(23-24高二上·江苏盐城·期末)This summer we witnessed interview teams at the North Pole wearing short sleeve shirts due to the warm weather. A study published on Aug 29 revealed more concerning issues in the supposedly coldest area of the world. Zombie ice from a massive Greenland ice sheet was confirmed to be melting, which would eventually raise global sea levels by at least 10 inches (27 centimeters) on its own, reported Associated Press (AP).
Zombie ice is the kind of ice that is still attached to thicker areas of ice but is no longer getting fed by larger glaciers. Since glaciers are getting less snow to make up for the amount of ice melted, once the zombie ice is melted, it cannot be re-formed.
Scientists decided to look at the balance of the ice. In perfect equilibrium (平衡), snow in the mountains of Greenland flows down and thickens the sides of glaciers, balancing out what’s melting on the edges, according to AP. But in the last few decades, there is less refill and more melting, creating an imbalance.
Study co-author William Colgan at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland told AP that 3.3 percent of Greenland’s total ice volume will melt eventually. “Starying would be a good phrase” for what’s happening to the ice, Colgan added.
With a great number of natural resources buried under the earth, areas of melted ice revealed treasures that attracted the world’s richest men. According to CNN, in early August, there was a “treasure hunt” in Greenland. Billionaires, including Bill Gates and others, financially backed KoBold Metals, a US-based mineral exploration company, to explore the rare metals under the glaciers in Greenland. The company told CNN that since there were enough minerals to power hundreds of millions of electric vehicles, the critical resource is capable of powering the green energy transition.
While investors are taking advantage of global warming, experts express their concerns that the mineral exploration is likely to worsen the local environment, running out of the world’s resources at a faster rate.

(23-24高二上·广东茂名·期末)Grace and her family thought they had lost Thor forever when they moved to Windsor, Nova Scotia from British Columbia last August.
“We probably spent seven or eight months looking for Thor,” Grace said. “What made it worse was that there were rumors (谣言) going around that there was dogfighting in our area. We still always hoped that somebody had taken him to be a pet, but you just never knew.”
“It was terrible. My daughter Bronwyn would try to find Thor everywhere, which had been a Christmas present for her. Even while watching TV programmes, she would say, ‘Oh, look! That dog looks like Thor!’” Grace said. Then the family moved, and the hope became impossible.
But one day, the phone rang. It was their former vet in British Columbia, saying Thor was in a rescue shelter (收容所) in High River, Alberta. He had been found at a work camp in the northern part of the place and taken to south by a man planning to keep him. But the man was forced to turn him over to the shelter when he couldn’t keep Thor in his rented home. Luckily, the ring on Thor’s neck gave people some information.
Thor was flown to Nova Scotia last week. The family picked him up at the airport. “Thor was just lying in his box and looking down, and my daughter walked over and said, ‘Hey Thor.’ He immediately stood up, trying to greet my daughter. (23-24高二上·广东深圳·期末)Many people are fascinated by the idea of being a journalist. They get to travel to different places, meet different people, and share their thoughts with a large audience. Peng Yixuan, studying digital media at the Communication University of China, has been a video journalist at China Daily for almost five years.
Peng is well-known for her vlogs recording big national events and taking the audience along for the ride. But the process of his becoming a famous vlogger was quite accidental. “When I came up with the idea of recording two sessions in the form of a vlog with just my phone in 2019, the others on my team felt unsure about it,” Peng said. “But we decided to give it a try, and it went viral.”
Compared with traditional media journalists, those in new media are “almighty (全能的)”. “From Script (脚本) writing to video editing, we need to be competitive in each step of the video-making process,” Peng said. “We also need to react fast to the latest news and think of what young people are curious about. Bringing the serious-natured national event closer to ordinary people is what I believe to be the reason for success.
Also, it’s important to “care”. Peng said that only when you actually care about the people and the topic you are covering will you make the interviewees open up and touch the hearts of your audience. “I’m an ENFP-an extroverted (外向的) person. I’m always curious about the lives of others and want to engage with them,” she said. Once, Peng tried to interview an ambassador. She saw him reject many journalists before her. “I knew I couldn’t simply ask him to do the interview.” Instead, she said, “Your outfit is so cool! Are these traditional clothes from your country?” That’s what got him to start talking to her.
Peng’s job makes her see the necessity and power of international communication. “I can feel the changes in Chinese media over the past few decades,” Peng said. “We went from telling stories from abroad to telling the world our stories. As a journalist, it’s my honour to be a part of it.”

