She said, “I’ve waited a long time for it.” A few days later, Leverton took her first ballet class after seeing an advertisement in a newspaper. It showed older women dancing in a class near Leverton’s house. “As I came in the door, I found a big smile on my face. From the minute I started, I felt like coming home.” Leverton had longed to dance as a child. Sadly, her parents couldn’t afford ballet classes, for they were first-generation Indian immigrants, struggling to make a living in the UK. Her father was a train driver on the underground in London and her mother held two cleaning jobs. However, she harboured her dream of being a ballerina At her present age, a grand plie—lowering to the floor with bent knees seemed to be out of the question. It took her three months to master the move: leaping and landing on one foot. “I love the struggle and the challenge of learning something new. People in their 60s have a lot of self-limiting beliefs: ‘I can’t do it,’ ‘I’m not good enough.’ And maybe they’re not good enough. But it doesn’t matter,” she said. Ballet has been transformative At a medical appointment a few months after Leverton’s first class, a nurse measured her at 163 cm, half an inch taller than she had thought. She attributes (归因) the difference to improved posture. Her muscle tone has improved and her lower back pain has stopped. Dancing has also brought new friends. She met a group of older, more independent women and worked together towards a team award with the Royal Academy of Dance. And then, of course, there is the joyful feeling.“Ballet is all the therapy (治疗) I’ll ever need,” said Leverton. 4. How Leverton been feeling about taking a ballet class? A. Shy. B. Confident. C. Excited. D. Annoyed. 5. Why did Leverton fail to take a ballet class in her youth? A. Her parents prevented her from doing so. B. The ballet class was unaffordable for her family. C. She had to hold two cleaning jobs. D. Her family was busy immigrating to the UK. 6. What did dancing bring to Leverton? A. Health and friendship. B. A team award. C. Well-paid work. D. Fame and wealth. 7. What can be learned from Leverton’s story? A. Hard work pays off. B. Never too old to pursue dreams. C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Interest is the path to success. C A group of researchers has come up with a way to make it easier to drive in the snow: by designing tyres (轮胎) based on polar bear paws. “We had an ongoing project for many years focused on ice,” said Ali Dhinojwala, who took part in the research.“We were looking at the friction (摩擦力) of materials because our national partners need to develop tyres with a strong grip on the road in ice and snow conditions.” The team turned to nature for inspiration, thinking that evolution might have already solved the problem in a way that could be copied with technology. The obvious place to look was polar bears — specifically the tiny bumps (凸块) on the surface of their paw pads — to find out what effect they have on the animals’ ability to move quickly across icy and snowy area. To do this, the team gathered samples (样本) of polar bear paw pads, as well as samples from brown bears and American black bears (two species closely related to polar bears) and sun bears (a distantly related species, typically found in Asia). The team imaged the samples using a scanning electron microscope, produced 3D-printed copies and then tested them in snow in the lab. They found that the tiny structures on the polar bear paw pads were taller, which gave them better friction on the snow, even though polar bears have smaller pads compared to other bears. The team now wants to look into other factors that may have an effect, such as the patterns and shapes of the tiny structures. “If you look at snow tyres, you’ll see that they do have some deeper treads (外胎花纹), but this research could also show various ways to design them that could have a larger impact,” said Dhinojwala. 8. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. Tiny bumps. B. Polar bears. C. Snowy roads. D. Paw pads. 9. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about? A. The finding of the research. B. The background of the research. C. The comparison of different bear pads. D. The differences of samples in the lab. 10. What can we infer from Dhinojwala’s words in the last paragraph? A. Snow tyres that have deeper treads can be safe enough. B. Different treads might be designed on the snow tyres. C. The researchers should have turned to other bears for inspiration. D. The design of snow tyres requires no further improvement. 11. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. An Ongoing Project Focused on Ice B. An Easier Way to Drive in the Snow C. A New Research on Polar Bear Paw Pads D. Snow Tyres Based on Polar Bear Paws D San Francisco’s waterfront (海滨) is on the National Register of Historic Places for good reason. Its beautiful old landmarks, like the Ferry Building and the Bay Bridge, have been seen in many books, TV shows and movies — from the stories and novels of Jack London to the 1970s TV series The Streets of San Francisco. The future of San Francisco’s waterfront, however, isn’t safe. In 2016, the National Trust for Historic Preservation put part of the city’s shoreline on its list of the US’s most endangered historic places, in part because of the threat of sea level rise. The waterfront landmarks of many cities are under increasing threat from floods and rising sea levels brought on by human-driven climate change. St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy and the Venice Beach boardwalk in Los Angeles face similar challenges to San Francisco. “The whole issue of climate change and historic preservation intersects (交织) right at the waterfront,” said Elaine Forbes, director of the Port of San Francisco. As she watched the boats come and go on a sunny afternoon, Forbes said,“Sea level rise hasn’t historically been as much of a threat to San Francisco as major earthquakes.” However, that’s changed. Parts of the main road that runs along the waterfront have flooded from heavy rains in recent years. The state estimates (预估) the water could rise up to about two and a half feet above its present level by 2060, and possibly up to seven feet by the turn of the century. Now, San Francisco is considering measures to save its historic shoreline. But the growing magnitude (震级) and frequency of the climate-related threats, the high costs and effort needed in saving heritage sites, and competing ideas about what’s worth saving and what isn’t, can make it hard for cities to know what to do first. 12. What is San Francisco’s waterfront famous for? A. Crowded beaches. B. Old landmarks. C. Comfortable climate. D. Beautiful bridges. 13. What challenge is the waterfront facing? A. The threat from rising sea levels. B. The loss of public support. C. The competition from other cities D. The influence of tourist activities. 14. Why is the earthquake mentioned in Paragraph 4? A. To stress the seriousness of sea level rise. B. To give an example of existing threats. C. To show the difficulty in the waterfront protection. D. To compare different types of natural disasters. 15. What can be known from the text? A. Threats have been removed. B. Heritage sites are in ruins. C. Solutions are under consideration. D. The shoreline has been flooded. Fear is a powerful feeling. We hope we can improve our kids with courage in the face of fear. My shocked fifth-graders were discussing a reading story about a boy who was not going to be getting anything for his birthday because money was tight that year. Even though this class was very open during reading discussions, Jace’s honesty surprised even me. What was even more eye-opening was the fact that this sweet, fifth-grade boy had gone ten years and never experienced the joy and surprise of receiving a present. I searched my mind for a reason that he might be saying this. Did he want attention from his peers? No, that was definitely not his style. Was he exaggerating? Again, he was not the type. Then I remembered his story. His mother was out of the picture and he lived alone with his dad. His father had a hard time holding down a job, and coming to think of it, I didn’t see his father at registration or parent-teacher conferences. Even though on the outside Jace was a bit untidy, he always came to school with a smile and sincere enthusiasm for learning. A couple of weeks after Jace’s comment, he was absent from school due to the fact that he had moved away. This happened to be the day I was sending home the annual note about the classroom Christmas gifts exchange. Traditionally, each boy was to bring a gift for a boy in the three-dollar range and the same was true for each girl. As we were discussing the specifics, a girl raised her hand and sincerely suggested that we do away with our traditional policy, and each buy a gift for Jace instead. The enthusiasm grew as the students discussed the kinds of things they knew Jace would like. We took a quick vote and consistently agreed to go ahead with this wonderful idea. Paragraph 1: Days before our Christmas vacation, the gifts began to pour in. