It all started at tea-time. Mrs. Bendall, Dicky’s mother, and Mrs. Spears, who was spending the afternoon with her, were quietly sitting and sewing (做针线活)in the drawing room. The children were eating their bread and butter nicely and quietly, and the servant girl had just poured out the milk and water, when Dicky suddenly took the bread plate, put it upside down on his head, and held the bread knife tightly.
“Look at me!” he shouted.
His shocked sisters looked, and before the servant girl could get there, the bread plate shook, slid to the floor and broke into small pieces. At this awful point the little girls lifted up their voices and shouted their loudest.
“Mother, come and look what he’s done!”
“Dicky’s broken a great plate!”
“Come and stop him, mother!”
Can you imagine how mother came running? But she was too late. Dicky had jumped out of his chair, run through the window on to the veranda(走廊), and, well—there she stood—helpless. What could she do? She couldn’t chase after the child. She couldn’t hunt for Dicky through the apple trees. That would be undignified (不 体面的).
“Very well, Dicky, ” she cried, “I shall have to think of some way of punishing you.”
Seeing this, Mrs. Spears said, “Oh, my dear. I’m sure you make a great mistake in trying to bring up children without beating them. Nothing really takes its place.” “Believe me. There is nothing like handing the naughty kid to his father,” she added.
Mrs. Bendall, deep inside, was terribly shocked to hear the advice. But Mrs. Spears seemed to take it as a normal thing, so she did it too.
The children had gone to bed before Dicky’s father Edward came back. Mrs. Bendall rushed to him, “You have to beat Dicky.”
“But why on earth should I start beating him?” responded Edward. “We’ve never done it before.”

There lived two brothers, John McNeil and James, in a village in Kentucky in the north of America, who had lost their parents in a terrible earthquake ten years before. Worse still, ten-year-old John McNeil suffered from serious autism. He often stayed at a corner without saying anything with others and frequently ran everywhere, so his brother James was concerned about his safety.
On a windy, cold day, John McNeil forgot to put on his shoes and ran out the door. He headed straight for the 125-foot electrical tower behind the McNeiI home and didn’t realize the dangers of the structure. That day his thoughts were set on climbing to the top of that tower, touching the sky. Maybe he thought he could meet his parents in the sky. What a poor boy!
His seventeen-year-old brother, James, was always close by. James always made sure that no danger came to his little brother. But today was different. Today, John ran out the door unnoticed. He was making his way to the sky step by step by the time James saw him. John, like most autistic children, had no idea about fear or danger. James, on the other hand, realized that he had to face his greatest fear of all — the fear of heights.
However, James understood the danger of the electrical tower but chose to follow his younger brother secretly, trying not to look down, all the way to the top. He finally reached his brother and held him with his right hand. With his left hand, he held a metal bar to help stabilize them both. What a thrilling scene!

It was almost nine o’clock and Sydney returned to Tellson’s Bank to see Mr. Lorry. Monsieur Manette, however, hadn’t returned from his visits. Mr. Lorry was worried. When he did return, his face told them that he had failed to find someone to save Charles. “Where are my bench and my work tools?” he asked. “I must finish those shoes!”
Their heart sank. “The last hope is gone!” said Mr. Lorry shaking his head sadly. “Yes, the last hope is gone,” said Sydney. Then he took a piece of paper from his pocket. It was his Leave Pass, with “Sydney Carton” on it. He gave it to Mr. Lorry, and asked him to keep it for him until the next day because he didn’t want to take it into the prison when visiting Charles. Then he looked in Monsieur Manette’s pockets and found his Leave Pass with his name and the names of Lucie and little Lucie on it.
“Look after these, too,” he said. “They are in great danger. Madame Defarge is going to have them all arrested, probably the day after tomorrow. You must have your horses and carriage ready at two o’clock tomorrow afternoon. Lucie and her father must be sitting in the carriage, and so must you. As soon as I arrive, take me into the carriage and drive off. This is very, very important. We must save them!”
On the next day afternoon, Charles Darnay sat alone in his cell, writing a long letter to Lucie and others to her father and Mr. Lorry. Then he lay down to sleep. He woke early, so he got up and walked up and down in his cell. The guard had told him that he would die at three o’clock. Just after the clock had struck one o’clock, Charles heard footsteps approaching. Then the key turned in the lock, and the door opened. He heard the guard Barsad say, “Go in quickly, and do what you have to do. I will wait here.” The person who entered the room with some hidden chemicals was Sydney Carton, who smiled and put a finger on his lips. Was this really happening?

