In our modern age, we do not think much about how our technology works. We are so used to tapping on our phone screen to get a map of our location. But how do our phones know where in the world we are and in which direction we are going? It is all thanks to the satellites in space that help our phones calculate our position. Depending on where you are around the world, your phone may be receiving data from different systems. In Europe, people have the Galileo system. In Russia, they have GLONASS. In the USA, people use GPS. China, meanwhile, has the Bei Dou Navigation Satellite System (BDS).
The BDS in operation today is more advanced than the first version (版本) of the system, which was sent into space in 2000. The present version has better technology and more satellites. The system is not finished, though. When it is completed, there will be lots of BDS satellites. In the future, those satellites will allow us to discover the position of objects with millimetre accuracy (精确度): that is ten times more accurate than GPS.
Even though more satellites are being added to the system, the BDS has already been put to use. More than 40,000 Chinese fishing boats are using the system now. These boats are very helpful in search and rescue operations (营救行动) at sea. They are able to communicate with support services on land as well as give the exact locations of ships in trouble.
The BDS is being used on land as well. Of course, it’s not hard to imagine how the system is helping the police and firefighters do their job. Agriculture is another area where there are applications for the system. Farmers are able to put the data to good use when operating smart farming equipment. For example, the BDS can be used to control driverless tractors as they turn up the fields. Farmers are also using drones (无人机) 10 check the health of crops and spread seeds over fields.
Although the BDS is of Chinese origin (起源), the developers have said that “China’s BeiDou is the world’s Bei Dou”, and they are actively developing international cooperation. Developers predict that the system will not only grow in popularity within China, but overseas as well. And when the system is complete and fully operational in the years to come, the BDS will undoubtedly bring lots of advantages to China and the rest of the world.

65. What is the best title for the passage?

Imagine the situation. You are driving along a desert or on a mountain. You have no idea where you are. Then your car breaks down. It is night and it is cold. You have no mobile phone. What do you do? Well, next time take a GPS with you. This invention may be able to help you. It is a device(装置) which uses satellites(卫星) to find the user’s position (位置). It can find your position within(不出某段距离) 20 meters. A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are.
GPS, which means Global Positioning System, is a small radio receiver. It looks like a mobile phone. You can hold it in your hand, or put it in your pocket. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, planes, or boats. Some of these devices have electronic maps, so you know where you are. For example, in a city they can tell you the name of the street.
There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand, or have it fixed into your car, plane, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting(环绕) the Earth.
The receiver contacts at least four of the satellites and calculates(计算) its position. The third part of the system is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world. They control the satellites and make sure they are working well.
Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile. They are becoming cheaper and more and more accurate(精确的). There are also new uses for the GPS. Perhaps they will become like watches. Everyone will have one and you will never be lost again.
66. According to the passage, with the help of the GPS, people _______.

69. What can we infer(推测) from the passage?
A. All GPS devices have electronic maps.
B. People in many countries will use the GPS for free.
C. The receiver of the GPS contacts at least five of the satellites.
D. The GPS will become more and more common in everyday life.

“Life is speeding up. Everyone is becoming unwell.” This might sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unwell person who lived in Rome in AD 53 wrote it.
We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives. But have all these development really improved the quality of our lives?
Picture this: You’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, the noise from the telephone is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done.
Inventions have speed up our lives so much that they often leave us feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, even no electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps that is because they live simpler lives.
One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandmother, with their daughter, and grandsons, Benjamin, 10, and Tomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phone.
The grandmother. Lyn, said, “The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes”. The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a trendy (时髦的), beer-drinking granny, to one who cooked things.
73. The underlined sentence was written in the modern times, wasn’t it?

I have made progress
I used to be a shy girl who was afraid of speaking in front of the people. As a result, I made few friends and often felt lonely. Finally, I made up my mind to be active and outgoing. At first, it was difficult for me to join in after-school activities. Luckily, with the help of my friends, I managed to express my thoughts and helped others with their problems in my spare time. Now, I’m not a shy girl any more. I have made much progress.
I used to be poor at English, especially in reading and writing. The biggest problem was that after reading a passage, I couldn’t fully understand it. This made me very sad and stressed. However, I didn’t give up. I kept on remembering new words , listening to English songs, reading English articles and writing English diaries whenever I had a chance. Little by little, I made much progress in English and also I became more and more confident.
What great progress I have made!
