What a day! I started at my new school this morning and had the best time. I made lots of new friends and really liked my teachers. I was nervous the night before, but I had no reason to be. Everyone was so friendly and polite. They made me feel at ease. It was like I’d been at the school for a hundred years!
The day started very early at 7:00 am. I had my breakfast downstairs with my mom. She could tell that I was very nervous. Mom kept asking me what was wrong. She told me I had nothing to worry about and that everyone was going to love me. If they didn’t love me, Mom said to send them her way for a good talking to. I couldn’t stop laughing.
My mom dropped me off at the school gates about five minutes before the bell. A little blonde girl got dropped off at the same time and started waving at me. She ran over and told me her name was Abigail. She was very nice and we became close straight away. We spent all morning together and began to talk to another girl called Stacey. The three of us sat together in class all day and we even made our way home together! It went so quickly. Our teacher told us that tomorrow we would really start learning and developing new skills.
I found myself getting more and more excited about the upcoming school year. The school’s atmosphere was welcoming, and I felt a sense of belonging that I hadn’t expected. During lunch, I met even more students who were all eager to include me in their conversations and activities.
I cannot wait until tomorrow and feel as though I am really going to enjoy my time at my new school. I only hope that my new friends feel the same way too. It’s amazing how a single day can change your opinion. This is going to be a great year!

I come from a family that loves sports. My father coaches Little League baseball. My mother swims nearly every weekend. My brother is on his high-school basketball team, and I am the best hitter on my middle-school volleyball team. All of us have benefited (受益) from sports. One of the most common ways for kids to take part in sports is to join a team. Joining a sports team should be a school requirement.
Playing sports is good for both the body and mind. Everyone knows that exercise helps people stay fit. For example, swimming helps your heart work better and it also helps build muscle strength In addition, school athletes often have a healthy diet. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables and avoid fatty foods because I must stay in great condition.
Being on a team allows students to enjoy a healthier social life. They often make more friends and can be some of the most popular kids in school. Since joining the basketball team, my brother has made friends with a lot of his teammates and has showed more interest in spending time with them.
Kids who take part in school teams sometimes earn college scholarships (奖学金). My brother’s friend, Justin, played football in high school. His family did not have money to send him to college. However, a college invited him to play on its team. The college is paying for him to go to school. Joining a team turned out to be one of the best decisions he had ever made. Now he studies at a great college and plays on its football team. Not every school athlete gets a college scholarship, but joining a school team makes it possible.
Although some people may not like the idea of forcing students to join a school team, its many benefits such as keeping kids healthy, new friendships, and possible scholarships cannot be denied (否认).
28. What does the author mainly tell us in Paragraph 2?
A. Playing sports has health benefits.
B. Students should spend more time exercising.
C. Swimming is an excellent sport for students.
D. School athletes must try to eat a healthy diet.
29. How did the author’s brother change after joining the team?
A. He had a busier life. B. He got more chances.
C. He worked much harder. D. He became more sociable.
30. What can we infer about Justin?
A. He is a good football player. B. He will be given a scholarship.
C. He is managing a school team. D. He comes from a wealthy family.
31. What is the author’s attitude to making students join school teams?
A. He doubts it. B. He is in support of it.
C. He is worried about it. D. He pays little attention to it.
D
I overheard someone say recently that they never reread any books. They felt that since they already know the ending of a story, there is nothing to be got by reading it again. I have to dissent.
I am reminded of a professor I had in college. He always has us read our homework twice. “The first time, read fast and for fun,” he said. “The second time, look for nuance and subtlety (细微差别和微妙之处).” I have found his suggestion works great for me.
When I have a new book in my hands, I read fast, eager to see how the story starts, in a hurry to get to the end. Then, if I liked the book, I would go back and read it again. Not right away, but a few months later, possibly on a rainy Sunday afternoon, I would grab the book and settle down to discover the small details. I would read more slowly the second time, appreciating the descriptions and looking forward to my favorite sections, enjoying the expectation. Knowing that those favorite passages are coming does not influence anything. I am looking forward to revisiting those treasured places in the book. Knowing they are coming heightens my enjoyment.
Rereading a book gives me a chance to appreciate the small things an author combines into her story. A turn of a character’s head, a thought in the night, a laugh... These are the things that give insights into a book and the characters. I love dissecting (剖析) a story the second time around, looking for these clues that give the story a deeper meaning.
What have I been rereading lately? The Merlin Trilogy by Mary Stewart.
These books rank among my all-time favorite rereads. Set in Britain in roughly the second half of the fifth century CE, they were Mary Stewart’s take on the familiar King Arthur stories. If you are unfamiliar with them, I highly recommend all three books, especially if you love fantasy and historical fiction.
32. What does the underlined word “dissent” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Hesitate. B. Disagree. C. Complain. D. Struggle.
33. According to the author’s professor, what should one do during rereading?
A. Look for clues to homework.
B. Ski p some parts to get to the end faster.
C. Stick to the most interesting sections.
D. Pay attention to the finer details.
34. What does the author enjoy about rereading a book?
A. Discovering something more inside.
B. Drawing valuable lessons from the book.
C. Visiting the places mentioned in the book.
D. Appreciating the writer’s storytelling skills.
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. How to dissect a story when rereading
B. Why I like to reread books
C. What has rereading books taught me?
D. How many times should you read a book?