One day in 1964, my mother came home from work and announced that she had found a pet for the family. My sister asked what it was. My mother said it was a poodle dog named Pepe.
I couldn’t believe my sister wanted a poodle dog — especially one with such a strange name. But she had made up her mind.
Pepe arrived the next night, his short tail bobbing (摆动) happily. I remained distant, thinking poodles should have stayed in France. My sister played with him until bedtime, and he begged for more attention. I ignored him.
He was a skilled digger, so our backyard fence wouldn’t hold him. We tied him; he pulled out of his collar (颈圈). We drove stakes (木桩) into the ground; he dug them up. We put a harness on him, staked the ground and tied him to the laundry pole; he was still waiting for me at the front door at the end of the day, smiling happily.
Every day, he asked me with his eyes to play with him or take him somewhere. At night, he would wait until I fell asleep, leave his bed by the wall heater and jump onto the end of my bed.
One night, I was in a half dream state. Suddenly, my throat and my eyes hurt, and some animal was whining (哀鸣) in my ear. I opened my eyes and saw fog in my room. I wondered who left the window open. Pepe whined and nibbled (咬) on my blouse. Then I woke up and realized that it wasn’t fog in my room — it was smoke.
I couldn’t breathe standing up, so I got down on the floor and crawled (爬行) beneath the smoke. Pepe followed my every move, his curly-haired stomach struggling on the ground. If I hadn’t been so scared, I would have laughed.

Armed with two over-packed suitcases,we arrived at the airport just in time for my flight. “Well, here we are, the airport,” my sister said with a sigh. As I watched her unload my luggage, I could see the sadness in her eyes. This was not easy on her either. We had both been dreading (害怕) this moment for the past week. One last hug and a final good-bye and I would be on my way to a new life abroad, leaving my beloved sister behind.
All my life I had loved airports. To me they were some kind of magic gateway to the world,a place from which to start great holidays and adventures. But today it seemed like a cold and heartless place. I looked at my sister and even though her eyes were filled with tears, she was trying to keep a brave face. “You’d better go or you’ll miss your flight,” she said.
“I’ll miss you,” I replied, and with those last words I was off. As promised, I did not look back, but by the time I reached the customs office I was sobbing (啜泣). “Cheer up, love,” the tall customs officer said with a smile. “It’s not the end of the world, you know.” But to me it was the end of the world, as I had known it.
While boarding the plane I was still crying. I did not have the energy to put my bag in the overhead locker, so I stuffed it on the empty seat next to mine. As I settled into my chair, a feeling of sadness overwhelmed me. I felt like my best friend had just been taken away from me.
Growing up, my sister and I would do everything together. Born barely fifteen months apart we not only looked alike, we were alike. Whenever one of us need something, the other one would come along. When the time came for us to go to college, we also went together. But now that our college days were over and I was off to a foreign country, all I had left were my memories.

My sister-in-law Carol said she’d already picked out a kitten for me. I agreed to go with her… just to look. I made no promise to take one home. After all, only two months had passed since I lost my beloved calico cat, Mandi. Maybe I needed to be pet-free for a while.
When we got there, three of the four kittens remained in the litter. Carol picked up one and handed it to me. The beautiful face and white fur on the right side of her nose reminded me of a clown-like mask. How could I resist? Then another kitten, with an evenly balanced white face, jumped into my lap and purred.
Driving home in my British sports car proved difficult with two mischievous kittens. One clung to my left arm and shoulder, watching the fast-moving scenery outside. The other paced back and forth from my lap to the passenger’s seat, making it hard for me to shift gears. Both mewed in a loud duet(二重奏) of protest. Of course, I hadn’t brought a cage. I had not planned to take home a kitten — or two.
The clown-like-masked female earned the name Squeakette with her tiny voice squeaking about each new discovery as she explored her new home. The male, lacking only a black tie in his formal clothes, took the name Sebastian for my favorite composer, Johann Sebastian Bach.
A few weeks later, a neighbor helped me carry down my six-foot artificial Christmas tree from the attic(阁楼). I thanked him with a batch of cookies, and then set up the tree in the comer of my living room.
Sebastian and Squeakette knocked it down before I opened the box of decorations. After setting it upright, I straightened the few bent wire branches back into place. As I checked for any other damage, a quick flash of black-and-white fur passed by me. Up they went, branch by branch. The tree danced around as the two kittens took turns climbing it together. Sebastian made it to the top a moment ahead of Squeakette.

