I’ve been running pretty regularly since 2008. I never thought I could do it, but around then I was going through a really hard time and wasn’t sleeping so well. So, one morning, I got up at 4, had a cup of coffee and said, “Let’s try it.” After a block or two I was already out of breath. I kept going for several more blocks. It was not easy, but I was happy that I did it.
Since then, I have kept doing it for a few days a week. I wear comfortable shoes, stop listening to music while running (I find it really makes me unhappy. Besides, why carry a phone or iPod when I don’t have to?), pay attention to my foot placement, and try to be present. I don’t think about anything when I am out.
Running isn’t easy; it’s hard; it’s tiring… but I love it. I get to be up and outside when hardly anyone else is in the early morning hours. I get to see beautiful sunrises and squirrels (松鼠) running about, birds singing to each other. I get to feel the fresh air. I feel clearer afterward. Tired and really sweaty (满是汗的), but, a bit clearer in the head.
I’m no marathoner (马拉松运动员) and I’ve never signed up for a race. I don’t want to compete against anyone. My biggest achievement was last summer when I finally finished the alphabet (全套英文字母) of streets in my neighborhood which was about a 9-mile round trip. My goal is to run all the way to the boardwalk at Coney Island and jump in the sea, which is just a bit further beyond Ave. Z. I don’t wear a watch to keep track of my pace because I’m not out to beat a time. I just try to be present and thankful that my legs and heart are working well and allow me to run. It’s one thing that I do just for me.
4. What can we learn about the author’s first running experience?
A. She ran for four hours B. She did it before 2008.

5. What is the author’s habit when she runs?
A She listens to music. B. She leaves her phone at home.
C. She runs with her family members. D. She thinks about her everyday problems.
6. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Why running is hard for the author.
B. How running is good for the author.
C. How the author formed the habit of running.
D. What the author does to improve her running skills.
7. What is the author’s biggest achievement in running?
A. She finished a marathon last summer
B. She ran from her house to Coney Island.
C. She ran from Ave. A to Z in her neighborhood.
D. She finished a 9-mile run before jumping in the ocean.

