Teaching Objectives:
1. Enable students to understand and use expressions related to book discussions.
2. Cultivate students' listening and speaking skills.
3. Enhance students' awareness of core literacy in language learning.
Core Literacy Highlights:
1. Language Competence: Students will learn and practice new vocabulary and sentence patterns related to books. They will improve their listening comprehension and speaking fluency.
2. Cultural Awareness: Through discussing different classic books, students will be exposed to diverse literary cultures.
3. Thinking Quality: Encourage students to think critically about the books they read and express their opinions.
Teaching Methods:
1. Task-based teaching method.
2. Communicative approach.
Teaching Aids:
1. Multimedia equipment for playing audio.
2. Pictures of the books mentioned.
Teaching Procedures:
1. Lead-in (5 minutes)
Show pictures of different books (Treasure Island, Oliver Twist, Robinson Crusoe, Tom Sawyer, Little Women). Ask students if they have read any of these books.
Elicit some initial responses from students to activate their prior knowledge.
2. Listening Practice (15 minutes)
Play the audio for 2a. Students listen and circle the names of people who have read the books.
Check answers as a class.
Play the audio for 2b again. Students listen and write T for true and F for false.
Discuss the answers in pairs and then share with the class.
3. Pair Work (10 minutes)
Students use the information from 2a and 2b to have conversations. For example: “Has Tina read Treasure Island? Yes, she has. She thinks it's fantastic. What's it about? It's about...”
Walk around the classroom and offer help if needed.
4. Role-play (10 minutes)
Students read the conversation in 2d in pairs.
Select a few pairs to role-play in front of the class.
Encourage students to use appropriate expressions and intonation.
Teaching Reflection:
This lesson went well overall. The use of pictures in the lead-in successfully grabbed students' attention and activated their prior knowledge. The listening tasks were appropriate for their level and helped improve their listening skills. The pair work and role-play activities gave students ample opportunities to practice speaking. However, some students still struggled with understanding the questions in the listening tasks. In future lessons, I will provide more pre-listening activities to help them better understand the tasks. Also, I will encourage more shy students to participate in class activities to enhance their confidence. Additionally, I need to find more creative ways to make the lessons more engaging and interactive to further improve students' learning motivation.
