第二部分 阅读理解(共两节, 满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2. 5分, 满分37. 5分)
阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中, 选出最佳选项。
A
Since I was born and brought up in a rural (乡村的) town, I have a great interest in nature. Using the chance of studying abroad in my second year at college, I decided to go to Canada just because I wanted to see the beautiful phenomena there. So after I finished the study abroad program, I went to Yellowknife in the North West Territories.
I clearly remember the sixth night in the Yellowknife. Suddenly my host mother came to my room around 8 p. m. and told me to change clothes and go outside quickly carrying her camera.
The “northern lights” were flickering in the sky! I was astonished and just stood there with my mouth open. I forgot to take pictures of the mysterious lights.
I was so excited that I couldn’t sleep at all that night. Since that night, whenever it was sunny, I went outside at night and looked at the sky. It was so cold that I lost all feelings in my hands and feet. Actually, the time of my being able to be out was limited. I had to bring her camera back to house in one hour at the most, for the camera was going to be broken because of the cold temperature.
As I took the pictures of the northern lights, I came to find a characteristic movement of the lights. They first appear in the north part of the sky and then they gradually come down to the south part of the sky. After that, suddenly, they come in the middle of the north and south only for a while, which is the time when the best northern lights can be seen. Since it is only a few seconds for the northern lights to come down to the middle of the sky, it is very hard to get good pictures.
The stronger the sun acts, the better and stronger the northern lights flicker in the sky. That’s because they occur from the collisions between atmospheric gases and solar wind. Much more solar wind comes to the earth when the sun is active, which leads to the best northern lights. And the colours of the northern lights depend on the height of the collisions and kinds of gases.
22. Why did the author forget to take pictures?
A. It was very cold outside.
B. He was shocked by the wonderful sights.
C. The lights were flickering in the sky.
D. He lost all feelings in his hands and feet.
23. From the passage we can see that ________.
A. the author could stay as long as he liked outside
B. the “northern lights” came out every night
C. the author took a lot of pictures with his camera
D. cameras will be damaged if exposed too long in very cold weather
24. When is the best time to see the “northern lights”?
A. They appear in the north part of the sky.
B. They come down to the south part of the sky.
C They are in the middle of the north and south.
D. They rise in the east part of the sky.
25. The author found it hard to take good pictures because ________.
A. the lights stayed in the middle for a very short time
B. the lights of the sun affected the “northern lights”
C the lights were caused by the collisions of gases
D. the colours of the lights are determined by the height

