As I held his body, I felt my amazing dog take his very last breath. Hugo, my beautiful 14-year-old German Shepherd, was gone.
I had had other dogs before him, but what I had with Hugo was different. He was born on the night my father died, so I somehow imagined he had come into my life to watch over me. Totally challenging to raise and overly protective of me at times, Hugo forced me to become a more patient, compassionate (有同情心的) person, to work with his problems but also to accept him for who he was. I loved him, and in return he gave me his undying loyalty (忠诚).
During the holiday season, I missed Hugo so terribly. Yes, I had my three other dogs to care for and pet, but the house wasn’t the same. I hurt. When the times were hard, I felt so grateful to the people in my life who understood and could soften my pain. My husband, friends, and family were so kind and understanding, and love, compassion, and care were around me. I had enough support at home to help me through my sadness instead of pity in their eyes or, even worse, comments like, “Well, can’t you just go set another dog?”
Two months later, I am still hurting over the loss of my Hugo. I still look for him in the house at times, thinking he’s right there next to me, eager to give me kisses and calling for my attention. But I am finding ways to honor his memory and focus mostly on the good times we shared. I know if he were alive, he would be the same as the people who love me, wishing me to be better.
4. What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 2?
A. Hugo was a gift from her father. B. It took a long time to change Hugo.
C. Hugo meant a lot to her. D. It was hard for Hugo to accept her.
5. What helped soften the author’s pain of losing Hugo?
A. Support from loved ones. B. Arrival of three other dogs.
C. Changes in the house. D. Comments from her neighbors.
6. What is the author trying to do?
A. Pay more attention to the family. B. Share good memories with Hugo online.
C. Treat other dogs at home as Hugo. D. Take a positive attitude to the life.
7. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Entertainment. B. Life. C. Education. D. Science.

British Virgin founder Richard Branson has never forgotten his favorite teacher and he’s giving 200 Australian teachers a kid-free cruise (乘船游览) this summer on his newly launched Virgin Voyages.
Teachers are being encouraged to recommend themselves for a chance to win a cruise worth up to$10,000. The competition ends on December 15, so teachers have just several days to enter.
Branson, who is famously open about his struggles with dyslexia — a learning disorder that affects reading and language skills — at school, said he had “enormous admiration” for the teaching profession. “My favorite teacher was David Beavers,” he said. “He just happened to be the Scoutmaster as well and that meant that I could get out of school and get out into the countryside.”
“Back in those days, they’d never heard of the word ‘dyslexia’ and they weren’t that great at dealing with that. It’s tough being a teacher; You have 30 people in the class trying to bring out the individuality of everybody and trying to inspire them,” Branson added.
The winning teachers get free tasty meals, essential drinks, entertainment and fitness classes. The cruises depart out of Sydney and Melbourne and sail to Tasmania and New Zealand.
Teacher Nicole Katrib said with increased stress and responsibility, the cruise would relieve teacher burnout.
“Teaching is an incredibly valuable profession and we truly care about our students and setting them up for success in life, but sometimes teachers put their own well-being last,” she said. “Generally, teacher dropout rates are on the rise and teacher shortages are a real problem. I think it’s absolutely amazing that Richard Branson is acknowledging the hard work of teachers and this prize is so fitting. Teachers need their well-being to be looked after so they can return to the classroom re-energized.”
8. Why did Branson decide to offer a cruise for teachers?
A. To reward his former teachers.
B. To advertise his Virgin Voyages.
C. To show his gratitude to teachers.
D. To encourage people to be a teacher.
9. What did Branson suffer from when he was at school?
A. Financial problems. B. Learning difficulty.
C. Lack of friends. D. Poor physical health.
10. What can teachers do during the cruises?
A. Get some medical treatment. B. Enjoy delicious food free.
C. Attend teacher training classes. D. Hold parties with their family.
11. What was Nicole Katrib’s attitude to Branson’s act?
A. Doubtful. B. Disapproving. C. Uncaring. D. Favorable.
D
Everyone wants to feel happier. But sometimes happiness can be elusive (难以得到的). That’s why Yale University created a course about happiness. It was designed and taught by Laurie Santos, a professor of psychology. It was originally named “Psychology and the Good Life” and soon became the university’s most popular course ever!
In 2020, the happiness course went online through the learning site Coursera. Now it has been revised for teens. The six-week free course launched on January 16, 2023 and consists of short TikTok length videos that talk about happiness and mental well-being, and has the goal of achieving both.
In a few days, more than 13,000 teens applied for the course online and to date more than 290,000 people have viewed the course information. The response shows just how necessary this course is. Today’s teens are experiencing feelings of isolation (孤独), depression, and anxiety and more than 37 percent of high school students said they suffered from poor mental health, according to a survey from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Almost half of the students said that they felt continually sad.
According to Santos, teenagers are trying to be happy but are going about it in the wrong ways. The course focuses on the things that these young adults can do and gives them the tools to do so. Some of these include volunteering or doing random act s of kindness for others. Other strategies include how to silence your inner-critic and how to promote self-acceptance. But one of the most important tools for teens is teaching them how to regulate their emotions.
“If we can teach teens to try to make changes to things they can control, they feel more empowered,” Santos said. “If they feel more empowered, they feel more in control of their life. And if they feel more in control of their life, they’re not feeling helpless. Then they don’t tend to be as depressed.”
12. Why did Yale University establish the course about happiness?
A. Happiness is sometimes difficult to get.
B. It hoped to enrich students’ college life.
C. Many college students have mental problems.
D. It wanted to attract more students.
13. What was the reaction of the public to the six-week happiness course?
A. Many people showed interest in it. B. Few teens were willing to cancel it.
C. Some adults raised doubts about it. D. A number of people paid for it.
14. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “regulate” in Para 4?
A. Improve. B. Record. C. Avoid. D. Control.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. A psychology professor.
B. Social problems facing teens.
C. A happiness course adapted for teens.
D. University courses suitable for teens.

第四部分 写作(满分20分)
【46题答案】
【答案】Dear Jim,
I’m pleased that you’re coming to tour in China and I’d like to give you some constructive advice.
First, I recommend that you begin from Zhejiang, especially Shaoxing, a city with a long history, and I’ll show you around. I think it’s a good chance for you to explore the history of this ancient city. Shanghai will be your next stop, where there are also many famous historical and cultural attractions. After that, you can go to Beijing, the capital of China, where you can stay for a week and pay a visit to the Great Wall and other places of interest. You can take high-speed trains to these cities. As summer vacation is high season for tourism, you’d better reserve your tickets and hotels in advance. What’s more, summer in these cities is hot and rainy, so take summer wear plus an umbrella with you. I believe you’ll have an impressive trip!
Looking forward to your arrival. I can’t wait to meet you.
Yours,
Li Hua
