Four Unique U.S. National Parks
Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky
This national park is the site of the longest known cave system in the world, which is really proper for a park called “Mammoth(猛犸象).” It’s the ideal place for an adventure lover, with about 400 miles of caves and tunnels to explore. One of the most popular sections to visit within the caves is called Frozen Niagara, a special part of the caves that looks like a waterfall frozen in time.
Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida
Even though it’s one of the least-visited national parks in the country, it’s definitely one of the best national parks in Florida. There’s no accounting for Dry Tortugas National Park’s amazing beauty. Located about 70 miles from Key West, this park is made up of several islands that feature blue waters and white-sand beaches, colorful marine life, and the historic Fort(堡垒) Jefferson, one of the largest 19th-century forts in U.S. history.
Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah
If you’re looking for interesting red and pink rocks, you can’t do better than Bryce Canyon. The national park is known for its fascinating rock formations and hoodoos(石林), as well as its starry skies at night. Some of the best places to visit in the park are the Natural Bridge, Fairyland Canyon, or any of the scenic viewpoints throughout the park.
Death Valley National Park, California and Nevada
It’s the hottest and driest national park in the country, but it’s also a place of beautiful desert views and interesting natural phenomena, like the sailing stones on the Racetrack Playa. Depending on where you are in the park the climate can be extreme — it’s home to snowy mountains, dry desert, colorful flower fields, and cool lakes. You might also recognize it as the planet of Tatooine from the original Star Wars movies.

Like many of us, Marilyn Hacker and Karthika Nair were two friends separated from each other by the pandemic (流行病).
They live in Paris and are both poets. Before the pandemic, they spent lots of time on the road. Hacker was meant to be teaching in Lebanon and had to return home suddenly when the cases stared rising. And Nair, who is a dancer and usually on tour, was diagnosed with lung cancer just as France announced a lockdown (封锁) .
“I had gone through chemotherapy (化疗) myself some years ago, so it was not an experience that was entirely strange to me,” Hacker says, adding that they both also live alone. “I wanted to reach out and connect with somebody with whom I had something in common.”
The two poets wrote a book together, out this month, called A Different Distance. It includes almost daily poems from March 2020 to March 2021. Hacker says she approached Nair with the idea of writing the book. As the poets responded to each other through poetry over email, Nair says, the project strengthened her friendship with Hacker. “I was afraid of my brain shutting down because chemotherapy was very heavy on me, and the possibility of maintaining a creative teamwork was just so precious.”
Normally, Hacker would like to keep Nair company to her hospital appointments and take her to lunch afterward, but under lockdown, they had to settle for meeting each other online. The poetry details not only of Nair’s illness but of what the poets were eating, reading, or listening to when isolated (隔离). They write of friends and family they lost along the year, and news they were hearing about across the world.
And as a time capsule for the pandemic, A Different Distance shows how healing it can be to hold each other close in times of distress.
4. What do Hacker and Nair have in common?
A. They were capable of writing poems.
B. They felt excited for the separation.
C. They were not affected by the pandemic.
D. They lived with family members in Paris, France.
5. What can we learn about Hacker during the pandemic?
A. She was eager to communicate with friends.
B. She did not want to accompany Nair to hospital.
C. She was diagnosed with lung cancer.
D. She didn’t experience chemotherapy before.
6. What does the underlined word “distress” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Happiness. B. Encouragement.
C. Sadness. D. Loneliness.
7. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Two Brilliant Poets: Hacker and Nair
B. A Book Introduction: A Different Distance
C. How to Deal with Pandemic and Cancer Properly
D. Poets’ Friendship and Loneliness During the Pandemic