You have everything you think you need for your dream job, but could something else be holding you back? You possess hard skills for the job, but you may lack soft skills. Hard skills are things that are measurable and technical. A master’s degree in business is a hard skill. The ability to speak Spanish is a hard skill. Many specific qualifications for a job are hard skills, such as years of work experience or proficiency (精通) with particular computer programs.
On the other hand, soft skills are harder to define. And they can’t be defined. And they can’t be measured. Soft skills covers a wide range of characteristics that you can work on for a lifetime but some of the most common and most necessary for success include being a good listener and speaker, a wise leader, a problem solver, a strong communicator or a team player. It’s also helpful if you can accept feedback, settle conflicts with others, deal with difficult people or be flexible. These soft skills are what many employers desire.
Soft skills benefit you in many ways. Being a good listener, for example, is very helpful if you’re a doctor. Being flexible, a team player and a problem solver help you succeed when dealing with deadlines.
Soft skills are something extra that help a particular person to succeed. Being able to show you possess them could make a difference in landing a job you’ll love, or being more successful in the job you already have. They make the difference between someone who is just OK at their job and someone who is outstanding, the person you always want on your team. In general, soft skills make you more likable and more competent.
Soft skills are what can set people apart from each other on resumés or in job interviews, but soft skills don’t come naturally.
26. Which of the following belongs to hard skills?
A. Having a good command of English. B. Communicating with others efficiently.
C. Being good at expressing oneself. D. Being able to solve problems.
27. Which of the following is TRUE about soft skills?
A. They are measurable and technical. B. They are taught in many universities.
C. They are desired by many employers. D. They are specific job qualifications.
28. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Hard Skills Differ from Soft Skills B. Soft skills Can Be Learnt at School
C. Soft Skills Needed in Workplace D. Soft Skills Matter to Your Success at Work
29. What will be probably talked about following the last paragraph?
A. Why soft skills are important. B. How soft skills are developed.
C. Where soft skills are applied. D. What the key soft skills are.
C
Java’s Cafe is a fundamental extension of the Rochester experience, opening its arms to comfort coffee, tea, and dessert lovers alike. For the typical UR students, the Java’s on Gibbs St. has become a place of solace during stressful testing times, and on more heartwarming occasions, a social hub.
Slowly approaching its thirties, Java’s has enjoyed a good reputation in its local. In 1978, Java Joe created a coffee farm in Hawaii. With great dedication to his craft, the great master of coffee beans made his way to Rochester then. In 1992, Joe decided to start selling coffee at the Public Market and opened up a store on Gibbs St. with the help of Michael Calabrese. This location, next to the Eastman School of Music, is the first of many shops Java Joe opened. As a lover of the blues, Joe enthusiastically decorated this flagship store with artistic and musical influence.
After Gibbs location, Joe planted Java Joe’s where he was first starting out — in the Public Market. Later, Java Joe’s moved to a nearby building, and received a name change — Java’s at the Market Coffee Roasters. This building served as a place where those who visited would often catch a glimpse of Joe skillfully roasting his coffee beans in the dancing flames and cultivating his drinks with care. However, in 1997 he licensed “Java Joe’s” to Calabrese, who then renamed the Gibbs Cafe to what we know today — Java’s Café.
Joe remained in the Public Market location until he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Joe died of lung cancer at 68. The influence he had poured into his business is well-known and highly regarded. He has won many awards in his life.
The next time you head down to Gibbs St. for your morning cup, keep in mind the extraordinary story of how that cup came to be, all thanks to Java Joe.
30. What does the underlined word “solace” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Tension. B. Anxiety.
C. Safety. D. Relief.
31. What is true about Java’s Café on Gibbs St.?
A. The name of the shop keeps unchanged up to now.
B. It was popular with the locals and students as well.
C. Java Joe had the ownership of the shop in 1997.
D. It is the flagship store and has won several awards.
32. What is special about Java’s at the Market Coffee Roasters?
A. Joe’s specially-made coffee beans.
B. Its super-quality coffee and service.
C. Joe’s demonstration of coffee-making skills.
D. Its attraction to the music school students.
33. What is the text mainly about?
A. The popularity of Java’s Cafe.
B. The development of the coffee industry.
C. The contribution Joe made to Rochester.
D. The founder and development of Java’s Cafe.

When scientists talk about recent extinctions, birds and mammals (哺乳动物) get most of the attention. But the first global analysis of its kind finds it is twice as many plants that have disappeared as birds, mammals, and amphibians (两栖动物) combined.
Researchers reviewed published research, international databases, and museum specimens such as grasses from Madagascar, finding that 571 plants species have gone extinct in the past 250 years. One reason why the total is higher than that of the well-studied animals is that there are simply more species of plants. Looking at percentages, the situation is worse for mammals and birds. An estimated 5% of those species have gone extinct, compared with 0.2% of plants.
The loss includes the Chile sandalwood tree in the South Pacific, which was cut down for its fragrant (芳香的) wood. It was last seen on Robinson Crusoe Island in 1908. The extinction rates among plants have been highest for trees and shrubs on islands, which often have species that occur nowhere else, and in regions with rich diversity, especially the tropics and in Mediterranean climates.
Just a few years later, the world lost the banded Trinity (Thismia americana), a leafless plant that grew entirely underground except for its flowers. Most species of this kind of plant grow in rainforests, but this plant was first described in 1912 in a sandy wetland in Chicago, Illinois, and was wiped out by development.
According to the team’s report in Nature Ecology & Evolution, the total of 571 extinct plant species is four times higher than the official listing kept by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Even so, it is probably still an underestimate (低估), as less is known about the status of plants in Africa and South America than on other continents. Many of these species may disappear, too. A major review of the status of global biodiversity recently estimated that more than a million species, including 14% of plant and animal diversity, are threatened with extinction.
34. What caused the extinction of the Chile sandalwood tree?
A. Climate change. B. The market demand.
C. Environmental pollution. D. The decline of the habitat.
35 What do we know about the banded trinity?
A. It flowered without bearing seeds.
B It disappeared during the 19th century.
C. It was a flowering plant without leaves.
D. It was a rare plant growing underground.
36. What can we infer about the plant species from the text?
A. Their current situation is more worrying.
B. About one plant species dies out every year.
C. More plant species will keep alive in the reserve.
D. They would be replaced by other new species soon.
37. In which section of the newspaper can we find the text?
A. Sports. B. Nature. C. Entertainment. D. Figures.

