I remember the first time I got on a horse. I was two and we were watching a friend ride. My mom agreed to let me take a short ride with the friend! I was crazy about horses from then on, and begged for a horse every day.
When I was four years old, I had Selective Mutism, a special child disease(疾病) in which children stop speaking in certain social situations(情境). I spoke normally to my family and certain other people, but was silent at school and in social situations. I went months without a sound at school. At most, I might quietly whisper to a friend.
Until I was ten years old, one doctor had an idea. He asked what I wanted more than anything in the world, and I was going to be given an opportunity to work for that. I couldn't believe my good luck, but I just stood there trying to put it into words what I wanted most. Finally, he let me whisper the answer in my mother's ear, “A horse.”
Here it began. I had to try to talk, have a list of weekly tasks, answer the phone five times a week, make five phone calls to my friends and say one word to my teacher at school and the list went on. For a child with Selective Mutism, saying one word to someone can be like climbing Mount Everest.
I did everything that I was asked to do and my parents found me the perfect horse Sequoia. I fell in love with her quickly. It truly was a dream come true. Each weekend I could not . wait to spend my free time with Sequoia, forgetting all my problems and feeling strong and safe.
As I see it, horses are silent too. But they are fast, powerful and free at the same time. Horses give me the strength I lack. By connecting with them, I learned to accept what I used to avoid and found my voice. I hope I never stop learning from them. They have given me the best gift I could ever imagine— my life.

The word culture includes not only the customs of our society, its art, music, but also everyday activities. Cultures give us a sense of belonging in society. So the losing of one's culture is, for many, alarming. Many people believe their traditional ways of life are under threat and that something should be done. Yet for some, the losing of culture is a natural result of globalization and progress. So is the globalization of culture a threat or a chance?
Those who see globalization as a threat argue that societies are losing special parts of their cultures. For example, Omotik, a language spoken in East Africa, has only 50 live speakers. There are also increasing fears in China, where the losing of musical and dance traditions, as well as traditional crafts, is causing concern to many people. Some argue that it is hard to find differences between London and Tokyo. Young people, whose ideas are often influenced by Western or other popular cultures, often refuse or even give up the traditions their parents grew up with.
Others focus on the advantages of globalization. They accept that Western culture is spreading, but they also point to how Western countries and many other parts of the world are being shown to world cultures. Young Americans enjoy Japanese comic magazines and watch Korean movies. Thai teenagers enjoy pop music from Hong Kong. Many argue that there are advantages to these cross-cultural exchanges and that they lead to better understandings between cultures. They say world traditions are celebrated more widely because of these. Chinese New Year, now celebrated in most big cities around the world, is just one of the many festivals that are accepted internationally.
Anyway, many grass-roots organizations and governments are making efforts to protect their cultures. One successful example is Wales. There was a time when social pressures were killing off the Welsh language, but after years of efforts, it is now an active part of Welsh life again. Around the world, similar efforts are going on.
( )5. Which of the following is an opinion according to the passage?
A. Omotik is a language spoken in East Africa.
B. Young Americans enjoy Japanese comic magnzines.
C. The globalisation of cultures is a chance to traditional ones.
D. Chinese New Year is now celebrated in most big cities around the world.
( )6. The underlined word“concern” in Paragraph 2 probably means“_”.
A. worries B. changes C. differences D. problems
( )7. What does the underlined word“these” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Advantages. B. World traditions.
C. Cross-cultural exchanges. D. Argues.
( )8. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A. Culture Changes B. Globalization and Culture
C. Culture Protection D. World Culture

六、 An Unforgettable Festival
There are many festivals in China. We always have fun when we spend them. However, I never forget the last Mid-Autumn Festival. Mid-Autumn Festival is a popular and important lunar harvest festival celebrated by Chinese people. The festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar.
On that day, I had a big dinner with my family. After dinner, we admired the full moon which was round and bright. At the same time, we ate the delicious mooncakes. How happy we felt! Then my grandfather told us what the life used to be. They didn't have enough food and clothes. Their life was so hard that some people died of hunger. What my grandfather said has a great influence on me. I get to value the happy life and food. I don't waste any food any more. I will never forget the Mid-Autumn Festival because it always makes me think of my grandfather's words.