(23-24高二上·广东揭阳·期末)August 24, 2023 may be imprinted in history as the day of disaster for the marine environment. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has asked Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the operator of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, to release nuclear wastewater into the ocean from Thursday, ignoring strong objections from both home and abroad.
It will be a public crime if the discharge goes through and the decision will prove to be extremely unrewarding. The international community can hold Japan accountable indefinitely.
According to Paris-based French TV network France 24, some 1.34 million tonnes of nuclear wastewater, equivalent to almost the water in 540 Olympic pools, will be released into the ocean off Japan’s northeast coast, at a maximum rate of 500 cubic meters per day. The whole process is expected to take 30 to 40 years and cost around eight trillion yen (55 billion USD).
Junichi Matsumoto, the TEPCO executive in charge of the water release, told the Associated Press in July that the company plans to release 7,800 tonnes of treated water for 17 days in the first round. (23-24高二上·湖南常德·期末)In late September, 2023, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission (任务) delivered bits of rock and dust collected from a distant asteroid (小行星) to Earth. The sample, from the asteroid named Bennu, is the first of its kind brought to the United States. Now, the public can see the asteroid’s rocky debris (碎片) on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History a few days ago.
Scientists think the 4.5-billion-year-old asteroid is composed of some of the solar system’s oldest materials, formed in dying stars before the planets existed. Examining this ancient matter could hold clues about how organic materials first arrived on Earth, so NASA launched the OSIRIS-REx mission in 2016 to collect samples from Bennu’s surface. The spacecraft arrived at the asteroid in 2018, surveyed the rock for an ideal collection site and ultimately took a sample back to Earth in 2020. Recently, an initial examination of the sample revealed evidence of a high carbon content and water on Bennu.
When the team was unpacking their sample, they found that “bonus” material from the asteroid covered the collector. The presence (存在) of this extra matter delayed NASA’s processing of the sample. “The very best ‘problem’ to have is that there is so much material that it’s taking longer than we expected to collect it,” said Christopher Snead, the OSIRIS-REx deputy sample curator. Next, more of the material from Bennu will go on display at the museum. In the next two years, scientists will continue analyzing the sample and will save at least 70 percent of the Bennu rocks for further research.
NASA administrator Bill Nelson believes that studying Bennu samples will advance our understanding of the solar system for generations. It promises to shed light on (弄明白) what makes our planet unique. By studying this 4.5-billion-year-old sample and sharing it with the public, NASA aims to inspire future scientists and encourage them to explore new fields.