China Travel: ‘China is not what we expected,’ say foreign travelers
“City or not city, ah?”
An American vlogger in China often asks his family this question. He is known as “Hug Hug Bear” or Bao Bao Xiong in Chinese. The term “city” here can be understood as urbanization and modernity.
More and more foreign travelers are coming to China. They are experiencing first-hand the “city”. It is vastly different from their previous perceptions (看法). Some still view China through a biased lens. They even slander (诽谤) it. But the truth cannot remain hidden.
Helping more people understand and experience China requires an open and inclusive environment. It also requires supportive policies.
As of November 17, 2023, foreign nationals from 54 countries were qualified for the 72/144-hour visa-free transit policy. Changsha, Harbin, and Guilin have also implemented the 72-hour policy. Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Qingdao, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Jieyang, Dalian, Chongqing, Chengdu, Xi’an, Wuhan, and Kunming have all implemented the 144-hour visa-free transit policy.
To ensure foreign travelers have a smooth experience, they can now download payment tools like Alipay and WeChat. They can bind their international bank cards. Then they can enjoy an all-in-one service for dining, entertainment, and shopping in China. More than 30 e-wallets are available for use within China. This makes mobile payments incredibly easy.
Reservation services for attractions have also become more tourist-friendly. For example, the Shanghai Museum has an English reservation channel for foreign visitors. In April this year, the Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s Mausoleum Site Museum launched an international integration service platform. It helps foreign tourists make online ticket reservations. It covers 39 countries and regions in 24 languages and 29 currencies.
In terms of accommodation many hotels have upgraded their registration systems. They offer English maps, bilingual signs, and Western-style breakfasts. These thoughtful services remove many barriers. They make a foreign tourist’s experience in China more smooth and without interruptions.
8. Which of the following cities has NOT implemented the 72-hour visa-free transit policy?
A. Harbin. B. Guilin. C. Changsha. D. Shanghai.
9. What can be inferred about the impact of payment tools like Alipay and WeChat on foreign travelers?
A. They have limited usage in China.
B. They have significantly simplified the payment process for foreign travelers.
C. They are difficult for foreign travelers to use due to language barriers.
D. They are only available to travelers from certain countries.
10. What thoughtful services do many hotels in China offer to foreign tourists?
A. English maps, bilingual signs, and Western-style breakfasts.
B. Online shopping platforms, city tours, and cultural shows.
C. Language translation apps, free Wi-Fi, and local cuisine.
D. Airport shuttle services, free breakfast, and laundry services.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The urbanization and modernization of Chinese cities.
B. The cultural differences between China and the West.
C. The increasing convenience and accessibility for foreign travelers in China.
D. The challenges faced by foreign vloggers in China.
D
Mangabe forest in Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot Trees are circled by leafy plants filled with insects. As we follow our guides along the road to Mangabe village, a nearby tree shakes. It is a golden mantella — an endangered animal that — like so many species (物种) here — lives only in Madagascar.
We're going there to meet a group of Malagasy teenagers — young farmers who are changing how people farm in order to save their forest.
In Mangabe, communities make their livelihoods entirely through farming. The old method is often called “slash and burn” — cutting down a piece of forest and setting fire to it. When the nutrients in the ash ( 灰里的养分) are used up, that cycle starts again. “It causes serious deforestation,” says our guide Voahirana Randriamamonjy from the Malagasy conservation organization Madagasikara Voakajy.
Voahirana and her team are here to train the teenage members as part of their “Youth for Lemurs” project. This community-based project sets out to provide the new generation of farmers with the skills, knowledge and tools needed to grow their food without harming the forest.
The modern farming methods may not appear revolutionary ( 革命性的), but they provide life-changing profit. They enable the same land to be farmed each season, avoiding the need to clear more forest. And they produce higher yields (产量).
“I feel very happy,” 15-year-old Nantenaina says. “By planting just a small piece of land, I can produce a high yield. And if we can do this it means people will not cut and clear the forest. That's why I took part in this project.”
Nantenaina says that, since the project started three years ago, older villagers have started coming to the young pioneers for advice about their methods — wanting to understand how they achieve their higher yields.
“The future of the forest,” says Voahirana, “depends on these young people. They have these new skills, which they can teach to their kids. So the next generation will be able to farm environmentally.”
12. Why did the author mention the golden mantella in paragraph 1?
A. To show that animals live happily in Mangabe village.
B. To explain why Mangabe forest is popular among tourists.
C. To state that many animals in Mangabe forest are endangered.
D. To prove that Mangabe forest is home to many special species.
13. What is the purpose of the “Youth for Lemurs” project?
A. To help bring back endangered animals.
B. To teach young farmers modern farming skills.
C. To call on the local people to plant new forest.
D. To offer poor kids opportunities to receive education.
14. What does the underlined word “profit” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Method. B. Experience. C. Benefit. D. Expectation.
15. Why did Nantenaina join the “Youth for Lemurs” project?
A. To get great job opportunities.
B. To protect the forest in her hometown.
C. To learn some skills and help her parents.
D. To be as skillful as older farmers in her village.
Most of us have some resistance to conflict. Instead of dealing with issues directly, we try to be “nice” and end up spending lots of time talking to ourselves or others — complaining, feeling upset, thinking something that already happened over and over again. ___16___ Your health and self-esteem (自尊) may suffer and you think that you’re a victim. Below are three tips.
1)Speak objectively and make requests
You should use observations instead of labels. For example, in the case of the direct report, he or she is likely to be unhappy if you say, “I need to talk to you about how badly you come off in the meeting.” Instead, talk about what you observed: “I noticed in the last meeting your body language changed and you reacted strongly when the speaker said something wrong. I’d love to discuss how you could share your concerns in a better way.” ___17___
2)Keep a calm behavior
___18___ But it doesn’t. You can be yourself and remain kind, fair, and calm in these situations by being clear, focusing on the essence of the conflict, and making a request to ensure your problem is solved.
3) ___19___
Like any muscle you build, it takes practice before you can improve your abilities. ___20___ In the process of reflection, please ask yourself: What caused my anxiety and why does this feel personal? What request am I not making? Then, take action.
A. Start with baby steps.
B. But this can have serious costs.
C. Therefore, this action is bad for your health.
D. Then you can go further and ask for improvement.
E. Start with easier situations first and reflect how to address the conflict.
F. Try to do as many things as possible at once, and do each one perfectly.
G. People who shy away from conflict often think that it has to look aggressive.

