Best outdoor theatres to enjoy this summer
With the seasons changing, now is the wonderful time to start planning summer experiences at outdoor theatres in parks, city squares, woodlands and even the side of a cliff!
Storyhouse Theatre, Chester
Every summer in July, Storyhouse Theatre packs up their props, and builds an entire amphitheatre (露天剧场) along the road in Grosvenor Park. This year sees touring productions of Little Shop of Horrors, The Massive Tragedy of Madame Bovary and the usually unknown works of Shakespeare amongst other things.
Thorington Theatre, Suffolk
A new and beautiful addition to the outdoor theatre world, opening in 2021, Thorington is a natural amphitheatre hidden in the Suffolk woodlands. This year’s programme includes family favorites such as Teddy Bear’s Picnic and The Little Mermaid. You can also now order a picnic to meet you an hour before your show in an adjoining field.
Minack Theatre, Cornwall
Built into a cliff face in Porthcurno, you hardly need an excuse to visit this theatre; seeing anything at all, back dropped by the blue Cornish sea, will be an unforgettable experience. If you want a show particularly fitting for this unique surroundings, check out The Pirates of Penzance playing in July.
Willow Globe Theatre, Powys
An intimate theatre, the Willow Globe’s design is based on the London Globe Theatre. Their programme is largely filled with all things about Shakespeare: straight plays, of course, but also plenty of fun introductions and interpretations to bring his words to new or reluctant audience.

From the sky, parts of Borneo look like the top of a giant broccoli (西兰花). As the world’s third largest island with tropical rain forest, it lies in Southeast Asia. I lived on Borneo and was fortunate to have many wild animals visit my backyard.
During the first week in our home, I found a few eggs in a bed of dirt. I was told they were the eggs of a black spitting cobra (眼镜蛇) which was common here. Poison from its bite can kill a person in one to six hours. However, a cobra makes its living by eating small animals. It strikes at humans only in self-defense. We could live with our cobra by being careful not to surprise or scare it.
As a family, my husband and I and our three children thought of ways to be on the lookout. We made up chants and rhymes that we recited aloud so that we were alert and aware whenever we set foot outdoors. One went:
Cobra, cobra, are you there? Please don’t fall onto my hair.
The other day, the snake was on a branch of an oil-palm tree, less than ten feet from where we were sipping tea. Everyone came out to see it, and chairs were arranged as if for a concert. Its skin was jet-black. It glistened in the sun and lay still. Only through the binoculars (望远镜) could we see her breathing. She seemed to enjoy all the attention.
As we stared openmouthed at her grace, she missed a branch and fell splat to the ground. We burst out laughing as she recovered and wriggled up the tree.
I joked with my husband it was funny the way the cobra was showing off so much that it got too sure of itself and fell. He replied snakes probably do not think like humans. Then I realized a snake would naturally stay near the oil-palm tree whose cores are a rich source of food for mice and squirrels. Small mammals are the cobra’s favorite meal.
We shared the garden with the cobra for the rest of our stay and were sad indeed when we had to move and leave Borneo.
24.What can be learned about the cobra?
A.It is into humans. B.It thinks like humans.
C.Its favorite food is eggs. D.It is dangerous when threatened.
25.Why did we sing out “Cobra, cobra, are you there”?
A.To scare away cobras.
B.To draw cobras’ attention.
C.To caution ourselves against dangers.
D.To remind ourselves of small mammals.
26.Why did the cobra stay on an oil-palm tree?
A.For food. B.For rest. C.For pleasure. D.For sunbathing.
27.What is the purpose of writing the passage?
A.To show respect for mother nature.
B.To call on people to protect snakes.
C.To share an interesting life experience.
D.To introduce a common cobra to readers.

