Today, some college students can learn to lose weight at school. Peking University, for example, introduced a weight loss course in 2022. It’s called “Physical Enhancement (体能提升): Exercise and Diet.”
The class helps overweight students lose weight through exercise and dieting. It’s only open to students with a BMI over 25.
Liang Chuyu took the class last year. At the start of the course, every student was given a physical exam. This was to record their weight, BMI and muscle content (肌肉含量).
Then, the students were asked to make their own weight loss plan. Some wanted to lose a certain amount of weight. Others planned to lower their body fat percentage (体脂率). The students were divided into groups. They had to report their exercise records to their group members every day.
Over the following weeks, the students attended exercise classes and lectures on health. One class was held in the dining room. There teachers showed the students which dishes had the most calories (热量).
After joining the course, Liang started going to a gym. And she began running on the playground almost every day. She also changed her eating habits. She ate healthy foods with fewer calories. By the end of the class, Liang had lost about 6 kilograms.
How do the students get their grade for the class? It depends on how well they follow their plans. According to the university, one-third of the students in the class lose more than 5 percent of their body weight. One student set a record last year by losing 15 kilograms.

“The next day, they reached the Poland border (边境). They checked their plan again and said goodbye. If everything went well, they’d meet inside Poland,” Grandma says.
“Ludwika and Louisette decided to cross the border during the day. If soldiers checked them, they’d find nothing because Lily had the valuable heart. At the same time, Lily waited till nightfall near a Polish forest. She had to climb a fence to get in. Waiting there, she was afraid of every noise. Was it a soldier or a dangerous animal? She could only stay quiet and wait.”
Grandma continues, “Finally, she started climbing. At the bottom, a dog sniffed and barked at her. Lily did not move. Finally, the dog ran off, and Lily hurried on. She felt like animals were following her, but she had to continue running.”
Mother comes in and makes Grandmother take a drink of water.
“In the end, Lily found a house 10 minutes from the border in the dark, which was the house of someone Ludwika trusted. Knocking on the door, Lily said their planned words: ‘For where your treasure is…’ The woman inside replied, ‘… There your heart shall be also.’ This meant it was safe. Lily went in and saw Ludwika and Louisette. They welcomed Lily with tears of joy and thanksgiving.”
A nurse comes in to ask Grandmother to have a rest. Two hours later, Grandmother wakes up and looks a little better. She continues.
“People think Ludwika, alone, secretly brought her brother Chopin’s heart back to Poland secretly. The full story was known only to a few. Today, it’s in a church in Warsaw because of that first Lily. She was glad to do this dangerous job without anyone knowing the truth.”
“The first Lily was strong and determined. You, my Lily, are like her. You have strength and determination. Use these qualities well,” Grandma says to me, and I kiss her.
Telling this story seems to be a turning point for Grandma. In just two weeks, she is back to her old self and is planning things for us to do and see.
What’s the first thing Grandma wants to do? Go to a concert of Chopin music, of course!

When Qin’s army surrounded (包围) Handan, the King of Zhao sent Prince Pingyuan to ask Chu for help. He was also allowed to take twenty advisors with him. But Pingyuan could only choose nineteen.
“Who could be the last?” he thought. “That’s fine. Nineteen is no different from twenty.”
A man named Mao Sui came to Pingyuan. “My lord, I’ve heard you’re short one advisor. I can go with you.”
“Sir, how long have you been with me?” the prince asked.
“Three years.”
“A talented person gets noticed quickly. You’ve been here for three years, and I don’t even know you. That means you are no good at anything. I’m afraid you’ll have to stay.”
“That’s because I’ve been waiting for my time, like today,” Mao Sui said.
Pingyuan only half believed him but allowed him to join. When they arrived in Chu, Pingyuan lost no time in seeing its king. They talked all morning but nothing was decided. The nineteen advisors were at their wits’ end.

“Assassin (刺客), assassin!” the King of Chu shouted and reached for his own sword.
“My lord, he’s one of us,” Pingyuan said calmly.
“The room is too dark. I didn’t think anyone was sitting there,” the king said. He picked up his cup to hide his sudden movement towards his sword.
“My lord, you keep refusing our offer because Chu is a big state,” Mao Sui said. “But how can such a great state forget its history? Qin has beaten you many times and burned your cities. Even we Zhao people feel ashamed of this. It’s not wise for us to turn against each other.”

Each of them can be as long as over 3 metres and as heavy as 103 kilograms. African elephants live in forests in Africa. They eat leaves, roots and fruits. Some people hunt elephants for their tusks that are expensive. They can be made into many nice things.
Indian elephants are smaller than African elephants. That are found in forests in India, Malaysia and some other countries in Southeast Asia. They live on grass. It is easier to train Indian elephants to carry heavy things and do all kinds of tricks to make people laugh.
An African elephant lives as long as a man does. But an Indian elephant does not live that long.

You ________

【解析】
【详解】根据汉语提示可知,either...or...“要么……要么……”;take the lead“领先”;fall behind“落后”;根据语境可知,句中时态为一般现在时,主语是You,所以动词take和fall使用动词原形。故填You either take the lead or fall behind。

【答案】例文:
Dear Jack,
Welcome to our school. I am writing to tell you something about our school and study.
Our school is not large but quite beautiful. All my teachers and classmates are kind and friendly. As students, we need to wear blue and white school uniforms on weekdays. This is designed to bring peace to our mind and body.
In our daily life, we are supposed to pay attention to some problems that may influence our study and life. As for me, I used to feel sleepy in class because of staying up late to finish homework. After realizing it, I took some actions to improve myself. I try to manage my time better and go to bed earlier.
You may also come across some problems. Don’t be afraid. Why not ask several friends for help? Work together to come up with some ideas to deal with them. Besides, it is important for us to achieve a balance between schoolwork and hobbies. I hope you can enjoy your school life here.
