Joy Mangano is now an American inventor. She was divorced and had three kids under age 7 when she was 33, and was barely keeping up payments on her small two-bedroom home by working extra hours as a waitress. “There were times when I would lie in bed and think. I didn’t know how I was going to pay that bill,” Mangano says.
But she had a special ability for seeing the obvious thing. She knew how hard it was to mop (用拖把擦干净) the floor. “I was tired of bending down, putting my hands in dirty water, wringing (拧) out a mop,” Mangano says. “So, there’s gotta be a better way.”
How about a “self-wringing” mop? She designed a special tool you could twist in two directions at once, and still keep your hands clean and dry. She set out to sell it, first a few at flea markets.
Then Mangano met with the media. But would couch potatoes (电视迷) buy a mop? The experts on shopping TV were less than certain. They gave it a try, and it failed. Mangano was sure it would sell if they’d let her do the on-camera display. She said, “Get me on that stage, and I will sell this mop because it’s a great item.”
So QVC, a multinational corporation specializing in televised home shopping, took a chance on her. “I got onstage and the phones went crazy. We sold every mop in minutes.”
Today she’s president of Ingenious Designs, a multimillion-dollar company, and one of the stars of HSN, the Home Shopping Network. Talking about the household invention, Mangano says, “It is as natural for me as it is for a parent to talk about their child.”
4. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. Mangano’s small home. B. Mangano’s work experience.
C. Mangano’s unhappy marriage. D. Mangano’s hard living conditions.
5. Mangano sold the mop successfully with the help of ______.
A. HSN B. QVC
C. couch potatoes D. experts on shopping TV
6. What does Mangano think of her invention?
A Unsatisfactory. B. Unnecessary. C. Normal. D. Special.
7. What can we learn from the text?
A. Mangano got the idea of self-wringing mop from her own experience.
B. The experts on shopping TV were confident about Mangano’s mop.
C Mangano once had to work seven days a week to support her family.
D. HSN is a business organization that doesn’t sell goods on the Internet.
C
In the 1994 film Forrest Gump (《阿甘正传》), there’s a famous saying, “Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get.” The surprise is part of the fun. Now blind box toys (盲盒玩具) are bringing the magic of surprise to online shopping. A blind box toy is hidden inside uniform packaging but invisible from the outside. You don’t know what will be inside, although the toys usually come from pop culture, ranging from movies to comics and cartoons.
Blind boxes have become popular since they were first introduced from Japan to China in 2014. According to a 2019 Tmall report, the mini-series of Labubu blind box designed by Hong Kong-born Kasing Lung, was named Champion of Unit Sales with 55,000 sold in just 9 seconds during the Singles Day shopping event. Most customers for blind boxes are young people aged 18 to 35.
According to The Paper, blind box toys are popular in part because of their cute appearances. The cute cartoon figurines (小塑像) usually come in small sizes, making them suitable for display almost anywhere. Even if blind boxes are not their top choice for decorations, the mystery and uncertainty of the process also attracts people. It’s the main reason why people buy blind boxes one after another. “Fear of the unknown is always a part of the box-opening process,” said Miss Cao, 24, who lives and works in Shenyang. “You cannot know what it is inside until you open all the boxes.” Opening a blind box is a delightful little surprise for our mundane daily lives, something small but fun to wait for each day, week or month. When people open this simple little box, they may be disappointed, but the uncertainty is part of the fun. People will open more blind boxes and hope for a better outcome.
When someone re-makes Forrest Gump, don’t be surprised when he says, “Life is like a blind box…”
8 Why are people attracted by blind boxes?
A. They often get toys designed by famous artists.
B. They can learn about pop culture from the packaging.
C. They can experience the excitement of online shopping.
D. They don’t know what they’ve got until they open the boxes.
9. How are the blind boxes received in China?
A. They are refused by aged people. B. They are mainly used for display.
C. They are popular with young people. D. 55,000 boxes are sold in a single day.
10. What does the underlined word “mundane” probably mean in paragraph 3?
A. Uncertain. B. Boring. C. Hopeless. D. Exciting.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The popularity of blind boxes. B. The origin of blind boxes.
C. The problems with blind boxes. D. The cultural effects of blind boxes.