I chewed on my pencil as I walked back and forth across my bedroom. What was I going to do? It was bad enough that I was the new kid. But now I was sure to get laughed right out of fifth grade. How could my first homework be such a disaster?
“My name is Anna, and this summer I——”I stopped. How could I stand in front of my class and say that I’d spent the entire summer handling something that most people don’t even like to talk about? Poop (粪便). I’d spent three months shoveling (铲), collecting, and analyzing co w poop on my grandparents’ farm. I tried to think of a different adventure I could share. Maybe I could say I’d spent the summer on the Weather Control Team preventing floods.
“Time for dinner,” my mom called.
I walked slowly down the stairs and slid into my chair.
“You’ve been in your room since you came home from school,” Mom said. “What are you working on?”
I sighed. “I have to tell the class what I did this summer.”
My younger brother, Seymour, began to laugh uncontrollably. “No one will want to sit next to you after they hear you were covered in cow poop all summer!”
“OK, that’s enough, Seymour,” Dad said.
“Anna,” said Mom, putting green beans in a bowl, “be proud of the work we did this summer. Our planet would be in sad shape without scientists like your grandfather.”
It’s true that my grandfather does important work. He developed an easy way to use poop as a source of fuel. Using the poop is now easy, economical, and environmentally safe.
“I know, Mom,” I said, staring at my meatloaf. “But it’s not exactly something people want to hear about before lunch.”
That night I dreamed about more splendid adventures: cave diving in Mexico; hiking through the Amazon rainforest.
At school the next day, I bent over my desk, listening to each kid speak. My palms were sweaty, and the knot (结) in my stomach grew tighter.
“And that was my journey to Mount Everest,” Ember Adams said, finishing her report. She bowed and took her seat.

In the heart of Daventry, five-year-old Oliver always cherishes tender moments with his mother, Codi Pow, who was a dedicated student nurse in the hospital in the town.
Codi has suffered from high blood pressure since a young age, and grapples with persistent health issues, which could easily trigger potential stroke or heart problems. She still remembers in the winter when her son was three years old, she got an unexpected tooth infection, which worsened dramatically, leaving her in hospital for a week. That tooth infection almost brought an end to her life.
As a student nurse, Codi navigates her daily routine with enormous care. She knows clearly that she should attend to herself well, taking pills on time, curbing her emotions, reducing the -sodium input, and so on. Her doctor’s repeated warnings echo in her mind, emphasizing the need to avoid infection that could lead to severe complications(并发症).
Oliver lives a life no different from other kids in the neighborhood, filled with playful activities, joyous singing, and the routine trips to kindergarten. What sets him apart is that he stands out for his unique passion: health and safety. During playtime, he eagerly absorbs himself in a toy first aid kit and asks his mum about medical things. Oliver has collected a surprising amount of knowledge on health and safety, despite being just five.
One quiet Sunday morning, while preparing breakfast for Oliver, Codi felt it a bit difficult to breathe. She went to the hospital with chest pain, swelling to her neck and a lump in the same area. She had a blood test, chest X-Ray and ECG before being sent home and advised to see her doctor later after she got the test reports.
By 1: 30 in the afternoon, Codi was doing washing in the kitchen while chatting with Oliver when her condition drastically worsened. She felt a high fever, the sign of a possible infection. When I was a boy, I always wore turtleneck shirts because I was so sensitive and shy. I worked hard to earn exceptional marks and always tried to behave well. I was younger than everyone else because my good marks had allowed me to skip second grade, but this added nothing to my already low self-confidence.
When I was 14, my parents divorced (离婚). I moved in with my dad in a new neighborhood, but he was always so busy and had little time for me. It seemed the only time he ever spoke to me was to be demanding or critical. I began to hate coming home from school every day. I sank further into my low self-esteem (自尊心) and was overwhelmed with feeling unappreciated and alone.
One day, my aunt called. This seemed like a miracle (奇迹) to me. Aunt Ginette usually only called once a year, on my birthday. She said she had just seen some young teenagers participate in a public speaking contest, and she thought I should try it, too. She told me she firmly believed I could perform on stage like the other kids since she had seen me do skits (幽默小品) for the family at Christmas.
I was a little surprised. Me? Onstage? In a public speaking contest? I was hesitant. But Aunt Ginette was so confident and seemed really serious. Feeling her strong belief, I went against all odds and agreed to enter the contest.
All that winter, twice a week after dinner, I took three different buses for the three-hour round-trip to practice in Ville d’Anjou, where the competition would take place. Although my dad really did love me and wanted the best for me, he disapproved of this new dream, fearing it would take away from my homework time and impact my academic performance. But I remained a top performer in school and never missed a day.

