Virginia “Ginger” Hislop,105, recently walked the stage at Stanford University to receive her master’s degree in education for the coursework she completed in 1941.
A smiling Hislop rose to an ovation (鼓掌) on June 16 as she received her degree and master’s hood at the university’s Graduate School of Education diploma ceremony while her family, including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cheered her on.
School dean (院长) Daniel Schwartz described Hislop, who went on to serve as a board member of schools, colleges and universities in Washington state, as a fierce advocate for fairness and the opportunity to learn.
Hislop, a native of Palo Alto, California, earned her bachelor’s degree in education in 1940 from Stanford’s then-School of Education with the plan of earning a master’s degree so she could begin teaching. She was stimulated for an education career by her grandmother, who was a pre-Civil War educator in Kansas, and her aunt, who served as headmaster of a West Los Angeles school. However, her boyfriend at the time, George Hislop, was called to serve in World War II, so the two got married and Virginia Hislop left Stanford after completing her coursework but before handing in her thesis (论文).
Her decision to put obtaining her master’s degree on hold did not pause her commitment to education. Hislop has served on the Yakima School Board of Directors, is a founding board of directors member of Yakima Community College and served for 20 years on the board of Heritage University in Toppenish, Washington. “I think I did good things for our local school system and I helped broaden it out,” she told Stanford University. “For me, this degree is an appreciation of the many years I’ve put in working for the schools in the Yakima area and on different boards.”
“I felt that all the kids should have an opportunity to develop their potential as best they could, and that everybody should have a crack at higher education if they wanted,” Hislop said.

Not many people dream of spending long and cold winters in the Norwegian Arctic. Christiane Ritter, the author of A Woman in the Polar Night, certainly did not. She had been perfectly content to tend to her home in Austria while her husband busied himself up north. But when Hernann Ritter wrote to his wife of wonderful journeys across ice and snow and colored light illuminating (照亮) polar skies, Christiane began to warm to the idea.
Equipped with the latest heating equipment that 1933 had to offer, Ritter boarded a ship and headed north to join her husband in Spitsbergen, Norway. She would not return until the following year. A Woman in the Polar Night, originally published in 1938, is her appealing account of life in the Arctic before, during and after the fjord (峡湾) freezes over.
There is no shortage of distaste written into the first third of the book, and readers will delight in Ritter’s frank impressions and honest remarks. “Spitsbergen is a wonderful country,” says a passenger on Ritter’s ship. “It’s a terrible country,” Ritter thinks to herself. “Nothing but water, fog, and rain.” When she arrives at the “poor hut” meant to be her home for the next several months, she inquires about the bedroom her husband had promised in his letters. The woods to build it have not yet washed ashore, he replies, and instead offers his wife a sleeping bag.
As the “guardian of the hut,” Ritter has to adjust to the challenges of minding a home in the Arctic. She is surprised that her husband and their companion, a Norwegian hunter named Karl, are unbothered by the lack of baking powder in their winter food and horrified by their resolve to “invent” some.
The writing does not focus on battles with violent winds, but charms its reader with its simple directness. Ritter eventually comes to find the polar night attractive, looking like “the dream of a world that is visible before it takes shape as a reality”.
8. What initially made Christiane Ritter consider joining her husband in the Arctic?
A. Her desire to explore new territories.
B. The need to escape the Austrian winter.
C. Her husband’s vivid descriptions of life there.
D. The opportunity to write a book about the region.
9. How did Christiane Ritter feel about Spitsbergen at first?
A. She viewed it as an awful place.
B. She was indifferent to its scenery.
C. She found it attractive and beautiful.
D. She was excited about building her home there.
10 What does the author think of Christiane Ritter’s book?
A. Moving. B. Boring. C. Attractive. D. Complicated.
11. What kind of type is this text?
A. A guidebook. B. An autobiography. C. A news report. D. A book review.
D
Most of us will experience both change and loss in our lives, and in certain situations, we can feel paralyzed by the feelings that accompany these situations. As a grief (悲伤) author, I frequently hear stories of how grief is caused by change.
Both change and grief can be confusing and insecure, leading to feelings of uncertainty and anxiety. After losing my husband, I had a hard time handling my personal life and work, leading to sleepless nights and intense anxiety. I realized later that I needed a plan for each area of my life.
Understanding why we feel confused can help us process change and develop a plan, giving us a sense of control. Fear is common in both grief and change. After losing his wife, famous writer C. S. Lewis wrote, “No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear.” And this fear can be present in both grief and change. Managing feet-related emotions isn’t for the faint of heart.
Coping mechanisms for change and grief may be similar. For instance, people struggling with addiction may relapse (复发) due to strong emotions, using alcohol to comfort themselves. A woman I know relapsed after losing her job, caused by a deep fear of not being able to provide for her family. Our bodies may not recognize the source of fear, responding with the same “fight or flight” response regardless.
Even positive changes, like a new relationship, can cause fear. If a person doesn’t believe they deserve good things, they might mess up their own relationships. We may also be dishonest with ourselves about our true feelings, telling ourselves we should feel happy or relieved to avoid deep pain or sorrow. This dishonesty can be destructive and cause internal chaos.
The most important meeting we’ll ever have is with ourselves. Being honest about our feelings is the first step to feeling better. While we can’t change the past, it’s crucial to acknowledge our feelings. Understanding our emotions allows us to address the root of the problem and move forward.
12. What does the underlined word “paralyzed” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Frozen. B. Relieved. C. Embarrassed. D. Stuck.
13. Why does the author mention her own experience after losing her husband?
A. To show that even professionals can struggle with grief.
B To demonstrate the difficulty of handling personal life during grief.
C. To emphasize the universality of sleepless nights and intense anxiety.
D. To explain how understanding emotions can lead to a sense of control.
14. What does C. S. Lewis say about grief?
A. It is similar to fear. B. It leads to confusion.
C. It requires courage to overcome. D. It can be managed through planning.
15. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Positive changes can cause fear. B. Becoming clear about feelings is important.
C. Being dishonest can cause internal chaos. D. Appreciating feelings allows us to progress.