Jason M. Allen was almost too nervous to enter his first art competition. Now, his award-winning image is stirring debates about whether art can be generated by a computer, and what, exactly, it means to be an artist.
In August 2022, Allen, a 39-year-old game designer who lives in Pueblo West, Colorado, won first place in the “digital arts/digitally-operated photography” category at the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition. His winning image, titled Théatre D’opéra Spatial, was made with Midjourney—an artificial intelligence system that can produce detailed images when fed written prompts (提示).
Allen’s winning image looks like a bright cross between a classic and modern painting. It’s one of three such images he entered in the competition. Allen posted excitedly about his win on Midjourney’s Discord server on August 25, along with pictures of his three entries; it spread quickly on Twitter days later, with many artists feeling angry about Allen’s win because of his use of AI to create the image. “He just ‘pressed a few buttons to make a digital art piece’,” one Twitter user wrote. “We’re watching the death of art unfold before our eyes.”
However, to get the final three images he entered in the competition, Allen said, he took over 80 hours. First, he played around with phrasing that led Midjourney to generate images of women in nice dresses and space helmets. Over time, with slight adjustments to his written prompts, he created 900 repeating processes of what led to his final three images. He gave the final touch to those three images in Photoshop. Then he ran the images through another software program called Gigapixel AI that can improve resolution (分辨率) and had the images printed at a local print shop.
Allen is glad that the debate over whether AI can be used to make art is getting so much attention. “Rather than hating the technology or the people behind it, we need to recognize it’s a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward,” Allen said.
12. What do we know about Theatre D’opera Spatial?
A. Its beauty is widely accepted. B. Its creation is an easy process.
C. It shows the death of traditional art. D. It has caused a lot of arguments.
13. What did Allen do to create his entries?
A. He searched for smart written prompts. B. He edited his final images in Photoshop.
C. He fed Midjourney with famous paintings. D. He developed the software named Gigapixel.
14. What is Allen’s attitude to the debate over Al-created art?
A. Worried. B. Uncaring. C. Positive. D. Annoyed.
15. What might be the best title for the text?
A. AI Beats Out Human Artists in the Art Field
B. AI Won an Art Contest and Artists Are Angry
C. An Artist Wins State Fair Art Contest and Laughs
D. The Artist From Pueblo West Is Defending His Work.

It was a moral lesson on Tuesday afternoon. Jodie hadn't really heard anything, maybe a whisper (低语), but when she turned around, the girls in the back row of the class were looking at her, trying to hide smiles. Mr Smith was talking about people's jobs. He also wanted to find out what his students wanted to do when they grew up. He called on Billy Mitzer first.
''My daddy works in a bank,'' Billy Mitzer said. ''I want to work in a bank too. There's lots of money in the bank.'' ''My parents have a grocery store,'' Emmy Disalvo said. ''But I want to be an airline pilot.''
Jodie liked it when Mr. Smith asked them questions like this. Mr. Smith was about to call on Jodie when the girls in the back row started laughing. Shirley Danes shouted, ''Jodie's daddy is a garbage man!''
Everybody in the class laughed out loud except Jodie. She felt embarrassed and her face turned bright red. She looked around the whole classroom. Everyone was laughing. Some kids were even holding their noses.
Mr Smith was angry. He seldom raised his voice, but at that time he did. ''Silence! I want everybody to be quiet,'' he shouted. The laughter stopped immediately. The sound of cars and people going by on the street came through the windows. ''You should feel sorry for yourselves,'' Mr Smith said. ''Being a garbage man is a difficult and greatly useful job. We should be grateful to Jodie's father. Where would we be without him?''
A few kids started laughing again. ''It's not funny,'' Mr Smith went on. ''Garbage is a serious matter. I think you all should say sorry to Jodie. And after that, you're all going to write Jodie's father a nice letter to tell him how much you appreciate what he does for all of us—in other words, keeping our city clean.''
Paragraph 1:
Everyone did as Mr Smith asked them to.