I stood in front of the house, waiting for Grandma’s box of cookies. Every Saturday, a box of cookies would arrive on our doorstep tied with a brown string. As far as I could remember, Grandma, carrying the box, was always there on time.
Jack, my younger brother, had always been fonder of the cookies. He was still childish, maybe not understanding the value of time with family. As for me, I was always Grandma’s little girl, and possibly she loved me more than Mom. There was something about Grandma that made her so special. In fact, seeing her every Saturday was the happiest thing all week for me.
Jack played in the yard and picked flowers for the dinner table. Mom always wanted the prettiest ones, and Jack just knew which ones she would love most.
“The weather report says today will be a rainy day. So will Grandma still come?” Jack asked.
“I’m not sure,” I answered, looking up at the sky. The clouds were dark gray and thick, which just made me more upset. However, Jack didn’t seem too excited about the cookies this time. He was arranging his flowers attentively.
“You’d better come in! I can feel a few raindrops on my head,” Mom shouted. Jack quickly ran towards her, carrying many flowers. Some even slipped out of his hands, creating a colorful trail behind him.
“I brought you some roses, Mom!” Jack said, shoving (猛推) the flowers into her hands. I found he left some flowers in his hand. Who was he going to give them to? Mom then looked back at me. “Would you rather be outside in the rain?” she questioned. I shook my head. “It’s just a box of cookies. I can get it next Saturday,” I thought. However, I knew it was more about the cookies — it was a lot of love from Grandma.
Mom gave me a small smile and repeated, “I knew you wouldn’t want to get wet. Come in, baby.” I was about to step inside when a familiar voice came, “Jenny, I’m coming!” I turned back and saw Grandma shuffling (拖着脚走) towards me.

A Different Christmas
It was almost Christmas, but Diego wasn’t feeling very excited. This was the firstChristmas since his parents got divorced. And nothing felt the same. He and his brother,Samuel, wouldn’t even get to see Mom this Christmas.
“Everything’s different,”Diego said to Dad.
“I know.”Dad’s eyes were sad.“Sometimes things change before they get better.”He was quiet for a bit, then smiled.“Christmas will be different this year, but that doesn’t mean we won’t have some good times. We’ll still be celebrating the birth of the Savior.”
Diego nodded. It would be hard not seeing Mom, but maybe Christmas could still be good, just as Dad said. Diego wanted to help make this Christmas a happy one.
He went to his room to think. Sometimes for Christmas they did a family service project. What could they do this year?
Diego looked around his room. He saw a toy car he didn’t play with anymore. He picked it up and spun(使快速旋转) the wheels. It was still really good. Maybe he and Dad and Samuel could give some toys to kids who didn’t have any! He found a few other toys and put them in a bag with the car.
When Diego finished, he took the bag to Samuel’s room.“Can I help you clean your room?” he asked. “It’s a surprise for Dad.”
Samuel looked up from the picture he was drawing. “Sure.”
The boys worked together to clean Samuel’s room. Diego told him about the plan. They found a few toys that Samuel didn’t play with and added them to the bag.
When they were done, they carried the bag downstairs.“Dad,”Diego said,“we found some toys we don’t play with anymore. Can we give them to kids who don’t have any toys?”
Dad looked surprised and happy.“That’s a great idea! Let’s take them to the homeless shelter this afternoon.”
Visiting the shelter was fun. Diego and Samuel got to play with some of the kids whileDad talked to the grown-ups.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes... but I don’t have money on me...” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears, “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compares to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you up since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat here, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

