As our world becomes more interconnected, it’s always good to learn another language or two.
Aim for a semester (学期) of straight A
This can be a difficult task but not impossible to achieve, as long as you put in the right amount of work and effort. If you are struggling(挣扎)with your grades, you can host or join group studies with your classmates!
Don’t be disheartened if you are not able to get an A in a semester. What’s important is having the drive to go forward. As a famous person once said, “He who would climb a ladder must begin at the bottom.
Experience another culture
Culture and tradition are something that all humans share. No matter where we come from, we always bring our culture with us. People coming from different cultures may be among your friends or neighbors.
You can go to a museum, read a book, or try new food in your area. Remember to keep an open mind and take the time to learn about them.
Bring a shareable treat to class
If you know your way around the kitchen, you can impress your class by making and bringing them a delicious treat! Not only will this make their stomachs happy, but you’ll also bond (联系) the whole class together. Just don’t forget to check with your teacher first before bringing one.

B
Dr. Degenaar came into the lecture room on the first Friday morning of the term and asked us to write down our own understanding of the “soul”. Here was the “teacher” asking us what we thought — it was really an exciting experience. He was not telling us what he thought but asking us how we saw something. The following discussion was interesting. That was my first experience of real learning in a classroom.
Almost 50 years have passed since that experience. Of the other lecturers who “taught” me during that year, I remember they “taught” me the history of Greek philosophy (哲学), but I remember little of that history and nothing of those lecturers. And most of what I remember about Greek philosophy is what I learned in Dr. Degenaar’s class, for my own interest.
I took further courses with Dr. Degenaar in the following years. Lake the first class, there was little “lecturing” at us, but far more involvement (参与) of us all in a process of common discovery in which we learned a lot about each other and the key points of the day. The excitement of discovery stays with me. Then it took me almost another 20 years to get a deeper understanding of what had happened in that lecture hall: experiential learning.
Traditionally, learners have been seen as “empty containers” waiting to be “filled” with learning given them by the teacher. The learner is, therefore, dependent on the teacher for what to think and how to think. Compliance (遵从) is rewarded and so independent and original thinking is not developed.
In comparison, in experiential learning, the learner is encouraged to think for himself/herself not to repeat the thought patterns of the teacher. The learning happens not because of what a “teacher” or “lecturer” says but because of what the learner does. In this sense, I think this is the best way to learn and everyone should try it and learn from it.
4. Which word best describes the author’s first Greek philosophy class?
A. Boring. B. Amazing. C. Confusing. D. Depressing.
5 Why does the author compare Dr. Degenaar and the other lecturers?
A. To praise Dr. Degenaar’s attitude to his job.
B. To stress Dr. Degenaar’s great influence on him.
C. To point out Dr. Degenaar’s popularity among students.
D. To show the author’s deep interest in Greek philosophy.
6. How does experiential learning differ from traditional learning?
A. It has no specific learning places. B. It applies knowledge to medical care.
C. It encourages independent thinking. D. It focuses more on the result of learning.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. A respected teacher. B. A favorite university lesson.
C. The factors of experiential learning. D. An effective learning method.
C
“Funny or die” has a whole new meaning, thanks to a study published in April in a medical journal. Women with a strong sense of humor were found to live longer although they were ill, especially for those with heart problems and infection (感染). Happy men seemed to be protected against infection.
The researchers reported the findings from a 15-year study on the connection between the sense of humor and death among 53,556 women and men in their country. The team studied the influence of humor on people’s way of thinking, social skills and emotion development, and examined death from different conditions: heart problems, infection and other health problems.
The findings showed that for women, those who had high scores on a humorous way of thinking had a 48 percent less risk of death from all causes, a 73 percent lower risk of death from heart problems and an 83 percent lower risk of death from infection. For men, a connection was found only for the risk of death from infection — those with high humor scores had a 74 percent reduced risk. The researchers suggested the sex differences could be a result of a small decrease (减少) in humor scores as the men aged. No connection was found for the influence of humor on social skills and emotion development.
“The humorous way of thinking plays an important role in people’s personality and may make a difference to the way people deal with everyday life,” said study co-researcher Sven Svebak. “In this way, it may help reduce fighting in daily life, preventing the build-up of stress.” Although the sense of humor is a natural characteristic (特征), it can also be developed through social activities.
“I expect that children whose parents have no sense of humor when feeling challenges are less likely to develop their sense of humor to deal with everyday life when they grow up,” Sven Svebak said. “But if you had a humorless childhood, never fear — studies show people can learn to be humorous at any age.”
8 What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Humor could positively impact people’s health.
B. Joyful women can live longer than happy men.
C. Women who hardly laugh may fall ill easily.
D. Humor makes people pay more attention to their health.
9. The reason for men having a higher risk of death from infection than women is that ________.
A. men have poor memories as they age.
B. men become less humorous as they grow older.
C. men have bad sleeping quality as they grow older.
D. men take part in fewer social activities as they age.
10. How does the author show the research findings?
A. By listing data. B. By giving examples.
C. By stating arguments (论点). D. By making experiments.
11. Which of the following would Sven Svebak agree with?
A. Humorless people have an unhappy childhood.
B. Children must learn to be humorous at an early age.
C. Humorous people can better deal with pressure in life.
D. Parents with a sense of humor are better at child education.

Sorry to learn that you are having trouble in communicating with your classmates, I’m writing to give you a helping hand.
I quite understand your depression, since it is quite common for a shy student like you to have difficulty associating with others. Probably, your classmates just feel unsure whether you’re interested in their topics. To help you out, I highly suggest you step out of comfortable zone and take an active part in after-class activities where you can naturally establish a closer relationship and find common talking materials.
Hopefully, you can find your problem solved soon!
Yours
LiHua.