If you want to disturb the car industry, you’d better have a few billion dollars: Mom-and-pop carmakers are unlikely to beat the biggest car companies. But in agriculture, small farmers can get the best of the major players. By connecting directly with customers, and by responding quickly to changes in the markets as well as in the ecosystems, small farmers can keep one step ahead of the big guys. As the co-founder of the National Young Farmers Coalition (美国青年农会) and a family farmer myself. I have a front-row seat to the innovations among small farmers that are transforming the industry.
For example, take the Quick Cut Greens Harvester, a tool developed just a couple of years ago by a young farmer, Jonathan Dysinger, in Tennessee, with a small loan from a local Slow Money group. It enables small-scale farmers to harvest 175 pounds of green vegetables per hour — a huge improvement over harvesting just a few dozen pounds by hand-suddenly making it possible for the little guys to compete with large farms of California. Before the tool came out, small farmers couldn’t touch the price per pound offered by California farms. But now, with the combination of a litter price point and a generally fresher product, they can stay in business.
The sustainable success of small farmers, though, won’t happen without fundamental changes to the industry. One crucial factor is secure access to land. Competition from investors, developers, and established large farmers makes owning one’s own land unattainable for many new farmers. From 2004 to 2013, agricultural land values doubled, and they continue to rise in many regions.
Another challenge for more than a million of the most qualified farm workers and managers is a non-existent path to citizenship — the greatest barrier to building a farm of their own. With farmers over the age of 65 outnumbering farmers younger than 35 by six to one, and with two-thirds of the nation’s farmland in need of a new farmer, we must clear the path for talented people willing to grow the nation’s food.
There are solutions that could light a path toward a more sustainable and fairer farm economy, but farmers can’t clumsily put them together before us. We at the NYFC need broad support as we urge Congress to increase farmland conservation, as we push for immigration reform, and as we seek policies that will ensure the success of a diverse and ambitious next generation of farms from all backgrounds. With a new farm bill to be debated in Congress, consumers must take a stand with young farmers.
28. The author mentions car industry at the beginning of the passage to introduce_____.
A. a trend of development in agriculture
B. the importance of investing in car industry
C. the progress made in car industry
D. a special feature of agriculture
29. What does the author want to illustrate with the example in paragraph 2 ?
A. Small farmers may gain some advantages over big ones.
BCompetition between small and big farms is fierce.
C. Technology is vital for agricultural development.
D. Loans to small local farmers are necessary.
30. What is the difficulty for those new famers?
A. To gain more financial aid. B. To have farms of their own.
C. To hire good farm managers. D. To win old farmers’ support.
31. What should farmers do for a more sustainable and fairer farm economy?
A. Become members of NYFC.
B. Seek support beyond NYFC.
C. Expand farmland conservation.
D. Invest more to improve technology.

Wild chimpanzees are known to consume a broad range of plant matter, making it hard for researchers to figure out whether chimpanzees intentionally seek out medicinal plants to heal(治愈) themselves, or "passively " consume plants that happen to be medicinal.
At the Budongo Central Forest Reserve in Uganda, researchers from the University of Oxford observed the behaviors and health of 51 wild chimpanzees, belonging to two habituated communities. The researchers observed a male chimpanzee with an injured hand seek out and eat the leaves of a fem, which may have helped to reduce pain and swelling. They also recorded another sick chimpanzee consuming a cat-thorn tree.
The team also tested the plant species in the reserve, which they suspected were being consumed by the chimpanzees to self-medicate, for anti-inflammatory (抗炎) and antibacterial (抗菌) characteristics. The species included plants not part of the chimpanzees' normal diet, but being consumed for their healing characteristics. The authors found 88% of the plant species had antibacterial characteristics, arresting the growth of bacteria, while 33% of them had anti- inflammatory characteristics.
Deadwood from a tree in the Dogbane family showed the strongest antibacterial activity and also had anti- inflammatory characteristics, suggesting it could be used to treat wounds, they said. Roots from the East African mahogany tree and leaves from fem were found to exhibit potential anti-inflammatory effects. The results suggested that chimpanzees looked for and at specific plants for their medicinal effects, and the study was one of the first to document evidence of this kind, the authors said.
Team member Fabien Schultz hopes that the findings might lead to promising candidates for human medicines. "What if human lives can be saved by following the ways of our animal relatives? " he says.
32. Why is it challenging to determine if chimpanzees intentionally seek out medicinal plants?
A. Medicinal plants are rare in the forest.
B. Chimpanzees consume a wide variety of plant matter.
C. Chimpanzees hide themselves when they are sick or injured.
D. Researchers can hardly observe chimpanzees in the thick forest.
33. Which of the following might have the most powerful antibacterial effects?
A. Dogbane trees. B. Leaves of ferns.
C. Cat-thorn trees. D. East African mahogany tree roots.
34. What potential benefit does Fabien Schultz hope to achieve from the findings?
A. Identifying new human medicines.
B. Developing new animal care techniques.
C. Improving chimpanzee health in the wild.
D. Discovering new food sources for humans.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Diet of Wild Chimpanzees'
B. The Medicinal Characteristics of Plants
C. The Dietary Habits of Wild Chimpanzees
D. Chimpanzees Using Plants for Self- Medication
第二节七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
There has been a very serious decline in the numbers of shallow-water fish as a result of overfishing. People still want to eat fish, so the fishing industry must look at other sources, especially the deep waters of the Atlantic. ____36____
Conservation measures will have to be put in place if these deep-sea fish are to survive. Research on five such species shows that numbers have declined by between 87 percent and 98 percent. ____37____Many species could well disappear completely if the present trend continues. These are species that have been swimming in our oceans for hundreds of millions of years.
The problem is emphasized by the fact that the decline in numbers happened in less than twenty years. Deep-sea fish take a long time to reproduce and normally live for many years. ____38____The average size of such fish also declined, with one species showing a 57 percent decline in average size. This is of particular concern, as large fish tend to produce more offspring than small ones.
____39____The deep-sea species have been caught as if they were the fast-breeding (快速繁殖) fish like sardine and herring. It is like killing elephants as if they reproduced at the same rate as rabbits.
The damage done by overfishing goes beyond the sea environment. Millions of people make a living in the fishing industry. ____40____Measures must be taken to not only conserve ecosystems, but also sustain livelihoods and ensure food security.
A. Billions of people rely on fish for protein.
B. Many people now choose not to eat deep-sea fish.
C. Unfortunately, their reproduction rate is very low.
D. This puts them in the category of “critically endangered”.
E. None of these facts has been taken into account by the fishing industry.
F. Overfishing is a major cause of decline in populations of ocean wildlife.
G. This has resulted in a sharp decline in the numbers of many of the species caught.

