More than 100 podcasts (播客) this year in NPR’s Student Podcast Challenge have touched on a topic that’s increasingly important to young people: climate change. Here are four student podcasts that show the minds of students and what they have to say about climate-related news in their communities — and what they hope to do about it.
Behind the Scenes of the Mosquito Fire
A sixth-grade class at the Georgetown School of Innovation in Georgetown, Calif., shares stories from the devastating (毁灭性的) Mosquito Fire in 2022. This group of eight students asks two firefighters what it’s like to fight fires and protect loved ones in their hometown.
Fires: Set Ablaze
At Chautauqua Elementary, the Vashon fifth-graders talk about the far-reaching and lasting impact of wildfires and wildfire smoke — and the direct effects on their lives, like waiting for the school bus on a smoky day. The students also interview experts and share their research on wildfire precautions (防范).
Flowing Through Time In this podcast from Peak Academy, a group of eight middle schoolers reports on dealing with water shortages in Bozeman, Montana. They track the history of their growing hometown’s water supply, which has been dependent on mountain snowmelt. As that source becomes less reliable in a warming world, the students turn to the grown-ups to ask what they can do to conserve water.
Washed Away
The deadly flooding in eastern Kentucky last year forever changed the lives of high schoolers Ryley Bowman, Carolina Johnson and Hunter Noble. The three classmates at Morgan County High School in West Liberty, Ky., share firsthand accounts of their own and their family’s experiences during the floods.
1. Which podcast will be attractive if you are interested in firefighters’ experience?
A. Washed Away. B. Fires: set Ablaze.
C. Flowing Through Time. D. Behind the Scenes of the Mosquito Fire.
2. What do high schoolers share in their podcast?
A. Their personal experience. B. The history of water supply.
C. An interview with experts. D. Methods of saving water.
3. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To inspire us to make more podcasts.
B. To solve the problem of climate change.
C. To introduce students’ podcasts about climate.
D. To encourage us to do more for the community.

Living on the Florida Emerald Coast, people view a hurricane as a common thing. So it is not unusual for a family to have several full gas cans and bottled water stored in their houses all summer.
Though unwilling to evacuate from a hurricane, on September 15,my family was forced to leave our home for my grandfather's house several miles away. We spent the early part of that evening watching the hurricane draw closer on the Weather Channel. Around nine o'clock, a loud sound shook the house, turned over the roof and carried it off. Soon came an indoor rainstorm.
Realizing the damage, my grandfather began to be afraid. The storm had started, but he still ran out into the heavy rain and wind to see how much of the roof was left. We got him back inside. I had never seen him so scared. Mom finally asked him to lie down in his room.
The leak had progressed rapidly. It soon became a race against time to protect what was saved. Some people may think it necessary to save material things, but I hoped to save those items with emotional value, such as the photos. I still feared the storm, but I more feared the influence it brought.
The next morning, it started to clear up. Thankfully, my family weathered the storm, though the same could not be said for the house. Only the wooden beams remained, but inside many of his things were safe. My mom and I had worked tirelessly through the night.
It was late, but we were still unwilling to go to bed. We discussed the rebuilding of the house. Under the beautiful sky, we suggested looking after my grandfather more often in the future. After this disaster, I realized the truth that the hurricane itself was not so terrible if we loved each other.
4. Why do the people store full gas cans and bottled water?
A. To save much money. B. To watch a hurricane easily.
C. To protect their houses well. D. To be prepared for hurricanes.
5. How did the author's grandfather feel during the hurricane?
A. Frightened. B. Surprised. C. Calm. D. Angry.
6. What does the underlined word "weathered" in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Prepared well for. B. Waited patiently for.
C. Came safely through. D. Suffered seriously from.
7. What may the author learn from the experience?
A. Family love is powerful. B. Take things as they come.
C. Good health is over wealth. D. Lost time is never found again.

