21st November
Dear Miles,
I got your letter yesterday and I was thrilled to hear that you are coming over to spend a few days with us. It’s been a long time since we last saw each other and I’ve really missed you.
Well, a skiing (滑雪) holiday sounds great, but I’m not really sure about the dates. You see, my family and I are going to Scotland for New Year’s Eve, so the days around Christmas are more convenient. I know you usually have some days off at this time of year, so maybe you can consider it.
As for accommodations (住宿), you don’t need to worry. We’ll stay at my uncle’s country house, which is quite close to the ski area. I’ve asked him and he said we could use it for as long as we like. You don’t need to worry about skiing equipment (装备) either. My brother Steve will be happy to lend you his. He’s going to Switzerland for an art show with his friends, so he won’t need it anyway.

Alan Robinson and Walter Macfarlane live in Oahu, Hawaii. They first met when they were in sixth grade. Soon they became best friends. They stayed best friends for more than 60 years. Then, late last year, they found out they are something more.
Robinson and Macfarlane were born 15 months apart. Robinson was adopted (收养). Macfarlane never knew his father.
The two played on the high school football team together. They liked the same things, they looked alike, but they never thought they might be related.
Many years later, both men tried to learn more about their parents. They did so on their own. Robinson took a DNA test. The results were put on the website ancestry.com. Macfarlane tried to find out about his family online. When that failed, he also took a DNA test. Macfarlane’s daughter helped him look through the test results.
The top match belonged to an online user called “Robi737”. The tests showed that he and Macfarlane shared the same mother.
Actually the username belonged to Alan Robinson. “Robi” was one of Robinson’s nicknames (绰号). He used to fly 737 airplanes.
The best friends were really half-brothers.
“Yeah, it was a shock,”Robinson said. But the news also made some sense.
“Macfarlane was like an older brother all the time,” Robinson said.

In 1964, Norman Cousins, a famous American editor (编辑), returned from a trip and became seriously ill. In the hospital, he was in terrible pain (疼痛) and couldn’t move his body. Doctors told him he had a serious illness and only had a few months to live. They gave him lots of medicine, but his condition only got worse.
Cousins had learned from a research that positive emotions (积极的情绪) are good for the health, so he decided to try an experiment (试验). He would fill his days with good feelings and laughter and see if that might improve his condition. He left the hospital and moved into a hotel room where many funny TV programs and copies of old movies and cartoons were available. He also got a nurse to read funny stories to him. His plan was to spend the whole day laughing and thinking about happy things. On his first night in the hotel, Cousins found that laughing at the movies helped him reduce (减轻) pain. For the first time in weeks, he could sleep comfortably for a few hours. Every time the pain came back, he watched another funny movie and laughed until he felt better.
After a short time, Cousins was able to stop taking all of his medicine. Finally, his condition improved so much that he went back to work.
Cousins later wrote a book about how laughter and happiness helped him to beat a deadly illness. Many people didn’t believe his story and said that his doctors were ▲ about his illness. But since then, research has found that emotions do have a strong influence on physical health, and experiments have found that laughter can help to reduce pain. Scientists today are working to understand the ways that our minds influence our bodies.

第II卷(非选择题共60分)
第一节 任务型阅读(本节5个小题,每小题3分,共15分)
Imagine a lake that is as blue as the summer sky, with thousands of trees and high mountains around. It sounds like something from a storybook, but Lake Tahoe is a real place in California and Nevada, USA. It is the second deepest lake in the United States (the deepest is Crater Lake in Oregon).
There is no place as beautiful or fun for a vacation as Lake Tahoe. It is the best place for camping, skiing, fishing and so on. In fact, people come during every season to enjoy the lake and mountains. However, Lake Tahoe is best known for its snow sports. Most of the small towns around Lake Tahoe have hotels where families can stay when they want to ski or go snowboarding. These hotels are much more fun to stay at than the ones in other parts of the country.
Thousands of people visit Lake Tahoe each year, but the area was popular long before California and Nevada were even states. Native Americans from the Washoe tribe (部落) traveled through the mountains and lived near Lake Tahoe. In fact, the name “Tahoe” comes from a Washoe word meaning “lake”. The Washoe used the land and water for food. They even created many legends (传说) about the lake. The most famous one is the water monster ( 怪物) called Tahoe Tessie that lived in the lake.
While people now use Lake Tahoe mostly for fun, it is still important to keep the water and land clean. California and Nevada work together to make sure it is used wisely.

第三节
I wanna talk about learning languages. I’ve lived in many different countries, such as in Western Europe, Middle East, and now here in Hong Kong. And I’ve learned five or six different languages. Before I came to Hong Kong, I lived in Spain for ten years. And when I first arrived, the most important thing was being able to communicate with people. I don’t attend classes. I prefer to learn by just talking to people, finding out what I need to say by looking at dictionaries and listening carefully. Watching TV programs also helped me a lot, for example, the weather report. This is great, because they always say the same things. So I can really quickly hear the same words repeated again and again. And the pictures helped of course. I didn’t find those very easy to learn at all. But it was a lot of fun.

What changes I have had
How time flies! Almost more than two years has quickly passed since I came to high school. I find I have changed a lot.
First, I used to be afraid of speaking, even in class. In order to change, I took every chance to speak in front of people. So now I dare to give a speech in public. Also, I’m more outgoing than I used to be. I have more friends than I used to have.
Second, I didn’t use to be good at Chinese. When my Chinese teacher learned about that, she told me the most useful way to improve was to read widely, especially famous books. I took her advice and I have read 30 books so far. It really helps me a lot.
I am happy that I have changed so much!
