C On Saturday, August 24, 1918, it was raining cats and dogs and thundering over a city called Sunderland on the northeast coast of England. The storm lasted for only about ten minutes. People were surprised to see that it was not just rainwater falling from the sky. There were fish falling down, too! People came out to find out what was happening. They could not believe their own eyes. There were thousands of fish—sand eels (沙鳗)—lying on the ground. They were about seven centimeters long, and all were frozen dead. Sand eels swim together in large groups, often in sandy water, and are often found in large numbers in the North Sea, which reaches out to the east of Sunderland. How was it possible for these sand eels to fall from the sky and land on Sunderland? Scientists believed the heavy thunderstorm that afternoon may have caused a waterspout (水龙卷). Waterspout s can be formed when strong winds move quickly in a circle over water. They are so powerful that anything less than one meter in length can be taken into them and forced into the clouds. The clouds carry whatever has been taken into them for long distances —sometimes over 150 kilometers. It’s very cold up there and everything soon freezes. For hundreds of years there have been reports of small animals being taken into the sky through waterspouts. In 2009 dead tadpoles rained down on the city of Nanao in Japan. In 2012, fifty kilos of prawns fell from the sky over Sri Lanka. In 2017, fish fell on the coastal city of Tampico in Mexico. It must be a very strange experience to see fish raining down on you. It would probably hurt if one fell on your head! With climate change and many reports of terrible storms, will the time ever come when it may really begin to rain cats and dogs? 8. What do we know about the sand eels that landed on Sunderland? A. They were few in number. B. They came in different sizes. C. They were still alive when landing. D. They probably came from the North Sea. 9. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. Clouds. B. Waterspouts. C. Sand eels. D. Thunderstorms. 10. Why does the author mention the fall of tadpoles in Japan? A. To stress the environment is not pleasant in Japan. B. To introduce waterspouts can reach as far as Japan. C. To show that raining sea animals is not new in history. D. To explain different animals can fall in different countries. 11. What is the author really worried about in the last paragraph? A. Health. B. Environment. C. Wild animals. D. Travel safety. D Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps an older person company and helps them remember to take their medicine. That is the shared dream of the toy maker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The researchers received a $3-million-dollar award from the National Science Foundation for a special project. They want to find ways to add artificial intelligence or AI, to Hasbro’s “Joy for All” robotic cat. The cat has already been for sale for two years. Though priced at over 1,000 dollars, it sold quite well. It was meant to act as a “companion” (陪伴) for older people. Now the project is aimed at developing additional abilities for the cat. Researchers are working to decide which activities older adults may need the most. They hope to make the cat perform a small number of activities very well. Such activities include finding lost objects and reminding the older people to take medicine or visit their doctor. They also want to keep the cost down to just a few hundred dollars. It is an idea that is attractive to Jeanne Elliott. Her 93-year-old mother Mary Derr lives with her in South Kingstown. Derr has dementia (痴呆). The Joy for All cat that Elliot bought this year has become a true companion for Derr. The cat stays with Derr and keeps her relaxed while Elliett is at work. Elliot said a robotic cat that helps her mother to remember to take her medicine and be careful when she walks would be greater. The researchers are dying to learn how the improved cats will complete helpful activities and how they will communicate. They say that they do not want a talking cat, however. Instead they are trying to design a cat that can move its head in a special way to successfully communicate its message. In the end, they hope to create an exchange between the human and the cat in which the human feels the cat needs them. By doing so, the researchers hope they can even help prevent feelings of loneliness and sadness among elderly people. 12. What’s the purpose of the project? A. To reduce the pain of the elderly. B. To invent a robotic cat for the elderly. C. To increase the sales of a medicine. D. To help make the robotic cat smarter. 13 What can we know about the cat? A. It will be on sale in two years. B. It may be cheaper in the future. C. Its abilities will be made simpler for the elderly. D. It can tell the activities older adults need the most. 14. What does the example in Paragraph 3 show? A. The cat gives much help to the elderly. B. The cat can satisfy most patients’ need. C. The cat works well to talk with the patient. D. The cat can make the dementia patient happy. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. Updating AI: The Future of Robotics B. Improving Companionship: The Joy for All Project C. Affordable Technology: Bringing AI to Every Home D. Silent Communication: The Language of Robotic Cats 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Keep Building Your Vocabulary No educative process is ever the end. It is always the beginning of more education and more learning. ___16___ The following are the ways that can help to keep your vocabulary growing and growing. Read more. As an adult, you will find most of the sources of your supply of new words in books and magazines. If your aim is to have a superior vocabulary, you will have to make the time to read at least one book and several magazines every week. Not just this week and next week — but every week. ___17___ Guess the meaning of a new word in the context (语境). When you meet with an unfamiliar word, do not skip over it impatiently. ___18___ Then work out its possible meaning in the context of the sentence. Whether you come to the right conclusion or not will make a difference because you are, in this process, becoming more clearly aware of the word. As a result, you will, suddenly notice that this very word pops up unexpectedly again and again in all your reading. And of course after you’ve seen it a few times, you will know fairly well not only what it means but the many ways it can be used. ___19___ Think of the areas that may possibly be unknown to you — psychology, science, art, music or whatever. Then explore them by reading books in the fields. In every field, there are books written for average, untrained readers that will give you both a good knowledge and at the same time add dramatically to your vocabulary. Set yourself a goal. If you do nothing about your vocabulary, you will learn, at most, twenty-five to fifty words in a year. ___20___ This may sound ambitious (雄心勃勃的) — but you will discover vocabulary snowball as soon as you start actively looking for new words. A. Get prepared in advance. B. Open you mind to new fields. C. And so it is with vocabulary building. D. You must be willing to learn new words. E. I have never seen a single person with a rich vocabulary who is not a book addict. F. Instead, stop for a moment and read it aloud to get used to its sound and appearance. G. But my story is of a storm that gave me more than I’d thought to ask for. The tornado(龙卷风)blew through on a Sunday. We were visiting grandparents in Raleigh then unaware that seventy miles away the big tree in our front yard was tearing through our roof and destroying the kitchen. When we returned, we saw Rosica’s father and brothers in our yard, gathering debris(碎片)and using a chain saw to cut the thickest branches of the fallen tree, though we barely knew them then. They were covered in sweat and dirt. My mom didn’t seem to notice how happy they were to help us because the first thing she said was “Oh, you don’t need to be doing all that work!” Mr. Flores laughed.“Claro! Of course, we don’t. But more importantly, you cannot sleep in that house tonight. Come and speak to my wife. She’ll help you figure out what to do.” My mom doesn’t usually let people tell her what to do, but she sighed(叹气)deeply as she took in the sight of our home in the failing light, reached for my hand, and followed our neighbor to their house. The Flores family lived across the street. Their home was the same size as ours but housed three generations. Rosica was my age. I knew her name and face, but since she was new to our school, and had a different teacher than I did, we had never spoken. It was she who answered the door.“Mama is changing the sheets on the bed for you, and there’s some lemon cheesecake on the table.” “Please don’t trouble yourself. I think I’d call a hotel and see about a room,” my mom said, more uneasy than usual. Mrs. Flores came down the stairs and smiled at us warmly, “Y our room is ready. I know it’s more encouraged to give than receive, but allow yourself to receive a place to stay, and allow us the chance to give you something you need!” 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右: 2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: Our two-week stay at Flores’s home started. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Following our stay in their home, a beautiful tradition began. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 赣州三中2024-2025学年度第一学期期中考试 高一英语试卷 第一部分 听力 (共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项,并标在试卷的相应位置。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段对话仅读一遍。 1. They are so immersed in their academic studies that they have little time for exercise. Regular exercise plays a vital role in our lives. Physically, it helps build up our strength, enhance our immunity, and improve our physical coordination and flexibility. Mentally, it is an excellent way to relieve stress and anxiety. After a tiring study session, a short jog or a game of badminton can make us feel relaxed and refreshed. Therefore I advocate that students should spare more time for exercise. We can choose the sport we like, such as running or playing basketball. Let’s embrace a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise. 第二节 (满分25分) 【47题答案】 【答案】 Our two-week stay at Flores’s home started. In the beginning, my mom was very uneasy and thought that living here could be a trouble for the family. She would help them with the housework as much as possible. The family were very friendly to us. They always said to us that, “Be at home!” They not only prepared everything we needed for us, but also cooked us delicious food, trying their best to make us feel at home. Gradually, we became familiar with each other just like a family. With Thanksgiving Day coming, our house was still under repair, which meant that we had to celebrate the festival with the family. Following our stay in their home, a beautiful tradition began. On Thanksgiving Day, we together made a big dinner. My mom roasted the turkey which was popular with everyone. During the dinner, my mom extended her thanks to the family. “Thank you! I really don’t know what to say, but really thank you!” “Friends need no thanks!” said Mrs. Flores. We all laughed and enjoyed the dinner with joy and gratitude. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
