Passage 1【主题:人与社会 礼仪与规则】
When I was a little girl,I had an etiquette(礼节) class in my primary school.I clearly remember the first class. All of us entered the classroom without desks or chairs. We stood in the classroom, looking at the teacher quietly. She smiled and handed each of us a book. She taught us some etiquette and rules.I couldn't understand the meanings of those rules or the reason why I should follow them, because I was only six.
When I became a little older,I learned more etiquette and rules.I also slowly realized the importance of etiquette and rules, because they had something to do with my life. They told me I needed to treat people with politeness and kindness. When I met teachers,I first greeted them. When I was at home,I would try doing some chores to help my parents. When I was in public,I should try not to influence others.
Some students still don't understand the meanings of rules and they think lots of people never follow the rules without serious results. But I think that etiquette and rules are important in our daily life, because they help us to build good relationships with others. Therefore,it is important to learn and follow the etiquette and rules,no matter how old we are.

When the teacher asks a question in class,Wang Xiaobin never raises his hand and this situation is very common at middle schools. This 15yearold boy always waits for other classmates or the teacher to give the answer.“What if my answer is wrong?” Wang asks.
Wang said only six or seven students in his class raise their hands when a question is asked.“I think it is a problem that may affect(影响) our studies, but I am afraid of making mistakes in front of my classmates,”he said.
When we asked the teacher,Hu Wei,why the students didn't raise their hands,he said,“They lack(缺乏) of confidence. They are afraid of showing off,or they're afraid of losing face by giving wrong answers.”To encourage students to raise their hands in class,Hu suggests that teachers should repeat the question, then try to guide and encourage students to offer their answers.Hu also advises students not to be shy,but brave enough to try.
Sun Pin,16 of Fujian, always raises her hand as soon as she comes up with the answer, even if she isn't sure she has got it right.Sun can't understand why some of her classmates keep silent in class. She enjoys raising her hand a lot.“It keeps me active and confident to express my idea,” Sun said.“Raising my hand has really made me excellent.”

Passage 3【主题:人与社会 团队合作】
Teamwork is important for the success of any company or organization. We may easily forget that the team is made up of individuals(个体).Everyone in the team plays an important role.To be honest,no team can win if everyone doesn't put his or her effort into the team.
Not everyone is the same in any team. Some members are more careful to watch out for small things.Others may be good at coming up with new ideas, which can make the team develop faster. It's clear that everyone has his or her values.
Sports teams are perfect examples. Many players working together can achieve much more than one player alone. For example, you may not be the best goal scorer, but you're great at moving the ball forward. You know that if you pass that ball to the person who can score, the team will have a better chance of winning.Everyone in the team plays a different role according to his or her strong points.
Therefore,if you want to be a good teammate, make sure you can understand the group's goals.Ask key questions like “Why are we here? What roles and responsibilities will each of us have...” When you communicate with your team members,it's important to stay understanding.

Passage 5【主题:人与自我 激发创造性】
Creativity comes from imagination. When you imagine a new way of doing something and then take action to do it,you are being creative.Generally, there are three steps to be creative.
Step 1 Getting knowledge and skills of how things are done.
Strong knowledge and skills help you understand how to do something.Knowing when and how to apply(运用) this knowledge comes from studying how others deal with the same situation.Think about learning to play the piano. In this step, you learn how to read music and where the keys are on the piano. You also practice playing.
Step 2 Learning to copy the way that people do those things.
Practicing how others do something will bring what you have learned.Repeating other people's skills will create a lot of experience and increase understanding. So your next step in playing the piano would be seeing how other good musicians play, and copying their songs and styles of playing.
Step 3 Exploring new and maybe better ways of doing things.
Knowing the rules, and then using or breaking them in your own style is the basic creativity. At this point in playing the piano, you are experimenting with your own styles of playing;you might play songs in new ways;or even write your own songs and music.Sometimes you need to be brave enough to try new things.
Being creative is a useful ability to help solve problems in many different situations.Being able to come up with new ideas will make your life more successful, more enjoyable. So start being creative!

Passage 6【主题:人与自我 传统美德】
Patience is widely considered a traditional virtue(美德) deeply grounded in Chinese culture.Since ancient times, there have been a lot of sayings about being patient. For example, one popular expression says,“A little impatience spoils great plans.”
Patience is a virtue, but it can also be a good medicine. At present,we are living in an age where we expect immediate satisfaction from everything.Packages(包) must be sent within 2 or 3 days, and takeaway food needs to arrive within 30 minutes. In this case, people who are patient enjoy fewer bad feelings, feel less stressed, and are more satisfied with their lives. In order to improve our patience,we need to learn four things.Firstly, start small.Becoming more patient is a journey, and we can start it with small steps.Cleaning up our rooms may be a good start.Next, know the triggers(诱因),which will help us better hold the situation the next time when we are impatient.Thirdly, accept what we can't change.A lot of times, the feeling of impatience happens because we want something to change quickly.Practicing acceptance can help us feel at peace in bad situations while we wait for that change to happen.Last but not least, slow things down at the right time. Not every activity needs to be done hurriedly.Try enjoying the process instead of rushing off to do another task.
Just as the English saying goes,“All good things come to those who wait.” Be patient while we learn patience!
