She wanted me to “make something” of myself, and decided I had better start young if I was to have any chance of keeping up with the competition. With my load of magazines, I headed toward Belleville Avenue. The crowds were there. There were two gas stations on the corner of Belleville and Union. For several hours, I made myself highly visible, making sure everyone could see me and the heavy black letters on the bag that said THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. When it was supper time, I walked back home. “How many did you sell, my boy?” my mother asked. “None.” “Where did you go?” “Stood on the corner waiting for somebody to buy a Saturday Evening Post.” “You just stood there?” “Didn’t sell a single one.” “My God. Russell!” Uncle Allen put in, “Well, I’ve decided to take the Post.” I handed him a copy and he paid me a nickle(五分镍币). It was the first nickle I earned. Afterwards my mother taught me how to be a salesman, I would have to ring doorbells, address adults with self-confidence, and persuade them by saying that on one, no matter how poor, could afford to be without the Saturday Evening Post in the home. One day, I told my mother I’d changed my mind. I didn’t want to made a success in the magazine business. “If you think you can change your mind like this,” she replied, “you’ll become a good-for-nothing.” She insisted that, as soon as school was over, I should start ringing doorbells, selling magazines. Whenever I said no, she would scold me. My mother and I had fought this battle almost as long as I could remember. My mother, dissatisfied with my father’s plain workman’s life, determined that I would not grow up like him and his people. But never did she expect that, forty years later, such a successful journalist as me would go back to her husband’s people for true life and love. 25. Why did the boy start his job young? A. The early success of a journalist C. The happy childhood of the writer D. The important role of the writer in his family C It was my first day back home since starting college. A lot had changed in the last year. Not with my hometown but with me. I had left as a 17-year-old boy and had now returned as an 18-year-old man. In the city, I was living on my own, had a part-time job and was studying. Even the government recognized I was an adult: I had a driver’s license. So here I was, on my summer vacation, walking down the main street with my father, desperate for him to acknowledge how mature I was. When his recognition failed to appear, I took matters into my own hands. “Dad,” I said casually, “I’m thirsty. Let’s go for a beer.” It was the first time I’d ever mentioned beer in front of my father, let alone ask him to drink one with me. He turned to me with a curious expression on his face. “A beer? Well, I guess you’re old enough now. Let’s go to Sailors’ Bar. It’s where my cousin Tom, your uncle, used to drink. You remember him, right?” I had only some vague recollection of my uncle. He was the black sheep of the family-always in trouble.  We didn’t talk about him much. What ever happened to Uncle Tom, Dad? I haven’t seen him in years,” I said as we continued towards the bar. “Neither have I, unfortunately. He was a good kid once. But things changed,” my father said mournfully. As a boy, he explained, there had been no better-behaved boy than Tom. But after leaving school, he moved to the city and fell in with bad company. He started going out every night, drinking in nightclubs and playing cards. Soon he lost everything and had to beg his mum to pay his debts. She agreed on condition that he returned home. My dad took a deep breath and continued his tale. “Things settled down for a while. He married a lovely woman, gave up his bad habits. But it didn’t last. He was soon back to his old ways. He couldn’t resist. He was at Sailors, Bar almost every night. His poor mother died of grief and shame. His wife followed her soon after.” “What ruined him was alcohol He told me once, when a man begins drinking, he never knows where it’ll end. ‘So’, Tom warned me. ‘be cautious about your first drink!’” “He went from bad to worse. Last year Tom sent me a letter saying he had been found guilty of stealing, and sent to prison for ten years.” Dad finished talking just as we reached the front door of Sailors’ Bar. “Anyway, here we are. Let’s go in,” he said. But understood. I put my arm around my father and said, “I’m not thirsty anymore, Dad. Let’s go home.” 29. What did the young