M: Yes, Jenny. Sometimes we need to stay home and have a good rest after hard schoolwork. I want days when I need soft music to make me feel relaxed. I also enjoy playing around.
W: But you can do those things after school or on the weekend.
M: You know, I have to do schoolwork and read books as well.
W: Well, I don’t think schools should give students days off for their mental health.
M: Why?
W: Having too many days off can affect our study and even our life. And many students’ parents like mine have to go to work. If students get too many days off, they might be at home alone too much. This could make some students’ mental health issues worse.
M: But some students have serious mental health challenges. How can they get help?
W: I do think a mental health lecture can play a vital role in students’ daily life and help to protect them from mental illness.
M: That sounds like a good idea.

B
My husband is more a kid at heart. He insists we find gifts for the grandkids while on a trip to Savannah.
I can be a kid at heart, too, but I also can be a mathematician — and even cheap, ugly gifts add up quickly when you have 11 grandkids.
Children like gifts and they want them. So we are digging through piles of cheap key fobs (钥匙链), plastic sun hats, chocolate treats that will melt in the heat, and funny T-shirts, finding nothing.
We go with two hats for the boys but are still empty-handed for the nine girls. Then I spot small bracelets (手链) in a rainbow of colors. He turns one over a couple of times and says, “Nice.”
The bracelets are made of small balls shaped like starfish and turtles. They all look like rock candy, which can be eaten and was popular when we were kids. We buy nine and make a mental note: tell the girls not to eat them.
As the clerk wraps the bracelets, I remember a gift I had as a girl. Once we could choose one thing in a shop to remember our trip. What I selected was a blue plastic soapbox with the lid (盖子) and topped with a pink flamingo (火烈鸟). It was cheap and tacky (俗气的) and I believed it was the loveliest thing a girl could own. It was too beautiful to put soap inside, so it sat in a dresser drawer year after year, slowly aging, yellowing, as a reminder of a family trip long ago.
The girls are married and have families of their own, and those gifts are still in the dresser drawers in their old bedrooms, but I have came to realize that every gift may have its worth and value, saying we are together even though we were apart. That’s always a good deal.
20.Why did the author say she was a mathematician?
A.Because their family was not rich enough to buy gifts.
B.Because she was good at choosing gifts for kids.
C.Because she ever studied mathematics in university.
D.Because she found it expensive to buy 11 gifts.
21.How are the gifts for the grandkids?
A.Shiny and costly. B.Foreign and attractive.
C.Beautiful and ordinary. D.Useful and cheap.
22.What did the gifts for the girls remind the author of?
A.The great family memories. B.The experience in giving gifts.
C.The best gift she ever had. D.The trip when she fell in love.
23.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Good reminders of our life. B.How to choose gifts for kids.
C.The meaning of a gift. D.What to expect on a family trip.
根据第二段“I can be a kid at heart, too, but I also can be a mathematician — and even cheap, ugly gifts add up quickly when you have 11 grandkids.”(我的内心也可以是一个孩子,但我也可以是一个数学家——当你有11个孙辈时,即使是廉价、丑陋的礼物也会迅速累积起来。)
根据第三段“So we are digging through piles of cheap key fobs (钥匙链), plastic sun hats, chocolate treats that will melt in the heat, and funny T-shirts, finding nothing.”(因此,我们在成堆的廉价钥匙扣、塑料遮阳帽、会在高温下融化的巧克力和有趣的T恤衫中搜寻,一无所获。),第四段“We go with two hats for the boys but are still empty-handed for the nine girls. ”(我们给男孩们戴了两顶帽子,但对九个女孩来说仍然两手空空。)和第五段“The bracelets are made of small balls shaped like starfish and turtles. They all look like rock candy, which can be eaten and was popular when we were kids. We buy nine and make a mental note: tell the girls not to eat them.”(手镯是由海星和海龟形状的小球制成的。
根据第六段中“As the clerk wraps the bracelets, I remember a gift I had as a girl. Once we could choose one thing in a shop to remember our trip. What I selected was a blue plastic soapbox with the lid (盖子) and topped with a pink flamingo (火烈鸟). It was cheap and tacky (俗气的) and I believed it was the loveliest thing a girl could own.”(当店员把手镯包起来时,我想起了我小时候收到的一份礼物。
根据第一段“My husband is more a kid at heart. He insists we find gifts for the grandkids while on a trip to Savannah.”(我丈夫内心更像个孩子。 和最后一段“The girls are married and have families of their own, and those gifts are still in the dresser drawers in their old bedrooms, but I have came to realize that every gift may have its worth and value, saying we are together even though we were apart. That’s always a good deal.”(女孩们都结婚了,有了自己的家庭,这些礼物仍然放在她们旧卧室的梳妆台抽屉里,但我逐渐意识到,每一份礼物都可能有其价值,我说即使我们分开了,我们也在一起。这总是一笔不错的交易。)可知,文章讲述了作者和丈夫给孙子孙女挑选纪念品时的感悟:廉价和俗气的礼物也有其价值,所以这篇文章讲述了“礼物的意义”。故选C。