A. Unsatisfactory. B. Unnecessary. C. Normal. D. Special.
7. What can we learn from the text?
A. Mangano got the idea of self-wringing mop from her own experience.
B. The experts on shopping TV were confident about Mangano’s mop.
C. Mangano once had to work seven days a week to support her family.
D HSN is a business organization that doesn’t sell goods on the Internet.

8. Why are people attracted by blind boxes?
D 9. C 10. B 11. A

It’s the main reason why people buy blind boxes one after another.(即使盲盒不是他们装饰的首选,但这一过程中的神秘感和不确定性也吸引着人们。
根据文章第二段“Blind boxes have become popular since they were first introduced from Japan to China in 2014. According to a 2019 Tmall report, the mini-series of Labubu blind box designed by Hong Kong-born Kasing Lung, was named Champion of Unit Sales with 55,000 sold in just 9 seconds during the Singles Day shopping event. Most customers for blind boxes are young people aged 18 to 35.(自2014年从日本传入中国以来,盲盒就变得流行起来。根据2019年天猫的一份报告,由香港出生的卡星龙设计的Labubu盲盒迷你系列,在双十一购物节期间,仅在9秒内就售出了55,000个,被评为单品销量冠军。盲盒的大多数顾客都是年龄在18到35岁之间的年轻人。)”可知,盲盒在中国深受年轻人喜爱。故选C。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词所在句“Opening a blind box is a delightful little surprise for our mundane daily lives, something small but fun to wait for each day, week or month.(打开一个盲盒是我们……日常生活中一个令人愉快的小惊喜,是每天、每周或每月都在等待的一件小事,虽小却有趣。)”可推测,盲盒为日常生活带来了惊喜和乐趣,而日常生活本身则是平淡无奇的,所以“mundane”在这里的意思是“无聊的”或“平淡的”。选项B“Boring(无聊的)”与此相符。
故选A。

Allen posted excitedly about his win on Midjourney’s Discord server on August 25 along with pictures of his three entries; it spread quickly on Twitter days later, with many artists feeling angry about Allen’s win because of his use of AI to create the image.
D 13. B 14. C 15. B

根据第二段的“In August 2022, Allen, a 39-year-old game designer who lives in Pueblo West, Colorado, won first place in the “digital arts/digitally-operated photography” category at the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition.(2022年8月,生活在科罗拉多州普韦布洛西部的39岁游戏设计师艾伦在科罗拉多州博览会美术比赛中获得了“数字艺术/数字操作摄影”类别的第一名)”和第三段“it spread quickly on Twitter days later, with many artists feeling angry about Allen’s win because of his use of AI to create the image. (几天后,这张照片在推特上迅速传播,许多艺术家对艾伦的获奖感到愤怒,因为他使用了人工智能来创作这张图像。)”及全文可知,文章主要介绍了美国科罗拉多州博览会艺术比赛中,AI画作拿一等奖惹怒人类艺术家,并引发热议。所以“AI Won an Art Contest and Artists Are Angry(AI赢得了艺术比赛,惹怒人类艺术家)”作为文章标题最为合适。

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Jodie started crying out.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1: Everyone did as Mr Smith asked them to. They all said "Sorry, Jodie", but Jodie could tell they didn't really mean it. She also knew nobody wanted to write her father a nice letter. She wished Mr Smith hadn't made them do it. Her face was burning red and she felt like crying. Mr Smith came to her desk and patted her shoulder, saying "Let's go out in the hall while everyone is writing those letters, so we can have a private talk." Jodie followed him out to the hall.
Paragraph 2: Jodie started crying out. She was embarrassed. She didn't want to cry in front of everybody, but she couldn't hold back her tears any more. Mr Smith was tall. He knelt and gave her his handkerchief. "I'm sorry that this happened," he said. "But remember, hard work done well is something to be proud of. We all should be grateful to garbage men." The teacher's words cheered Jodie up, and she felt proud of her father.
She wished Mr. Smith hadn't made them do it.