In a 2012 study, Boaz Keysar, a professor at the University of Chicago in the US, led an experiment on the relationship between foreign languages and people’s way of thinking.
In the experiment, people were asked to make a choice: Just take one pound or take a 50 percent chance of winning 2.50 pounds. When given this choice in their native language, most people took the safe choice of only getting one pound. But they were more willing to make the riskier choice when asked in a foreign language, leading to more profits (收益) overall, according to The Guardian. As Keysar put it, “People just hate the chance of losing, but they hate it less in a foreign language.”
In another study published this year, Keysar and his team did an experiment in which participants were given a series of related words like “dream”, “snooze”, “bed” and “rest”. Later, when asked which words they remembered hearing, people were more likely to mistakenly remember “sleep”, which was not on the list, in their native language. But it was much less likely to happen if they did the test in a foreign language. As Keysar explained, people have more careful thinking when using a foreign language, leading to more accurate memories.
The foreign language may even influence our personality. Silvia Purpuri at the University of Trento, Italy, looked at people’s willingness to face uncertainty and enter strange situations. Being tolerant (宽容的) of uncertainty allows people to have more creative ideas and be more open to new things. It turns out that people naturally score more highly on this trait (特点) when they can speak or use a foreign language because speaking a foreign language requires taking risks.
The evidence is clear: By learning a foreign language, you’re not just learning a language—you’re gaining a new state of mind.
8. What does the first experiment suggest?
A. People like expressing in a foreign language.
B. People are afraid of losing in face of money.
C. People make quick choices in their native language.
D. People prefer riskier decisions in a foreign language.
9. Which of the following best explains “accurate” underlined in paragraph 3?
A. Colorful. B. Simple. C. Usual. D. Exact.
10. Willingness to face uncertainty makes people ________.
A. Cool-headed. B. Open-minded. C. Light-hearted. D. Easy-going.
11. What is the main idea of this text?
A. Foreign languages change mistaken memories.
B. People should learn to face uncertainty.
C. Foreign languages influence how people think.
D. Personality depends on language learning.
D
Back in January, my partner and I decided to take exercise seriously. This would mean spending hours every week working out, stretching and sweating our way to better health, which is something that is particularly difficult when you glance at the weather outside and see dark clouds on the horizon. “It looks like it is about to rain. I guess I’ll go for a run tomorrow instead.” But then just as we were on the edge of giving up again, we discovered a brilliant new way to make exercise better: by turning it into a videogame.
SWIFT is a cycling game that you control by pedaling your real bike, which is fixed onto a device called a turbo-trainer. As you pedal, the trainer sends signals back to your computer to control the character on screen. And smartly, the game sends back instructions to the trainer to apply different levels of resistance (阻力), so that as you’re cycling up a hill in the game, you can actually feel it on the bike.
So, after restoring our small garage and signing up for a $12 per month subscription, we had our TV, bike and all-important cooling fan ready to go.
Once you’re ready, you can participate in virtual cycle rides in 3D-recreations of real places, like London and New York, or fictional locations. And importantly, other real human cyclists appear alongside you, sharing your journey.
The best part of the design is that it has used lots of the tricks of traditional videogames to keep pushing you a little bit further and harder: go a little faster, and you’ll be rewarded with a little achievement marker, and if you pedal harder, you might win a race against another real player. It mainly produces some sort of dopamine (多巴胺) that simply can’t be matched by riding a traditional exercise bike.
I’m not the only person who has noticed this. Today many other companies in the tech industry are competing for the same users, and they all offer their own unique versions.
12. Why was it difficult for the author to take exercise?
A. They didn’t have enough time. B. The weather was unpleasant.
C. They lacked suitable equipment. D. They preferred videogames.
13. Which is NOT a must for SWIFT users?
A. A real bike. B. Monthly payment.
C. A turbo-trainer. D. 3D glasses.
14. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. How SWIFT attracts its users.
B. Who are the target users of SWIFT.
C. What physical benefits SWIFT users get.
D. Why traditional bikes are replaced by SWIFT.
15. What is the attitude of the tech industry towards the idea of SWIFT?
A. Unclear. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.

【81题答案】
【答案】I am Lihua, doing a report on how I balance my study and rest. In fact, I used to be a failure in balancing my study and rest, as a result of which I became anxious and depressed. Luckily, with some practical methods, I am able to keep a balance between them quite well. Here are some methods that I used.
To begin with, I ensure the length and quality of my sleep at night, contributing to next day’s more energy to study well. What’ s more, I do some exercise every day to refresh myself after I study a long time, which can not only help me relax from my study but also keep me energetic and lift my spirits. Finally, I always try to keep a healthy diet and avoid junk food. It allows me to enjoy better health.
In a word all these measures are of benefit to both my study and rest, ensuring me to study more efficiently and have a more relaxed rest.