(23-24高二上·北京石景山·期末)A relationship between the amount of adult speech children are exposed to and the concentration of myelin, a substance in the brain, has been found, researchers say. “I think the take-home message is, absolutely talking to your kids. It’s literally shaping the structure of the brain,” says the lead author, Prof John P. Spencer of the University of East Anglia.
The team find, for the 30-month-olds, larger amounts of adult speech are associated with higher quantities of myelin in language-related pathways in the brain; however, for the 6-month-olds, it goes the opposite way.
While the latter is unexpected, Spencer points out one possible factor: the brain’s stage of development.
“When babies are six months old, they experience massive growth of new nerve cells,” he says. “So the input comes in and may help extend the period of brain growth.” “While at 30 months, the brain starts to cutback some of the cell growth, and form specific connections. That’s where myelin comes in. So now the input starts to help structure the myelin,” he adds.
The researchers conclude adult speech is significant for both age groups and that the more adult speech children go through, the more sensitive they will be to language. The next step for them is to figure out whether the 6-month-old babies showing that negative connection will surely turn into 30-month-old kids who show positive relationship.
Dr. Saloni Krishnan, Reader in cognitive neuroscience (认知神经科学) at Royal Holloway, University of London, who is not involved in the work, however, notes individual differences in language ability are linked to genetics. “Children who are exposed to more language at home and have higher myelination will also have inherited genes(经遗传获得的基因) from parents who are more excellent in languages,” she said. “No final conclusion could be made before this potential genetic effect are tested. And yet there being currently no standard around the amount of input children should receive, caregivers should not necessarily feel pressure to talk more to their children.”
32.What surprises the team?
A.The finding for the 6-month-olds.
B.The finding for the 30-month-olds.
C.How the input help nerve cells grow.
D.How the input help structure the myelin.
33.What does the researchers think of adult speech?
A.It is positively related to myelin.
B.It cuts back some of the cell growth.
C.Its effect varies with the size of brains.
D.It is helpful for both groups’ language ability
34.What might Dr. Saloni Krishnan approve of?
A.The team should do more research.
B.Parents must talk more to their kids.
C.Inherited genes decide language ability.
D.The concentration of myelin makes no sense.

(23-24高二上·北京丰台·期末)A 12-year-old girl from Miller Middle School in San Jose has won the top prize with $25, 000 in a science fair. Her invention is a new fire detection system that can faster detect(探测) the heat sources. It’s also cheaper and more reliable than smoke detectors.
In the summer of 2022, a restaurant behind Shanya’s house was burned to the ground. Since then, Shanya’s mother became increasingly cautious about the stove in the kitchen. It wasn’t that the restaurant didn’t have smoke detectors, but they require there is a significant amount of smoke first, which can sometimes mean a fire has already started and gotten out of control. This incident inspired her to create a fire detection system to help people suffer less loss from fires.
One day, Shanya discovered that thermal cameras can detect heat loss in homes during winter months. She wondered if these cameras could also spot house fires more quickly than traditional smoke detectors.
Shanya connected an affordable thermal camera to a tiny computer. She programmed her system to differentiate between people—which were identified as warm moving objects—and heat sources, such as a turned-on gas burner, which were identified as hot objects that remained still.
The system can send a text message when it detects a fire but no human presence for a continuous 10-minute period. Shanya conducted multiple trials at various times of day and with people entering the camera’s view from different directions. In the end, Shanya’s system accurately detected human presence 98% of the time and heat sources 97% of the time.
Shanya determined that the best place for the detector would be on the wall above the stove but under the stove range—this allowed its sensors to have clear access to the most likely locations where a fire might start in a kitchen.
After her victory, the 12-year-old has said she wants to refine the device by combining it with a smartphone app. The app will allow users to quickly switch over to a camera after receiving a text message so they can see if the alert is correct.
35.Why did Shanya invent the new fire detection system?
A.To compete in the science fair. B.To relieve her anxiety about fire.
C.To help reduce people’s fire loss. D.To market it for mass production.
36.When the kitchen is on fire, Shanya’s fire detection system can ________.
A.find out heat sources B.give a fire alarm
C.record the burning process D.identify different people
37.To make the detection system more accurate, Shanya ________.
A.tested all kinds of sensors B.placed it on the ceiling
C.conducted some experiments D.combined it with an app
38.According to the passage, which can best describe Shanya?
A.Outgoing and smart. B.Helpful and generous.
C.Modest and determined. D.Creative and hardworking.

