So I went to a certain home improvement 55 and unluckily, they would only start selling their real trees on Black Friday, and my husband would leave by then. I found a saleswoman and 56 my situation. I also asked if they could possibly sell me one 57 . The lady talked to her manager for a minute, then led me outside to the locked tree area. I asked her which one was the cheapest, then she told me that her manager said to let me have any tree I wanted 58 !
Because of their kindness, I was able to give my husband a (an) 59 first Christmas with our son. When he walked in and saw 60 decorated, the look on his face was really priceless. 第一节 选择(本节共15小题;每小题1分,共15分)
阅读下列短文,从各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并将答案填涂在答题卡上。
A
Our youth group decided to do something nice for our city. We saw a young woman drove to the gas station and parked her car. She didn’t get out of her car. Instead, she began looking through her wallet.
Then she put her hands and head on her steering wheel (方向盘) and began to cry. The leader told us to politely knock on the window and offer a free gas card to her.
Hearing the knock, the lady tried to calm herself down and then rolled down the window. I said to her, “Here is a free twenty-five-dollar gas card for you. We just want you to know that someone loves you.”
The young woman began to cry again. After calming down for the second time, she accepted the gas card and then told us her story. She was a single mom who had been out of a job for a long time. She didn’t have enough money to live but was hopeful about a job interview that day.
In fact, she was on her way to it. Her gas ran out, and she thought she had one last ten-dollar bill in her wallet. But she couldn’t find it. “Boys, you know how badly I need this job,” She looked at us and said. “You have no idea what you have done for me. Thank you so much!”
We went back to the leader and told him what had happened. The leader thought for a moment and then he gave us four more gas cards and a rose to give to the young mom. She was in surprise when we returned with the rose and the cards. “You all have done enough for me. I can’t take anything else from you.” We insisted (坚持), and she finally accepted the gifts.
We have continued the tradition of handing out roses and gas cards for twelve years. The action makes a difference in our lives because we get to take part in something that is bigger than ourselves. If you have a chance, why not have a try?

You must think a computer is the best thing in the world, right? You must think it works at a super speed and can do everything? Well, it’s not! In fact, the brain (大脑) is much more powerful than any super computer! Think about when a glass is just about to fall off the table. Your brain controls everything that you need to do to save that glass from falling. First your eyes check out what’s going on, then tell your brain, and your brain. decides how quickly you need to react, and then your muscles (肌肉) go into action. That is just from your brain. No computer could ever come close to that!
The brain weighs just 3 pounds, but it controls everything you do from thinking, learning, feeling even to breathing and your heart beating. Even though the brain is just 2% of your body weight, it uses around 20% of all your energy in your body. That is a lot for such a small organ (器官). There are about 100 billion tiny (微小的) little cells (细胞) in your brain. There are so many that it would take you over 3,000 years to count them all!
Your brain stops growing when you’re 18, but it actually keeps on developing and learning new things. So your parents are really super smart! You won’t be able to fool them! Believe it or not. your brain NEVER stops working. Even during sleeping, the brain works for long-term memory establishment (建立). It is realized that the brain is the second organ in the body as the heart that never stops during human lives.
So everyone should be proud of such a gift of nature.

Every living thing needs to reproduce (繁殖). In order for plants to reproduce, they have spread their seeds (种子) to other areas. Plants have developed all kinds of ways to do this.
The simplest way is gravity. Many seeds are inside of fruit. When fruit gets too heavy, it falls from a tree to the ground. Sometimes animals will pick up the fruit and drop it in another area. That helps move the seed even farther away. Apples spread this way.
Other plants use wind to spread their seeds. Dandelions (蒲公英) are a good example of this. Dandelion seeds are so light that when wind blows, it carries dandelion seeds to new places. Maple (枫树) seeds also use wind. Their seeds are connected with long, thin leaves that look like wings. When the seed falls from the tree, its “wings” help it fly farther from the tree.
Some animals help plants spread seeds. The animals eat the seeds. While the seed is in the animal’s body, it stays whole. When the seed leaves the animal, it’s in a new place.
Ants also help spread seeds. Some seeds have a special smell that appeals to ants. The ants bring the seeds back to their home, which of course is underground. They only eat part of the seed. They leave the rest of the seed underground. After that, the seed can start growing.
76.When fruit gets heavy enough, it will fall from a tree to the ground because of gravity.
77.Apples can spread seeds by themselves.
78.Wind helps maple seeds to fly farther from the tree.
79.Some animals eat seeds, and it is helpful for seeds to spread.

Festivals are celebrated all around the world. Every festival has its different customs. However, no matter how different they may seem, all over the world, the spirit of sharing joy, thanks, love, or peace is common in all festivals.
Of all the traditional festivals, the harvest (丰收) festival can be found in almost every culture. People celebrate it to show that they are thankful for the year’s food. In ancient Egypt, the harvest festival was celebrated during the springtime—the Egyptian harvest season. It had a parade (游行) and a great large meal with music, dancing, and sports. In North America, Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving Day in October to express their thanks for the harvest and what they have got while Americans celebrate their Thanksgiving Day over a month later.

第二节 应用文写作(本节共10小题;每小题1分,共10分)
The telephone was a 91 (有帮助的) invention that could help people speak to each other soon. The smartphone took this technology further, which could help us hear people in each 92 (角落) of the world. However, a study shows that forty percent of us still like to 93 (联系) by text. I don’t mean we have taken up letter writing again. Although a handwritten letter has a 94 (私密的) touch, yet it’s too slow. But our smartphones allow us to communicate quickly and 95 (直接地). Another study in the UK found most teenagers would like to send a text rather than speak someone nearby.
Sometimes sending a text means we can be clearer to express ourselves, especially with emojis (表情). Also, it’ll be much politer if you’re in a 96 (公开的) place such as on a train. Because of different 97 (背景), texts can be misunderstood if you miss out a speaker’s intonation. Professor Sophie Scott always mentions before the BBC, “We’ll miss what is 98 (准确地) expressed unless we always speak with feelings and intonations (语调).”
Of course, the worst thing to do can’t be 99 (避免) while texting and talking. Who draws your 100 (注意,关注) when two people are communicating with you? It’s then that you have to decide who has the most interesting thing to say!

Across the UK, a group of volunteer motorcyclists are helping hospitals by delivering blood. Angela Brown is one of them. She is on call for 80 hours each month. At very short notice, she can be woken in the night and find herself riding a motorbike with a vital delivery for a hospital. But she’s not an employee of any hospital. She’s just a volunteer, one of the 1,400 advanced qualified riders of the Association of Blood Bikers. Last year, the Association's bikers responded to around 35,000 rapid transport requests from 262 UK hospitals. Besides blood, the bikers also deliver surgical tools and medicine. Brown first discovered blood biking when she was on a course at the institute of advanced motorists. Her trainer was a blood biker. Under his influence, Brown started volunteering as a rider. She later discovered that blood bikers once helped her own nephew, Peter. He received blood delivered by a rider on New Year’s Eve, 2015. Brown says being a blood biker is a way of helping the community and being on the bike at the same time.

My husband was in the Navy (海军). He was always 51 and hardly came home. He had already missed the birth of our son and would miss his first Christmas. We were really 52 by this. It was in late November, my husband happened to be on 53 and had to spend nights on the ship. He said he could return home before Black Friday to celebrate Christmas with family members in advance (提前). Back then we had very little money. 54 , I really wanted to decorate the house a little for Christmas and get us a tiny tree. I maybe had $40 for both a tree and decorations.