man invite his father to drink a beer? A. To find out if this extends to non-living beings, Loleh Quinn at the University of California, San Diego, and her colleagues tested whether rats can detect social signals from robotic rats. They housed eight adult rats with two types of robotic rat — one social and one asocial — for 5 days. The robots rats were quite minimalist, resembling a chunkier version of a computer mouse with wheels — to move around and colorful markings. During the experiment, the social robot rat followed the living rats around, played with the same toys, and opened caged doors to let trapped rats escape. Meanwhile, the asocial robot simply moved forwards and backwards and side to side. Next, the researchers trapped the robots in cages and gave the rats the opportunity to release them by pressing a lever. Across 18 trials each, the living rats were 52 percent more likely on average to set the social robot free than the asocial one. This suggests that the rats perceived the social robot as a genuine social being. They may have bonded more with the social robot because it displayed behaviours like communal exploring and playing. This could lead to the rats better remembering having freed it earlier, and wanting the robot to return the favour when they get trapped, says Quinn. The readiness of the rats to befriend the social robot was surprising given its minimal design. The robot was the same size as a regular rat but resembled a simple plastic box on wheels. "We'd assumed we'd have to give it a moving head and tail, facial features, and put a scene on it to make it smell like a real rat, but that wasn't necessary," says Janet Wiles at the University of Queensland in Australia, who helped with the research. The finding shows how sensitive rats are to social cues, even when they come from basic robots. Similarly, children tend to treat robots as if they are fellow beings, even when they display only simple social signals. "We humans seem to be fascinated by robots, and it turns out other animals are too," says Wiles. 33. Quinn and her colleagues conducted a test to see if rats can ________. A. send out warning messages to their fellow B. distinguish a friendly rat from a hostile one C. attain sociable traits through special training D. pick up social signals from non-living rats 34. What did the asocial robot do during the experiment? A. It followed the social robot. B. It played with some toys. C. It moved around alone. D. It set the trapped rats free. 35. According to Quinn, the rats released the social robot because they ________. A. tried to practice a means of escape B. expected it to do the same in return C. wanted to display their intelligence D. considered that an interesting game 36. It can be learned from the text that ________. A. rats are more sensitive to social cues than expected B. rats are more socially active than other animals C. rats behave differently from children in socializing D. rats appear to be adaptable to new surroundings E You’ve probably heard that brick-and-mortar retail(实体零售) is in trouble. Even industry giants are closing hundreds of stores. Given retail’s gradual change from physical stores to mobile and e-commerce(电子商务), you may be wondering, “What will retail look like in the future?” Nobody knows. But here are a few things you can expect to see based on current technology. Super-fast delivery is coming. Today, the normal practice is two-day delivery. But if you’ve been paying attention, you know that’s changing. In fact, up to 25% of consumers said that they would abandon their orders if one-day delivery wasn’t available. Of course, that’s just the beginning. Two-hour delivery is coming in the foreseeable future, and Amazon has already been trying 30-minute delivery. Your kitchen will resupply itself. You won’t have to worry about running out of essentials like coffee, pet food or snacks because your containers will sense stocks(库存) and replace those items without you having to lift a finger. No more waking up to find your coffee store is empty or last-minute rush to the grocery store because you forget to buy pet food. Know exactly what’s in stock and where to get it. Have you ever gone to a store hoping to buy something, only to learn that it was out of stock? A new feature from Google Home allows people to ask the Google Assistant to find in-stock products at the closest store. For example: “Google, where can I find the Nintendo Switch console?” The assistant will tell you how many stores have it right away and how close they are. Of course, it isn’t currently available for all stores in all locations, but you can already see the future when it has become standard. Convenience, experience, and options-retail will take on a new look. 37. How does the author develop the passage? A. By analyzing and commenting. B. By clarifying and describing. C. By asking and answering. D. By comparing and concluding. 