An Angel on a Snowy Night
The wind was blowing hard as I was driving down the twists and turns of the country road. I was desperate to get home before dark, but there seemed no way. The forecast said there was going to be a heavy snow on the way. It was freezing cold outside. The wind was blowing against the windows, letting out buzzing noises. Hair standing on end, I stepped hard on the accelerator, longing to make it to my cozy home earlier.
The car was roaring along the rough road when I suddenly heard a big bang coming from behind. The car somehow slowed down, and I managed to pull it over to the side of the road. I was in a cold sweat from extreme terror, wondering what had just happened. Dragging myself out of the driver’s seat, I shivered with cold. Suddenly, a gust of cold wind cleared my head. Quickly I examined the car. Much to my surprise, no serious damage was done. It was just a flat tire, but the car couldn’t move forward an inch!
It was black dark outside. There was not a single soul around to turn to. A wave of fear instantly washed over me. Worse still, it began to snow at the very moment. Snowflakes were dancing in the air at the mercy of howling wind. How I wished someone could come to my rescue just in time! With nowhere to hide, I had to wait in the darkness, cold and helpless.
I waited and waited, but no car or truck passed by. Swallowed by complete darkness, I almost went mad. “What if no one comes? What should I do?”, I mumbled. At this point, I was totally seized by anxiety and fear. My patience was running out when loud noises boomed out from the dark night. There came a Ford pickup, with dazzling light cast over the white snow. I sprang to my feet, waving my arms crazily.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

C. She did it in the afternoon D. She covered several blocks.
5. What is the author’s habit when she runs?
A. She listens to music.

China Travel: ‘China is not what we expected’ say foreign travelers
In terms of accommodation, many hotels have upgraded their registration systems.