(23-24高二上·天津西青·期末)Dozens of dolphins swam out of the polluted waters of Haifa Harbor on Tuesday. This was the first time that dolphins had visited this crowded Mediterranean Port, and researchers were surprised by the unexpected event.
Between 40 and 50 of the dolphins appeared in the busy port on Tuesday morning, obviously drawn by the fish-rich waters of Haifa Bay.
However, the bay is also full of harmful chemicals. Avia d Sheinin, professor of Haifa University’s Maritime Studies Department, said he didn’t think the dolphins were harmed by the pollution, but that he hoped they would swim back to the sea soon. “It seems that they are quite relaxed. They don’t seem to be stressed,” he said.
Haifa Bay is lined by chemical companies that have been pouring poisonous waste into the water for decades. While pollution levels have dropped in recent years, the water is still considered a health hazard, whispering warnings to those who draw near.
“There are lots of fishes in Haifa Port. Unfortunately, we couldn’t tell the dolphins that the fish are not healthy, and I don’t know what the result will be,” he told Israel Army Radio.
Hundreds of Haifa residents gathered around Haifa Bay to see the interesting sight, and researchers said this provided a rare chance to film and study the rough-toothed dolphins. In addition to the dozens of dolphins which swam into the port on Tuesday, a similar number stayed outside the breakwater (防波堤). Later Tuesday the dolphins left the port but remained near the entrance and Israel’s coastguard was patrolling (巡逻) the area to try to make sure the dolphins didn’t re-enter the poisonous waters.
Relatively little is known about rough-toothed dolphins, which are usually found in deep and warm tropical waters.

(23-24高二上·上海浦东新·期末)Worth nearly $1trn, Facebook is the world’s sixth-most-valuable company. Its revenues have grown by 56% in the past year, and its share price by more than a quarter. Nearly 3bn people use its products every month. Why would such a glittering success change its name, as the Verge, a news site, reports it plans to within days?
The likely official reason for the rebranding is that the firm has outgrown the social network that Mark Zuckerberg started 17 years ago in a Harvard dorm. Today it includes other social apps (Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger) and video hardware (Oculus, Portal). It has launched a digital wallet (Novi) and may yet offer a currency (Diem). Mr. Zuckerberg expects people eventually to associate his firm more with the “metaverse”, a virtual space for work, play and more, than with social media.
If the Facebook network is to take a back seat, there may be a case for regrouping under a new name. Facebook wouldn’t be the first tech giant to do so. In 2015 Google set up Alphabet, a holding company for the search engine and its many side projects. Under this model, Facebook would become just another app within a wider family, though by far its biggest earner. There is another possible motive for a makeover. For all its financial success, the Facebook brand has become tarnished. The social network is blamed for fueling everything from teenage anorexia (厌食症) to uprising at the US Capitol.
This month Frances Haugen, a former employee, told Congress that Facebook was failing to moderate content on its platform and covering up a drop in young American users (it denies this). Public trust in it is lower than in most tech giants, and falling. Although two years ago the firm started branding its apps as being “from Facebook”, its new “smart glasses”, which can record video and take phone calls, feature only the logo of its partner, Ray-Ban.
Mr. Zuckerberg himself has been a reason for much of the criticism of Facebook, and of bossy tech firms more generally. As the all-powerful founder, he has a higher profile than his opposite numbers at TikTok, YouTube and other social networks. Normally, a brand facing a reputational crisis might dump its unpopular CEO. But Mr. Zuckerberg’s position is unassailable (难以撼动的), which may explain why he would want to dump the brand instead.
44.Facebook plans to change its name mainly because ________.
A.it wants people to associate its name with social media
B.it is trying to follow the fashion led by Google
C.it looks to expand its business to a wider range
D.its former name has brought bad reputation to the company