To celebrate the spring in Rome, they sometimes eat vignarola. Vignarola is a vegetable stew (炖菜)mixed with all things green and new. It once meant the beginning of the new season after the hungry gap of late winter. But in a time when frozen peas are available all year round, the dish’s amazing spring freshness no longer means as much.
Our modern food system has been able to supply us with the freshness of spring all year round, but before refrigeration (冷藏)and modern methods of agriculture, even butter and eggs were seasonal foods. However, how often do you ever taste something truly fresh? If you look closely, you’ll likely find much of the produce at your local supermarket isn’t quite as fresh as you thought. I recently met a British farmer who produces salad greens. He told me he can taste a big difference between a leaf that is a day old and one that is three days old and that, by five days, the taste is greatly dulled, despite the leaves still looking green and bright. Because of this, the average shopper is none the wiser in regard to the freshness of produce. The same goes for much of the food you buy. The label says “fresh” but what this actually means is something closer to “not rotten (腐烂的).”
Our entire food supply is based on the idea of “fresh” and “keeping things fresh”. But to keep things fresh is a kind of cheat because something can only truly be considered fresh when it has just been taken out of the ground or has just been cooked. The “fresh” food and drink in our supermarkets has often been on an amazingly long journey in the global cold chain before it reaches us. Many refrigerated foods can be labeled as “fresh” even if they are weeks old, and fruit can still be “fresh” after being irradiated (辐照)or after having received a wax coating.
It may be impossible to check true freshness in food, but you know it when you taste it. A couple of years ago, a friend served me a simple dish of boiled potatoes that were so fresh and waxy that every other potato I’d ever eaten seemed tasteless in my memory.
8. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. Supermarkets only sell things that are truly fresh.
B. Supermarkets always teach shoppers how to choose fresh produce.
C. Many people can actually tell whether supermarket produce is fresh or not.
D. The British farmer could find a huge difference between truly fresh greens and “fresh” greens.
9. Why does the author say “to keep things fresh is a kind of cheat” in paragraph 3?
A. Because many kinds of drinks are made from concentrate.
B. Because it’s impossible for the modern food system to keep food fresh.
C. Because it often takes a long time before “fresh” food appear in your local supermarket.
D. Because consumers typically aren’t able to tell whether the food on sale is fresh or not.
10. According to the author, what’s the most reliable way to tell whether food is fresh or not?
A. Make it. B. Taste it.
C. Smell it. D. Boil it.
11. How does the author end the passage?
A. By telling stories of her friends.
B. By introducing traditional foods.
C. By showing examples of traditional fresh food.
D. By sharing her experience of eating truly fresh food.

It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put my headphones on? I think better that way.” But is that really true? Does music help concentrate?
Research offers little to support the idea that listening to music improves concentration. In one small study, 133 students performed reading tasks while listening to either light music, hip hop, or no music at all. Students who performed the reading tasks in silence scored the highest. Music with a higher intensity (强度) like hip hop was more distracting and had a bad effect on task performance.
Volume (音量) plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration. The type of music didn’t matter. Data from the study showed once again that silence was the best environment to improve concentration.
However, music has a positive effect on work performance. Studies have showed that listening to music leads to positive changes in mood, as well as creativity. In fact, in music-listening cultures, which students are certainly part of, there’s actually a change in mood when the music is taken away.
It’s hard to persuade my students that music doesn’t help with their concentration. Taj, a senior told me, “I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply. I don’t have writer’s block. It’s easy for me to put my words on paper.”
“Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me. “You could actually be singing along with what you’re listening to and doing well in math.”
12. What does the underlined word “distracting” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Causing great excitement.
B. Driving someone’s attention away.
C. Making something attractive.
D. Making someone feel frightened.
13. What can we learn from the small study?
A. The volume of music affects concentration.
B. Music can’t enhance people’s mood and creativity.
C. Different types of music lead to different performances.
D. Students do well in reading tasks while listening to music.
14. What do Taj and Danela have in common?
A. They believe music helps concentration in any case.
B. They use music to help with their paper- writing.
C. They can’t focus on reading while listening to music.
D. They don’t listen to music while doing writing problems.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Should Students Listen to Music? B. Does Music Help Concentration?
C. Is Music Related to Reading? D. Can Music Change Reading Style?

【答案】Dear Jack,
Thrilled to know that you are planning to visit Chongqing during the winter vacation, I’m writing to extend my warm welcome and offer my practical suggestions.
Before your trip, make sure to pack warm clothes considering that it is cold here in winter. In addition, you’d better book your tickets and hotel in advance, as they can get fully booked during the holidays. As for tourist attractions, I strongly recommend visiting the Hongyadong, which is a cultural and historical landmark located by the Jialing river, featuring traditional wooden houses, narrow alleys and bustling riverfront market. Another must-see is the Guanyinqiao business circle, where there are a lot of authentic snacks belonging to Chongqing and worth a taste. Apart from the snacks, hot pot is a must one that can’t be missed.
I hope these suggestions will be useful to you. Wish you a pleasant and memorable journey!
Yours,
Li Hua
