VI. Teaching Procedures
Lead-in (5 minutes)
Show a short video clip about two friends having a conflict. Ask students what they would do if they were in such a situation.
Introduce the topic of the lesson: giving advice to solve problems between friends.
Listening Practice (15 minutes)
2a: Play the audio for the first time. Students listen and fill in the blanks with “could” or “should”. Check answers as a class.
2b: Play the audio again. Students listen and write the letters (a - e) next to the advice in 2a to understand why Peter doesn't like the advice. Discuss answers.
Role-play (15 minutes)
2c: Pair students up. One student plays Peter and the other plays his friend. They role-play a conversation using the advice from 2a and 2b. Walk around the classroom to monitor and provide guidance.
2d: Have two students role-play the conversation between Dave and Kim. Encourage other students to pay attention and comment on their performance.
Summary and Homework (10 minutes)
Summarize the key points of the lesson: the use of “could” and “should” for advice, and how to express problems and solutions in conversations.
Homework: Write a short passage about a problem you had with a friend and what advice you would give to solve it.
VII. Teacher-Student Interaction
During listening activities, ask students to raise their hands if they have questions or need to listen again.
In role-play activities, encourage students to ask and answer questions in character, promoting interaction between pairs.
After role-plays, ask students to give feedback to their peers, enhancing class participation.
VIII. Teaching Reflection
In this lesson, students actively participated in listening and role-play activities. The use of multimedia resources like audio clips and videos helped engage students and set the context for the topic. The role-play activities were particularly effective in allowing students to practice using the language in real-life situations. However, some students still had difficulty distinguishing between “could” and “should”. In future lessons, more examples and practice exercises could be provided to clarify this distinction. Additionally, some students were shy to participate in role-plays. Strategies such as smaller group activities or more encouragement could be used to boost their confidence and participation. Overall, the lesson achieved its teaching objectives to a certain extent, but there is room for improvement in terms of addressing individual student needs and enhancing student engagement.