Many studies have shown that drinking plenty of water a day is good for our health. People are paying careful attention to that advice, and millions of people choose to buy bottled water to drink. Unfortunately, many of these plastic water bottles are being thrown away. It can take centuries for these bottles to break down.
For the last several years, three designers from Imperial College in London, England, have been working to address the problem of plastic bottles. The team’s goal is to “make packaging waste disappear”. To achieve that goal, these designers have developed a unique product called Ooho.
Believe it or not, the Ooho is several small mouthfuls of water wrapped in a golf-ball-sized bubble (泡泡). You can make a hole in its skin and drink the water out of it. You can also throw the entire bubble in your mouth — no bottle needed! Ooho’s skin is made from seaweed (海草). It is nearly tasteless and easy for the body to take in. If people would rather not eat it, however, the skin can be thrown away. In less than a month, it will break down completely.
The skin is very affordable to make. First a ball of water is frozen in a special chemical solution Next, it is put in a solution made of brown seaweed. Each bubble costs less than two cents to make. It is, therefore, a far cheaper replacement for plastic bottles.
The three designers have been figuring out the flaws and searching for possible solutions. For example, the Ooho is great if someone just wants a single mouthful of water. But what if the person is especially thirsty and wants more? They are exploring the idea of making bigger bubbles and also searching for a way to connect several bubbles together. Another problem with the product has been how to transport it in packaging that is safe for the environment but still protects the bubbles from breaking.
To find out if people are interested in Ooho, the designers have plans in place to hand out their bubbles next year at sporting events like marathons, as well as at entertainment sites. If Ooho becomes popular, people across the country may soon find themselves eating their water instead of drinking it!
24. The author writes the first paragraph to ________.
A. answer a question B. express an opinion
C. present a problem D. provide an example
25. What is Ooho?

根据第一段“Unfortunately, many of these plastic water bottles are being thrown away. It can take centuries for these bottles to break down.(不幸的是,许多塑料水瓶都被扔掉了。这些瓶子可能需要几个世纪才能分解)”可推知,作者写第一段是为了呈现一个问题,即塑料要很长时间才能分解。故选C。
25题;细节理解题。根据第三段“Believe it or not, the Ooho is several small mouthfuls of water wrapped in a golf-ball-sized bubble (泡泡).(信不信由你,Ooho就是几口水包裹在一个高尔夫球大小的泡泡里)”可知,Ooho是泡泡里的水。
根据倒数第二段“For example, the Ooho is great if someone just wants a single mouthful of water. But what if the person is especially thirsty and wants more? They are exploring the idea of making bigger bubbles and also searching for a way to connect several bubbles together. Another problem with the product has been how to transport it in packaging that is safe for the environment but still protects the bubbles from breaking.(例如,如果有人只想要一口水,Ooho就很棒。但如果这个人特别渴,想要更多呢?他们正在探索制造更大气泡的想法,同时也在寻找一种将几个气泡连接在一起的方法。该产品的另一个问题是如何用对环境安全的包装运输,同时仍能保护气泡不破裂)”可知,这三个设计师一直都在找出这个产品的缺点,并寻找解决办法。由此可知,划线词flaws的意思是“缺点”,和weaknesses意思相近。故选D。
27题;主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第三段“Believe it or not, the Ooho is several small mouthfuls of water wrapped in a golf- ball- sized bubble (泡泡). You can make a hole in its skin and drink the water out of it. The world is being alerted to the possibility of a severe drought crisis caused by the recent heatwave that has affected much of Asia and the arrival of El Niño, which can cause intense drought for 2 − 3 years, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Varawut Silpa-archa has warned.
Thailand is susceptible (易受影响的) to the effects of El Niño, which is forecast to start in June. The world is expected to face an intense drought due to the occurrence of El Niño, leading to reduced rainfall during the rainy season, or possibly no rain at all.
In addition to the ongoing drought, Thailand is also facing another unprecedented (前所未有的) phenomenon, the so-called “Monster Asian heatwave”. This extreme heatwave underlined growing global warming concerns and has made it even more important to recognise the need to reduce plastic wastes and industrial air pollutants. There is no quick fix, however. Because we have been worsening the environment for many decades, it will take many years of intensive efforts to tackle the global warming problem.
“Preparing to deal with the severe drought crisis for the next 2 − 3 years is urgent,” Varawut stressed. In the past, Bangkok has experienced flooding and a rising sea level due to the melting of the polar ice caps. If the situation worsens beyond the current level, the El Niño issue will become even more severe in the next 2 − 3 years.
Solutions to this problem include building more reservoirs (水库) and expanding the waterways to accommodate rainfall during this rainy season. Although this year’s dry season is a concern, there are still adequate water reserves in the dams. However, the situation is expected to worsen next year and in 2025. Therefore, sufficient water storage facilities and efficient farmland irrigation system are vital preparations.
“Whether the issue of climate change will lead to the collapse of our world, or not, is still up in the air. We may not have reached that stage yet but if we do not speed up efforts to tackle this issue seriously, we may face a loss of biodiversity,” Varawut said.
28.What are the two main factors of the possible drought crisis?
A.Flooding and sea level rising. B.Extreme heat and the El Niño.
C.Melting polar ice caps and plastic waste. D.Industrial air pollutants and global warming.
29.What does the underlined phrase “quick fix” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Good result. B.Big decision. C.Easy solution. D.Perfect excuse.
30.How should the drought crisis be solved according to Varawut?
A.By reducing plastic waste.
B.By expanding more farmland.
C.By increasing the amount of rainfall.
D.By constructing enough water storage facilities.
31.Which statement will Varawut probably agree with?
A.The collapse of the world is on the way.
B.The loss of biodiversity is not a major concern.
C.The effects of climate change are still uncertain.
D.Efforts to address climate change need to be sped up.
根据第一段“The world is being alerted to the possibility of a severe drought crisis caused by the recent heatwave that has affected much of Asia and the arrival of El Niño, which can cause intense drought for 2 − 3 years, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Varawut Silpa-archa has warned.”(自然资源和环境部长Varawut Silpa-archa警告说,由于最近影响亚洲大部分地区的热浪和厄尔尼诺的到来,世界正在警惕可能发生严重干旱危机的可能性,这可能导致2 - 3年的严重干旱。)
根据下文“Because we have been worsening the environment for many decades, it will take many years of intensive efforts to tackle the global warming problem.”(由于几十年来我们一直在恶化环境,因此解决全球变暖问题将需要多年的努力。)
根据第五段“Solutions to this problem include building more reservoirs (水库) and expanding the waterways to accommodate rainfall during this rainy season.”(解决这个问题的办法包括建造更多的水库和扩大水道以适应雨季的降雨。)和“Therefore, sufficient water storage facilities and efficient farmland irrigation system are vital preparations.”(因此,充足的蓄水设施和高效的农田灌溉系统是至关重要的准备工作。)
根据最后一段Varawut所说的话“We may not have reached that stage yet but if we do not speed up efforts to tackle this issue seriously, we may face a loss of biodiversity.”(我们可能还没有达到这个阶段,但如果我们不加快努力认真解决这个问题,我们可能会面临生物多样性的损失。)

