The Napping House
It’s a soft gray rainy day and everyone is asleep in the Napping House-but unfortunately, they are all trying to pile into the same bed, with unfortunate but funny results. This book by Audrey Wood (author) and Don Wood (illustrator) will put any kid to sleep-in the best possible way. (For ages 4 to 7)
Good Dog, Carl
Little Madeleine has a pretty great babysitter: a big friendly dog named Carl. Together, they go to the store and to the zoo, to parties and daycare classes. In this book, Alexandra Day lets readers form their own ideas about what’s happening on each page. (For ages 1 to 4)

As I was walking home,a boy seemed to be singing a song in a very low voice, walking in front of me and carrying some of the same high school books I had with me. I caught up to him,and said “Hello”. I could tell he was startled, and dropped one of his books. I picked it up and as I handed it to him,he said “Thank you.” in a strange way, like with a strong accent.
We soon began walking together and talking. It turns out he was in my science class, and I didn’t even know it!
His name was Ahmad, and his family had just moved here this school year. He invited me into his house, and his family treated me like a special guest, which made me feel very welcome. He said hospitality (好客) is very basic to his culture, and strangers were always treated very kindly. His mom brought out some great food, and offered me some tea. Ahmad’s father and two sisters wanted to hear all about me and my family, and my schooling.
Ahmad’s whole family had to leave their lifelong home because war had broken out,and it wasn’t safe there anymore. They left with only what they could carry. His family was happy to feel safe, and they got used to American culture quickly. They seemed pleased that Ahmad had brought a friend home to meet them.
And as my friendship with Ahmad has continued,I now realize that the world is so much bigger than I thought!I also realize that your friends don’t have to be just like you. Differences make the world go round.
24. What does the underlined word “startled” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Excited. B. Moved. C. Surprised. D. Interested.
25. Why was the writer treated like a special guest by Ahmad’s family?
A. They liked strangers who came to their home for help.
B. They wanted to know more information about the writer.
C. Strangers were always treated very kindly in their culture.
D. The writer was an American and knew much about their culture.
26. Where does the writer probably come from?
A. Canada. B. America. C. China. D. Australia.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. People from different countries can be good friends.
B. Friends need different cultures and different accents.
C. Your friends should have a lot of things the same with you.
D. You can’t make friends with people from other countries.
C
“Red tourism”, a new form of tourism in which people visit locations and memorials(纪念碑) with historical significance for the Communist Party of China, has given a much-needed shot in the arm of the domestic(国内的) tourism industry in summer. And red tourism will be more popular during the National Day Golden Week holiday.
Ticket bookings for red tourism sites in June increased by five times with local and short trips to red tourism sites being the choice of about 88 percent of such tourists. And the search for the term “red tourism” on Mafengwo, a Chinese travel service and social-networking platform, increased by 300 percent during the summer holidays.
Red tourism is not only about the joy of visiting a new place and taking in the wonderful sights. It is also about gaining knowledge about history and being inspired by the stories of the people who gave their lives to the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 and worked for the wellbeing of the Chinese people. By rediscovering history and passing on the stories of the Chinese revolution and its heroes to the next generations, people can uplift their spirit.
Red tourism can also be used as an opportunity to develop rural(农村的) areas because most of the revolutionary bases and red tourism sites are in the countryside. It can raise the incomes of local people. Since red tourism creates jobs and helps increase farmers’ incomes, it can promote local development.
Data show that in the first half of 2022, more than 30 percent of all tourists visited red tourism sites in rural areas, which was 10 percent more than the last year. Yet red tourism faces certain developmental problems, mainly because some local government officials have failed to make the best use of red tourism resources for local development.
28. What can we know about red tourism?
A. It has brought life to tourism. B. It is not popular with the young.
C. It is a traditional form of tourism. D. It is about visiting beautiful scenery.
29. Why does the author list the numbers in paragraph 2?
A. To describe a scene. B. To prove his idea.
C. To illustrate the story. D. To introduce a platform.
30. What is the benefit of red tourism for rural areas?
A. It can help improve farming facilities. B. Local people can make more money.
C. It can offer job opportunities to visitors. D. Local people can receive much help from society.
31. What will be mentioned in the following paragraphs?
A. More and more people will choose red tourism.
B. Many travel companies will benefit from red tourism.
C. Some measures should be taken to solve problems.
D. More red tourism sites should be open to the public.

A proper diet and regular exercise seem to be the only methods of losing weight. However, the importance of water should be added in the process. While medical science has proven the positive effects of water, most people still do not drink enough each day.
The reason why water is so important for weight loss has something to do with metabolism(新陈代谢) of fat. The liver(肝脏) is in charge of this process of turning stored fat into energy. However, the liver is also responsible for helping the kidneys(肾脏) which need enough water in order to function properly. When the kidneys lack water, the liver has to perform all the functions of the kidneys on its own. This means the liver doesn’t have enough energy to metabolize fat. So,drinking water allows the kidneys to focus on their job and the liver to focus on its job.
Also, studies have shown that water can make us feel full when drunk before meals. Without even making an effort, most people who drink a glass of water before a meal will eat 33% less. This is partly because of the fact that they simply get full quicker because the water is taking up space. The other reason is that the food will expand as soon as it enters the water-filled stomach.
Water is important for every aspect of the health of the human body. By drinking more water and improving the health of the body, goals of losing weight can be achieved more easily.
32. Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage as a way to lose weight?
A. Regular exercise. B. Drinking water. C. A balanced diet. D. Medical care.
33. When does liver have to take over the job of the kidneys?
A. The kidneys are lacking in water. B. There is something wrong with the kidneys.
C. The liver doesn’t provide energy for the kidneys. D. There is no fat for the liver to metabolize.
34. Why can we lose weight by drinking water before meals?
A. Because we don’t feel thirsty any longer. B. Because we eat much less than normal.
C. Because the water takes up too much space. D. Because the food becomes larger and larger.
35. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
A. The Liver Is Important to the Kidneys B. The Process of Metabolism
C. Water for a Healthy Life and Losing Weight D. Several Tips for Losing Weight