One morning in 2013, Devi was traveling with her mother when their train stopped at a busy railway junction (枢纽). Without telling her mum, Devi jumped down to fill up her water bottle, while her back was turned, the signal changed and their train started, leaving Devi behind.
With no idea what to do, Devi climbed on board the next train. Scared, she followed a family with small children. At the next stop, they took Devi to the station master, who handed her over to the child protection authorities.
For the next seven years, Devi was moved from place to place. She was just one more child among so many with no sense of who she was or where she belonged.
In 2015, Devi was sent to live in a shelter (避难所) for girls in the heart of Ranchi city. This is where she first met Neepa, a social worker. Neepa and her colleagues are working to turn this shelter into a care centre by finding loving family-based care for all the children currently living there.
With care and patience, Neepa encouraged Devi to tell her all she could remember. “Devi told me their home was by a single track (轨道) with houses of different sizes on both sides. But this was the only real information we had to work with”, Neepa explains.
Neepa and her team checked with the local police and with the school authorities, but no record of Devi or her family could be found. They decided to experience Devi’s journey with her, visiting station after station and asking local people if they knew of a child going missing seven years ago. But it was useless.
Neepa remembers, “Here, there were similarities to the place that Devi had described. We walked to speak with the local people and ask them if they remembered anything about Devi. Did anyone here recognize her picture?”

1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

We did think about making it longer this year and have a seven-week course, as there’re some schools which finish term a week earlier. In fact, two schools have eight-week holidays. But in the end we decided to keep to the same plan as last year.
M: But, as I understand, last year’s course wasn’t a complete success, was it?
W: Well, we were actually very surprised by the number of people interested in the course. We didn’t actually have enough assistants to look after all the children. Besides, there was such a lot of rain that we couldn’t go outside as often as we wanted to.
M: So, what activities can the children look forward to this year?
W: Well, once again there’ll be artists and musicians who will lead creative classes. We also considered providing some more exciting adventure sports. But we decided not to, in the end. Instead we’re introducing some fun programmes. I think it’ll be good fun for the children.

