of dreading exercise, I was thinking,
“I enjoy exercise.”
I found out how important words are that we play in our minds every day. I went from a
person who seldom exercised to someone who started to exercise daily. Just think how our lives
will improve if we reflect on the uplifting and motivating words of the famous works. I have
found the positive messages have greatly improved my thinking and then changed my life.
How did I do in that race, you might be thinking? I actually won the gold medal in my age

Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He
moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends.
My earliest memories of my father are a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work
and his family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him. He seemed unhappy
with me unless got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as
“successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up
things to say, feeling on guard.
On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an
6
outdoor cafe. We talked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and
laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions Gone was my father’s critical (挑剔的 ) air and
strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to
be around? What had held him back before?
The next day dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his
own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to
him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so

For much of the past hundred years, classrooms have been designed with the teacher seated
in front of desks for students. But many educators now say children can do better in a less
structured environment.
Bob Pearlman works as an education advisor in the United States. He told The Associate
Press that traditional classrooms are a thing of the past. Now students work in ''enlarged learning
7
areas" that include project-planning rooms, workrooms, and laboratories, as well as learning
spaces for groups and individuals. Pearlman points to Albemarle County Public Schools, in
Charlottesville, Virginia. The school system invited teams from all its schools to develop learning
spaces that would help students deal with complex (复杂的) ideas and work on creative building
projects. Now, its primary school classes have exchanged traditional desks for things like soft
seating and connectable tables.
Another change to the design of classrooms is the ability to connect to the Internet.
" Classrooms, libraries, and laboratories used to be the only spaces where students spent their
school hours. Wireless, laptops and project learning have changed that," Pearlman said. He noted
that this has made all school spaces into possible enlarged learning areas.
David Thornburg, who wrote the book From the Campfire to the Holodeck, said Pearlman's
concept (概念 ) met the students' need. He said schools should provide spaces based on how
humans learn. That could mean one room is used in different ways at different times, or in
different ways at the same time.
Earp is with Teacher magazine, a publication of the nonprofit Australian Council for
Educational Research. She noted that in the 1970s, American Robert Sommer, a psychologist, was
urging a critical(批判性的 ) look at traditional classroom designs. Earp said that in addition to
newer "freeform" classroom designs, some teachers could find good results with designs that
combine new and old ideas. They could try lining up desks at the start of the year and then placing
them in groups as the classroom relationships become clearer and project work begins.
12. What change happened to Albemarle County Public Schools?
A. Studying time. B. Learning materials.
C. Teaching Strategy. D. Classroom furniture.
13. What does the underlined word "that" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The new design. B. The existing classroom.
C. The application of the Internet. D. The limitation on learning spaces.
14. What' s David' s attitude towards Pearlman' s classroom design?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful.
C. Uncaring. D. Disagreeing.
15. What’s the ideal classroom in Earp's eyes?
8
A. It should be designed by teachers.
B. It should offer freedom to students.
C. It should combine modern and traditional ideas.
D. It should offer comfortable learning environment.
