In 1996, I had just finished my first year of community college. After borrowing my dad’s car for school for a few months, we decided it was time for me to get my own car. Since my family was economical, we headed to the used car section. I found a cute little car that seemed like a great deal, but my dad had doubts from the start. He wanted to have it thoroughly checked before purchasing, but I was in a hurry. “Dad, we can’t inspect every car. Let’s just pick one. I want this one...” So, he gave in. The cute little car was mine! But as soon as we drove off the lot, problems started. First, constant overheating. Then, a knocking sound from the engine. But oh no---I was not going to be stopped. Not Miss Fancy Pants College Girl. I had my own car! What if the needle went to the “H” every now and then? Big deal! I just wouldn’t look at that. And that annoying little sound from the engine? I could just turn up the radio. Problem solved! Ignoring these warnings. I headed out to a Friday night party in my college town, looking forward to it for weeks and shocked that my dad allowed me to go. However, with an unexpected winter snowstorm, my dad started having second thoughts. The snowy roads combined with my car’s issues were enough for him to voice his concerns. But I wasn’t listening. Off I went, driving in the snow for thirty minutes. Just as I hit a long stretch of somewhat deserted highway, the unavoidable happened. My precious little car let out its final breath...and died. Luckily, I managed to coast to the side of the highway, barely over the line onto the shoulder, before it came to a complete stop. Now, remember, this was 1996, and cell phones were rare. There was no way to call for help. I was really stuck on a snowy dark night on the highway. _______________________________________________________________________________ About an hour later, a familiar car came out of nowhere. _______________________________________________________________________________ 文章大意 1996 年,“我” 上完社区大学一年级后准备买辆车,在二手车区看中一辆,不顾父亲的疑虑买下。 1. A father's love shines brightest in the darkest moments of our folly.(在我们最愚蠢的黑暗时刻,父爱闪耀得最明亮。) Paragraph 1: I was really stuck on a snowy dark night on the highway. The wind howled, sending chills through my body. I sat in the cold car, feeling terrified. I regretted not listening to my dad. I looked around, but there was only darkness and the falling snow. I wondered how long I would have to wait and if anyone would find me. Paragraph 2: About an hour later, a familiar car came out of nowhere. It was my dad's. Relief washed over me. He got out of the car quickly and rushed towards me. "I knew something would go wrong," he said. I hugged him tightly, feeling so grateful. His love and concern had overcome my stubbornness. Paragraph 1: I was really stuck on a snowy dark night on the highway. The snow was piling up around the car, and the cold was seeping in. I felt so alone and vulnerable. Every sound of the wind made me jump. I thought about how stupid I had been to ignore the car's problems and my dad's warnings. I prayed for someone to come. Paragraph 2: About an hour later, a familiar car came out of nowhere. When I saw it was my dad, tears filled my eyes. He had braved the snowstorm to find me. He opened the door and pulled me into a warm embrace. "Let's get you home," he said. I realized then that his love was always there, even when I was being foolish. I was really stuck on a snowy dark night on the highway. What if I hadn’t rushed Dad into buying this unreliable car? What if I hadn’t ignored the car’s warning signs? And what if I hadn’t turned a deaf ear to Dad’s concerns? However, it was no use crying over spilt milk. I must search for help! I stepped into the freezing snow, only to discover an empty road stretching ahead. The biting coldness drove me back into the car, but the dead car felt like a freezer. Would I die with my car and hit the headlines the next day? Abandoned by the whole world, I could do nothing but pray for a miracle.     About an hour later, a familiar car came out of nowhere. Dad appeared like magic! I threw myself into his warm and safe arms, regretful and guilty tears soaking his shoulder. Dancing snowflakes in the dim glow of the headlights witnessed our reunion. “Thank goodness! The price of ignoring my advice!” he exclaimed. I could sense care and concern in his reproachful tone. I was then rescued by my superman. That night’s experience has stayed with me ever since. Now, as a middle-aged mother with a daughter in university, I see my younger self in her impatience with my advice. To help her understand, I shared with her the story of the snowy night. She seemed to be lost in thought. I hope she doesn't need to learn life’s truths the hard way as I did.