38. What can we know from Paragraph 2? A. It is possible to deliver goods within two hours in the future. B. Consumers can’t get their orders in one day now. C. The delivery will be in two days in the future. D. Super-fast delivery has widely been used now. 39. According to the passage, what will happen in the future? A. Retail will disappear gradually. B. Industrial giants will rule the whole retail trade. C. People will ask the Google Assistant to purchase goods. D. Shopping will be more convenient and effective. 40. What’s the best title for the passage? A. How Will New Technology Change the World? B. It was my mother’s idea. A. She wanted me to ‘make something’ of myself, and decided I had better start young if I was to have any chance of keeping up with the competition.(我八岁时开始从事新闻工作,这是我母亲的主意。她想让我‘有所作为’,并决定如果我想有机会跟上竞争,我最好从小就开始。)”可知,这个男孩很早就开始工作了是因为他妈妈对他寄予厚望。故选C项。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二三段中的“One day, I told my mother I’d changed my mind. I didn’t want to made a success in the magazine business.(有一天,我告诉妈妈我改变主意了。我不想在杂志业取得成功。)”和“‘If you think you can change your mind like this,’ she replied, ‘you’ll become a good-for-nothing.’ She insisted that, as soon as school was over, I should start ringing doorbells, selling magazines. 故选A项。 【27题详解】 细节理解题。由文章最后一段“But never did she expect that, forty years later, such a successful journalist as me would go back to her husband’s people for true life and love.(但她从未想过,四十年后,像我这样一位成功的记者会回到她丈夫的人民那里寻求真正的生活和爱情。)”可知,作者是个成功的记者。故选B项。 【28题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是本文第一句“I began working in journalism when I was eight.( 我八岁时开始从事新闻工作)”以及最后一段 “But never did she expect that, forty years later, such a successful journalist as me would go back to her husband’s people for true life and love.(但她从未想过,四十年后,像我这样一位成功的记者会回到她丈夫的人民那里寻求真正的生活和爱情。)”可知,作者小时候,母亲就想让他做新闻工作,为了锻炼他,母亲带他一起卖报纸。在他想放弃时,母亲强迫他坚持下去。最后,他成为了一个成功的记者。因此,A项The early life of a journalist.(一个记者的早年生活)最能概括文章主题,故选A项。 C It was my first day back home since starting college. A. Because he was thirsty while walking with his father. B. Because he missed his father. C. Because he wanted to show he was an adult. D. Because he wanted to discuss his Uncle Tom. 30. What was the main source of Uncle Tom’s problems? A. His overly-strict family. B. His addiction to card games. C. The deaths of his mother and wife. D. His inability to control his drinking. 31. In the story the father told his son about Tom in order to ________. A. warn the son to keep away from Tom B. entertain the son while they walked to the bar C. recall an interesting period in the father’s life D. convince the son of the harm caused by drinking 32. What is the correct order of the following events from Uncle Tom’s life? a. His mother died. b. He married a lovely girl. c. He started going to nightclubs d. He was caught stealing. e. He went back home to live with his mother. f. He left school. A. d, f, e, b, a, c B. e a, f, b, c, d C. f, c, e, b, a, d D. f, c, e, a, b, d 【答案】29. C 30. D 31. D 32. Let’s go for a beer. 根据倒数第三段中“What ruined him was alcohol He told me once, when a man begins drinking, he never knows where it’ll end. (但离开学校后,他搬到了城市,结交了坏朋友。他开始每天晚上都出去,在夜总会喝酒,打牌。不久,他失去了一切,不得不求他妈妈替他还债。她同意了,条件是他要回家。)”可知,Tom离开学校后,结交了坏朋友,开始去夜总会喝酒,失去了一切,后来妈妈替他坏债,他搬回去和妈妈一起住,根据第五段中“He married a lovely woman, gave up his bad habits. (他娶了一个可爱的女人,改掉了他的坏习惯。)”以及“His poor mother died of grief and shame. (他可怜的母亲死于悲伤和羞愧。)”可知,Tom结婚了,后来母亲去世,根据倒数第二段中“Last year Tom sent me a letter saying he had been found guilty of stealing, and sent to prison for ten years. (去年Tom给我写了一封信,说他被发现犯了盗窃罪,要坐十年牢。)”可知,Tom犯盗窃罪,故正确顺序是f, c, e, b, a, d,故选C。 D Rats and other animals need to be highly tuned to social signals from others so that they can identify friends to cooperate with and enemies to avoid. A. rats are more sensitive to social cues than expected B. rats are more socially active than other animals C. rats behave differently from children in socializing D. rats appear to be adaptable to new surroundings 【答案】33. D 34. C 35. B 36. C.