(23-24高二上·浙江宁波·期末)China’s leading liquor (烈性酒) producer, Kweichou Moutai (贵州茅台), and domestic coffee chain, Luckin Coffee, have launched a sauce-flavored latte (酱香拿铁) recently, as the Chinese luxury liquor maker aims to pull in more younger consumers. The 38-yuan sauce-flavored latte, which Luckin discounted to 19 yuan on the first day of sales, was one of the most popular topics on Chinese social media platform Weibo.
Moutai is a colorless spirit that is usually served at banquets (宴会) in China, and drinkers say that the flavor of Moutai latte is similar to soy sauce. The companies said the latte alcohol content was lower than 0.5 percent of its volume.
Kweichow Moutai has been looking for ways to be more accessible and appeal to a new generation of users. The company, based in China’s southwestern Guizhou province, also launched a baijiu-infused ice cream last year. With baijiu in it, the new ice cream became a hit.
Chinese social media users posted videos of themselves picking up cups of the drink and being told by sales staff that they should not drive after drinking it. By Monday afternoon in Beijing, the app showed buyers would need to wait for more than an hour to pick up their drinks.
Independent food industry analyst Zhu Danpeng said the cooperation would most likely benefit both brands. “Moutai and Luckin are the leading firms in the domestic liquor and coffee sectors, respectively,” Zhu said, “On the one hand, Moutai accelerates its brand rejuvenation (复兴) through cooperation with Luckin. (23-24高二上·河南南阳·期末)A special spelling event called “The Big Dictation” took place in the famous Champs-Elyseés street of Paris. The event was organized by a writer named Rachid Santaki, who is often called “Monsieur Dictee”, or “Mr. Dictation”. He came up with the idea of large groups of people participating in dictations (听写) back in 2013, thinking it could help people in France get better at reading and writing.
Over 50,000 people applied to join in the special spelling event. In the end, around 5,000 people, aged 10 to 90, were chosen to take part.
A large “blackboard” was set up for the event near a famous monument (纪念碑), the Arc de Triomphe. Three celebrities were there to play the part of the teacher, and read the dictation texts out loud. A total of 1,779 desks were set up in the street to be used in each of three different dictation sessions, each of which had a different theme, including classic French literature, contemporary French literature, and writing about sports.
Ten-year-old Samson thought the dictation was too quick and he couldn’t finish. Another young student agreed. “It was impossible!” he said. “The dictation was for adults.” Even adults found it hard, reporting that it caused “stress and worry”. One retired woman was pleased that she had only made two mistakes.
The organizer said the event wasn’t just about getting all the words right, but something that could bring people together. Another goal of The Big Dictation was to break the Guinness record for the largest dictation event ever. The previous record was set in 2018 at France’s national stadium, Stade de France, with 1,473 people taking part. It’s not clear if the event on the Champs-Elysees managed to beat the record. (23-24高二上·重庆·期末)A Japanese candy company has been making national news headlines for its idea to produce gummy candy that tastes like an “imaginary fruit” called Kiraspika.
Last year was a great one for gummy candy producers, and the market continued to expand throughout 2023, with fruit-flavored gummies being the most popular. While there are plenty of fruit flavors to choose from, companies arc still limited to the fruits available in our world. But what if someone broke down barriers and started making candy that tastes like imaginary fruits? That was the genius idea that Japanese sweats maker Kanro recently came up with. Two months ago, the company launched a new type of gummy candy that tastes like “Kiraspika”, a made-up fruit with an original flavor, design, and even an origin story.
According to the Kanro official website, the star-shaped Kiraspika only grows in the mountainous region of Blue Knife, where temperatures drop to -50 degrees Celsius in winter. It is very difficult to obtain, as when the fruit ripens, on a full-moon night around the winter solstice (冬至), the fruit explodes as a mechanism to spread its seeds. Pieces of the fruit fly at a speed of 300 meters per second, and a direct hit can be fatal.
Everything about Kiraspika was invented in Kanro’s fruit lab where its flavor experts combined various existing flavors to create an entirely original one that tastes like nothing you’ve ever eaten. To some, the Kiraspika flavor can be compared to that of an energy drink, others say it tastes a bit like a spicy apple, while some compare its sweetness to that of cherry gummies, combined with a tongue-numbing spiciness.
It is the mystery of the flavor and the personal interpretations that make Kanro’s product so popular. Having been launched in September in the 7-Eleven convenience store chain, Kiraspika gummies have been selling out like hotcakes, and the Japanese company is already working on new creations in its Fantasy Fruit Lab.
60.Why did Kanro put the Kiraspika-flavored gummy candy on the market?