Rani jumped off the school bus. Splash! She landed right in the muddy rainwater. It had been a Friday full of disasters. Angry thoughts boiled inside Rani’s head as she marched home in the rain. Why did she have to forget her raincoat back home? Why did she have to risk taking the school bus back home? Why did her hair have to wave up like a giant cotton candy balloon just when she wanted it to behave? Why, why, why, fumed (烦恼) Rani as she turned the backdoor key.
“Rani, is that you?” Mama called from the family room.
Suddenly Rani’s cousins, Amit and Sumit, came charging toward her.
“How many eggs does Rani have in that nest on her head?” laughed Amit.
“Let me get them off Rani’s head!” shouted Sumit.
This was really too much. Rani was upset. She fled out of the door, down the driveway, and back up the road she’d walked down minutes before. Angry as Ran I was, she knew that she should calm down. Without noticing, she walked behind a green curtain of lush (茂盛的) bamboo. Tearing through the wild growth, she made her way down a narrow mud path into a clearing. She threw her schoolbag on the ground and breathed hard.
Lying on her schoolbag, she bitterly remembered the hours, days, and weeks she had spent trying to soften her hair from using her grandmother’s special mixture of coconut to washing it with Sunsilk shampoo—but in vain.
Before long, the tiring day caught up with Rani, and she fell into sleep.
“Rani! Raa—aani!”
Rani woke up to Mama’s calls. She lifted her head from her knees. She wandered absently around the bamboo overlooking her house. Rani hugged herself, making no response. “I still need time to calm down,” she told herself, “Amit and Sumit shouldn’t have made fun of me.”
Alone in her secret hideout, Rani watched the shadows get longer and begin to disappear as dusk fell. Suddenly the leaves rustled (沙沙作响).

(23-24高二上·山东青岛·期末)阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Susan wasn’t doing well enough at school before, or at least she wasn’t confident about herself. She wished she could do better here in her new school.
“Who would like to present your understanding of the poem?” Mr. Lee, the literature teacher, looked around the classroom. Susan lowered her head to avoid the teacher’s eyes. She was afraid to be laughed at if she made a mistake.
“Kara?” the teacher asked instead. Oh, perfect, Susan raised her head a bit. Of course Kara got the answer right again. Everyone clapped their hands, and Susan gave a quick look at Kara with admiration. Kara noticed her and gave back her a smile. Susan felt warm.
Soon, sadness filled Susan’s heart again. She hadn’t made any friends of her own so far. She felt so lonely that she really hoped someone like Kara would come up and call her a friend. Also, how she wished she were Kara, who was the most popular girl in school-always surrounded by several boyfriends, best friends and others. Kara was like shining sunshine.
Then, still in the class, some old memories crossed Susan’s mind. Growing up on a farm near a big forest, Susan lived every day to the fullest on the farm with Grandpa, fishing in the river, setting a camp fire, climbing the tallest trees and making friends with the lovely creatures in the forest. Grandpa would hug her and call her “my sunshine”. The old man was always proud of his little girl and Susan was sure she was the queen of the forest. She smiled at all her thoughts.
Literature class finally ended, and all the students headed for the gym. The class had been playing basketball. Kara, of course, was the best player. Beside her, Susan felt like very small and awkward. Today, however, the gym teacher led the students to a big tree in the yard and said, “Everyone! You’re going to climb this tree today. Just try your best.” Hearing the teacher’s words, Susan lit up.
Many of the classmates tried but failed, including Kara. Then came her turn.

Link struck a match and pushed the pile of grass to one side with his foot. By the light of the match, he discovered a dog curled up (蜷缩) in a heap, with one foreleg stuck awkwardly out in front of him at an impossible angle. Although the dog was in great pain, he still gazed at the man who bent above him softly, with a mixture of pride and need for help in his brown eyes.
Moved by such an expression, Link knelt down to examine his hurts. He recognized the dog as a collie (柯利牧羊犬). The collie reminded him that several years before, he had ever witnessed one Airedale thrown from a car and killed by a close-following vehicle. Judging by the mud on the dog’s snowy chest and the oily marks on his back, he guessed this collie might have suffered a similar fate (命运), landing so heavily that it broke his front leg and ended up in the ditch covered in mud and oil.
Link couldn’t imagine how long the dog had been lying there in pain. Seeing the serious hurts and hearing his howl (嚎叫) of pain, Link was at a loss, not knowing how to help him out successfully. He had planned to leave him behind but a voice inside him encouraged him to step forward bravely. Then Link suddenly realized that maybe the kindest thing to do for the dog was put him out of his suffering. He gently approached the badly hurt animal, whispering softly, “Sorry, honey! Forgive me please!” Picking up a stone off the ground with a heavy heart, Link turned back to where the dog lay, thinking to himself, “How terrible! Do I have the right to end his life?” His heart beat wildly as he cast scared glances on the dog. However, at the thought of his closed eyes and howls, he finally made the toughest decision. Watching the poor dog closely, he balanced the rock and prepared to deliver the deadly blow.