Matthew kept staring at the clock on the classroom wall, the slowly moving second hand seemed to mock his anxiety. He was eager for the physics class to end so that he could make it on time to his painting hobby group. When the bell finally rang, Matthew bolted out of the classroom like a wild horse freed from its reins, grabbing his backpack. As he rounded the corner of the hallway, he accidentally collided with a classmate, scattering his canvas and paints all over the floor. The jumbled paint boxes burst open, mixing the colors into a bizarre patchwork. He quickly apologized, picking up everything while starting to run again, leaving a trail of colorful footprints on the floor.
After the painting hobby group session ended, Matthew hurriedly joined the other members of the school band. They had an important performance that day. As expected, Matthew was late again, his body covered in dried colorful paints and sweating profusely. He walked briskly into the backstage, changed into the band’s uniform, but the paint stains were still faintly visible. Unfortunately, Matthew had not prepared his sheet music, so he appeared distracted during the performance, often hitting wrong chords and unable to keep up with the rhythm, disappointing the team. Eventually, after a long day at school, Matthew returned home exhausted.
In his bedroom, Matthew sat at his desk, heaving a heavy sigh as he looked at the desk strewn with study books and sheet music. He needed to prepare for the upcoming exams, but he could hardly keep his eyes open. The next thing he remembered was his mother waking him up. He had fallen asleep with his head buried in the desk. As he sat up, his mother gently removed a sheet of music stuck to his cheek. She looked at her son lovingly, smoothing his messy hair.
“So,” she began, “how was school today?”
Matthew nervously looked at her, taking a deep breath. “Honestly, not too good,” he admitted sheepishly. “I couldn’t focus in class, I bumped into a classmate, and I let the band down. It couldn’t get any worse, right?”
“Well,” Matthew’s mother said gently yet seriously, “I think you’re taking on too much.”
That night, before going to bed, Matthew realized that things couldn’t go on like this.

应用文One possible version:
Dear Leo,
I'm writing to share with you a harvesting activity on our campus farm last Friday. It was such a delightful and memorable experience that I couldn't wait to tell you about it.
At the sight of the farm filled with ripe vegetables and fruits like peppers, tomatoes and grapes, we found it hard to contain our excitement. After receiving some instructions from the teachers, we plunged ourselves into the harvesting activity. We hustled and bustled around, each with a basket in hand, carefully gathering the fruits of our labor. Personally, I collected a variety of vegetables such as carrots, tomatoes and peppers. I even cooked them for my families, though, honestly speaking, they were a bit overcooked.
This activity not only brought me the joy of harvest but also taught me the value of labor, making the efforts on the campus farm truly worthwhile.
Yours,
Li Hua
读后续写One possible version
The next day, Matthew set about making changes to his busy schedule. He knew he had to prioritize his activities to manage his time better. First, he decided to cut back on the number of days he attended the painting hobby group, limiting it to twice a week instead of daily. He also talked to his band leader about the possibility of
scheduling extra practice sessions only on weekends. This would give him more time during weekdays to focus on his studies and prepare for exams. Additionally, Matthew began to wake up an hour earlier each day to review his schoolwork in the quiet morning hours, hoping this would help him stay on top of his academic responsibilities.
After Matthew put his new schedule into practice, things began to improve. With a more manageable routine, he found it easier to concentrate in class and keep up with his homework. The reduced frequency of his painting sessions allowed him to enjoy the hobby without feeling rushed, and his artwork even showed signs of improvement due to the extra care and attention he could now afford to give. At band practice, his performance steadily got better as he was no longer distracted or exhausted. The balance he struck between his commitments left him with a sense of accomplishment rather than stress. Matthew’s newfound organization skills gave him the confidence to tackle each day with renewed energy and enthusiasm, proving that sometimes, less truly is more

M: In the spring of 2021, 12 sailing teams from around the world competed in the first-ever Ocean Race Europe. The race set off from Lorient, France, on May 29, 2021. Teams of 6 to 10 people spent 22 days sailing the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea to the finish line, in Genoa, Italy. That’s where the race ended, on June 19, 2021. Two classes of speedy sailboats raced in the event: the IMOCA and the VO65. Offshore Team Germany won the IMOCA class race. And Portugal’s Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team won the VO65 class. The Ocean Race Europe presented plenty of challenges. Teams were on their boats for three straight weeks. When you were on board, all you do was race, eat, and sleep. There was no Internet connection and there were no movies. There wasn’t even a fridge or a freezer inside the boat. The Ocean Race Europe has a larger purpose. During the race, the boats collected scientific data from the salty waters. The data is shared with scientists. It provides insight about how the ocean is affected by climate change. Scientists use the data to further understand and advocate the world’s changing environment and seas.