A.The star-shaped Kiraspika grows in severe environment.
B.The new fruit flavor originates from an existing fruit.
C.It’s very challenging and dangerous to gather Kiraspika.
D.Kanro’s fruit lab made up everything about Kiraspika.
62.Which of the following best describes the flavor of the Kiraspika gummy?
A.Brand-new B.Various. C.Tasty. D.Ideal.

(23-24高二上·山东威海·期末)On January 14, 2006, Ben Keene received an email that changed his life. He had just taken a sip of hot tea when the message popped up, and Keene did a double-take at the subject line: “A TRIBE IS WANTED”.
From there, Ben co-founded Tribewanted, an eco-friendly sustainable community existing in the virtual world of the internet and on an actual desert island at the same time.
With huge media interest, the courageous and bold idea could have had enormous consequences for tourism. The idea behind Tribewanted was to recruit (招募) a group of similar people online before heading to the Fijian Island of Vorovoro to build a sustainable community alongside the local native tribe.
The idea was swept along with a flood of interest, with the island lease (租约) was secured, the virtual community sprung to life. All major decisions on the island were voted on by an online tribe that anyone around the world could join. The idea was so exciting that the journey was turned into a 5 part BBC series “Paradise or Bust” and a book, Tribewanted.

(23-24高二上·山东济宁·期末)False and misleading information supercharged with cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) that threatens to erode democracy and polarize (极化) society is the top immediate risk to the global economy, the World Economic Forum said in a report Wednesday.
The Global Risks Report was released ahead of the annual elite gathering of CEOs and world leaders in the Swiss ski resort town of Davos and is based on a survey of nearly 1,500 experts, industry leaders and policymakers.
The report listed misinformation and disinformation as the most severe risk over the next two years, highlighting how rapid advances in technology also are creating new problems or making existing ones worse. AI-powered misinformation and disinformation is developing as a risk just as billions of people in many countries, including large economies like the U.S., Britain, Indonesia, India, Mexico and Pakistan, are set to head to the opinion polls this year and next, the report said.
“You can use AI to do deepfakes and to really impact large groups, which really drives misinformation,” said Carolina Klint, a risk management leader at Marsh, whose parent company Marsh McLennan co-authored the report with Zurich Insurance Group. “Societies could become further polarized” as people find it harder to verify facts, she said. Fake information also could be used to fuel questions about the legitimacy of elected governments, “which means that democratic processes could be eroded, and it would also drive societal polarization even further,” Klint said.
The rise of AI brings a host of other risks, she said. It can empower “malicious actors” by making it easier to carry out cyberattacks, such as by automating phishing attempts or creating advanced bad software. With AI, “you don’t need to be the sharpest tool in the shed to be a malicious actor,” Klint said. It can even poison data that is scraped off the internet to train other AI systems, which is “incredibly difficult to reverse” and could result in further embedding biases into AI models, she said.
68.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The threat we are facing of artificial intelligence
B.Deepfakes that bring convenience to people’s lives
C.Social division originating from artificial intelligence
D.The key role of the artificial intelligence in astronomy

D.AI will cause a large number of Americans to lose their jobs.
70.What does Carolina Klint say about the impact of AI on democratic processes?
A.AI will enhance democratic processes greatly.
B.AI will have no impact on democratic processes.
C.AI could erode democratic processes and drive societal polarization further.
D.AI will improve the legitimacy of elected governments.
71.Which of the following statements is not implied in the text?