Every Saturday, Bibi hung out at her grandma’s laundry and dry-cleaning store while her mom worked. Bibi loved being with her grandma, but she wanted to do more than just draw and read. “How about I write down what people bring in and pin a number to it?” Bibi offered. With Grandma nearby, she did fine. But the next order was an enormous bedspread. Bibi checked it in, but when she went to lift it off the counter, it wouldn’t move. She tried moving it, but it toppled over on her. “I’m OK!” She giggled from under the soft material. Grandma lifted the bedspread off her and smiled. “Why don’t you draw for a little while,” she suggested. “You’re such a good artist”. Bibi sighed. “But I wanted to help you.” Grandma didn’t want her to handle the hot presser or the iron. She could put the stiff cardboard into the ready washed shirts, but that was about it. “Why don’t you draw a picture of more customers coming in?” Grandma joked. “Maybe that would help!”
Bibi went outside. It was a clear fall day. The last leaves were starting their lazy drift to the ground. She spotted her babysitter, Stephanie. Stephanie was painting big letters on the window of the hardware store. “Stephanie!” Bibi called. “You’re going to get in trouble.” Stephanie laughed. “The high-school cheerleading (啦啦队) is painting windows for our football game next weekend. Some of the shop owners said we could.”
“Does that paint wash off?” Bibi asked. “Yep. It’s just cornstarch (玉米淀粉), soap, and food coloring,” said Stephanie. Bibi saw other kids from the high school painting designs on windows up and down the street. GO, TIGERS said the window of the nail salon in huge letters. HEAR US ROAR! said the window of the milkshake shop. “I can help you!” Bibi called to Stephanie, her heart beating fast. “I can draw!” “Sorry, Bibi,” Stephanie said. “I’m out of paint, and I have to get home. Thank you, though!” Bibi was so disappointed. She stared at Grandma’s windows. They were bare.

(23-24高二上·江苏连云港·期末)阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Instead of beating him, Edward decided to talk openly with Dicky.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】After he heard the reason, a burst of anger went through him. Edward couldn’t believe that Dicky had been so uncontrollable. He had always believed in gentle and understanding parenting. Edward sat down with Dicky and asked him to explain his actions. Dicky, feeling regretful, admitted that he had acted foolishly. He explained that he had done it to get attention, as he often felt left out when his mother was busy with guests or his sisters. Edward realized Dicky’s need for more attention and guidance.
Instead of beating him, Edward decided to talk openly with Dicky. He explained how his actions affected the family. He also promised to spend more quality time with him and make him feel valued. This incident became a turning point in their relationship. Dicky learned the importance of expressing his feelings and needs in a more appropriate way while Edward understood the significance of being a patient and attentive father. They both grew closer through communication, proving that violence was not necessary to teach important life lessons.

【答案】James was shaking. The fear of heights gripped him as he stood on the top of the 125-foot electrical tower. James, overcoming his own fears, knew he had to keep his composure for John’s sake. The wind howled around them, but James remained resolute, holding onto both his brother and a metal bar with a firm grip. James felt a mix of emotions — fear, love, and an overwhelming sense of responsibility. He was determined to protect his little brother and began to lead John to descend.
Hundreds of people came together at the base of the tower. A collective gasp escaped the crowd as they witnessed the two brothers making their descent. Strangers joined hands, forming a protective circle around the tower, ready to catch the brothers if they fell. The unity and compassion of the onlookers were obvious. Finally, James and John reached the ground safely, greeted by the applause and cheers of the crowd. James, still trembling from the height he had faced, embraced John tightly.

【答案】“Of all the people in the world that I might have expected to see here, you are the last,” whispered Charles. “Yet, here I am,” replied Sydney. “I have come to help you. Do not be afraid.” Charles stared in disbelief, his mind reeling from this unexpected turn of events. Sydney, seeing his confusion, quickly explained his plan to switch places with Charles and save him from the guillotine.
Now Charles, looking really like the usual Sydney, heard him say, “Quickly! Take this pen and paper, and write down what I tell you.” With trembling hands, Charles scribbled down the instructions as Sydney dictated them. He was to pretend to be Sydney. Sydney would take his place in the cell, and with any luck, the plan would work. As the clock ticked closer to three o’clock, the tension in the air was almost unbearable. But Sydney’s calm demeanor gave Charles a sliver of hope. And with that, the fateful hour arrived, and the switch was made.