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: As I drove down his road, I saw a light flashing, signaling which home was his. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力1~5 ACCAC 6~10 BBABC 11~15 AABCA 16~20 ABCBC 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 建平县实验中学2024~2025学年度上学期高二期中考试 英语 全卷满分150分,考试时间120分钟。 How much is the shirt? She said putting her feet into the soft leather was very emotional. 4. C 5. B 6. A 7. At a medical appointment a few months after Leverton’s first class, a nurse measured her at 163 cm, half an inch taller than she had thought. She attributes (归因) the difference to improved posture. Her muscle tone has improved and her lower back pain has stopped. Dancing has also brought new friends.(芭蕾舞具有变革性。 故选A。 根据第一段“Tina Leverton was 62 when she bought her first pair of ballet shoes.(Tina Leverton62岁时买了她的第一双芭蕾舞鞋。)” B。 C A group of researchers has come up with a way to make it easier to drive in the snow: by designing tyres (轮胎) based on polar bear paws. 8 What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. Tiny bumps. B. Polar bears. C. Snowy roads. D. Paw pads. 9. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about? A The finding of the research. D The design of snow tyres requires no further improvement. 11. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. An Ongoing Project Focused on Ice B. An Easier Way to Drive in the Snow C. A New Research on Polar Bear Paw Pads D. Snow Tyres Based on Polar Bear Paws 【答案】8. A 9. A 10. B 11. 根据第二段“The obvious place to look was polar bears — specifically the tiny bumps (凸块) on the surface of their paw pads — to find out what effect they have on the animals’ ability to move quickly across icy and snowy area.(最明显研究对象是北极熊——特别是它们脚掌表面的小凸起——来发现它们对动物在冰雪地区快速移动的能力有什么影响。)” 故选A。 根据第四段“They found that the tiny structures on the polar bear paw pads were taller, which gave them better friction on the snow, even though polar bears have smaller pads compared to other bears.(他们发现北极熊脚垫上的微小结构更高,这使得它们在雪地上有更好的摩擦力,尽管北极熊的脚垫比其他熊小。)” 故选A。 根据最后一段““If you look at snow tyres, you’ll see that they do have some deeper treads (外胎花纹), but this research could also show various ways to design them that could have a larger impact,” said Dhinojwala.(“如果你看看雪地轮胎,你会发现它们确实有一些更深的外胎花纹,但这项研究也可以展示各种设计方法,这些方法可以产生更大的影响,”Dhinojwala说)”可知,我们可以从最后一段Dhinojwala的话中推断出雪地轮胎可能会设计不同的外胎花纹。 根据第一段“A group of researchers has come up with a way to make it easier to drive in the snow: by designing tyres (轮胎) based on polar bear paws.(一组研究人员提出了一种使在雪地里开车更容易的方法:用北极熊的爪子设计轮胎。)” D San Francisco’s waterfront (海滨) is on the National Register of Historic Places for good reason. 12. B 13. A 14. A 15. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Paragraph 1: Days before our Christmas vacation, the gifts began to pour in. Students with bright eyes would eagerly tell me how they found the “perfect gift”. One student bought a complete art set, knowing Jace loved to draw. Another found toy aliens, remembering a paper Jace had written about aliens. I was amazed by their thoughtfulness and knew I couldn’t let them or Jace down. I found my information sheet and called the number listed. There was no response despite my continuous efforts. On Christmas Eve, I decided to try one last time. Amazingly, Jace answered the phone! The next thing was to drive to his home. Paragraph 2: As I drove down his road, I saw a light flashing, signaling which home was his. It took several trips back and forth to my car to get the gifts inside. Eyes fixed on the piles of carefully wrapped gifts, joy mingled with gratitude was written on his face. Unforgettable was Jace’s joyful smile that lit up the sky like a string of twinkle lights. Thinking about my thoughtful students and how excited I was to tell them about finding Jace, I had a smile of my own, and was thankful to be a part of one of the most important “lessons” of their lives. 词汇激活 行为类 ①回忆:remember/ recall/ recollect ②知道、意识到:know/ recognize/ be conscious of/ be aware of ③尝试:try/ attempt/ have a try 情绪类 ①开心的笑:joyful smile/ happy smile/ elated smile/ merry smile ②让某人失望:let sb. down/ disappoint sb./ frustrate sb. 1】Another found toy aliens, remembering a paper Jace had written about aliens.(运用了现在分词remembering作原因状语和省略关系代词的限制性定语从句) 【高分句型2】Unforgettable was Jace’s joyful smile that lit up the sky like a string of twinkle lights.