(23-24高二上·河北保定·期末)Now aged 42, Chris is from Werder in northeast Germany, a town deeply rooted in tradition.
He wanted to be a designer from an early age. In 2009, while studying at the famous Domus Academy in Milan, he befriended his classmate Zhang Lei. “So when I met Zhang Lei in Milan, we became friends very fast. He taught me a lot about his vision in design and also about his cultural background. This was a very interesting experience for me.”
Zhang Lei, a native of China's city of Tianjin, furthered his studies in Milan after graduating from Zhejiang University. United by their shared passion for art and design, Chris and Zhang formed a lasting friendship.
“Zhang Lei influenced me quite a lot because he taught me about his culture. Before, I was never in touch with Asian culture, so he kind of taught me a lot about Asian and especially Chinese culture. So for me, when I saw the umbrella, it was clearly a traditional Chinese artwork.” Chris experimented with the idea of reshaping structure and form to create a chair by drawing from the technique used to craft umbrella frames, perfected by the paper mache (混凝纸浆) technique. 2012 saw the first public appearance of “Piao”, a paper chair, at the well-known Milan Design Week. It combined extraordinary stability with fine design, securing the top prize at the Salone Satellite of Milan Furniture Fair. “Piao pretty much means floating and lightness, so we used the material paper for our chair, which is a very light and weightless material. Also, the edge of our product keeps it very open and light. So Piao reflects this idea very well.”
Piao received global attention because of its material innovation. Its paper is comprised of tough fibers. Using this paper, which was originally used for Yuhang oilpaper umbrella canopies (伞面), to create a strong chair was a bold experiment.

(23-24高二上·山西忻州·期末)For many runners, a marathon can often be a challenge—but sometimes what gets a runner through the tough 26.2 miles is looking out into the crowd and seeing his or her loved one holding up a sign and shouting words of encouragement. For one mom, though, her loved one was a bit more hands-on.
While running the REVEL Big Cottonwood Marathon in Salt Lake City, Courtney Rich, a self-taught baker and mother of two, was beginning to run out of energy just yards from the end when she was suddenly joined by her 10-year-old daughter, Avery.
The touching moment, caught on video and posted on social media, shows Avery running to her mother’s side to support her as she approached the end of the race. Rich’s face lit up when Avery joined her and helped her cross the finish line.
Rich later said in the video’s caption that being joined by her daughter to finish the race was “a moment I hope neither of us ever forget”. Rich said that her daughter could tell she was struggling after a phone call near the end of the race. “She knew I had struggled the last few miles,” Rich said. “She saw tears in my eyes when I called on mile 24.”
In the video, Rich’s facial expression changes from tiredness to a smile after seeing her daughter emerge from the crowd to join her. Then, Rich and her daughter ran hand-in-hand to the finish line. “Nothing could have prepared me for the moment my 10-year-old daughter would jump out of the crowd and run with me to the finish line,” she said. When the race was done, the two hugged each other at the finish line. The video ends with a final caption, “And then she just held me. She held me.”

1.What do we know about zombie ice?
A.It’s made up by nearby glaciers. B.It’s independent from large glaciers.
C.It will melt away from the ice cap. D.It has increased sea levels by 10 inches.