【答案】We finally reached the kitchen, where the smoke was thick. Panic surged through me as I realized there was a fire. In the chaos, Pepe, normally so lively, stood by my side, his eyes reflecting a mix of concern and loyalty. It was then that I understood the true bond that had formed between us. Ignoring my earlier hesitations, I knew I had to act swiftly. The fire was spreading, and the situation demanded quick thinking.
I turned off the burner (炉子) and crawled to open the back door. Pepe, sensing the urgency, nudged my hand as if encouraging me to move faster. The smoke was suffocating, but Pepe's presence gave me the strength to persevere. Together, we stumbled out into the fresh air, gasping for breath. As the firefighters arrived to tackle the blaze, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for Pepe. He had not only softened my initial resistance but also proved to be an unexpected hero. From that day forward, our connection deepened, and I learned that sometimes, true companionship comes in unexpected forms.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Suddenly the plane shook heavily and the bag next to me fell on the floor. Startled, I quickly reached down to pick it up, and as I did, a small notebook fell out from the bag. I opened it and immediately recognized my sister’s handwriting. It was a diary she had secretly slipped into my bag before I left. Flipping through the pages, I found heartfelt messages, memories of our childhood, and words of encouragement for my new journey. Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized the depth of her love and support, even in my absence.
Paragraph 2:
I spent the rest of the flight reading about my sister’s diary. Her words on the page brought a bittersweet mix of emotions, reminding me of the bond we shared and the strength she always gave me. As I read through the diary, I felt a sense of warmth and comfort, as if she were right there beside me. It was a precious gift that I would cherish throughout my time abroad, a reminder of the unbreakable connection between us despite the physical distance.

【答案】
He lunged at me from the top, paws stretched out like wings. Seeing what he was doing, I reached out my hands quickly, uttering, “Sebastian, come here”. Just then, he jumped into my arms. I felt a big, warm kitty sniffing my hand, the familiar purrs vibrating through my fingertips. Seeing her brother’s bold move, Squeakette jumped after him. I put them in my lap. They rubbed their soft heads against my palm, seeking more affection. With each stroke, their body were at ease in my presence. After a while, the two kittens took turns climbing it together again.
Sensing their interest, I found a smaller Christmas tree for them. This Christmas tree was too tall for them, who were still young kittens. I was afraid that they could hurt themselves if they jumped from high places. Later, this smaller Christmas tree became their favorite toy and they jumped up and down many times a day. Seeing them play happily, I heard a voice in my heart echoing “it is right to take them home.” They are my little miracle which shows me that love knows no boundaries.

【答案】
“It’s your turn, Anna,” Ms. Hammond said. Taking a deep breath, I stepped to the front of the room and cleared my throat. “This summer I-well, I...” I stared at the floor. This was my last chance to save my dignity with a tale of fake adventure. Then I thought about how hard Grandpa worked to save our planet. Gathering my courage, I described the process of collecting and analyzing cow poop and how it was transformed into sustainable fuel. Surprisingly, my classmates listened attentively. As I concluded my sustainable adventure, I gracefully bowed to them.
The class cheered as I returned to my desk, and some of my classmates approached me with admiration in their eyes. Ember Adams, who had just shared her journey to Mount Everest, clapped me on the back. “That’s so cool, Anna! Turning poop into fuel? That never crossed my mind!” she exclaimed. Soon, others joined the conversation, intrigued by the unusual nature of my summer experience. A sense of relief, joy and pride overwhelmed me. Instead of being the target of laughter, I became the center of attention. My seemingly “stinky” summer vacation was actually not only a fabulous planet-saving adventure but also opened a door to my friendships with my new fifth-grade peers!

All of a sudden, she had a blackout, and her legs gave out. She fell onto the kitchen floor like a sack of sand.

Codi was swiftly attended to by the medical professionals. They addressed the infection in her blood. Oliver’s quick response paved the way for her prompt medical intervention, ensuring that she received the timely care needed to alleviate her condition.

【答案】Four months later, the big night arrived. Waiting anxiously alongside the other competitors, I couldn’t keep from trembling. Taking a deep breath, I tried my best to control my emotions, murmuring to myself, “You can do it!” Finally, it was my turn. I adjusted my clothes, confidently rose to my feet and strode (大步走) onto the stage. I stood there and firmly began my speech, which I had practiced hundreds of times. Words smoothly flew out of my mouth like a beautiful melody, and it was then that I spotted my father in the audience.
When I saw my father’s face, his eyes were shining-he was so proud. Somehow, I gained energy from his expression and finished the speech smoothly. Sitting by my dad, I waited for the result and the previous tightness was replaced by a sense of relief. Dad gently patted my shoulder, saying, “Well done,” and gave me a big hug. “I now realize how wrong I was to criticize you all the time. I should have appreciated you more.” Hearing this, tears welled up in my eyes, blurring the surroundings. It turned out I got the first prize and we cheered happily. Since then, I have looked at the world with brand-new confidence, heading toward my bright future.