At just 12 years old, Sidney Vansleve has begun a remarkable journey to transform the lives of homeless individuals, one pair of socks at a time. Her mission, though seemingly simple, holds immense significance — socks, an often-overlooked necessity, are crucial for the well-being of those without a permanent roof over their heads.
“You don’t fully appreciate their importance until you’re forced to go without them for an extended period,” Sidney remarks thoughtfully. This realization dawned upon her after learning about the pressing need for socks among the homeless community, highlighted by the nonprofit organization Hope the Mission. Inspired by this revelation, Sidney decided to team up with Hope the Mission to launch a campaign to collect socks for the homeless.
Her ambitious target? A quarter of a million pairs — an astonishing number that would ensure every client at Hope the Mission receives clean socks for an entire year. “We’re nearly at 200000 pairs, but we need a final push to reach our goal,” shares Rowan Vansleve, the CFO of Hope the Mission and Sidney’s proud father.
Sidney credits her father as her biggest inspiration. “Without him, I wouldn’t have dreamed of doing this,” she admits gratefully. Rowan, equally as touched, responds, “I’m so proud to be her dad; she’s an extraordinary person.”
To facilitate donations, Sidney has set up two convenient methods: contributors can either add to her Amazon wishlist or visit any of the 29 Starbucks locations listed on the Hope of the Valley website. “People can donate in various packs or even just a single pair,” Sidney explains.
With the deadline for sock donations looming (迫近的) on December 27th, Sidney’s ambitions don’t stop there. She aims to make her mark in a different way — by breaking a Guinness World Record.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Before distributing the socks, Sidney wrote a sentence “you are loved” on a note and attached it to each pair.

However, her boyfriend at the time, George Hislop, was called to serve in World War II, so the two got married and Virginia Hislop left Stanford after completing her coursework but before handing in her thesis (论文).

10. What does the author think of Christiane Ritter’s book?
A. Moving. B. Boring. C. Attractive. D. Complicated.
11. What kind of type is this text?
A. A guidebook. B. An autobiography. C. A news report. D. A book review.

B. To demonstrate the difficulty of handling personal life during grief.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. D

The art of planning ahead.
Before pulling on your hiking boots and hitting the trails, make sure that you research and plan your outdoor shoot. ___17___ Morning and evening light is often the best for shooting photos of the natural world, since the light is softer without the harsh (刺眼的) shadows of midday— be prepared to set your alarm to 5 a. m. instead of 8 a. m.

第二节 续写(满分25分)

“We’re nearly at 200,000 pairs, but we need a final push to reach our goal,” shares Rowan Vansleve, the CFO of Hope the Mission and Sidney’s proud father.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Before distributing the socks Sidney wrote a sentence “you are loved” on a note and attached it to each pair.

After the report, donations poured in from all corners of the country.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Before distributing the socks, Sidney wrote a note saying “you are loved” and attached it to each pair. She believed this simple message could bring warmth and hope. “I want them to know that someone cares,” Sidney said. Her team packed the socks carefully, and volunteers handed them out at Hope the Mission. When receiving the socks that were neatly packed, recipients were deeply moved, expressing gratitude. After hearing about her deeds, a local news reporter interviewed her.
After the report, donations flooded in from across the country. News of Sidney’s campaign spread widely, garnering support from social media, celebrities, schools, and businesses. By the deadline, the campaign had collected over 250,000 pairs of socks, not only meeting but exceeding the initial target, but also breaking a Guinness World Record. Sidney’s efforts did not go unnoticed; she received recognition from local government officials and national organizations, further amplifying her message of kindness and support for the homeless community. Sidney’s initiative not only transformed the lives of countless individuals but also inspired a new generation to take action and make a difference in their communities.