A.Why more zombie ice can’t be created. B.How zombie ice was formed in the past.
C.What the melting of zombie ice can lead to. D.How zombie ice functions in the ecosystem.
3.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 imply?
A.The ice has brought about starvation. B.The ice is refilled more than before.
C.The ice is becoming gradually thinner. D.The ice has been good to skate on.
4.What’s the main purpose of the article?
A.To explain a natural phenomenon. B.To comment on the “treasure hunt”.
C.To call for environmental protection D.To report on the melting zombie ice.
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.C 4.D
【导语】这是一篇新闻报道。文章主要报道了格陵兰岛冰原的一块僵尸冰即将从大冰原脱离并融化。
1.细节理解题。根据文章第一段中的“Zombie ice from a massive Greenland ice sheet was confirmed to be melting, which would eventually raise global sea levels by at least 10 inches (27 centimeters) on its own, reported Associated Press (AP).(据美联社报道,来自格陵兰岛巨大冰原的僵尸冰被证实正在融化,这最终将使全球海平面上升至少10英寸(27厘米))”以及第二段第一句话“Zombie ice is the kind of ice that is still attached to thicker areas of ice, but is no longer getting fed by larger glaciers.(僵尸冰是指仍然附着在较厚的冰层上,但不再从较大的冰川中获得营养的冰)”可知,僵尸冰是指仍然附在较厚的冰层上,但不再从较大的冰川中获得营养的冰。由此推知,僵尸冰一旦从较大的冰原中脱离,将会融化。故选C项。
2.主旨大意题。根据文章第三段内容“Scientists decided to look at the balance of the ice. In perfect equilibrium (平衡), snow in the mountains of Greenland flows down and thickens the sides of glaciers, balancing out what’s melting on the edges, according to AP. But in the last few decades, there is less refill and more melting, creating an imbalance.(科学家决定研究冰的平衡。 故选A项。
3.词句猜测题。根据第四段中划线短语上文“Study co-author William Colgan at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland told AP that 3.3 percent of Greenland’s total ice volume will melt eventually. (研究合著者、丹麦和格陵兰地质调查局的威廉·科尔根 (William Colgan) 告诉美联社,格陵兰岛总冰量的3.3%最终将融化)”可知,总冰量的 3.3% 最终将融化。由此推知,冰层正在逐渐变薄。划线短语“for what’s happening to the ice,(冰发生的事情)”指的是“僵尸冰融化会导致冰层正在逐渐变薄”。故选C。
4.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是文章第一段“Zombie ice from a massive Greenland ice sheet was confirmed to be molting, which would eventually raise global sea levels by at least 10 inches (27 centimeters) on its own, reported Associated Press (AP).(据美联社报道,来自格陵兰岛冰原的僵尸冰被证实正在蜕皮,这最终将使全球海平面上升至少10英寸(27厘米))”可知,文章主要报道了格陵兰岛冰原的一块僵尸冰即将从大冰原脱离并融化。由此推知,作者写本文的目的是为了报道僵尸冰的融化。故选D项。

28.What is the mission of OSIRIS-REx?
A.To search for alien life on Bennu.
B.To collect a sample from an asteroid.
C.To explore the origin of the solar system.
D.To study the impact of space debris on Earth.
29.What can we know from paragraph 2?
A.There is carbon and water on Bennu.
B.Bennu is the oldest star in the solar system.
C.Bennu played a key role in the evolution of life on Earth.
D.It took two years for scientists to locate an ideal collection site.

【答案】32.A 33.D 34.A

45.What can we learn about Facebook from the passage?
A.It was founded by Zuckerberg in his college dormitory.
B.It has a favorable influence on teenagers’ mind and behavior.
C.It is as popular among youngsters in the US as it used to be.
D.It produced smart glasses with its logo on it.
46.What does the underlined word “tarnished” mean in the passage?
A.abandoned B.discriminated C.globalized D.compromised

C.It’s very challenging and dangerous to gather Kiraspika.

62.Which of the following best describes the flavor of the Kiraspika gummy?

Ben spent 10 years building and expanding Tribewanted beyond the crowdfunded sustainable-tourism villages on an island in Fiji, to a beach in Sierra Leone and a farm in Umbria. He faced challenges including a fire sweeping through the island in the first week of the project, a military coup (政变), and a hurricane that threatened to destroy the emerging village. Online disagreements also made decision making hard and pushed the project to the edge.
The project survived, and for a while, thrived. From there Ben joined Escape the City, a global community with the mission to help one million people to do work that matters to them and the world, inspiring thousands of talented career changers and ambitious businessmen to take the leap and launch their ideas into the world.
69.What will happen in U.S. this year and next according to the passage?
A. Donald Trump will become the President of the United States.
B.The United States will hold a public opinion poll.
C. The United States is about to erupt into a war.

In the past, the REVEL Big Cottonwood Marathon has had other memorable moments of mothers caring for their children, but perhaps not as hands-on as this one.