The Upside to Being Outside
Research shows that being in nature makes people feel good, whether they’re roughing it in the wilderness for days or just hanging out at a local park for a while. To act with honesty was a habit with Susan who always follows the Golden Rule: “Do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you.” But when she thought over her past conduct, a blush of shame appeared on her cheeks, as many little acts of selfishness and unkindness came back to her memory. She was determined that for the future, both in great things and small, she would remember and follow the Golden Rule.
It was not long after this that an opportunity occurred, which tried Susan’s principles. One Saturday evening she went, as usual, to Mr. Thompson’s store, to receive the money of her mother’s washing for him, which amounted to five dollars. When she arrived, she found Mr. Thompson extremely busy. As Susan made her request for the money, he simply pressed a bill into her hand.
With the bill in hand, Susan happily went out of the gate. Pausing to put the money safely in her purse, she discovered that he had given her two bills instead of one. She looked around; nobody was near and her first reaction was joy at the unexpected prize.
“It is all mine,” said she to herself. “I will buy my mother a new coat with it, and she can give her old one to my sister Mary, and then Mary can go to school with me next winter. I wonder if I can buy a pair of shoes for my brother Tom, too.”
At that moment she remembered that he must have given it to her by mistake. But again the voice of the tempter whispered, ‘‘He gave it, and how do you know that he did not intend to make you a present of it? Keep it! He will never know it.”

Of course, my brother Michael and I were excited when she put forward the idea. Michael, 23, was finishing up an engineering degree. And I had already borrowed a lot of money for my college education. We weren’t going to be able to have a trip like this on our own for quite some time. Obviously, we thought this was the best idea our mother had ever had.
But we received phone calls and emails from my mother every day as the date of travelling was near. “Don’t forget to make copies of your passports.” “Make sure to call the bank.” “And seriously, Cara, pack sweaters. You’re going to be cold.” It had been seven years after I left home. And except during the holidays, my brother and I hadn’t spent much time together with our family for a long time.

So, as I was saying, I’m a firm believer in taking action.
W: And your current situation?
M: Well, I graduated from university two years ago with a degree in journalism, but I haven’t been able to find a job that really suited me. To be honest, newspapers aren’t an easy world to break into, unless you have the right contacts. So instead, I decided on a fresh approach, which was to seek out companies I admire, basically any company or organization that’s working for some positive good in society. And that’s how I found you. And my hope is that when I find the right company, they’ll see that I have the right attitude and the right skills, so that we can both benefit from working together, um, yeah …

【原文】Some people collect fine paintings, and others collect rare coins. But I collect comics.
I first began collecting comics when I was about seven years old. I remember my father buying me one in a hotel in Africa. He told me it was the same comic he used to read when he was a little boy. I remember reading it that afternoon on a hot and sweaty bus, and I loved every page of it. From then on, whenever we stopped at town, he would buy me a comic. They were often cartoon-type comics with funny characters and silly stories. But he would also buy me comics about brave soldiers at war, or pilots of planes. They were all very exciting and they opened up my imagination.
As I grow older, my taste in comics becomes different. I still love the cartoon and the soldier ones, but I also begin reading superhero comics too. Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man are my particular favorites, and I enjoy anything to do with space or time travel.
Today, my love for comics is as strong as ever, even though I am 47! It has to be — I sell them for a living now! I opened a comic bookstore a few years ago.