I rushed towards Grandma with open arms. I hugged her tightly, nearly knocking her off balance. She threw me a faint smile and held me close to her heart. I could feel her warm breath on my shoulder. The sight of her holding the box of cookies tied with a brown string brought joy to my heart. “I couldn’t let a little rain stop me from seeing my favorite girl and boy,” Grandma chuckled. She handed me the box of cookies. I held it delicately, and I thought it was the most precious in the world.
“Grandma, you brought the cookies again!” Jack said happily. He didn’t hug Grandma but asked her to close her eyes. I guessed he was playing a joke on Grandma. However, I was wrong. Surprisingly, he took out a beautiful bouquet of roses from behind his back. “Thank you, Grandma. The flowers are for you, my loving grandma.” I could see that Grandma was almost moved to tears. He held Grandma’s hand and guided her in front of the fireplace. I opened the box, and we enjoyed the delicious cookies together, talking and laughing.

【答案】On the way home, Dad asked what else they could do to make this Christmas special. “Last Christmas we made treats for our neighbors,” Diego said." We could do that,” said Dad. “Let’s go to buy stuff to make cookies.” Samuel thought cookies were a great idea. The boys helped Dad shop for the ingredients at the store. At home they made the dough and cut out star and tree shapes. Then they took little bags of cookies to their neighbors.
At the end of the day, Diego was tired but happy. Diego and his dad decorated their home with lights, bringing a festive spirit. They invited friends over for a Christmas party, creating new memories. On Christmas morning, they opened presents and felt grateful for the simple moments as a family. They built a snowman in the park, finding happiness in the snow. Diego realized that love and togetherness can create magic despite life’s changes. This different Christmas brought something special into their lives that would stay with them forever.

A gentle touch (抚摸) on her hair called her mind back (使她回过神来)
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she knocked at the door, she found the door was locked and her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sat down in front of the house. “Where could my mother be?” she wondered. “Was she still angry with me?” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the scoldings from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.
Paragraph 2:
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother. “Here you come! I’ve been looking for you,” she said, tired and relieved. Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother’s arms. “Mum, I’m so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.” She expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled, patting her back gently.

“Rani! Here you are!” Mama said relievedly. Relief and joy flooded through Rani. She flung her arms around Mama and clung to her. “What are you doing here?” Mama asked. “Everyone’s been looking all over the place for you. Come, let’ s go home.” Rani shook her head. A lone tear slid down her cheek. “What’ s wrong, my child?” Mama asked gently.

The doctor in the pet hospital took the dog into the operating room.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Link was about to strike with all his strength when the dog opened his eyes. He attempted to sit up but he couldn’t even move a step because of his serious injuries. However, after several attempts, he finally succeeded in standing up with a howl of pain, which surprised Link greatly. He stepped back and back, a sense of pity and guilt overwhelming him and the stone in his hands dropped to the ground unconsciously. He took off his overcoat in a hurry and coated the dog with care. His watery eyes welled up with pain but a light of hope. Link at once took the dog and headed to the nearest pet hospital.
The doctor in the pet hospital took the dog into the operating room. After the door was closed, Link walked up and down, waiting outside of the room anxiously. Though the vet told him that they would spare no effort to save the dog, it was really in bad condition. In the bottom of his heart, he hoped the dog could go through the operation. It took a long time before the door reopened. He walked up and asked how it was going. The vet comforted him and told him that the operation went very well, leading him to the next office. Until then did he breathe a sign of relief.

【答案】Suddenly an idea burst into Bibi’s head. After asking permission, Bibi went to the market and bought a small box of cornstarch and a package of food coloring. Then She mixed cornstarch and soap from Grandma, stirring them until they were thick like paint. Everything was in place. She wrote her message, outlining the words with washable black markers on the windows. Using her biggest brush, she filled in the letters with different colors. Then came the fun part. She took extra time drawing the picture.
When she was finished, Bibi went inside to get Grandma. When they came back out, a bunch of kids were gathered there. “Great job!” said one girl. “Perfect,” said another. Bibi’s grandmother looked up at the window to see what it was with pride. AFTER THE GAME, BRING YOUR UNIFORMS HERE! the window said. Bibi had drawn a picture of the team’s uniforms jumping into a big tub with soap bubbles. Grandma clapped her hands and hugged Bibi. “This just might help,” she said. And after the game, it did.