B 18. C 19. A 20. C
W: Pleased to be here today. My name’s Joan, and I’d like to share with you something about my French learning. I still remember when I first started to learn the language I didn’t really have a problem with the pronunciation. I just had a hard time memorizing words. But I made a great effort and soon I was scoring ten out of ten in all of the tests. By the time I got to university, I could do some writing and translations without much difficulty, and I actually enjoyed learning the grammar rules. Then as part of my university course I had to go and live in France for a year. As soon as I arrived, I realized I didn’t know how to order the type of coffee I liked, and trying to find somewhere to live or stay was something difficult to deal with. I called people about information in the paper, but I had to keep putting the phone down because I couldn’t understand a word they were saying — they all spoke so quickly! I could see then that there’s no point in just knowing words if you can’t hold a conversation with a native speaker. The ability to speak freely is what helps you get a job, hold a conversation or just buy the things you need.

B 33. D 34. A 35. B
由文章第一段中“I overheard someone say recently that they never reread any books. They felt that since they already know the ending of a story, there is nothing to be got by reading it again. (最近我无意中听到有人说他们从不重读任何一本书。他们觉得既然已经知道了故事的结局,再读一遍也没有什么意义。)”和第二段中“He always has us read our homework twice. “ The first time, read fast and for fun,” he said. “ The second time, look for nuance and subtlety (细微差别和微妙之处).” I have found his suggestion works great for me. (他总是让我们把作业看两遍。他说:“第一次,为了乐趣而快速阅读。“第二次,寻找细微差别和微妙之处。”我发现他的建议对我很有效。)”可知,一些人认为既然已经知道故事的结局,再读就没有什么收获了,作者对他们的观点持不同意见,所以dissent的意思是“不同意”。A. Hesitate犹豫;B. Disagree不同意;C. Complain抱怨;D. Struggle斗争。故选B。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第二段中“He always has us read our homework twice.“ The first time, read fast and for fun,” he said.“ The second time, look for nuance and subtlety (细微差别和微妙之处).” (他总是让我们把作业看两遍。他说:“第一次,为了乐趣而快速阅读。“第二次,寻找细微差别和微妙之处。”)”可知,作者的教授认为在重读时应该“注意更细致的内容”。故选D。
【34题详解】

These are the things that give insights into a book and the characters. I love dissecting (剖析) a story the second time around, looking for these clues that give the story a deeper meaning. 故选A。
通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“I overheard someone say recently that they never reread any books. They felt that since they already know the ending of a story, there is nothing to be got by reading it again. I have to dissent. (最近我无意中听到有人说他们从不重读任何一本书。他们觉得既然已经知道了故事的结局,再读一遍也没有什么意义。我有异议。)”和第二段中“He always has us read our homework twice. “ The first time, read fast and for fun,” he said. “ The second time, look for nuance and subtlety (细微差别和微妙之处).” I have found his suggestion works great for me. (他总是让我们把作业看两遍。他说:“第一次,为了乐趣而快速阅读。“第二次,寻找细微差别和微妙之处。”我发现他的建议对我很有效。)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者喜欢重读书籍的原因。因此,最适合作为文章标题的是“Why I like to reread books (为什么我喜欢重读书籍)”。故选B。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一个完整的故事。
With care and patience Neepa encouraged Devi to tell her all she could remember.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

An old woman among the local people recognized the girl.

Paragraph 2:
Neepa took Devi to leave for her parents’ house.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
An old woman among the local people recognized the girl. Her eyes widened with surprise as she looked at Devi, and she began to nod slowly. “There was a family nearby, and they had a daughter who disappeared many years ago. They moved away, heartbroken.” Neepa’s heart leaped with hope as she listened to the old woman’s words. “Their neighbors still live at the end of the street. They might know more.” Neepa and Devi immediately went to meet their neighbors, and then, they were fortunate enough to obtain the new address of this family.
Neepa took Devi to leave for her parents’ house. As Devi approached, her heart pounded with a mix of fear and anticipation. The faces of her parents lit up with recognition and disbelief. They ran towards her, tears streaming down their faces, and hugged her tightly. The years of separation seemed to disappear immediately and be replaced by a sense of joy and reunion. Neepa stood by, her eyes filled with tears, knowing that they had found Devi’s home and her family. The journey finally came full circle, bringing Devi back to where she truly belonged.