B He was shocked by the wonderful sights.
C. They are in the middle of the north and south.
D. They rise in the east part of the sky.
25. The author found it hard to take good pictures because ________.
A. the lights stayed in the middle for a very short time
B. the lights of the sun affected the “northern lights”
C. the lights were caused by the collisions of gases
D. the colours of the lights are determined by the height
【答案】22. B 23. D 24. C 25. A

35. What do we know about the banded trinity?
A. It flowered without bearing seeds.
B. It disappeared during the 19th century.
D. Figures.
【答案】34. B 35. C 36. A 37. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项新的研究发现,该研究表明消失的植物数量是鸟类、哺乳动物和两栖动物总和的两倍。

细节理解题。根据文章第三段“The loss includes the Chile sandalwood tree in the South Pacific, which was cut down for its fragrant (芳香的) wood.(损失的包括南太平洋的智利檀香树,因为其芳香的木材而被砍伐)”可知,智利檀香树是因为其芳香的木材而被砍伐。由此可知,市场需求导致了智利檀香树的灭绝。故选B。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“Just a few years later, the world lost the banded Trinity (Thismia americana), a leafless plant that grew entirely underground except for its flowers.(仅仅几年后,世界上就失去了美洲水玉杯,这是一种除了花外完全生长在地下的无叶植物)”可推知,美洲水玉杯是一种没有叶子的开花植物。故选C。
【36题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“According to the team’s report in Nature Ecology & Evolution, the total of 571 extinct plant species is four times higher than the official listing kept by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Even so, it is probably still an underestimate (低估), as less is known about the status of plants in Africa and South America than on other continents. Many of these species may disappear, too. A major review of the status of global biodiversity recently estimated that more than a million species, including 14% of plant and animal diversity, are threatened with extinction(根据该团队发表在《自然生态与进化》杂志上的报告,灭绝的植物物种总数为571种,是国际自然保护联盟官方名录的四倍。即便如此,这个数字可能还是被低估了,因为人们对非洲和南美洲植物状况的了解比其他大陆的要少。这些物种中的许多也可能会消失。最近对全球生物多样性状况的一项重大审查估计,超过100万种物种,包括14%的植物和动物多样性,面临灭绝的威胁)”可知,该团队认为因为人们对非洲和南美洲植物状况的了解比其他大陆的要少,所以灭绝的植物物种总数被低估了。由此推知,植物种类的现状是令人担忧的。故选A。
【37题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“When scientists talk about recent extinctions, birds and mammals(哺乳动物)get most of the attention. But the first global analysis of its kind finds it is twice as many plants that have disappeared as birds, mammals, and amphibians (两栖动物) combined.(当科学家谈论最近的物种灭绝时,鸟类和哺乳动物得到了最多的关注。但是对这类植物的首次全球分析发现,消失的植物数量是鸟类、哺乳动物和两栖动物总和的两倍)”以及全文内容可知,这篇文章和自然相关。由此推知,我们可以在报纸的自然版上找到这篇文章。故选B。

Some scientists theorize that spending time in nature enables our brains to rest and recover from mental tiredness. ____41____
Naturally, scientific studies don’t cover everything that’s great about the great outdoors. ____42____ From recreation and exercise to happiness and creativity, there are lots of upsides to getting outside.
A. What’s more, the lift people get from nature is long lasting.
B. So, kicking back in a park is a bit like treating your mind to restful mini vacation.

第二节 读后续写(共1小题, 满分25分)

【答案】
This conflict was going on in her mind between good and evil. she was hurrying home as fast as possible. However, before she got home, the Golden Rule sounded in her ears. Suddenly she turned around and rushed along the road with breathless speed. A few minutes later, she found herself at Mr. Thompson’s inn. He was very surprised to see her.
“Sir, you paid me two bills instead of one,” she handed him the extra note. Moved by the little girl’s honesty, Mr. Thompson pulled out a shilling and offered it to her. Susan refused the money for she didn’t want to be paid for doing right——she only wished he wouldn’t think her dishonest. Desperate to tell her mother what she had done, Susan waved goodbye to Mr. Thompson and returned to her humble home with a lightened heart. Never would she forget this day through the course of her whole life.