The First Kite
Kites have been around for thousands of years. The first kites were created in China. There are three stories about how the first kite was born.
Many people believe that the kite was created when people watched birds fly. They then attempted to make a light object shaped like a bird that could fly high in the wind.
The second story goes like this. The kite was born as Chinese children sat below a catalpa tree (梓树). A catalpa tree is known for large leaves and seed pods (荚), which can be over 10 inches long. The catalpa tree’s seed pods have two “wings” that help the seeds move far from the base of the tree. As the leaves and seed pods sailed on an upward wind, the children became inspired to create their own kites.
There is a Chinese legend (传说) telling a different story. When a farmer was working in his field one morning, the wind blew his hat off many times. He had to stop to run after his hat. When the farmer went in for lunch, he had an idea that he could tie one end of a thin rope to his hat and the other end around his wrist (手腕). That afternoon, he went to work again. A sudden and strong wind swept the hat off his head and carried it high into the sky. But the farmer no longer needed to run after his hat. At that time, he got the idea of making a kite.
The idea for a kite could have been born as people watched birds fly, sat below a catalpa tree or found a way to get back a hat. Like the roots of many inventions, these stories are each inspired by people’s experiences or observations of the natural world.
32.Where were the first kites created?
33.In the first story, what inspired people to make kites?

C
C 25. B 26. D 27. A
根据第一段“Unfortunately, many of these plastic water bottles are being thrown away.
You can also throw the entire bubble in your mouth — no bottle needed!(信不信由你,Ooho就是几口水包裹在一个高尔夫球大小的泡泡里。你可以在它的皮肤上打一个洞,然后喝里面的水。你也可以把整个泡泡扔进嘴里——不需要瓶子!)”可知,本文主要讲的是来自英国伦敦帝国理工学院的三位设计师开发了一种名为Ooho的独特产品,旨在解决塑料水瓶的浪费问题。由此可知,最好的题目是A选项“Water That You Can Eat(你可以吃的水)”。故选A。
D
【答案】28.B 29.C 30.D 31.D

C
A. A protective skin. B. Bubbled water.

34.What gave the farmer the idea of making kites?