D 13. B 14. C 15. B
因此作者提到“It is a golden mantella — an endangered animal that — like so many species (物种) here — lives only in Madagascar.(这是一种濒临灭绝的金色曼蛙,像这里的许多物种一样,只生活在马达加斯加)”是以自己在这片森林中看到金色曼蛙这件事举例说明本段主旨。
根据第四段中的“This community-based project sets out to provide the new generation of farmers with the skills, knowledge and tools needed to grow their food without harming the forest.(这个以社区为基础的项目旨在为新一代农民提供在不损害森林的情况下种植粮食所需的技能、知识和工具)”可知,这一项目教年轻一代的农民农耕技术,让他们能在不破坏森林的前提下种庄稼。
根据划线词后的“They enable the same land to be farmed each season, avoiding the need to clear more forest. And they produce higher yields (产量).(它们使得每个季节都可以耕种相同的土地,避免了砍伐更多森林的需要。而且它们的产量更高)”可知,此处介绍现代农耕技术的好处。因此,profit在此应表示“好处”。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段中的“By planting just a small piece of land, I can produce a high yield. And if we can do this it means people will not cut and clear the forest. That’s why I took part in this project.(只要种一小块地,我就能获得很高的产量。如果我们能做到这一点,这意味着人们将不会砍伐和清除森林。这就是我参与这个项目的原因)”可知,Nantenaina认为如果能在有限的土地上实现农作物高产量,人们就不会再砍伐这片美丽的森林进行耕作。由此可推断,她参与该项目的原因是要保护她家乡的森林。故选B。
第二节(共五小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
B 17. D 18. G 19. A 20. E
根据空前内容“Instead of dealing with issues directly, we try to be “nice” and end up spending lots of time talking to ourselves or others—complaining, feeling upset, thinking something that already happened over and over again.(我们不是直接处理问题,而是试图表现得“友善”,结果花费大量时间与自己或他人交谈——抱怨、感到难过、反复思考已经发生的事情。)” B“But this can have serious costs.(但这可能会付出严重的代价)”能够承接上文,指出逃避冲突的后果,且“this”指代上文的逃避冲突的行为,符合语境。故选B。
根据空前内容“For example, in the case of the direct report, he or she is likely to be unhappy if you say, “I need to talk to you about how badly you come off in the meeting.” Instead, talk about what you observed: “I noticed in the last meeting your body language changed and you reacted strongly when the speaker said something wrong. I’d love to discuss how you could share your concerns in a better way.”(例如,在直接报告的情况下,如果你说,“我需要和你谈谈你在会议上表现得有多糟糕。”他或她可能会不高兴。相反,谈论你观察到的情况:“我注意到在上次会议上,你的肢体语言发生了变化,当演讲者说错话时,你反应强烈。我很想讨论一下,你如何能以更好的方式表达你的担忧。”)”可知,此句举例说明如何客观表达并做出请求,即先描述观察到的情况,然后提出希望对方改进的方面,此处应该承接上文,说明这样做的好处,即可以进一步要求对方改进。选项D“Then you can go further and ask for improvement.(然后你可以进一步要求改进。)”
根据下文内容“But it doesn’t. You can be yourself and remain kind, fair, and calm in these situations by being clear, focusing on the essence of the conflict, and making a request to ensure your problem is solved.(但事实并非如此。在这些情况下,你可以保持真实的自己,保持友善、公正和冷静,通过表达清晰、关注冲突的本质并提出请求来确保你的问题得到解决。)”可知,该句与前一句构成转折关系,指出虽然面对冲突时人们可能会认为必须表现得有攻击性,但实际上并非如此,人们可以保持冷静和理智。选项G“People who shy away from conflict often think that it has to look aggressive.(回避冲突的人往往认为它必须看起来有攻击性。)”
根据下文“Like any muscle you build, it takes practice before you can improve your abilities.(就像你锻炼任何肌肉一样,在提高你的能力之前需要练习。)” 故选A。
根据下文内容“In the process of reflection, please ask yourself: What caused my anxiety and why does this feel personal? What request am I not making? Then, take action.(在反思的过程中,请问自己:是什么引起了我的焦虑,为什么这让我觉得是针对个人的?我没有提出什么要求?然后,采取行动。)”可推测,空处提到我们要反思。选项E“Start with easier situations first and reflect how to address the conflict.(先从简单的情况开始,并反思如何解决冲突。)”中的“start”和下文的“then”形成一致;而“reflect”也和下文的“In the process of reflection”相符。

keep on doing sth.

这里是一个非限制性定语从句,先行词是the edge of the World,在从句中作地点状语,故填where。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Para 2: The driver drew back and refused to take the money.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The pickup finally stopped, and out stepped the driver. “What’s up? young man!” asked the driver. “I have a flat tire.” I responded. The driver then knelt on his knee and took a close look at the broken tire. “Nothing serious, I’ll help replace the tire.” Hearing his words, I breathed a sigh of relief. A surge of warmth soon flowed through my heart. The driver immediately pulled some tools out of the trunk and set to work. Just within minutes, the spare tire was installed in place. Deeply touched by the driver’s selfless help, I grabbed his arm, trying to cram some cash into his hand.
The driver drew back and refused to take the money. In no time, he stepped onto the pickup and soon disappeared into the dark night, leaving me greatly shocked. An accident turned out to be a blessing when a stranger approached me like an angel. Many years have passed, but the driver’s kind gesture still sticks in my head. It was his generous help that drove away cold, bringing me warmth on that snowy night. Even though I don’t know his name, his act of kindness makes a great difference to me, always inspiring me to reach out to those in need.
